share their experiences.

ANNA MUELLER,
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN
QUEENSLAND
ANNA’S INTEREST in health care kicked
off when she was a surf lifesaver at Bondi
Beach in Sydney, but she settled 900
km to the north to study nursing at the
University of Southern Queensland in
Towoomba, Queensland, about an hour
and a half’s drive inland from Brisbane.
“I wanted to experience a new lifestyle,
somewhere a bit different to the city.
“Living expenses are much less, while the
overall lifestyle and social life are more laid
back and less formal. In regional areas you
eliminate travel time and traffic, leaving
you more time on your hands for sports,
socialising and relaxing.”
With a nursing shortfall in rural areas,
Anna’s also on track for her career. “I think
studying at a regional location will help me
find a job,” she says.
Her advice if you’re contemplating the
move? “What can you lose? In my first year
I lived on campus and it was a great way to
meet friends and join sporting teams.”

FRANCESCA GISSI,

HAVING SPENT some time in rural New
Zealand, Francesca was familiar with country
life. But when she took on a bachelor of
science in environmental forensics, she based
herself in Sydney, at the inner city campus of
the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
“UTS has great facilities lab-wise and
in the way they provide fieldwork. Even
though it’s in the city, it can provide all the
practical experience a scientist needs.”
Francesca loved that the degree combines
broad environmental science areas with
environmental law subjects. Being in the
city, there are a lot of job opportunities,
says Francesca, who is working at the Land
and Water division of Australia’s national
science agency, the CSIRO, while finishing
her degree. “I was fortunate to get the
internship with CSIRO and a job after that.”

students from overseas in 2010 – that’s
more than 25% of the country’s entire

Australia is a destination of
choice for international students
and it’s not just because of the
sunny weather. The Royal Melbourne
Institute of Technology (RMIT) is
attracting students from around the
globe. The university educates more
than 70,000 students, roughly 28,000 of
which hail from overseas.
Deepnisha Gungoo is a 21-year-old
international student from the Republic of
Mauritius, a tiny island off the east coast of
Africa. Gungoo, who studies food science
and technology at RMIT, says she opted for
Australia because of its leading reputation
in the field.
“RMIT appealed to me because I liked
the structure, location and facilities offered
at the city campus,” she explains. “As an
international student I was impressed with
the information RMIT provided about
housing, jobs and life in Melbourne.”
The aspiring food technologist
recently completed a work placement
at Carlton and United Breweries in
Melbourne, and says the best thing
about the program are the
field trips.
“The program involves a
lot of practical classes and
industry visits,” she says.
“These have helped me to
understand and develop
the skills and knowledge
needed to work in the
food industry.”

has 120 partner universities in 31
different countries.
Students at RMIT can choose from a
one or two semester academic exchange,
a two to four week study tour, or industry
placements for those inclined to get some
overseas work experience.
Tuncay Islek, a student at RMIT, spent
three months working at Belfast City
Hospital in Northern Ireland where he
trained as a scientist working largely
with leukaemia. “It gave me a solid
understanding of blood cancers, and the
types of tests and treatment options
available to patients,” he says.
The 23-year old also went to Vietnam
where he did a work placement at a biotech
company developing shrimp virus detection
kits. “Both were big eye-openers and fantastic
life experiences” Islek recalls. “RMIT helped
me organise the whole thing and even helped
arrange my first month’s accommodation.”
There are also short-term exchange
options. Adriana Hlede, who studies
physical education at RMIT, spent four
weeks teaching at a school in Singapore.
“The experiences I had on placement were
invaluable – meeting so many influential
teachers and having the chance to improve
my teaching skills,” she says. “It was a great
way to build networks which will help in
finding employment overseas.”
University is what you make it, so get
involved and talk to advisors about the
possibility of doing an exchange.

explore practical work with an innovative
virtual learning tool called Pharmatopia.
Undergraduates can carry out a range of
activities through the online laboratory
that’s available 24/7, and which teaches
students everything from laboratory safety
to formulating tablets.
“Pharmatopia is a collaboration of 12
universities from around the world with
each member in the process of building
a virtual world,” said Ian Larson, senior
lecturer and researcher at the Monash
Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. “By
engaging students in the process we can be
sure that they will retain more information
and learn practical skills for themselves.”
If you prefer to view things at an
atomic rather than a virtual level, the
Monash Centre for Electron Microscopy
is a base for studying the structure of
everyday materials at the small scales. The
way in sustainable student
living, with the Clayton complex
being Australia’s first residential
apartment to achieve a top
Greenstar rating, which grades
the environmental sustainability
of buildings.
Centre supports research from multiple
disciplines, such as engineering, physics
and geology. Undergraduate students
have the opportunity to undertake
practical classes at the Centre during
their final year, while postgraduates can
carry out a range of research projects
tailored to their interests.
Perhaps creating hi-tech materials is
more your thing? The Melbourne Centre
for Nanofabrication is a new research
facility that’s a hub for industry and
academic partners that scientists
can access to create futuristic materials
for medicine, engineering and
biotechnology. The nanofabrication centre
