From the Driver’s Seat
Hi everyone,
Another month, another ~$125 for the newsletter. We had a
special SAACNW budget committee meeting at Ken Walker’s
house. Basically, our club dues are not supporting the club’s
needs and activities. Expect a raise in dues for 2006, too late to
raise the dues this year. We need to figure out how to cut the
costs. One great method that I support is being able to download the newsletter from the SAACNW.org website--password
protected of course. If we can get 50% of our membership to
accept it this way, we cut 50% of our printing costs. Do you
really need that paper copy? Ask yourself that question. I
know there are those of you that don’t have internet access or
would just rather get the paper version, but for those of you
that can/would accept it electronically it would help the club
make ends meet.
Thanks to Ken Walker for hosting the 2005 calendar planning
meeting and special budget committee meeting at his house.
We were distracted by Shelby’s being auctioned at the BarrettJackson car auction. I averaged out the prices of the 1967 GT500’s for this year, and the average price was $164,000. Unbelievable! Get some better insurance everyone, the Shelby
values continue to skyrocket.

Negative Wedge Kit - Tech Article
Early 64 _ to ’73 mustang handling has never been considered “refined”, in fact
you could call it “spooky”. Even if your just going to the market. The ford factory boys
purposely set up these front suspensions to understeer or “plow” in most all driving
situations. Their reasoning was that not all mustang owners were expected to be
experienced race drivers. This understeer condition is created by an intentional
geometry configuration that causes positive camber gain with body roll on the outer
wheel, and negative camber gain on the inner side. Stay with me, it gets better.
‘Ol Shelby knew this problem and lowered the front control arms one inch. (1-_
inches on his Trans Am cars) This modification improved the handling greatly but put
the ball joints in a near “bind” condition causing premature wear. Ideally a 1 _ to 2
inch drop on the front A arms is needed; however, that would cause the ball joint to
bind on every bump and corner and suspension would fail completely.
The solution to this ball joint binding is to place a wedge spacer between the
stock control arm and ball joint, this idea has been around for some time and I believe
that Pro-motor sports engineering was first to design and build a kit that let us safely
lower these cars. These kits are called a “negative wedge camber corrector kit”. The
kit includes two billet 6061 aluminum wedge spacers grade-eight nuts and bolts, drill
templates and complete instructions. Modified moog ball joints are available with the
kit or without, many customers already have new or like new ball joints, so all that is
needed is to enlarge the existing 5/16 holes to 3/8 inch.
Three bolt and four bolt kits are available to fit 1964 _ to 1970 mustangs as well
as ’67-’70 Cougars and most Falcons, Comets and Mavericks from those years.
Re-alignment settings are very close to stock and will provide excellent tire wear. Tire
contact patch is close to 100% at all times. I recommend changing out the front sway
bar if it is anything less than 7/8 inch in diameter and be sure the suspension bushings
are in good condition. For all you economy minded gear heads a 15/16 inch V8
Granada bar in junkyard land will bolt directly to your ’67-73 mustang.
Front springs are another item that should not be over looked for optimum
handling, the stock springs will work fine, but I would consider using a high rate spring
such as a ’69-70 big block. Very common are a 620 rated spring, some say there are
a little stiff. I have installed a set of variable rate springs 320-550 in lbs on my car; I
will let you know the results when my car is back on the road. If you have a previously
lowered A arm (1 inch) this kit will work just fine.

President’s Column - by Dave Lennartz
“Ownership Is Not Essential, Enthusiasm Is”
At a club meeting last year, I got up on my personal soap box and shared my concerns about
our decreasing membership—both in total numbers, and in terms of ACTIVE, participating
members—and the distressing possibility it raised in my mind of SAAC NW declining into
*just* an “occasional beer, pizza & bench-racing” society—not that there’s anything wrong
with “occasional beer, pizza & bench-racing”; it’s the *just* that really concerns me.
Now that you all have given me the “presidential” soapbox, and I’ve talked with a few prior or
inactive members, I’d like to revisit that issue, and do it in terms of the statement at the head
of this column. To me, it’s an enthusiasm for Shelby cars, and what they accomplished on the
track and on the streets, that draws most folks to this club initially; BUT, we stay involved
because we enjoy the people, and the activities, that we find here; and if, it stops being FUN—
being enjoyable—folks lose that initial enthusiasm and LEAVE.
The primary reason I’ve gleaned from conversations with folks who’ve left SAAC NW is their
impression that we’re becoming snobbish or exclusionary, based on ownership of “pedigree”
cars, rather than inclusionary based on enthusiasm about those cars—and about Ford-powered
performance in a larger sense.
IF SAAC NW is going to survive as a club, it needs every enthusiastic member it can find.
Those of us who are here need to explicitly let those enthusiasts know they’re welcome, and
we need to make our club activities, from mundane monthly meetings to once-a-year (or oncein-a-lifetime) events, enjoyable for everyone who’s enthusiastic about Shelbys.
The ONLY reasons I can see for excluding someone from SAAC NW membership are (1)
dishonest behavior and (2)especially the specific dishonesty of deliberately misleading the
public by misrepresenting a car (or parts, or anything else marque-related) as being “pedigree”
when they know it’s not. Personality clashes and conflicts aren’t enough; those will either sort
themselves out, or the person(s) unwilling to compromise will leave on their own—it’s up to
them.
8
Radical front-end alignment settings are eliminated since large amounts of
preset negative camber are not needed; also the need for a rear sway bar is reduced or
eliminated.
Installation is very straightforward; basic hand tools and you will need a spring
compressor, remember; handle the compressed spring with caution since it is under
tremendous load pressure.
So, with improved camber geometry and a lowered ride height you can make
these old steeds handle as good as new ones.
