In the comments to previous articles of this blog like So you want to do Articleship?, of ten students keep asking f or a list of ‘good’ CA Firms. I would again repeat what I have written in replies that there is no such list of ‘good’ CA Firms. All f irms are good provided one f its in it. 1. Good Firms for Articleship? 2. Yet conf used, why there is no such list? If you are a CA student, and still trying to f ind a f irm f or articleship training, then read on. While the ICAI has members directory, the CAs and CA Firms cannot be f ound as brand products. T he reason is simple. CA f irms cannot advertise their services ! Consequently, the students of Chartered Accountancy Course are hard pressed to f ind f irms f or articleship training. Of ten students would like to have a list of “good” f irms. Its only a matter as to how one f its in to that f irm. But more than that, the dynamics of f irm is dependent on various f actors that makes it good or not so good f rom the perspective of the student: 1) Availability of work: T he CA student is brimming with drive to get opportunity to do work that is meaningf ul to him. So s/he would pref er to do training in a f irm that has plenty of work. However f rom perspective of f irm ‘work’ is not static. T his may change f rom time to time. For example, (a) f irms having statutory audit of banks f or certain number of years are put on compulsory rest f or certain years. (b) T he clients may change due to nature of work. For example when use of internet f or ef iling of returns had started, it created a situation where some CAs did not have adequate inf rastructure, and theref ore they had to outsource their work to other CAs ! And so on… 2) Division of Work among Partners: T he Partners may have divided the work among themselves. So one partner may be f ocusing on Income Tax, the other may be on Company Laws and the third one may be looking af ter Audit. So, the student doing articleship under the particular Principal would have more of particular kind of work. In one of the f irm where I did articleship, my Principal was looking af ter income tax, so I had more of income tax, whereas the other partner was looking af ter Company Law, so Company Law related work was nearly non existent f or me. 3) Standing of the Firm: Of ten new f irms do not have much work. However, such CAs are more accessible to their Articles. And also of ten such CAs get dif f erent kinds of outsourced works f rom other CAs. In contrast big f irms may have large number of works, and due to the nature of work, the Article working in a Big Firm may be doing only one kind of work without getting exposure in other aspects. 4) Departmentalization in the Firm: Some f irms pref er to organise their work in departments, and they tend to assign their Articles to such departments. So, an Article working in one department may not be aware of the intricacies of working of the other department. 5) Career Objective of the Article : A simple thumb rule is that if the objective of Article is to go f or employment af ter qualif ying, then they should go f or Bigger f irm, and join the particular department in which one wants to make a career. In contrast, f or those who want to go f or Practice it is pref erable that they join a mid-size f irm where one can get diversity of exposure. 6) Taking Transfer: ICAI keeps on changing the rules of transf er f rom time to time. However, f or the student, it is of ten a good thing if they work in more than one f irm in their span of articleship duration. T his is quite helpf ul f or them in their career. 7) City of Articleship : In general, the economic scene in India is pretty much skewed. And CA (in most cases) being a localised prof ession, the kind of jobs that come to CAs are most of the time local. So a company in say Hyderabad would not go to get its audit done f rom a Kolkata f irm. T his leads to a situation, that in cities where there is lots of business the work available is more. So in Metros and mini Metros, there is of ten a better chance of a good exposure than doing articleship f rom other towns. Another thing is that of ten in a city where there is a High Court, the Tax related works are to be f ound with Lawyers. T his is because, Lawyers can represent their clients in Tribunals and also High Court and Supreme Court. Whereas, the CA cannot represent the client in HC or SC. (And till date NT T has not come into existence). So in such cities while the Tax audit work would come to CA, in many cases, the tax work would remain with the Lawyer. 8 ) T he Local Language: T his is an important aspect, which is of ten not understood. T here are various local laws that a business has to comply with. Like Sales Tax, Municipal Laws etc. Apart f rom this, there are local purchases etc. Of ten, such records are in the local language. Moreover, whether it be work of audit or tax, the people one is dealing as an Article, are more conversant with the local language. So, unless one knows the local language well, it becomes dif f icult to understand or extract inf ormation f rom the clients. Tips for Finding Firm for Articleship Training Generally one should start searching f or the f irm in right earnest af ter one has appeared f or the exam. One should be clear as to what one wants to do in lif e. Because at this stage where one is going to do articleship, it is like getting initiated in the Prof ession. If the student have a clear idea of his career objectives, then the three years can be most productive and a stepping stone to a successf ul career. 1) ICAI Articleship Portal: ICAI has started the Articleship placement portal at http://bosapp.icai.org/. T his is currently (ie. 2010) working in the NCR / Delhi region. Hopef ully, this f acility would get extended f or other parts of the country. 2) Advertisements in the ICAI Offices: Vacancies f or Articleship are of ten advertised on the notice board of ICAI regional of f ices, and branch of f ices. T his is a good place to start meeting CAs, seeing their of f ice and inf rastructure, and also f ind the going rate of stipend. One can give a shot to such f irms f or vacancies f or Articled Assistant. 4) Finding Firms from Published Accounts: Published accounts are of the listed companies. Such data is of ten available on the websites of the companies. While many big companies as a thumb rule get the accounts audited by Big4, but f or others, its other CA f irms that do the audit. 5) Internet Sites and Job Portals: Now a days, I f ind that vacancies f or Articled Trainees are to be f ound even on job portals like Naukri.com ! 6) Finding Firms from the Eligible list of Bank Auditors: Every year, ICAI puts out the list of f irms who are empaneled f or that year of bank branch audit. For example f or the year 2010-11, the empaneled list is hosted at: http://www.mef icai.org/cov_letter.html 7) Finding Firms from list of CAG Empaneled Auditors: Similarly the list of auditors empaneled f or audit of Govt companies are hosted by CAG at http://cagof india.delhi.nic.in/caempanel/empstat.asp T he f irms empaneled f or PSU audits with CAG (in general) can be considered to have adequate work f or the Articled Trainee. 8 ) Getting Information from other sources: One can get inf ormation f rom relatives, f rom business f riends or contacts. Of ten accountants working in private companies would be able to tell about a f ew CAs who had done audit in their company. Even big shops like big Hotels, branded shops, big hardware shops etc can provide the names and details about CAs who do their audit or tax work. Even your local Bank branch manager or stock broker can direct you to some CA whom s/he knows.
