Short positioning in canola and wheat proved beneficial. Bearish action in precious metals continued with gold prices dropping more than 29% on the year, being one of the largest overall positive contribution for the year. UBSA Bank Bill Index Mar 11 Notable losses were incurred in bonds and interest rates sectors. Five year treasuries were most affected with yields climbing sharply for the first time in three months. Small long positions were reduced significantly through the month to end almost flat. MSCI World (TR) Index Dec 10 Credit contribution was also strong with positive economic news and messages from the Fed encouraging a further significant tightening in spreads. Man AHL Alpha (AUD) Jun 10 Within currencies, there was a strong continuation of trend with the euro appreciating 25% year to date against the JPY. Short positions in BRL added significantly as the currency saw further weakness despite overnight rates being raised. Returns Sep 10 Markets traded nervously towards the last FOMC meeting believing it would signal the start of QE tapering. Leading up to the meeting, stocks sold off on weaker news in Europe, and the S&P 500 retreated from recent new highs. As at 31 December 2013^ Mar 10 Against the backdrop of the beginning of the end of QE, December proved to be slightly volatile with gains in stocks, currencies and credit offset by losses in bonds and interest rates.
