A message from
the Mayor
Dear Neighbors,
In the immortal words of William
Shakespeare, “Action is eloquence”.
Therefore, whatever action we take speaks
directly to our eloquence—or lack thereof—
and our ability to convey our message,
objectives, goals and vision.
As the City of Geneva marches toward
a new fiscal year, confident in its ability to
provide the services we have all come to
expect, appreciate and value, I for one will
heed Mr. Shakespeare’s words and take action to address the challenges and embrace
the opportunities that come Geneva’s way. I will take measure in my words and
deeds to ensure that such action reflects the character of our community and serves
the best interests of our residents, businesses and guests.
I invite you to join me in speaking eloquently about what matters most to you
and take action to see it gets done. Work alongside me, your Aldermen, the City’s
professional staff and your neighbors and participate in shaping your beloved
hometown.
Imagine the City of Geneva as a community pool. There are those who dive right
in regardless of the temperature of the water. Others gingerly dip their toes so they
know what they’re about to experience. Others still take advantage of the zero-depth
design and slowly walk themselves into the water until the water is finally shoulder
high. And, lastly, there are those who simply sit on the pool deck and watch everyone
else.
The City of Geneva effectively displays an “Open Swim” sign and cordially invites
everyone and anyone to enter the pool and enjoy the water. Don’t just sit on the pool
deck.
My best,
Kevin Burns
Mayor
Good Neighbor
Kayleigh
Barnaba
has a good
cause
by Peggy Capper
K
ayleigh Barnaba claims she
is just a typical thirteen
year-old girl who enjoys
tennis, golf and soccer. After
speaking with this remarkable
Geneva youth, however, one will
discover that Kayleigh Barnaba is
anything but ordinary and has been
making extraordinary efforts to
raise money for a cause that is close
to her heart, Parkinson’s Disease
research.
Kayleigh, a seventh grader at
St. Peter Catholic School, has
understood the importance of
giving to others from a very young
age. In lieu of gifts at her birthday
and Christmas parties, Kayleigh
began asking her friends to donate
money to charitable causes. “It all
started when I was 7 or 8 years
old when I had my first Christmas
party,” explains Kayleigh. “Instead of
asking for gifts, I asked my friends to
donate to specific charities like the
library for school and then one year
for the soldiers.” After doing this
for several years, she met Paul Ruby
and everything changed. “One year
I met Mr. Paul Ruby and I found
out that he had Parkinson’s disease.
I felt bad for him and I wanted to
do something about it. So I started
asking people to donate to that
charity,” she says.
Paul Ruby, the general manager
at The Herrington in Geneva,
was diagnosed with early-onset
Parkinson’s Disease in 2006 and
created the Paul Ruby Foundation
for Parkinson’s Research to battle
the illness. Paul says Kayleigh
has been a huge help to his
organization. “She is an inspiration
to me,” he says. “She is one of the
most giving young ladies I’ve ever
met.” Since meeting Paul, Kayleigh
has helped raise thousands of dollars
for Parkinson’s research by hosting
Christmas, birthday and pool parties
in Paul Ruby’s honor.
In addition, she has worked with
her school, St. Peter, to raise money
for the cause. She recently asked
to have proceeds generated from a
Daddy Daughter Dance to be given
to the Paul Ruby Foundation. She
also has been working with her
school to allocate their “Dress Down
Dollar Day” money to Parkinson’s
research. Roseann Feldman, the
principal at St. Peter Catholic
School, agrees that Kayleigh is a
remarkable person. “She ventures in
and tries new things and succeeds in
whatever she does,” says Roseann.
“She is an active, deserving young
lady that cares about people.” Ever
humble, Kayleigh credits others with
her success. “I don’t do this on my
own,” says Kayleigh. “My friends
help me, my parents help me. I’ve
had a lot of help in this.”
This spring, Kayleigh plans on
expanding her fundraising efforts
by targeting businesses and schools
in the Geneva area to help raise
money. Kayleigh hopes that others
will learn that a group effort really
can make a difference. “I hope that
when you donate to a cause you can
see how much effort and teamwork
that people put in it. It’s all about
the community,” says Kayleigh.
She hopes to continue fund-raising
for the Paul Ruby Foundation well
into the future. “When I get older
I will definitely keep doing this,”
says Kayleigh. “I’ll keep going until
they find a cure,” vows Kayleigh.
One thing is for certain, if Kayleigh
Barnaba is a “typical” teenager then
this world will definitely be a better
place in the future.

Where to go to get
WET in Geneva
Pool and Splash Parks…
Summer is here and Geneva is bursting with ways to
cool off and beat the heat. From the Fox River to the
Sunset Pool, Geneva residents have no excuse not to
get outdoors and splash into summer…
10
Geneva Park District boasts one
of the best pools in the tri-cities
area and Sunset Pool officially
opens for summer on May 28. The
pool has lots of features to keep
everyone cool from its five water
slides (including two drop slides,
one tube slide and two body slides)
to its kid-friendly zero-depth areas
there is something for everyone
at Sunset Pool. Little ones can
enjoy the interactive water castle
and water-play area complete with
bubblers and spray jets and the large
pirate-themed sand area. The pool
is also heated for comfort. When it’s
time for a water break, visitors can
play in the sand area or challenge
friends to a game of sand volleyball.
There is even a sun hill for relaxing
and tanning.
Sunset Pool provides so much
more than just swimming. The
Park District strives to create
fun and interesting activities for
families throughout the summer.
Traci Wicks, Marketing and Public
Relations Supervisor for the Geneva
Park District, explains, “We try to
make Sunset Pool a destination
for people because it’s affordable
and so close.” They offer a variety
of free and low cost activities for
residents for younger children, teens
and adults. Younger children will
enjoy Flick ‘n Float movie nights.
This unique experience lets children
enjoy their favorite film while
floating in the pool. There are three
movie nights offered throughout
the summer (one in each month)
and they provide a great form of
inexpensive family entertainment.
The first Flick ‘n Float movie night
kicks off on June 17 and will
feature Disney’s The Princess and
the Frog. Older kids can enjoy the
pool’s Teen Nights throughout the
summer season as well. Teen Nights
include a variety of activities like
hula hoop and limbo contests. The
Park District is also concerned about
safety and they have partnered with
Delnor to present a Sun Safety Day
on June 10. The event will teach
residents tips on the proper way to
protect oneself from the sun during
the summer months.
New this summer is a
Midsummer Poolside Luau on
Friday, July 15 from 6–9pm. Sunset
Pool will be transformed into a
tropical paradise complete with
decorations, activities, food, bands,
entertainment and more. The
tropical party will feature special
luau fare from Salt Creek BBQ and
icy treats from Dairy Queen. The

and a fire thrower. “It’s going to be a
fun family event bringing Hawaii to
Geneva at a very affordable price,”
says Traci.
Pool hours are 4–7pm on days
when Geneva Schools are in session
and 12:30–8pm when normal
summer hours commence. Residents
should consider purchasing a season
pass as they will receive priority
hours and be allowed to enter the
pool at 12pm. The pool is available
for birthday parties, after-hours
rental and group day outing rates
are available. There are special
hours for Memorial Day, July Fourth
and swim meets, so residents should

check genevaparks.org for complete
pool information.
Geneva is also lucky to have its
very own Spray Ground splash
park located on the east side of
town. The Spray Ground is full of
interactive fountains, water cannons,
bubblers and arches that spray. “It’s
a free opportunity to cool off in the
summer,” says Traci. Kids, especially
toddlers, can enjoy a wild, watery
adventure close to home. Parents
are encouraged to bring their
cameras to capture the summer
fun and comfortable benches are
provided for adults to relax while
their children stay cool. The Spray
Ground opens June 4 and will
remain open through September 5.
It is located at Moore Park on the
northeast corner of Eastside Drive
and Geneva Drive. Hours are
Monday through Thursday
10am–7pm and Friday through
Sunday 10am–6pm.
One of Geneva’s most unique
assets is the majestic Fox River.
From small paddle boat rentals to
large paddlewheel boat cruises,
there are a myriad of ways, both wet
and dry, to enjoy all that the Fox
River has to offer.
One way to kick off summer is
by participating in the 2011 MidAmerican Canoe and Kayak Race.
The event takes place on June 5
along the Fox River and offers two
points of entry to cater to all levels
of expertise. The first is a 10-mile
race that starts in St. Charles and
the second is a 6-mile race that
begins in Batavia. Both races will
finish at McCullough Park in Aurora
with a post-race party and awards
ceremony.
This marks the 50-year
anniversary of the race and all
preregistered paddlers will receive
a commemorative keepsake. Scout
groups, church organizations,
paddling clubs, school teams, and
business groups are all encouraged
to attend. Those who register as
a group can add to the fun by
being placed in an exclusive heat.
Multiple groups are welcome too
with ten boats per heat going off
every four minutes. There is even a
complimentary shuttle service at the
event that will take participants back
to their car. Paddlers can drop their
boat at the start area, park at the
finish line and enjoy the post-race
party! For more information, visit
foxvalleyparkdistrict.org.
For those looking for a more
leisurely approach to the Fox
River, there are several watercraft
options available. Small paddle
boats are available for rent through
the Batavia Park District and large
paddlewheel riverboat cruises
are available just upstream in
St. Charles. The Batavia Park District
operates 30-minute paddle boat
rentals from Memorial Day weekend
through Labor Day weekend on
Batavia’s Riverwalk. Allison Niemela
of the Batavia Park District feels the

paddle boats are a great way to enjoy
the water close to home. “Why spend
oodles of money at the Wisconsin
Dells when you can create your own
staycation in the Tri-Cities for half the
price and less hassle?” says Allison.
Hours of operation are from 2–8pm
seven days a week with extended
hours on special event days, such as
Windmill City Festival (July 9–11).
The rental rate is $10 per half hour,
per boat. Party rental opportunities
are available.
If just paddling is too relaxed, have
the ultimate water battle at Batavia’s
Funway. The bumper boats are
armed with squirt guns or challenge
friends to a water war with the water
balloon slingshot game. Funway’s
five acre complex on South River
Street has a full slate of activities,
both indoor and outdoor, to keep
the whole family entertained. Visit
funway.com for more information.
Just a splash away, large
paddlewheel riverboat cruises are
available at Pottawattamie Park in
St. Charles. Passengers can cruise
the scenic Fox River and enjoy
travel from the era of Mark Twain
on one of the daily afternoon
sightseeing trips. The charter cruises
can accommodate group outings of
up to 100 guests for both luncheon
and dinner group voyages. For more
information, visit stcriverboats.com.
Just along the Fox River is a unique
beach-like experience exclusive to the
tri-cities area. The Hall Quarry Beach
in Batavia offers a sandy experience
without the hassle of travel. The
Quarry occupies a former stone
quarry owned by the Batavia Park
District. It features a sand bottom
swimming area covering 60,000
square feet that includes islands,
slides, and a diving area. There is
also a playground area and plenty of
picnic tables for eating. The Quarry
offers water fitness programs, public
swims, lap swimming and swimming
lessons as well. Non-Batavia residents
are welcome to visit the pool by
paying a daily fee or by purchasing
a pass. The facility is also available
for birthday party, family reunions
and company party rentals. The Hall
Quarry Beach is located at 400 S.
Water Street in Batavia. For more
information visit bataviaparks.org.
Geneva residents are lucky to have
such unique and active ways to enjoy
all that summer has to offer. From
rolling on the river to chilling at the
pool, Geneva is ready to splash into
summer.
Splash at Swedish Days
While cooling off this summer,
Genevans should not forget to
splash into Swedish Days. The
festival offers a way for visitors
to beat the heat. Kids who enjoy
getting wet will delight in the Fire
Hose Challenge on Kid’s Day, June
24. This favorite event is a contest
in which teams try to push a large
ball across the opponent’s goal by
squirting it with a stream of water.
If that does not cool the little ones
down enough, they can romp in
a fine mist of water from the fire
department’s snorkel truck. Both
events are coordinated by Geneva
Fire Department and are sure to
make a splash at Swedish Days. See
pages 24 and 32 for an overview of
Swedish Days activities.

Calling 811 prevents
utility disruption
811 is the national number
designated by the Federal
Communications Commission
to help protect homeowners
and professional excavators from
unintentionally hitting underground
utility lines while working on
digging projects—large and small.
Every digging project requires a
call to 811. Hitting an underground
utility line while digging can harm
the environment, cause serious
personal injuries, disrupt service
to an entire neighborhood, and

costs. Nationwide, approximately
170,000 underground utilities are
damaged each year by digging. One
out of every three incidents could
have been prevented by calling 811
prior to digging.
The following are just a few of the
class covers the type of CPR used by
medical professionals. Usually this
course is required by an employer
and includes fire department
employees, police dispatchers,
nurses and doctors. Health Care

scenarios in which a homeowner
should call 811: putting in a fence,
planting trees or shrubbery, building
a patio or deck, and excavating a

Providing much-needed help to families or individuals in crisis is one of the
most generous, selfless gestures one can offer to people in their community. In
2010, volunteers from the Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA)
responded to 12 events in Geneva ranging from traffic control for public events,
severe weather watches, complex traffic accidents, and structure fires. “Our
volunteers are on the front lines of the services provided to the residents and
visitors of Geneva by assisting our police and fire departments as well as local
community groups. Volunteers are the lifeblood of ESDA,” stated Mayor Kevin
Burns. “ESDA is an integral part of our emergency response protocol. The
volunteers are vital to our ability to assist the public during emergencies,” said
Chief of Police Steve Mexin. “We presently have about six active volunteers in
Geneva. If we can recruit more from Geneva and the surrounding communities,
we will improve response time and efficiency,” stated Fire Chief Steve Olson.
Those interested in learning more about the organization and how they can
contribute should contact Fire Chief Steve Olson at 630-232-2530.

Geneva Chamber of Commerce
What feeds you
feeds Geneva charities
The festival season is about to begin with Swedish
Days leading the way June 21–26. This 62 year old
event is steeped in tradition and community. When the
creators planned this week long event they had several
goals. One of course was to promote the shops and
restaurants by bringing residents and visitors to Geneva.
Even then the economy needed a boost. The plan also
involved a way to help charities and this is one of the
more unique features of our festival.
When you visit the festival and see the food booths
dotted about the town on almost every corner you are
simply thinking about what you’d like to eat. However
when you buy food at one of these booths you are
doing more than feeding yourself. You are contributing
to one of many charitable causes that each booth
represents. This means charities will benefit from the
dollars raised and the money is used here at home.
For many of the organizations this is their largest
fundraiser. Their volunteers man that booth ten hours
a day, many even taking vacation days to work and
support their cause. Another plus is that many teens
are hired to help in the booths. This is community at its
best.
For the festival this insures a local “flavor” and the
commitment to quality is good. These groups operate
their booths every year and invest in equipment and
materials to present a clean operation and good value.
The charities support everything from Lazarus House,
Hospice, schools, churches, sports groups, animal care,
eyeglasses and programs for the blind, Tri City Family
Services, support of our troops and many more. When
you are looking for a place to eat look for the sign that
says “GENEVA CHARITY” which confirms this is a notfor-profit booth serving a good cause and endorsed by
the Chamber of Commerce.
Please visit our website for a complete schedule of
events for June 21–26. Many of your neighbors and
friends will be volunteering at the booths- come and
enjoy the festival.

t wouldn’t be summer in Geneva without the
“Granddaddy of Illinois Festivals,” Geneva Chamber
of Commerce’s 62nd Annual Swedish Days—A
Midsommar Festival. June 21 kicks off this six day
festival that continues through June 26.
“Swedish Days is a fest that is a summer classic. New
events will add a fresh spin to some of Swedish Days’
traditions. The volunteers, the parade participants and
the food vendors come back each year to create six days
of fun. We thank everyone involved for helping make
Swedish Days, our hometown festival, an event we can
be proud of,” says Jean Gaines, president of the Geneva
Chamber of Commerce.
Kick off this year’s celebration with the Craft Show.
Crafters from Illinois and neighboring states unveil their
handmade items at 10am, Tuesday on Hamilton Street.
Geneva merchants, restaurants and eateries also open
their doors to visitors and offer a full day and week of
specials. The evening partying begins at 7:30pm when
Liverpool, “The Ultimate Musical Tribute to the Beatles,”
takes Central Stage. Free musical entertainment will
be offered Tuesday—Saturday at the stage throughout
Swedish Days. Each day the music scene changes in
downtown Geneva. Bring a chair or lawn blanket and
enjoy an unforgettable six days of music!
Shopping downtown during the festival will be
“cutting-edge” this year. Windows will be filled with
QR Codes, a symbol that is read by the camera on
a Smartphone and directs the device to a specific
destination coordinated with the code. What surprises
will you find when you scan the codes?
All week kids can create masterpieces and participate
in activities designed just for them, culminating with a
day dedicated to all things kids, Kids’ Day on Friday,
where you will be able to get your game on in a Video
Game Tournament. Old favorites like the carnival, 3-on3 basketball tournament, and fire hose challenge are in
the lineup, along with the annual Swedish Days Parade.
We invite you to experience the Swedish Days
Invitational Car Show. This spectacular event will take
place Saturday and Sunday on Campbell and Third
Streets. Car enthusiasts can stroll and enjoy classic cars
set amidst the excitement of Swedish Days.
Complete listing of events will be available mid-May.
Brochures can be picked up in businesses throughout
downtown and the Geneva Commons. Also, visit

he Geneva History Center
Archives has a real photo
postcard showing probably the
very earliest “swimming pool” in
Geneva (ca 1920s). It was the mill
race on the Fox River in Geneva
which was located on the east side
of the river just north of the State
Street Bridge. At this location, there
was a diving board and a slide but
perhaps very little supervision.
Children developed infections as the
water contained raw sewage from
communities upriver from Geneva.
Children would often hitchhike or
take the streetcar to Batavia or St.
Charles to swim in their community
pools.
In May 1945 there was an effort
by the City of Geneva Playground
and Recreational Board to build a
Geneva Community Swimming
Pool which would be dedicated
38
to the Geneva men and women
serving the country during WWII.
For some reason, the project was
tabled. Research indicates that this
may be due to the fact that there
was a large epidemic of polio in
the United States immediately after
WWII. People were advised to
‘stay out of the water.’ The height
of this epidemic was in 1952.
The first polio vaccine, developed
by Dr. Jonas Salk, only became
available in 1955.
In 1955, Burgess-Norton Mfg.
Company offered to donate its
recreation center and property
at the corner of South Street and
Western Avenue for the dual
purpose of a youth recreation center
and a swimming pool. In 1956, a
fund drive began in early March
with a goal of $125,000. By the end
of the month $135,000 had
been pledged from private donors.
Ground was broken in April. The
Geneva Memorial Community
Center Pool became a reality.
The current Geneva swimming
pool is the Geneva Park District
Sunset Pool located at Sunset Park,
710 Western Avenue. A $3.51
million pool project referendum was
passed in April 1995. Construction
began in September 1995. The new,
modern Sunset Pool was dedicated
June 15, 1996.
The public is invited to visit
the Geneva History Center to
view In Other Words: A History of
Communication in Geneva along
with its companion exhibition Every
Story Counts: Everyday Stories From
Everyday Genevans. Both exhibitions
close June 25.
