Avoid wind load on the open wing. Close and lock wings in case of wind or draught. Risk of injury and property damage due to uncontrolled closing and opening of the wing. Ensure that the wing is moved slowly by hand along the whole movement range until final open and closed position. General remarks on product liability and warnings Opened and tilted wings do not meet any requirements regarding tightness of joints, driving rain tightness, sound insulation, heat insulation and anti-burglary protection. Closed windows do not achieve the minimum air exchange rates required for health and heating. If the windows are used for ventilation of the rooms, then proper ventilation should be granted by applying appropriate ventilation measures. Please note the airtightness threshold values (permeability of joints) stated within scope of CE marking of our windows/ doors. We expressly point out that our windows/doors are designed for use in residential and non-residential buildings. However, it should be ensured that the indoor conditions (temperature and relative humidity) are within the limit values of ÖNORM B-8110-2. Use in deviating installation climates (e.g. indoor swimming pools, saunas, cold storages etc.) and/or special requirements e.g. regarding increased salt and acid concentrations in the ambient air (close to the sea, dairy factories, stables, chemical factories etc.) should be subject to our express written approval. � Float glass does not meet any requirements regarding increased risk of breakage, anti-burglary protection and fire protection (please note the local building codes, guidelines, standards and regulations). Float glass may easily break. There is a risk of injury due to the corresponding sharp-edged break lines and glass fragments. � ���� Improperly locked front doors (e.g. locking only with door handle) do not meet the anti-burglary requirements. � ���� ���� � ���� � � ���� � ���� ���� � ���� � � ���� ���� � � � Loosely delivered panes should be stored at a dry location. Moisture will destroy the edge bond. Proper position and wear conditions of safety-relevant fitting parts should be regularly checked. Fastening screws should be retightened and/or parts should be replaced as required. All window and door elements whose intended use includes opening, closing and locking should be operated at least once per month in order to avoid “resting wear” (in particular corrosion and stiffness). During the construction stage, the windows and doors are subject to various mechanical, climatic and chemical loads. Correspondingly protect the components by covering/taping and ensure sufficient ventilation for removal of excessive moisture (also during the construction stage, the climatic limit values as per ÖNORM B 8110-2 must not be exceeded!). Protect wood-aluminium elements against moisture, rain and snow during storage and construction. When covering the elements, ensure that any possible sun irradiation does not result in partial darkening of the wooden surface; for such purpose, the foam rubber transport blocks should also be removed immediately after delivery. There are openings for vapour pressure equalisation between the wood and aluminium profiles. Protect such joints against moisture until final connection. Use suitable adhesive tapes for protection of the surface. The adhesive tapes should be UV-resistant as well as compatible with wood and aluminium surfaces. The tapes should be removed as soon as possible. Moisture, mortar, concrete and plaster materials may trigger chemical reaction above all with wood types rich in resin (e.g. larch) and rich in tannic acid (e.g. oak). These reactions may result in permanent colour changes of the surface. Protect your wooden surface by taping with suitable materials during the construction stage. If – despite utmost care – there are impurities on the components, then such impurities should be completely removed immediately after occurrence by using non-aggressive agents. Alkaline washouts from facade and stonework may result in irreparable damage with powder-coated and anodised aluminium surfaces. To avoid this, windows and doors should be correspondingly protected (covered) and/or cleaned and conserved early. 5 ���� TIPS FOR VISIONARIES ���� � ���� � � ���� ���� � ���� � � ���� � ���� � � Check the belts of the roller shutters for signs of wear in order to avoid the risk of falling down of the roller shutter casing. In case of wind speeds above 60 kph, roller shutters and external blinds should be moved back into the protective casing or blind in order to prevent any damage. 2. UNLOADING, ON-SITE TRANSPORTATION GAULHOFER and its partners are not responsible for transportation from the truck or container to the storage location. If possible, transport the components in the position in which they will be installed later. In case of incautious and/or improper handling of the window and/or door elements, function-related sharp edges may result in injuries, particularly if persons are fully or partially located below the open wing. Please ensure with covered fittings that the turn limiter is locked in the bolt of the corner bearing. If the doors provide of rotary hinges that are laterally bolted to the wing overlap, the wing should be protected against embrasure shocks by using a stopper provided by the customer; otherwise, the enormous loads applied on the rotary hinges may result in damage. Safety-related components such as turn limiters and cleaning stay-arms must only be unlocked by specialists for purposes of wing adjustment and/or wing unhinging. Electric components such as electric door openers, electric rooflight openers, roller shutter and external blind motors as well as the corresponding control elements must only be commissioned by authorised specialists (electricians). Increased thermal load and heat build-up at the pane may result in sudden glass breakage. Avoid partial shading of the glasses, e.g. caused by partial covering with outdoor sun protection installations. Heat build-up at the glass pane may result from external sources of heat (radiators, lighting) and sun irradiation, which is even increased by dark objects in immediate vicinity to the glass. Avoid subsequent attachment of films and paints to the glass. 3. STORAGE UNTIL INSTALLATION The windows should be stored in dry, well-ventilated rooms. In order to keep the components dust-free, windows may be covered with cardboard or protective foil. Wood and wood-aluminium windows may not be leaned directly against each other, as this may damage the finish. The components should therefore either be leaned against the wall individually or separated using wooden slats. (Fig. 1). Vinyl windows may be stored leaning against each other since they are foilwrapped; however, it is better to store the windows separated by a liner such as cardboard, polystyrene, etc. Regarding assessment of glass defects, ÖNORM B 3738 (in the respectively applicable version) should be deemed to be agreed. Please note that we do not perform any plausibility check of your order regarding compliance with the respectively applicable building codes, OIB guidelines, standards and any other applicable regulations. The ordering party correspondingly acts on its own responsibility. Note: There are drying agents available for floors that permit ventilation sooner and therefore allow moisture to be released more quickly. Examine roller shutter hinges regularly for indications of wear and tear in order to prevent the roller shutter from falling. fig. 1 6 7 TIPS FOR VISIONARIES 4. OPERATION 4.2 Sliding elements Scissor hinge – scissor arm 4.1 Windows and casement doors Almost all GAULHOFER windows, with the exception of fixed windows and a few customized windows, have a sash with tilt and turn hardware. The window handle on the sash has different functions according to its position (see fig. 2). Incorrect operation: GAULHOFER windows with a window frame measuring 1,180 mm or more have a sash lifter that also functions as a lock to prevent incorrect operation. The safety lock ensures that the sash is not opened and tilted at the same time. Should the handle be blocked due to a handling error, please keep pressing the sash lifter (see fig. 3), turn the handle to position 2, into the turn position, and then, at the same time, press the sash at the hinge area towards the window frame. Now you can release the sash lifter and correct function is restored. fig. 3 8 fig. 4 4.2.1 Tilt and slide patio units In order to move the sash into the tilt or the slide position, the handle must be turned to the horizontal position. From this position, the sash can be tilted, but cannot slide since the sash is still engaged. In order to slide ���� (open) the sash, the handle must be turned down to kick out the bottom. The sash is now free to slide and moves parallel to the window frame. In case of an even number of sashes, the second-sash-locking mechanism located in the rabett can be unlocked by pulling the handle up. � fig. 11 4.3 Front doors / secondary doors Folding sash ���� fig. 8 fig. 10 Caution: Before you open and/or move the sash, all window handles must be in the turn position (handle position 2, see 4.1) and/or turned up 180º before sliding them together. 4.3.1 Front doors Operated with a door handle, a turn-knob or a fixed handle. By pushing the door handle, the latch unlocks, allowing the door to be opened (see Fig. 12). In case of a turn-knob or a fixed handle, the latch is unlocked by turning the key in the opposite direction to the locking direction until it reaches the end stop. Locking: Turning the key one full rotation in the locking direction engages the safety catch. Another full rotation engages all locking mechanisms (bolts and/ or hooks.) Front doors by GAULHOFER always come equipped with multiple locking mechanisms. For wood and wood-aluminium components, the middle folding sashes are equipped with a special handle (in the unlocked position, the handle points upwards.) The two outer sashes are equipped with standard window handles. 4.2.3 Lift and slide units To open the sliding sash, press the handle down 180º, causing the sash to lift up so it can be moved (opened.) The sash can be fixed (not locked) into any position by returning the handle to the starting position (Fig. 10). Additionally, it is possible to lock the sliding sash in the energy-saving trickle ventilation position (see Fig. 10 and 11). To lock the door, the door handle has to be pulled up (45º) before the key or thumb turn can be turned to lock the door (see Fig. 13). To raise the roller shutter, the belt must be pulled down; the belt retracts automatically (see fig. 16). Using the crank The shutter is raised or lowered by turning the folding crank. The light incidence of the Venetian blinds is regulated by the position of the slats (see fig. 17). Electric motor The roller shutter is lowered or raised by activating the switch or the handheld remote control (see Fig. 18). For the Venetian blinds, it also controls the position of the slats and therefore the light incidence . fig. 17 In state of delivery, a receiver does not “know” any transmitter and should correspondingly learn the transmitters to which it should react. We call this the “teaching” process. Symbols: Power-up: For teaching it is necessary to de-energise a receiver or a group of receivers and to energise it/them again after approx 5 seconds; this can be done at the upstream safety cut-out or at the corresponding plug-in connector (power-up process). Always perform a power-up process when the symbol of the safety cutout is displayed. Now, the receiver is in teaching mode for approx. one minute. Press the teaching button at the transmitter within such period in time; otherwise, the teaching mode will be exited. Always press the teaching button of your transmitter if the symbol of the teaching button is displayed. Waving: After operation of the teaching button at the transmitter, the connected sun protection will perform several movements. In these instructions, the following symbol is used for waving. Single waving: Press the teaching button at the transmitter, wait until the connected sun protection is moving, and immediately release the button. Teaching of main channel You may either teach a 1-channel transmitter or one channel of an 8-channel transmitter to a receiver. The display shows “Eu” (Enrol user) 5.3.4 Teaching of a finger into the system A maximum of 99 fingers can be taught. First, enter the security code as per section 5.3.3. 5.3.4.1 Allocation of authorisation If the display shows “Eu”, press the OK button. Selection of user: The display shows “1”. If this user number is already in use, then this will be indicated by a blinking point next to the number. Example: “1.” Set the desired user number by pressing the < and > buttons. Press the OK button. Selection of finger: The display shows “F1” for finger 1. Please start counting with the little finger on the left hand. The right little finger has the number 10 (= setting “F0” in the display). If a finger number is already in use, this will be indicated by a point next to the number. Set e.g. “F7” for the right index finger. Press the OK button. Now you can set the relay that is to be addressed by the previously selected finger. Selection of relay: the display shows “o1”, stating that the first relay (motor lock) is selected (standard setting). “o1”... relay 1 “o2”... relay 2 “o3”... relay 3 “od”... double relay function: Relay 1 and relay 2 are switched simultaneously with a pull of the finger. Reaction of both relays is based on the respectively set relay switching time. Use the < and > buttons to set the relay to be controlled, and press the OK button. Possibilities: “o1”, “o2”, “o3” or “od”. The system available to you determines the available settings. Example: this selection is not possible with an ekey home control unit as there is only one relay available; this relay will be allocated. With an ekey home 3 control unit, “o1”, “o2”, “o3” or “od” can be selected. In this case, also “EF” will be displayed. 5.3.4.2 Recording of finger After displaying of “EF” you will be granted 60 seconds to slide your finger along the sensor, starting with the anterior joint. The finger scan has a status LED that shows the status by means of three colours: Red: The finger could not be successfully scanned; please repeat sliding of finger! Orange: Enrolment operation mode. The device is waiting for the finger to be stored. Green: Successful scanning. Note: 1. Master finger must not be taught as user finger! 2. After each recording of finger (sliding the finger along the sensor), wait for approx. 3 sec. until this is signalised by the corresponding LED; then, another finger can be slid along the sensor. 3. Sliding the finger along the sensor – tips: Perform a uniform sliding movement and only with low pressure. Ensure that the greatest possible part of the finger lines is slid along the sensor (see figure on the right). 34 4. Which finger should be used? Fingertips with scars/injuries are not suitable for use as user finger – please select an alternative finger. In case of slim fingers, use of the thumb is recommended. At least two fingers should be taught per person (each finger 3 times). In case of injury of or a bandage to a finger, please use the “second finger”. Altogether, 150 fingers can be taught. In case of a low number of persons it would be appropriate to start with a high number of fingers per person; this is because users will identify their preferred finger for identification only after a certain time period. ALUMINIUM FRONT DOORS 1. Teach master finger (3 x master finger: three times the same or three different fingers). Prerequisites: Device is initialised (red + green + blue LEDs are continuously on). Slide the first master finger along the sensor; the blue LED flashes; wait for approx. 3 sec.; red + green LED will go out for a short period and then will be continuously on. Slide the second master finger along the sensor; the blue LED flashes; wait for approx. 3 sec.; red + green LED will go out for a short period and then will be continuously on. Slide the third master finger along the sensor; the blue LED flashes; wait for approx. 3 sec.; green LED will be on for a short period. After all 3 master fingers are taught, the device will be in operation mode (only the blue LED is on). Now, user fingers can be taught. If a finger has been slid along the sensor and has not been accepted as master finger during the teaching process, then the red + green LED will continue to be on; repeat master finger teaching process. Timeout: 60 sec. Do not allow passing more than 60 seconds between the individual master finger teaching processes; otherwise, teaching should be repeated. 2. Teaching of user finger (master fingers must not be taught as user fingers!) Prerequisites: Device is in operation mode (only the blue LED is on). Slide a master finger along the sensor; red and green LED will be on for a short period. Slide one or several user fingers along the sensor; if teaching has been successful, the green LED will light up; completion of the teaching process is made by again scanning a master finger. Red and green LED will be on for a short period. If the quality is insufficient, the red LED will be on. Repeat user finger teaching process. It is recommended to teach individual user fingers three times in order to optimise the recognition rate. In case of “difficult” fingers it could be necessary to teach the same user finger up to 6 times, or to use another finger as user finger. Timeout: 10 sec. Do not allow passing more than 10 seconds between the individual user finger teaching processes; otherwise, teaching has to be repeated 3. Identification Prerequisites: Device is in operation mode; only the blue LED is on. Slide the user finger along the sensor. If the finger has been recognised, the green LED will light up and the relay will be switched. In case of no recognition of the finger, the red LED will light up. 4. Delete all fingers (incl. master finger). Press “Delete” button of the internal unit (Control Unit 4000) for several seconds until the “Delete” LED lights up. After some seconds, the LED will go out; this indicates the end of the deletion process. The green LED of the outer unit will shortly light up during the deletion process. The initial status is restored; the red + green + blue LEDs of the outer unit are continuously on. Note: Another possibility to delete all fingers is to use outer unit (fingerprint reader). For this, the master finger should be slid along the sensor 3 times in a row. After twofold scanning of the master finger, the blinking red LED indicates that the deletion mode has been initialised. The deletion process will be started after third sliding of the master finger. This is indicated by the green LED. Then, the device is reset to delivery status. correct wrong 35 TIPS FOR VISIONARIES Adjustment of locking components and striker plate • Depending on the hardware, your front door has locking components that can be adjusted by adjusting the contact pressure using Allan key SW 4 for eccentric screws. The contact pressure can also be adjusted on the striker plate. To do so, loosen the fastening screws and increase or decrease the contact pressure by moving the stiker accordingly. Afterwards re-tighten the fastening screws. Minimum 40 mm Adjustment process adjust 6.1 General Besides weather conditions, the components are also affected by smoke, industrial emissions, dust, etc. The soiling or, as the case may be, the deposits in conjunction with rain and condensation can have an adverse effect on the surfaces and thus their appearance. 5.4 Shutters loosen/undo 6. CLEANING, CARE & MAINTENANCE Depth adjustment scale Wood is a living material that requires an intact finish. Clean frames and sashes regularly. Soap and water or a mild dishwashing liquid are most suitable. Wipe clean with clear water. Use soft cleaning cloths and sponges. Abrasive cleaner, household cleaners and glass cleaners with ingredients such as alcohol or ammonia are unsuitable. The GAULHOFER Window Care Set is most suitable for the care of the finish. It contains a special care liquid for the finish of your GAULHOFER windows. Adjustment edge of collar distance Collar adjustment with SW 4 Adjustment edge Minimum 15 mm Cleaning and care The finished wood surfaces of GAULHOFER windows are coated with an application of an environmentally friendly, water-soluble thick layer of acrylic varnish applied by spray gun. Please treat the components with great care to prevent damaging the finished wood surfaces. Maintenance and repair of damages The finish may be damaged due to outside influences (during construction, due to hail, etc.) In any case, more extensive damage should be repaired by a specialist – please contact your GAULHOFER dealer and/or your service partner. Small defects such as scratches, hairline cracks or damage in the early stages can be repaired using a fine paintbrush and water-soluble acrylic varnish. fig. 69 To maintain the finish, the GAULHOFER Window Care Set for wood also contains a paintbrush, fine sand paper and a can of varnish matching the color of your windows for repair work. Side adjustment It is important to repair damaged areas immediately. Otherwise water may penetrate, freeze in winter and thus cause the finish to peel. The reason: each wood window is exposed to different conditions. Maintenance depends mostly on the installation, the location of the building and the weather conditions (sun, rain, snow, hail, wind). Special stress results if the building structure has no eaves, is located in alpine surroundings, on a busy street or close to polluting industrial plants. Therefore, the golden rule for a long window-life is: Check your window every time you clean it, at least twice a year, for damage, weathering (cracks, dents, blisters), as well as after every hailstorm. Repair any damage or wear of the finish immediately. Sand the damaged areas with sand paper of 180 grit and then apply a coat of varnish or a covering finish. Should you reach bare wood when sanding, apply a base layer of water-soluble acrylic varnish. After the varnish has dried and/or the window has been re-primed, sand the damaged spot one more time, this time with sanding paper, grit of 180 to 220. The varnish should be applied up to three times onto the damaged area. Drying time varies from 2-4 hours depending on temperature. Please do not apply at temperatures below 10º C or in extreme heat. Recoating of wood windows Should the maintenance described above not be carried out in time, it may be necessary to recoat the entire window after a few years. If this is the case, obtain the services of a professional painter in your area! In order to provide you with relevant information and to assist you when requesting an estimate from the painter, we have listed the sequence of work required: • Strip or sand off all old finishes. • Lightly sand the wood surface lengthwise with sandpaper, 180 grit, using a sanding block. (Do not use steel wool!). • Remove dust • Apply colorless GAULHOFER window impregnation • Apply colored GAULHOFER window primer The first step before assembly is the application of the primer. It already contains a light pigmentation, which will provide your window with its initial, additional UV-protection. After primer, a finishing coat is required. It is best to let a professional painter do the work! How to prime and varnish Sand lengthwise along the wood surface using sand paper. Then remove the dust. The sanding paper should have a grit of 220 and be mounted on a cork or rubber sanding block. Please do not use steel wool. Apply priming color that corresponds to the tint of the varnish of the finishing coat. Apply the GAULHOFER varnish evenly (varnish or opaque varnish) on all sides using a polyester paintbrush. Three coats should provide you with the required total layer thickness of 60 µm for varnish and with 80 µm for opaque finishes. Please do not paint the glass, the silicone glass seal, the joint seals, the weather striping or the hardware. We recommend you use masking tape. Remove the weather stripping and remount it carefully after painting has been completed. Remove the masking tape from the surface immediately upon completion. Calculation of varnish quantity required (varnish): 1 liter (1 quart) is sufficient for an area of approximately 4 m2 (13’ sq) which equals approximately 7 lineal meters (22’) window circumference for the required three coats. The original GAULHOFER primer color and varnish for the finishing coat can be purchased from your GAULHOFER specialist. All our coating materials are water-soluble and do not contain any environmentally harmful solvents. We recommend that you choose a medium color tone for your transparent varnish from the extensive GAULHOFER palette, such as Oak or Teak for spruce windows and Larch medium for larch windows. The reason for our recommendation: Colorless and light finishes do not provide sufficient UV protection for outside use due to their low pigment content. The finish deteriorates more quickly; therefore you have to repaint more often. On the other hand, with the very dark finishes, you risk the wood heating up too much, which causes cracks to form where moisture can enter. • Sand between coats and remove dust • Determination of quantity required for impregnation or, as the case may be, for primer: • 1 liter (1 quart) is sufficient for an area of approximately 8–10 m2 (80’–100’ sq) which equals a window circumference of approximately 20 lineal meters (65’) Alternate surface “GAULHOFER Larch Oil” Wood-aluminium and wood units are impregnated and primed at the factory, and have a water-soluble oil (natural pine oil) applied in the factory as finish. • Apply primer evenly using a polyester paintbrush. Caution: Do not paint over hardware or seals Cleaning, care and maintenance of wood-aluminium components (Interior) Clean the inside of windows and doors with warm water occasionally. Apply Gaulfhofer Wood Care Liquid once a year on interior wood surfaces. • Paint only at temperatures between 10º and 20º C (average room temp.). Drying time is up to 12 hours depending on the temperature In order to prolong the durability of stained wood surfaces, you should regularly inspect the finish of the windows during cleaning or care. See “Non-finished wood surfaces” below for additional steps Non-finished wood surfaces GAULHOFER wood surfaces are impregnated and primed in the factory. The colorless, environmentally friendly impregnation with penetrating action applied in a factory spray finish protects the window against absorption of moisture and fungal infestations that cause discoloration (blue stain) and destroy the wood (decay). 38 39 TIPS FOR VISIONARIES If it is necessary to repaint due to damage on the interior, it depends on the degree of damage whether it is necessary to • lightly sand and repaint with GAULHOFER Larch Oil or • sand off the factory finish down to the bare wood and then apply a double coat of GAULHOFER Larch Oil to rebuild the surface (When applying GAULHOFER Larch Oil with a paintbrush, it might help to dilute the original product with 5-10% water) Cleaning, care and maintenance of wood components (exterior) The periodic coating of wood windows and doors with the Larch Oil is not always advisable or necessary . Colorless and almost colorless finishes offer less protection from ultra-violet rays. Furthermore, GAULHOFER Larch Oil is fungicide-free for environmental reasons (no protective film). This reduces durability and requires more care compared to varnished windows. To help prevent graying and infestation of wood-discoloring fungi on the wood surface, stained window units exposed to outside weather conditions require regular care. For outside-care we recommend GAULHOFER Wood Care Liquid and/or our GAULHOFER Larch oil (colorless), according to the condition of the surface. Repeated care of the window units is recommended 1–2 x annually depending on weathering and exposure. Wood Care Liquid, as well as Larch Oil, are applied using an absorbent cloth and wiped outwards towards the frame. Repeat the process after the application has dried (allow approximately 1 hour for Wood Care Liquid, overnight for Larch Oil). 6.3 Vinyl surfaces Cleaning and care Clean frames and sashes regularly. Soap and water or a mild hand dishwashing liquid are most suitable. Wipe clean with clear water. Use soft cleaning cloths and sponges. Abrasive cleaner, household cleaners and glass cleaners with aggressive ingredients such as alcohol or ammonia are unsuitable. The GAULHOFER Care Set for Vinyl Windows is ideally suited to care for vinyl surfaces. It contains a special deep cleansing agent, as well as a preservative to care for white or foliated surfaces. Maintenance and repair of damage In case the white vinyl surface has been manually damaged, please contact your GAULHOFER specialist. In this case, the damage must be repaired using aggressive chemical materials. Only a specialist (GAULHOFER Service) is able to carry out these repairs. A repair tool is used to correct minor manual damage of the foil; which can also be purchased from GAULHOFER. In case the window units were not cared for properly and individual styles or rails exhibit graying or have been attacked by wood-discoloring fungi, the respective style and rail must be sanded down to the bare wood and then ���� painted at least twice with GAULHOFER Larch Oil. Excess material must be wiped off with a cloth after approximately 15 minutes. Interim drying time before the second coat is applied – overnight. To care for intact surfaces of the window units, just apply GAULHOFER Larch Oil with a cloth. � 6.4 Aluminium surfaces Caution: Cloths soaked with larch oil may self-ignite. Store soaked cloths in a closed metal container or under water. 6.4.1 Powder-coated aluminium Aluminium surfaces may grow dull with pollution and loose their shine and colour. Alternate surface “GAULHOFER Hard Stain” Hard stain is a water-based, decorative coating with film-building properties on coniferous wood. Recommendations for cleaning If proper cleaning of the coated facades is planned, then such facades should be cleaned at least once per year - or more often, depending on environmental load - in accordance with the following guidelines: This stain is a weather-resistant, water repelling and diffusible product for interior use. The hard stain finish maintains the natural look of the wood including its structure, color, etc. Unlike varnish, it does not result in a glossy look, which is foreign to wood, and you can still feel the texture of the wood when you touch the surface. Hard stain, especially in combination with larch wood, is a true alternative to achieve the natural, aesthetic, unaltered appearance of the wood with a natural feel. To care for and/or to recondition, GAULHOFER Care Liquid can be applied easily with a cloth. 40 fig. 72 1. Pure water, also with slight addition of neutral or slightly alkaline cleaning agents. Mechanical cleaning can be achieved by using a soft, non-abrasive cloth or rag. 2. The facade elements should be cleaned in cold condition (max. 25o). 3. The cleaning agents should only be used in cold condition (max. 25o). Do not use steam cleaners. 4. Do not use acidic or highly alkaline cleaning and wetting agents that may damage aluminium. 5. Do not use abrasive agents (abrasive cleaning). Only use cloths and industrial cotton wool for cleaning. Do not excessively rub. 41 TIPS FOR VISIONARIES 6. Do not use organic solvents containing esters, ketones, alcohols, aromatic compounds, glycol ether or halogenated hydrocarbons. 7. Do not use cleaning agents with unknown composition. 8. Removal of fatty, oily or sooty substances can be made with mineral spirits free of aromatic compounds. Residues of adhesives, silicone rubber or adhesive edges etc. can also be removed this way. Immediate removal is essential. 9. Maximum residence time of such cleaning agents must not exceed one hour; cleaning can be repeated after min. 24 hours, if required. 6.6 Hardware All movable hardware must be checked at least once a year for wear and tear and firm fit and greased or oiled afterwards. Grease the locking bolt and locking components with commercial, acid free grease (available from home improvement retailers and automotive supply stores) and apply a few drops of oil to the lock bar beneath all guiding slots. Afterwards open and close the unit several times. Locking components 10. Rinse with sufficient amounts of clean cold water immediately after each cleaning process. Maintenance and damage repair An automobile polish that contains color pigments can be used to hide fine scratches on the powdered aluminium finish. This product can be purchased at automobile supply stores in a variety of basic colors (red, white, blue, etc.). Deep scratches and manual damage can be patched up as follows: • Lightly sand the damaged area. • Fill the damaged area with polyester cement and sand until smooth. • Remove dust. • Tape off the damaged part of the window at the miter joints, protect the remaining parts of the window. • Apply multiple layers of the powder-coating spray with the proper glossdegree available from GAULHOFER. • Polish the remaining parts of the window according to care instructions (9.2.1), in order to even out the contrast with the newly coated parts. fig. 73 6.6.1 Shutter hardware 6.4.2 Anodized aluminium Use exclusively pH-neutral (pH between 5 and 8) cleansing agents (e.g.: dish detergent.) Even very dirty anodized surfaces may only be cleaned with materials that are non-scratching and non-abrasive such as cleansing agents available in specialty supply stores. 6.5 Glass surfaces We recommend you use conventional, ammonium-chloride-free glass cleaner. Prevent the cleansing agent from coming in contact with the finished surface of wood windows. Use soft cleaning cloths (not steel wool or scouring pads) on the glass. Heavy build-up of dirt resulting from tar or paint spatter can be carefully dissolved or removed with spirit, acetone or petroleum. Afterwards the glass surface must be cleaned with water. Do not use metal objects such as razor blades. Alkaline solutions, acids or cleaning agents containing fluorides should not be used for cleaning. The glass surface must be protected from • mortar spatter, untreated concrete surfaces, asbestos sheeting • sweat, flying sparks (from work with a cutoff wheel) • acidic fassade brick cleaning agents 42 fig. 74 43 TIPS FOR VISIONARIES ���� 6.7 Seals/ Weather stripping Seals and/or weather stripping may only be cleaned using a mild general cleansing agent. We recommend the weather strip protection maintenance tool that is part of the Vinyl Cleaning Kit for the care and maintenance of weather stripping. This tool maintains the pliability of weather stripping and prevents premature brittleness. For sliding doors, permanent underlay or support, such as blocks (do not use wedges!) have to be installed at a distance of approx. 500mm (1.5’) apart, between floor and frame. � Caution: The guide rail for vinyl parallel fold and slide units must be underlaid after installation. 7. INSTALLATION The quality of the installation or rather the wall connection is key for the proper functioning and ease of operation of the units. OK prefab inside flooring When installing, expansion, attachment and structural calculations have to be considered and the wall connection to the building has to be completed according to the proper technical requirements. (See your local building code or standard). 7.1 Fastening There are to be no loads on the window. Any load must be picked up within the building structure and may not rest on the window or door units. Choosing the correct type and arrangement of shoring as well as the proper fastening material for the part that is being installed ensures this. The choice of fastening material must be made according to the loads that come to bear, the adjacent elements and the movement that occurs in the wall connection. VENTILATION, CONDENSATION (CONDENSATE), FLOOR � Excessive exposure to humidity (maximum of 60%) should be prevented, as it leads to consequential damage such as swelling of wood components, deformation of parts, corrosion damage of the hardware, peeling varnish, formation of mold and an unhealthy living environment. Use quick-drying cement flooring Normally ventilation is prohibited for 14 days with classic concrete flooring, to ensure that the floor surface is firm enough and has sufficient load bearing capability. The construction humidity thus remains in the ambient air of the building. In case of wood and wood & aluminium windows this moisture penetrates the varnished wood. This may cause swelling of the wood and cause irreparable damage. GAULHOFER does not accept any liability in this event. Regular and sufficient ventilation is beneficial for: 1. Healthy living: Oxygen intake for breathing and release of contaminated air. Especially in the case of vinyl windows, unhealthy mold may form when moisture penetrates into the masonry. 2. Energy conservation: Ventilating when required prevents unnecessary cooling down of the interior walls and thus saves energy. • Rotting How to make the most from the benefits of quick-drying cement flooring The advantages of quick-drying flooring are self-evident: Most quickdrying flooring can already be walked on, i.e. be ventilated, within 2 days at the most (concrete flooring: approximately 14 days drying time). This means that elements such as windows or walls are protected from moisture damage, which is not the case with the drying time required for regular cement floors. Due to the shorter drying time of the quick-drying cement flooring, the adjoining elements (such as walls) do not have time to absorb moisture, which is a good foundation for a healthy, pleasant living and/or work environment. • Damage to finish Also, expensive dryers are not required for quick drying cement flooring! Causes of high air humidity • Building moisture – especially after stucco, floor and paint work. However, the decisive advantage is the considerably shorter construction period that results from the extremely fast drying of the quick drying cement flooring – as in “time is money.” These positive factors definitely weigh in against the potentially higher cost. 3. Prevention of construction damage. Too much humidity leads to formation of condensation on windows and walls Consequences: • Mold formation • Damp rooms such as bathrooms, showers, laundry rooms, indoor swimming pools and basements. Prevention of condensate formation • Basic principle: Allow moist air to escape! • Ventilate frequently throughout the day depending on the degree of moisture. Open the window as wide as possible (ventilation burst). •���� Turn off the heat when you ventilate (room temperature not below 15°C). • Use trickle ventilation in your bedroom during the winter season in order to ensure a minimum air exchange. • Using the trickle ventilation during winter can cause condensation. • In case of temporary high humidity of more than 60% ventilation is necessary several times a day. � Tips for the planning phase • Install heaters below windows. • If possible, position your window centrally in the window well or on the insulation level if present. • Install air conditioning in indoor swimming pool facilities. • Install concrete flooring after interior stucco has dried. Condensate formation in the insulation glass component Condensation (condensate) may form on the exterior glass surfaces when the glass surface is cooler than the ambient air. The formation of condensation on the exterior glass surfaces of the insulation glass pane is controlled by the thermal bridging value, the air humidity, the air circulation as well as the temperature on the inside, as well as outside. The formation of condensation on interior windowpane surfaces is increased when air circulation is restricted, e.g. due to deep window wells, curtains, flowerpots, Venetian blinds, etc. as well as by the inappropriate positioning of heaters, etc. In case of insulation glass with high thermal protection, temporary condensation and/or ice may form on the side exposed to the elements, when the humidity of the outside air (relative exterior air humidity) is high and the ambient air temperature is higher than the temperature of the surface of the windowpane. Formation of condensation water In case of very high air humidity, moisture will penetrate the fitting rebate via the joints between wing and frame. There are very low temperatures at such location so that even a low amount of moisture may result in formation of condensation water. Even though such condition is only given for a short period every day, this may be sufficient for formation of condensation water. On the other hand, air circulation in the rebate often is not sufficient to achieve drying so that the amount of water increases every day.
