Outlook: Dallas is ready to run opponents
over this fall. Despite seeing top running
back/linebacker Caleb Naughton graduate in
the spring, the Dragons’ run-oriented offense
seems primed for a big year on the ground
this fall. An offensive line led by Maclean,
Lindsay, Huey and Snyder will be the key to
the Dragons’ ground attack. The line will work
to pave the way for McCarron, Wilcoxon, Mauk
and others in the run game. The Dragons are
likely to get multiple running backs involved
as Dallas hopes to wear down defenses with

its Wing-T offense. The
secret to the increased
strength among linemen
stemmed from players
working in the offseason
to improve. “Our whole
front on both sides is
going to be really good,”
coach Jackson said. “I
don’t have a kid on our
Mauk
defense that can’t power
clean 200 pounds. They’ve all worked really
hard.” Added McCarron: “Guys you wouldn’t
think just by looking at them are power cleaning 200 pounds. It keeps you pushing, and
you put your nose to the
grindstone and keep
going no matter what
obstacles come in front of
you.” While McCarron will
help lead the squad’s running backs, a new face will
be under center, as sophomore Harrison Broadus
takes over at quarterback.
Earhart
Broadus’ progression will
be key in making the offense tick. Seeing a
sophomore start is unusual for the Dragons,
but coach Jackson said that Broadus, along
with Earhart, played their way into the lineup
and earned their roles “I don’t usually like
pulling sophomores up, but these guys have
been lights out and really gave us no choice,”
Jackson said. “I think (Harrison) Broadus is
going to do a great job (at quarterback) and
Tanner is going to do great at corner. These
guys really stepped up.” The Dragons are coming off an eight-win season that saw the team
advance to the quarterfinals of the Class 5A
state playoffs, where they lost to eventual
state-champion West Albany. But players back
from last season aren’t content with their
accomplishments. They want more. The
always-tough Mid-Willamette Conference will
be difficult to navigate, but West Albany,
which also won the league title last season, is
now a Class 6A school. That leaves the race for
the conference crown up for grabs and gives
the Dragons a chance for a league title in
2014. Four of Dallas’ seven league games are
at home, including what should be key
matchups against Silverton, Lebanon and
Corvallis. “We’d have summer workouts and
60 kids would show up,” Jackson said. “Our
guys have earned their success. We hope that
it’s going to be our destiny and that we
achieve good things this year.”

Central looks to senior running back, transfer quarterback to lead the team’s offense
THE RUNDOWN …
Coach: Shane Hedrick (15th season).
2013 record: 4-1, second place in Oregon
West Conference; 9-3 overall; advanced to
quarterfinal round of Class 4A state playoffs.
Key returners: Wes Riddell, sr., running
back/linebacker; Alberto Meza, sr., offensive/defensive lineman; Riley Olson, sr., offensive/defensive lineman; Ty Whittemore, sr.,
offensive/defensive lineman; Kyler Fleming,
sr., running back/linebacker; Michael Alvarez,
sr., tight end/linebacker.
Newcomer to watch: Doug Clem, jr., quar-
terback/safety.
Significant stat: 1,331
— The number of rushing
yards Riddell gained during the 2013 season.
Riddell also tied for the
team-high in touchdowns
with 12.
Outlook: Central enters the season looking to
Clem
make a big splash in its
first year at the Class 5A level. The Panthers
will once again turn to Riddell. Central will
look to dominate on the ground this fall.
Senior running back/linebacker Wes Riddell scored 12 touchdowns in 2013.
Kyle, Cassie, Ruger, Diane & Wally
“The offensive and defensive lines will be the heart
and soul of this team,
along with the hard running of Wes Riddell,”
Hedrick said. Anchoring
the front lines are Meza,
Olson and others. But the
Panthers are looking to
add a new dimension to
Alvarez
their offense with the
team’s lone transfer this season. Following
former Central quarterback Ben Finnegan,
who threw for 2,220 yards and 26 touchdowns last season, is no easy task, but Clem,
a transfer from West Salem High School,
brings speed and size (6foot-2, 205 pounds) as he
steps under center for the
Panthers. Clem led the
Titans’ unbeaten junior
varsity squad in 2012 and
appeared in limited varsity action as a backup last
season. “He has a very
good arm with accurate
passing,” Hedrick said.
Fleming
“He’s the first to arrive and
last to leave.”
The
Panthers will have to
overcome some inexperience after having 16 seniors graduate from last
season’s roster, including
eight receivers and defensive backs. While Central
may look to lean on the
run offensively, the develOlson
opment of the passing
game could turn the Panthers into a MidWillamette Conference contender. “The talent is there,” Riddell said. “We’re a really
young team, so we just need to get some
experience under our belt. There may be a
few rough games in the beginning, but we’ll
put it together from there.” Returning

out. Now facing larger
schools, there could be a
few bumps and bruises
along the way, but
Hedrick said the Panthers
are committed to building
depth. “I think the kids are
Quinn
adapting well,” he said.
“They’ve been very receptive with what
we’re trying to do on the field. I’m pleased
with that. I think like everyone else in the valley, we’re concerned about our depth and
developing the younger players.” Hedrick
said he’s not using wins and losses as a
barometer of success in 2014. Instead, he’s
looking for his returning starters to help a
young Central squad grow and become a
force to be reckoned with by the end of the
season. The Panthers likely will have kinks to
smooth out early in the season, but Hedrick
is confident the team’s potential can make
them competitive in the MWC. “The success
of the team will be measured on them reaching their potential,” Hedrick said. “I look for
them to have weekly improvements.”

Perrydale brings experienced varsity roster to first season in Tri-River Conference
THE RUNDOWN …
Coach: Denise Dickey (first season).
2013 record: 12-4, second place in Casco
League; 13-8 overall; lost to C.S. Lewis
Academy in the Casco League Tournament.
Key returners: Madison Perkins, sr., setter;
Kolbie Calonder, sr., setter; Taylor Price, jr.,
middle blocker; Sarah Nelson, sr., outside hitter; Anna McGill, jr., outside hitter.
Newcomers to watch: None.
Significant stat: 46 — The number of
serving aces Nelson
recorded during the 2013
season, a team-high.
Outlook:
Perrydale
enters a new league with
an experienced roster,
seeing eight players
returning from 2013. The
Pirates may be facing
schools with larger enrollCalonder
ments, but Perrydale
returns nearly all of its starting lineup from
last season. Although entering a new league
with a new coach, one thing is clear: Players
won’t be set in just one position. “I feel each
of these girls are very athletic and well-rounded
players who can fill any
position at any time
should the need arise,”
Dickey said. “The key to
being successful this year
is to use all our offensive
weapons and, as always,
play
great
defense.”
Hallock
Nelson will likely play a
major role on offense for
Perrydale. She was one of
the Pirates’ all-round leaders in 2013, when she led
the team in digs (220),
aces (46), hitting percentage and passing percentage, while also tying for
the team-high in serving
percentage (96 percent).
McGill
The Pirates will also rely
on Telaney Newton and Price at the net, with
Perkins and Calonder as setters. Savannah
Williams will play libero, while Hanna Hallock
rounds out the team’s lineup as a defensive
specialist. The big question surrounds
whether Perrydale’s small
roster will make things
difficult for the Pirates if
injuries or fatigue sets in
as the season goes on.
But Perrydale isn’t ready
to lay down in the TriRiver Conference. Dickey
believes the Pirates have
all the tools necessary to
Nelson
compete for a league
championship right off
the bat. “I just take each
match as they come,” said
Dickey, whose team plays
three of its first four conference matches at home,
starting on Sept. 9
against Santiam. “However, we will be very well
prepared for our new
Price
league, and I am very
excited to see the team in action. I am very
pleased with the progress they are making.
…We don’t have a very big team this year,
but we have some strong girls and I think
we’ll be OK.”

New coach hopes to lead Dallas into contention in the Mid-Willamette Conference
THE RUNDOWN …
Coach: Chris Smerke (first season).
2013 record: 0-7-0, eighth place in MidWillamette Conference; 0-13-1 overall.
Key returners: Tariq Miller, sr., midfield/defense; Lucas Diaz,

Newcomers to watch:

Significant stat: 90 —
The number of goals
Diaz
allowed by the Dragons
during the 2013 season, the most among
Class 5A teams.
Outlook: Dallas is looking to put a difficult
2013 season behind it. The Dragons went
without a win, scoring just seven goals while
allowing 90. But first-year head coach Chris
Smerke is optimistic about this year’s squad.
Miller will be called upon to help anchor the
defense, creating chances for Diaz on the
attack. This will be key to
the offense to the Dragons
improving on offense.
“Tariq’s aggressive style of
play and leadership on the
field will make it hard for
opposing teams to cut him
out of the game,” Smerke
said. “Lucas’ speed and
overall physicality will give
Miller
other teams’ defenses
some problems. He is a dangerous player on
the attack and provides many chances for us
in the final third with his speed and depth.”
Tilgner also will help lead the midfield unit.
The Dragons also welcome an exciting group
of newcomers. Dzirabel, a foreign exchange
student from Germany, brings an international knowledge of the game to the squad while
freshmen Davison, Porter and Huber should
compete for playing time in the midfield. With
new faces on the field, returning players are
adjusting well to Smerke. “He really knows
what he’s doing,” Diaz said. “It’s been very
smooth.” The coaching change has players
looking forward to what the future may hold

Chemistry key to Panthers’ success in MWC
Polk County Itemizer-Observer • September 3, 2014
Fall Sports Preview 7D
Seniors looking to end career on a high with a strong showing in their final season
THE RUNDOWN …
Coach: Joe Orozco (third season).
2013 record: 2-6-0, fourth place in Oregon
West Conference; 3-8-1 overall.
Key returners: Jerikka White, sr., defender;
Grecia Diaz, sr., forward; Alexis Orozco, sr., forward; Victoria Padilla, sr., forward; Alyssa

Newcomers to watch: Naomi Torres, jr.,

Significant stat: 10 — The number of
times opponents held Central scoreless or to
one goal in a match during the 2013 season.
The Panthers scored 17 of their 24 goals in
two matches.
Outlook: At first glance, Central has the
look of a team that will struggle in its first year
at Class 5A. But the Panthers are out to prove
they belong among the Mid-Willamette
Conference’s best. Leading the way will be
Diaz and Orozco, both experienced seniors
capable of giving the Panthers multiple scoring threats. White, one of the team’s co-captains, will anchor the defense. “We have players who have a great understanding of the
game,” Joe Orozco said. “That’s the goal right
now, so we can do better
than we did last year.”
Sisters Naomi and Noah

chances. “Our rotation will
work a lot better because
we have enough defenders to keep our forwards
pushing up,” coach Orozco
said. “That will allow us to
get better looks at the
goal.” With 13 upperclassmen on the roster, including Victoria Padilla and
Ale. Orozco Jasmine Meraz, Central is
not short on experience.
But entering a new league means Joe Orozco
isn’t sure where the Panthers will finish in the
league standings. “It’ll be a great test for all of
us to see how we do against Woodburn,
Silverton and everyone,” Joe Orozco said. “The

last season, knows adjusting to 5A won’t
be without its challenges. But he is primed
for another big season.
“Playing linebacker and running back, I
know how opposing linebackers or running backs think,” Riddell said. “I can see
most of the cuts or holes he’s looking for
and, most of the time, I can read that
before he makes a move.”
And while the Panthers hope for a
smooth transition, Riddell said the
Panthers are ready to learn fast.
“The talent is there,” Riddell said. “We
just have to click as a team. Getting experience under our belt is huge. We may
have a few rough games early, but we’ll
put it together from experience.”

POLK COUNTY — Ohio State vs.
Michigan. Alabama vs. Auburn. Oregon
vs. Oregon State.
In the world of sports, rivalries can turn
just another game on the schedule into
something else entirely.
Dallas and Central have faced each
other before. Despite the schools’ close
proximity, something was missing.
“It didn’t feel like a rivalry,” Central senior Wes Riddell said. “The game didn’t
really mean anything beyond final wins
and losses.”
When the two schools take the football
field on Sept. 26, things will be different.
Central is no longer part of Class 4A’s
Oregon West Conference, having been
assigned
to
5A’s
Mid-Willamette
Conference after last year’s OSAA redistricting and reclassification changes.
And two running backs/linebackers are
hoping to lead their team to a big win in a
game that has a whole new meaning.
Dallas
Dallas senior Spencer McCarron loves
the start of football season. He loves
bonding with his teammates. The thrill of
victory. But sometimes, McCarron loves
the simple things football provides.
“I’m just ready to hit somebody,”
McCarron said. “It’s the
best feeling ever.”
Dallas is coming off
an eight-win season in
2013. McCarron played
a major role on defense,
recording a team-high
90 tackles. On offense,
the

300 yards, but with former running back Caleb Naughton graduating, McCarron will be front and center
in the run game in 2014.
“We think (Spencer) is as good a player
as we’re going to have,” Dallas coach Tracy
Jackson said. “He’s a top-notch player. …
He’s everything we want him to be. He
leads by example. He’s a great teammate
in that he knows how to act and treats his
teammates with respect. That’s what a

true leader does. He takes care of everyone.”
Entering his final season, McCarron is
being asked to do even more.
“I’ve had to become a vocal leader,”
McCarron said. “In previous years, I’ve
always kind of kept my mouth shut and
led by example. This year, they’re expecting me to be vocal and someone that people look up to. I’ve tried to take that role
on. It’s been a fun experience trying to
become a leader that they are inspired by.”
In the offseason, McCarron helped lead
summer workouts, training to get lower
when running and tackling.
“Being low, you stay hidden from other
players,” McCarron said. “You don’t really
see 6-foot-3 tailbacks very often, and the
lower man wins every time.”
The work put in during the summer is
aimed at helping Dallas not only prove
last year wasn’t a one-year wonder, but by
ending his high school career on a high
note.
“You realize it’s your last year and you
only have so much time left,” McCarron
said. “You have to hold on to it for as long
as you can and have no regrets.”
Riddell knows a thing or two about running.
The senior led the Panthers with more
than 1,300 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 2013.
On defense, he had a
team-best 99 tackles.
Unfortunately
for
opponents, Riddell isn’t
resting on his past success.
“I worked on my
speed,” he said. “I’ve
been pretty fast usually,
Riddell
but I know to take it to
the next level, you have to hit the 4.4 (second) 40 (yard dashes), so I’ve been putting
in work to improve my speed and agility.”
Riddell will once again be a major player for the Panthers on both sides of the
ball. With a new quarterback under center
and relative youth across the board,
Riddell’s role as a team leader will be
amplified.
“He’s a very good player,” Panthers
coach Shane Hedrick said. “He’s devel-
This fall won’t be the first time Central
and Dallas have faced off on the gridiron.
It will be the first time the two teams
play as Mid-Willamette Conference foes.
While that distinction may not seem big
to outsiders, for the players it changes
everything.
“(Central) being in the same league just
adds to the fun of the game,” McCarron
said. “Because we’re rivals, getting a victory over them is always big. If we beat
Central and Silverton and they were the
only two teams we beat, I would be semicontent. Those are the teams I don’t want
to lose to.”
But it’s not just the players who are
excited.
“It’s more fun for everybody,” Jackson
said. “If you don’t have a rivalry, you miss
some of the coolness about the game.”
Both teams are expecting strong fan
turnout. But for the players, the game
means more than tallying a victory for
their final win-loss total. It’s a chance for
county bragging rights and pride.
“When I heard we were moving up to
5A, I was real excited,” Riddell said. “Since
our game means something now, it gives a
whole new feeling toward the players.
“The rivalry is back.”

ABBY McBETH
Central
Cross-country
The sophomore runner is
ready to build on an
impressive freshman campaign. McBeth emerged as
the Panthers’ top runner
last fall, setting a personal
record of 18 minutes, 53
seconds and ending her
season with an 11th place
finish in the OSAA 4A State
Championship meet. “Abby
has continued to dedicate
herself to running year
around,” Panthers coach Eli
Cirino said. “I am cautious
McBeth
with my expectations for
her because of the tremendous growth that she has made in
the last two years. It is unrealistic to expect her to continue to
progress the way she has been. She dreams big but is also very
knowledgeable. Having broken almost all of the Central High
distance records as a freshman, it may not be fair to place too
many expectations on her. But based on her mileage and her
competitive nature, I would be surprised if too many girls
around the state can run away from Abby.”
TRISTAN YEAGER

The
senior
running
back/linebacker will be the
heart and soul of the
Mountaineers’ offense this
fall. With freshman Jesse
Sickles starting at quarterback, expect a heavy dose
of Yeager on the ground.
Statistics were not available, but Yeager returned at
least four kickoffs for scores
and led Falls City in touchdowns for the season.
“Tristan is a good, quality

SYDNEY VAN STEENBERGE
Western Menn./Perrydale Girls Soccer
The 2013 Special District 3 Player of the Year returns for her
final high school season in 2014. Van Steenberge helped lead
the co-op squad to a 13-1 league record in Special District 3
and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs.
Van Steenberge played a central role in the team’s offense,
leading the team in goals and assists with 21 and 17, respectively, while helping Western Mennonite/Perrydale score 96
goals, the most in Class 3A-2A-1A by 31 goals. She returns for
her senior campaign with a chance to win Player of the Year
honors for a fourth-straight season while helping Western
Mennonite/Perrydale advance to the state playoffs once again.
The senior midfielder/forward is expected to give the Panthers
a jolt on offense in 2014. Garibay, who played primarily at goalkeeper as a junior for
Central, will be freed up to
roam the field. The
Panthers scored 46 goals in
2013, third most in the
Oregon West Conference,
but 15 of those goals came
in one match. Garibay’s
move from the goal gives
Central a consistent scoring threat and someone
who can spread the field
for his teammates. “We
have a goalie who is ready
to step in this year,” Central
coach Mike Lynch said.
“Moving Marcos into the
field gives us a chance to
create many more scoring
opportunities.” Garibay also
provides depth at goalGaribay

upon to return to the position during the season. Garibay’s
ability to play any position on the field makes him an invaluable asset for the Panthers.
Amanda Dankenbring (left) will play setter for the
Dragons during the 2014 volleyball season.
AMANDA DANKENBRING
Dallas Volleyball
Dankenbring will play setter during her senior year. Coach
Shana Lavier said Dankenbring is the “general” on the court —
and with good reason. In 2013, Dankenbring had 320 assists,
92 digs and 23 aces. “Amanda is part of a great group of seniors,” Lavier said. “She’s a positive role model for the younger
girls to look up to on and off the court, and is one of our team
leaders.” Dankenbring will look to continue her strong play on
the court as the Dragons hope to qualify for the postseason for
the second season in a row.

2014 CENTRAL VOLLEYBALL
Fall Sports Preview 15D
Central brings mix of youth, experience to first season in Mid-Willamette Conference
THE RUNDOWN …
Coach: Michelle Lewis (first year).
2013 record: 4-6, fifth place in Oregon
West Conference; 6-11 overall.
Key returners: Julia Kenyon, sr., middle
blocker; Ryanne Huffman,
sr., libero; Paris Orin, sr.,
outside hitter/defensive
specialist; Kylie Nash, jr.,
setter.
Newcomers to watch:
Alex Dowdell, soph., outside hitter/middle blocker;
Zoe Farnworth, soph.,
right-side hitter/middle
blocker; Patricia Torrez,
Nash
soph., right-side hitter/defensive specialist; Krista Omlid, fr., middle
blocker/right-side hitter.
Significant stat: 16 — That is how many
years it has been since Central volleyball has
had a new coach leading the program. Lewis,
a former assistant coach, takes over for longtime Panther head coach Claudine
Mendazona, who stepped down from the
post earlier this year.
Outlook: Lewis is leading Central to a new
league, moving up to the
Class 5A Mid-Willamette
Conference from the 4A
Oregon West Conference.
The Panthers are expecting a fast start in their new
home despite coming off
a disappointing 2013
campaign that resulted in
a sub-.500 conference
Orin
record. Seven athletes
who saw time on varsity
are back this season,
including Kenyon and
Nash. “They are the veterans on the team and have
played on the varsity
squad since their freshman year,” Lewis said. But
the Panthers also have a
strong crop of varsity
Huffman
newcomers,
including
Farnworth, Dowdell, Torres and Omlid, many
of whom will see significant game action,
giving the Panthers both depth and the ability to throw different looks at opponents
throughout the match. “The sophomores
and Krista (Omlid) really
came out strong this year,”
Lewis said. “They worked
hard and earned their
spots on the varsity roster.
It’s very possible to have a
few of them in the starting lineup.” That combination of youth and experience will make Central a
Torrez
dangerous team during
the 2014 campaign, Lewis said. And
although they’re entering a new league, the
goal remains the same: Compete for a conference title and make a deep run in the state
playoffs, something the Panthers did numerous times in recent years in the Oregon West
Conference. With 2013 conference champion
West Albany now a 6A school, that should
make this year’s Mid-Willamette Conference

determination and experience on our side,”
Henrickson said. “This season will be exciting.”
The biggest challenges facing Dallas may be
adjusting to their first full season under
Henrickson and her coaching staff. The transition, to this point, has been going smoothly.
“Our strength going into the season is that the
players on varsity have, for the most part,
played an entire season together already,”
Henrickson said. “These young ladies are seasoned with experience from the high school
level to the club level. Some of our challenges
will be working with a new coaching staff, different philosophies and becoming the 2014
varsity girls soccer team.” Despite an underwhelming record in 2013, Henrickson said the
Dragons have what it takes to compete for a
league title. Whether that happens depends

itself playing well into the postseason. “The
Lady Dragons were able to make it to the

Player of the Year, and Locke, a first team all-leaguer, will be a strong one-two offensive punch.
“I’m looking for them to keep improving every

the senior leaders that they need to be.” As the

Woodward is thrilled to have the raw talent to
