“A lot of us are divorced or widowed.
This just gives us something to do,” says
Gale Smith, 70, during a recent Saturday
night dinner at Della’s. “When my husband
died, I wanted to get out and meet people.”
Roger Scheusner, 70, also was looking to
fill a void.
“I was married for 35 years and my wife
died a little over a year ago,” he says. “I sat
around for awhile feeling sorry for myself,
and then more or less I signed up for everything I could find.”
Though the group is not intended to be a
place for singles to “hook up,” some of the
men and women have paired off, says Bauer,
who is now dating club member Barbara
Gurschke.

and groups geared specifically for seniors.
■ GRANTS PASS COMMUNITY CENTER,
a venue for dance and fitness classes,
dances and other activities. It’s at Fourth
and L streets in downtown Grants Pass,

■ GRANTS PASS DANCE CLUB, dancing
to live music at the Josephine County
Fairgrounds. Dances are 1 to 4 p.m.
Mondays and Fridays, 7 to 10 p.m. on the

■ ILLINOIS VALLEY SENIOR CENTER,
520 E. River St., Cave Junction. Open to
men and women age 55 and older, the center offers a variety of classes, games, special events, a monthly breakfast and regular potluck dinners. The membership fee is

■ RED HAT SOCIETY, a social group for
women age 50 and older, who wear elaborately decorated hats and other attentiongetting
accessories.

Games are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Reinhart Volunteer Park, from late

PROGRAM, a program that offers a full
range of volunteer opportunities for people
age 55 and older, in schools, public safety

■ RIVER VALLEY ADULT CENTER, a program of free quarterly classes for adults —
ranging from painting and knitting to computers and Spanish — held every first and

ASSISTANCE LEAGUE (RASCAL), a computer group for those 55 and older.
Membership is $15 per person or $20 per

Josephine County Fairgrounds. Classes
