Salute to The Graduate Certificate, Master’s Degree, and Ph.D. Degree Candidates Class of 2008 27 THE HOWARD UNIVERSITY GRADUATE SCHOOL: 50 YEARS OF DOCTORAL EDUCATION The Howard University Graduate School has launched a year-long celebration saluting 50 years of doctoral education: 1958-2008. This celebration affords the University an opportunity to commemorate its accomplishments and to envision future aspirations in doctoral education. In 50 short years, Howard has made a meteoric rise in American higher education, advancing from the awarding of the first Ph.D. in 1958 to becoming a top national research university, granting nearly 100 degrees annually in 28 doctoral programs. The annual production of doctoral degree recipients and annual grant acquisitions place the University among the top echelon of higher education as classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Today, within its highly diverse graduate student body, Howard University is the largest on-campus producer of African-American Ph.D. recipients in the United States. In many ways, the Doctor of Philosophy degree is the centerpiece of a research university. This is especially true of Howard, which remains focused on addressing many of the issues that face its primary constituencies, our nation and the world, chiefly through the research work of its doctoral programs and doctoral recipients. During this Golden Anniversary year, special lectures, fundraising activities, and other events will explore previous and continuous efforts of the University through a committed cadre of professors, alumni and students. We remain true to our expanding mission as a leading university in doctoral education. Most importantly, today, May 8, 2008, the Graduate School salutes its 50th Ph.D. Anniversary Candidates. Congratulations! 28 Annual Hood Presentation Ceremony - Howard University Graduate School THE FIRST TWO PH.D. There she stands for truth and right, Sending forth her rays of light, Clad in robes of majesty; O Howard, we sing of thee. Be thou still our guide and stay, Leading us from day to day; Make us true and leal and strong, Ever bold to battle wrong. When from thee we’ve gone away, May we strive for thee each day As we sail life’s rugged sea, O Howard, we’ll sing of thee. –Words, J.H. BROOKS, ‘16 –Music, F.D.
