SYMBOLIC ARTISTRY OF JOHN MITCHELL
— A rich exchange of ideas and the
retelling of history characterize the
shotgun houses created by artist John
Mitchell. The Mitchell fascination with
the symbolism, symmetry and cultural
significance of the unique architecture
of the shotgun house began with
research Into the history of the
Africans of the Ivory Coast.
The shotgun houses of John Mitchell tell
stories about the homes and about the
physical, cultural and spiritual lives of
many of the people who lived in such
dwellings.
Mitchell, who earned a master's degree
from Savannah College of Art and
Design and is now a part-time profes
sor there, will exhibit examples of his
houses with titles such as "Collage of
Memories," "Middle Passage" and
"House Icons Times Seven." There will
also be a selection of Mitchell paintings, which show the strong imprt
matur of music and dance and time
spent pointing in the Bahamas.
