A Greater Force Competition, you either love it or hate it. Many Porsche enthusiasts love it all, from spectating to behind the wheel racing or entering your car in a show. For those of you that don’t know, I thrive on competition. I want to be the best. At the Zone 8 banquet, the best of the best for all of Southern California, Arizona and Southern Nevada were honored right here in Newport Beach. Three out of the four “Best of” awards in the concours division were given to OCR members, in addition to one auto-x award. What does it take to be the best? First is perseverance, these individuals attended more than 50% of all of the zone 8 concours or auto-x competitions across three states. The second key to success is excellence; you not only have to show up but you have to be skilled enough in your class to win even when MARCH 2011 taking on competitors you may not ever have come into contact with during our local competitions. The last and most important attribute is to have a winning personality and have fun during the competitions. At the end of the day it’s about the people, the great camaraderie we get out of friendly competition and enjoying our cars. Take your Porsche experience to the next level by showing your car for the first time, attending your first auto-x, competing in the entire OCR auto-x season or go for the ultimate level of competition by participating across the Zone throughout 2011. It was hosted for the third consecutive year by Walter’s Porsche at their Riverside location where many Club members proudly displayed their street and race Porsches in the service bays. Walter’s provided an excellent selection of food and beverages. Over 100 drivers, family members and friends attended this annual AutoX event to relive the funfilled Autocross season and share memories and victories with the award winners. After relaxing with co-drivers and friends and enjoying the drinks and hors d’oeuvres provided by Walter’s, the group was welcomed to the party by Walter’s Porsche Audi General Manager, Ed McRae. MARCH 2011 10 Goodwood Revival 2010 Story by Garey Cooper Garey & Maxine ready to reach for the clouds The Goodwood Revival is held every year in Sussex, England at the site of the former Goodwood Racetrack, which is, coincidentally, the site of a World War II auxiliary fighter base. The fighter base was called “Westhampnett”. In addition, the Goodwood Manor House is the home of the Earls of March and a grand exemplar of the olde English Manor Houses. Famed for their horses, there have been horse races at Goodwood for more than a century. If all of this isn’t enough history in one place for you, the racetrack is also the location where Sterling Moss had his career ending crash into the banking at Woodcote Corner. The crash put him into a coma for a month and broke several bones in several places. After his recovery, a short test drive convinced him that he was done forever as a top line race car driver capable of winning Grand Prix. A decision that I submit took every bit as much courage as did driving a car at 10/10. As I said, a lot of history and in modern days the history returns periodically and colorfully to the same place year after year. For several years I’ve watched the videos that come out of Goodwood and the “You Tube” coverage of the event. It has always been intriguing and one of my ambitions to actually go see the sights and hear the sounds of Goodwood in person. Then one day in 2009, Mrs. Cooper said, “Well if you want to go that much, let’s plan it”. I think I had either taken the trash out on time or emptied the dishwasher to deserve this! I can’t recall except emergency vehicles. Even walking because, like ol’ Stirling, from the parking lot to the front gate I went into a six month was a wonderful experience. I love helping people sell their cars. It wasn’t always like that. I sold my first car nearly 20 years ago and I swore (like many people) I would never do it again. I figured that next time I would trade it in and save myself the hassle… even though I would get less money. However when “next-time” rolled around, I thought, “how hard can it be?” Well, over 500 cars later, it is still hard. But I love it. Selling cars, especially Porsches, is an art. It’s all about removing your emotion from the sale and making room for the new owner’s enthusiasm. I think this is why consignment appeals to me. It is sharing someone’s passion and passing it on, like passing a torch during the Olympics. There are several major components to properly marketing a Porsche. First, understand what you have and how it fits into the marketplace. Next, provide good pictures and description as well as effective ad placement. Finally, answer buyers’questions and eliminate their fears. However, the most critical component is pricing. It doesn’t matter how good you are at the other elements, if your car is priced too high it will most likely not sell. This is the one area that is the most difficult to discuss with enthusiasts who bring me their cars to sell. It’s like selling your baby. We become attached 12 to these cars and tend you that the vultures will start circling. to see past their flaws Unfortunately, most people waste time and shortcomings. and money because they don’t know This is why it is so how to look for comps. Options, color tough telling the and after market upgrades will also affect owners what their car the price. Typically, an unpopular color is worth. Most car (i.e. yellow, red, tan, gold or variations salespeople fear this of these) could reduce the value by up to 10%. In many cases, a tiptronic conversation and tend transmission can reduce the value from to buckle and tell the 5-10% as well. Lastly, custom wheels owner whatever they and similar touches are very personal want to hear. In the and may not be liked by potential future end, that never works owners. All of these elements play a roll out. The dealership in your car’s value. ends up frustrated that Let’s start with a popular place they can’t sell the car that most sellers look for comps - Auto and, even worse, the owner becomes Trader. When you do a search on this disappointed. site, you need to look at the entire country Over the years I have come to realize for 1999-2001, with under 45k miles that pricing these cars is much harder than (should be at least 20k miles more than it looks. I am going to walk you through your car), and sort from least expensive the maze of determining your Porsche’s to most. Most people make their search value by using an example. Let’s say you too narrow by looking at only their year have a 2000 Porsche 996/911 Tiptronic and in their area. The search results Coupe with 30,000 miles for sale and you will first show you cars for sale called are going to go online to figure out what “Premier” listings. These are mostly ads your car is worth before either listing it from large dealers. Once you get past for sale or trading it in. these, you will find “Featured” listings. People who might be in the market These ads are closer to what the market for a 996…(especially the early models) will typically pay. are going to be primarily price focused. People online are very savvy buyers The reason for this is that the 2002-2005 and are motivated by price. Outside 996 cars have a 3.6L engine instead of of vintage models, the primary reason the 3.4L, different and unique front fascia (avoiding the confusion with a Boxster) people look to buy a used late model Porsche is to save money. and fewer issues concerning the rear Most Porsche sellers think the old main seal engine failure problem. So, philosophy of price high and you can knowing all this, you have to look at all the cars on the market from 1999-2001. They are all basically the same with the only difference being that the 2001 had far fewer issues than the earlier models. The first place you might go to is Kelly Blue Book but KBB doesn’t actually sell cars. It simply looks at averages. Similar to selling a house, you have to look at the comps in the market. In fact, for every month you have your car listed at the wrong price, you can see anywhere from a $250 to a $500 value drop just because it is out there and buyers start to feel like Early 996 Carerra is still a very desirable Porsche you might become desperate. Story by Moe Mistry If there’s one aspect of detailing that I’d say is most important yet overlooked, it would be washing. Think about it; you pay hundreds, maybe thousands, to get a proper detail. You’re given a car that is almost flawless and has never looked so great. But now what? What are you going to do to keep it looking this way? Well, this is where it gets puzzling. Do you take it to the car wash, pay a detailer at the office or do it yourself? The first two choices are the least labor intensive. I mean, how hard is to take the car to the local Chevron or Auto Spa, hand over the keys to some guy you don’t know and a latte and 20 minutes later, your car is shiny and clean. Or, let’s step it up a notch and hand it over to the local wash guy that makes his rounds at your office. Surely he must do a much better job, and you never left the office. Well my friends, this convenience comes at a cost. The cost may be swirls, 14 scratches or a dent that you know wasn’t there before but you’re being told it was. Who knows what else. What I’m trying to lead you to is how simple and rewarding a wash can be if you have the correct technique and products. So let’s start with most basic of ingredients, soap. There’s a reason you see soaps specifically made for automotive finish. Paint has its own natural oils that are there to maintain gloss, and in some areas, flexibility. By using dish soap, cheap automotive soap or petroleum-based soaps, you’re robbing the finish of its oils. The solution is using a high-quality, pH balanced soap that is gentle on the finish and is effective at removing grime. You’ll notice one main difference between a high quality soap opposed to an inferior one: how little product is used. There are several high quality soaps from P21S, Sonax, Lumiere, einszett, etc. Spending a little extra on the soap also saves the wax on the car from diminishing prematurely. What you wash the car with is just as important as what soap is used. Your choices are wide: synthetic sheepskin, microfiber, foam sponge or my favorite all-natural Australian or New Zealand sheepskin. Synthetic sheepskin is a cheaper alternative to the real version but I find the nap to become stiff and almost brillo-like after a few washes. Microfiber is soft in the beginning but traps dirt; over time, you end up rubbing the embedded dirt into the finish causing scratches. The foam sponge isn’t all that bad, but once again, you run the risk of dirt getting trapped in the cells of the sponge. The reason I prefer natural sheepskin is that it’s the softest of all choices. Natural sheepskin is very gentle and won’t harm the finish. Now that you’ve selected the right soap and mitt, what will you use to dry? Your choices are simple; cotton (Continued on Page 33) Rice’s Ramblings Story by Lee Rice, OCR Technical Writer My last article concerned service and maintaining your Porsche, mostly about the 911-model line. Many things written are not exclusive to a 911, every Porsche is a rather unique and fascinating machine that needs some attention. When Porsche owners get involved in Concours and cleaning or some minor repairs it becomes apparent that the quality of design and build is remarkable. It can be interesting, and even fun, to realize the value of the Porsche one pays so dearly for! In addition to my long service article, I had a close friend (not named to protect the unaware) tell me of his plight after a long wet drive in his special car. Apparently California freeways are susceptible to rain damage and when one encounters a pot hole late on a Sunday night’s drive home followed by a loud ‘bang!’; a safe slow down and pull over revealed a flat, shredded tire! Then the fun began: deciding either to wait for a tow, change of wheel/tire or do-it-yourself in the rain? The wait was only a half an hour but then the owner was unable to find the wheel lock tool! Fortunately the tow home was covered by his ‘auto club’ but the situation could have been much worse! A question to all Porsche owners is: Do you know if you have wheel locks installed on your Porsche? And if you do, do you know where your lock tool is? Are you sure? Have you looked through you factory tool kit, curious to see what is in it? Is it complete? MARCH 2011 Factory tool kits are becoming very expensive, if not impossible, to replace. Some individual tool items are impossible to find anymore. You may find you need one of those special tools even with an ‘auto club’ tow or repair. Such as the tow hook that goes into the front of your bumper. That’s what is behind that little round outline. Without some tools you may only get a tow to an “as close as possible repair service station” or maybe a motel. The chances of this repair station having a suitable tool are not too good. So, everyone owning a Porsche should do two things: 1. Read your owners manual. In spite of a lot of legally required info (boring), there is a wealth of information you should at least have some idea about. 2. Look through your tool kit. Make sure it is complete. In addition, make sure you have at least one good working flashlight! I have become a fan of the (2ea) AA LED (Continued on Page 28) 15 Feature: Awards Party: (Continued from page 8) jackets in recognition of their individual contribution to the Walter’s Team support to our Club. Walter then provided an interesting and amusing summary of his journey from New York City mechanic to becoming the successful owner of Walter’s Automotive Group. He claims he never sold a car and we have his name on it (author’s note: not likely)! Walter also mentioned that he was proud to be associated with our Club and offered words of encouragement and praise for our Autocross program! Another Club sponsor, Omniplatform, was recognized for their contributions during 2010 to our Club website which is a key element of our AUTO-X program. Drew Jorgenson, owner and founder, accepted a Sponsor trophy and jackets for members of his team that made the extra effort to design and launch our website in the spring of 2010. Most of you probably don’t know that our new website was only a few months old when it won fifth place (Class 5 Region – largest clubs) in the 2010 Porsche Parade national website competition. AUTO-X Event Sponsor awards were presented next to those companies that sponsored individual or multiple AUTO-X events throughout the season: • Autowerkes – Bruce Powers; • Cape Auto Repair – James Buck; • FMC Loan Pros – Steve Eguina; • GMG Motorsports - James Sofronas & Fabryce Kutyba; • Hergesheimer Motorsports – Mark & Laura Hergesheimer; • Racing LifeStyle – Michael Eguina; and • Vision Motorsports – Dwain Dement; The support provided by these sponsors is highly valued and a key element of our AUTO-X program. The highlight of the party, eagerly anticipated by the drivers, was the presentation of the coveted Championship Jackets and Trophies to each of the 34 Class First Place Winners; 15 Second and 4 Third place trophies were also presented. Our Driving Instructor Co-Chiefs and brothers, Rick and Dennis Neff, presented the Instructor of the Year Award. Honoree Steve Abbott, who has donated countless hours to track walks prior to every event in addition to many hours of in-car instruction to Club Members, shared his expertise on how to attack the track, Thank you Steve! All the AUTO-X drivers also want to thank both David and Attila Szilagyi for their many hours spent designing and ‘throwing’ the tracks for all our events. The ‘hot-shoes’ were eagerly awaiting the announcement of the Top Gun Award that recognizes the single driver with the highest score for the season using the BRI (Bench Racing Index) for each Autocross event. The award, presented by Emeritus Steve Eguina, went to David Palmquist. The last award of the evening went to James Buck, the out-going AUTO-X Co-chair, (See Photos Page 17) (Continued on Page 21) (Continued on Page 21) Law Offices of Joseph C. Nedza Retired O.C. The Bobbies get their man goods including “Sugar Snacks” and “Wheaties” from Kellogs in what looked like the original boxes. One could buy “Bangers and Mash” at a walk up stand or do “Tea and Crumpets”. “Fish and Chips” were served in conically folded old newspapers, which as the grease melted stained both the fish and the hands of the purchaser. For our lunch we ate in the “bunker” which was a World War II Tent Mess with sandbag entrance and several warnings to watch what you said as, “The enemy could be listening”. I must go back to Westhampnett and talk about the airplanes. There were several “fly by’s” of some significant World War II aircraft. Among these were a Spitfire, a Mustang, a Bearcat and incredibly a Lancaster heavy bomber. Reputedly the only one left in service in the world. As a tribute to the people who served in that conflict, there was a formation fly-over with the Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane on each wing of the Lancaster. With “Auld Lang Sine” playing, there were few dry eyes in the house. One of the early flyers to lose his life in 22 the war was an American. His name was Billy Fiske and he was an honoree for the weekend. He had flown a Hurricane and landed at Westhampnett after a dogfight when it was an emergency field for shot up airplanes and wounded flyers. I understand the Hurricanes had something of a reputation as “Ronsons”, named after the ubiquitous cigarette lighter of that era. This meant that they would brew up in flames given any kind of chance. Official records state Fiske’s aircraft was on fire as it rolled across the field after landing and he had to be pulled from the flames, unable to extricate himself. The official record also states that he lived for three days afterwards. What the official record cannot really relate is what a terrible three days those must have been. Billy Fiske is buried nearby Goodwood in a country church. As a “car guy” he owned a sporting car himself. It’s nice to think he’d enjoy the whole idea of the revival. The historic races are separated into classes, depending upon the era and classification in which they raced. These classes went on into the 1970s so there were some relatively recent cars on hand and more than a few Porsches. In the infield garage area there was a reproduction Porsche shop reproduced exactly as it would have been in the early or late 1950s with engines on rebuild stands and cars on lifts. The mechanics were actually from the factory and in my talks with them they appeared to be having a great time of it. The most famous car in the Porsche garage was “Grossmutter” which was a championship hill climb car. It was fabulously light and carried a very potent flat eight motor. For me, there were two cars that were the most interesting. The first was a V16 1.5 liter (or litre as the Brits would have it) that was a mechanical marvel in its day. The marvel, I suppose, also consisted of the amazing fact the thing ran at all as it was notoriously fussy. If one was lucky enough to get it all lit up and firing, it wouldn’t run without more snorts, backfires and bucks than any wild horse at less than about a zillion RPM. But when this thing cleared its throat, got on the cams and ran down the straight, it sounded as if all Hades had been let loose and the very furies were pushing the pistons up and down. Since the car is front engine and the motor is directly in front of the driver, it had to be almost excruciating to be just behind all that noise and complication. You could almost hear the driver thinking, “if this thing let’s loose I’m going to be wearing a connecting rod bow tie.” Mrs. Maxine Cooper enjoys the new Jaguar (Continued on Page 23) Goodwood: (Continued from page 22) The second most interesting car for me was another copy of my first racing car, a Kieft formula junior. Counting the one I almost had that had been sold by some Philistine before I could get to it, that would make three of the five every built that I have personally seen. A gentleman named Michael Madden owned this particular Kieft. He kindly spent some time with me discussing the car I had, his own car and how he had brought it back to the track. When I related to him that some mad Englishman had cut off every other vane on the water pump he looked at me sternly and said, “Where these were built overheating was not a big issue.” He did admit that a known weakness of the chassis is the cooling system and anything more than about a nanosecond on the pre-grid brings them to a boil nicely (tea anyone?) The other Kieft I am familiar with is now domiciled in Northern California and is owned by Mr. Marc Nichols. Having been to the historic races in Monterrey several times and then just this year to the historic races at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, I can compare the events and venues. Monterrey is spread out over the peninsula and each event requires a separate ticket. The Infineon races are in their infancy and need a bit Sister car to my old Kieft Formula junior, there were exactly 5 made, or maybe 6 no one is really sure of time to see how they’ll evolve. But Goodwood is truly the class of the bunch. One ticket to see the entire shindig with the only exception being if you actually want to sit in a grandstand it will be a little extra. For any car person, I urge your attendance. Bring the significant other and if not a car person they can dress up and play like Clement Attlee if you are into that sort of thing! After this I get to see Buffalo, New York in February. Ah, the glamour of travel. Then, a week or so later I’ll be in Indianapolis. I am especially looking forward to Indy of course. It has been some years since I’ve been there and I am itching to see the track and museum again. Now, how do you hide that on an expense account? So 2011 is going to see me moving around quite a bit. I edited it and yanked a whole raft of comma’s out. Don’t worry, I have them stored for future use. They are small, light weight and the batteries last a long time. Rain I drove my Evo 911 almost every day over the Christmas Holidays during the heavy rains and I still found small things that are problems with rain. I suggest to owners of older Porsche models that they look under the foot well floorboards for water egress. Water can collect from bad windshield seals, and even wet shoes dripping on the carpets, seeping through to the metal floor panel. It collects under the floor boards where little heat reaches to dry it. Over time the protective coatings wear and rust starts. It is a good idea to take a look in there and if needed, after everything dries, spend a little time cleaning, priming and painting. I like using RustOleum”® and then find no further issues arise. Window seals dry and shrink; water can seep around the seals and into the window glass sills and cause rust. Most professional glass installers are pretty savvy with Porsche requirements and know which sealants will not dry hard and shrink. On a related note I have continued to be amazed with the new BOSCH “EVO” wiper blades. A clean sweep every wipe! I don’t care if they do cost a few bucks more; they work! RICE PHONE (714) 539-1042 BY APPOINTMENT ONLY E-MAIL [email protected] Selling Your Car: (Continued from Page 12) come down holds true. Unfortunately, with the internet, that has all changed. The key for these cars is simply “value.” You have to put yourself in the buyers’ shoes to realize their choices and why they would decide to buy your car. Pretend that you are looking for your own car. So ask yourself, if you were buying a 996 and were interested in a 1999-2001 because of the incredible value (really the only reason to consider these years), how much would you be willing to spend? When you do the proper search, you will find most of the cars listed are in the midlow $20k range. In fact, if you find 5 similar Porsches to yours that are lower in price, you are probably priced too high. Yes, you will see several priced very high but those cars will sit on the market for a long time. An old dealership owner/ friend of mine once said, “if no one calls [on your car], either you haven’t paid your phone bill or the price is too high.” I know that your car is special and perfect but when you start looking out there, most (not all) Porsches for sale are well cared for and show the owner’s pride. The first mistake you might make is to decide that your car is special and price it closer to $30k instead of $25k. Several things can happen. First, when people do searches they sometimes put a dollar level ceiling to their search and it always ends in a zero or five. That is why you would price your car at $24,990 versus $25,000. Second, you have to consider competing models. If you were looking to buy a late model Porsche in the $30k range, your choices would be even better. Porsche 996 C4S cars with 50k miles are selling in the mid-$30ks. 2005 997 Carreras with similar mileage are also in the mid-$30ks. You can even find 2001 996 Twin Turbos with 50k miles in the high 30s. So, why would someone want to buy your 2000 Porsche for $30k when there are these other great choices available for not much more? EBay is another great tool for comps. Perform a search similar to Autotrader with one slight addition. There is a button by the search results that says, “completed listings.” This reveals all the closed auctions. The key here is that you can see what sold and what didn’t and how high the bidding got. This will further help confirm what the proper price for your Porsche should be. In this market, I have found that typically, if you do everything right, your car should sell rather quickly. My average has been less than 45 days and within 5% of asking price. Usually, the first offer tends to be the best. You will get lots of annoying calls, crazy offers, fraudulent emails and time-wasting requests. If you remain patient, the right buyers will present themselves. They are almost always the easiest to work with. Happy Selling. “Amazing! My name is David Witteried and I am your Zone 8 Autocross Chairman. If you have attended any of the Zone 8 autocrosses in the last few years you may have met me as I try to get my yellow 1976 911S Targa out to the autocross track every chance I get. One of my goals is to try to get more members to compete in the Zone 8 Autocross Series. So far there are 8 races on the calendar for this year. To qualify for a trophy you must compete in 40 percent of the year’s events in a single class (i.e. 4 events at this time). Novices can qualify for an award if they compete in 4 events in that class. Last year there were 6 awards made at the Zone 8 Awards Banquet. However, there were 20 drivers who needed only 1 more event to qualify, and 43 other drivers that needed 2 more events! Let’s see more of you make just a few more events so you can qualify for an end of year award as well. Some of you may feel that you’re not good enough to compete… but like the lottery, you can’t win if you don’t play! And for me, playing with my favorite toy and sharing the fun with my PCA friend’s is the best way to enjoy my Porsche! So mark the dates on your calendar and join us at the track! I know that some of the Regions have their own autocross series during the year. I would still encourage you to try some events outside of your local area. The various Regions each have distinctive characters, with different participants and venues. Some tracks favor high horsepower cars, while others favor small lightweight cars! Two of my favorite things about autocrossing are that every track is different and you get to meet lots of new people along the way! The first autocrosses of the season are a 1-2 punch on the 20th and 21st of March. I plan on attending both events and so can you! Please visit the Zone 8 web site events calendar for a complete list of events scheduled this year. The rules book is also available on the web site so you can download and print it. The web site address is http://zone8.pca.org/. If you have any questions also feel free to contact me, my email address is [email protected]. See you on the track! What a shame. With what appears to be a sweep of the automobile greats, it is reported that Ferdinand Piëch’s VW Gruppe is about to aquire FERRARI. Can you imagine? So what is stopping the VW Gruppe from using all their now owned factory test tracks to run races against each brands team cars? Cheating would be most difficult as each of these manufacturers knows each other tricks. So, maybe we could actually see real Ferrari racing real Porsche (GT2RS), racing real Bugatti, Audi, and all comers. Why Not? This yields clean and powerful air in a compact unit. The result is drying without ever touching the finish. Finally, the water you use is important. How many times do you find yourself chasing the sun and working fast to prevent water spots when washing? This not only leads to potential damage, but it simply takes the fun out of caring for your car. Enter de-ionized water. DI water systems simply take the Calcium and Magnesium ions, the hard water ingredients, and exchange them into Hydrogen and Hydroxide ions. Result…pure H2O. CR Spotless makes an excellent system. The units start at $299.99 DI Water gives you pure water without any dissolved solids. Translation…no water spots! Even in direct sunlight. I hope this article has shed some light on how important such a simple task can be. Stay clean my friends! bath towel, synthetic chamois, natural chamois, microfiber drying cloth or air dry. The cotton towel is old technology and should be left in the shower. The nap of the towel will actually scratch today’s soft automotive finish. Synthetic chamois trap dirt over time and scratch the finish. Anyone who’s used a natural chamois can attest to its glue-like suction power, not to mention the oil used in the tanning process strips the wax from the finish. The newest technology replacing chamois is microfiber drying cloths. Try to get one with a foam core that is waffle weave. The waffle pattern allows you to feel the finish and know when you need to polish or clay again. The foam is an excellent buffer between your hand and the finish assuring you don’t press too hard, therefore minimizing holograms. The ideal way of drying is to air dry or force air dry. If you have the convenience of using de-ionized water, you can simply air dry or use a forced air dryer such as an Airmax.
