THE ADMINISTRATION OF NORFOLK ISLAND MEDIA RELEASE Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly elections: Eligibility to stand for election and how to nominate Arrangements have commenced for the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly elections, due to be held on Wednesday 17 March. Returning Officer Mitchell Evans will publish advertisements giving details of the polling places and times in the weeks prior to the election. This is the third in a series of articles providing background information on the system of government and administration in Norfolk Island, including who can vote, who can stand for election, how the voting system works and how the resulting Government is normally formed. This week’s information concerns eligibility to stand for election and how to nominate. Electoral provisions for the Legislative Assembly are contained in the Norfolk Island Act 1979 (Cth) and the Legislative Assembly Act 1979 (NI). Under current law, a person can stand for election to the Assembly if they are an Australian citizen aged 18 or over, are entitled to vote at elections, and have been ordinarily resident in Norfolk Island for a period of five years immediately preceding their nomination. In accordance with the legislation, nomination day for this year’s election is Wednesday 17 February 2010. The law requires that the nomination of a candidate for election to the Legislative Assembly be effected by delivering to the Returning Officer, not later than noon on nomination day, a prescribed nomination form signed by the candidate and by at least two electors. Prescribed nomination forms are available from the Returning Officer at the Immigration Office in Customs House, Burnt Pine. In short, if you wish to stand for election, you have just over two weeks to lodge your nomination.
