2013 solid waste guide
We are pleased to provide residents with a new updated and more comprehensive version
of our annual guide.
The guide will provide information about the Conservation Center, Curbside Recycling,
Hazardous Waste disposal and Bulky Waste disposal. Please retain this information which
also includes your new 2013 Recycling Schedule.
Conservation Center
The Cranford Conservation Center, located at 210 Birchwood Avenue, can be used by
residents to recycle yard waste, brush, glass, aluminum, electronics, steel, plastic and
paper. The Center also accepts used motor oil and oil filters. However, while you do need
to purchase a Yard Waste Permit to drop off certain home generated yard debris, there are
numerous recyclables that can be brought to the Center that do not require a permit.
See the Recycling Guide on the following pages for more information on what can and
cannot be recycled at the Conservation Center, and the methods to do so. Also, please note
the Center’s hours of operation since the days and hours change depending on the season.
How To Obtain a Yard Waste Permit
Residents can purchase a permit in one of three ways: at the
Center, through the mail or by visiting the Cranford Health
Department, 8 Springfield Avenue.
Yard Material Accepted (with permit)
•Yard and garden clippings
Please be aware that the 2012 permit is valid until
April 9, 2013.
•Grass clippings, leaves, “Gum Balls”
A 2013 permit will be valid until April 10, 2014.
•Tree parts and stumps (max. 24” long)
To apply through the mail:
•You must fill out the application on page 13 of this
magazine
•Enclose a check for $75 made out to the Township
of Cranford.
•Send to: Cranford Twp. Conservation Center
8 Springfield Ave.
Cranford, NJ 07016
Please Note: Only one permit will be sent through the mail
per household. To obtain a second permit for another vehicle
in your household, you must wait until April 25th and come
in person to the Conservation Center. There is a limit of two
permit stickers per household for the $75 fee.
•Hedges & shrubs (do not need bundling)
•Firewood (max. 24” long, max. 2 feet in diameter)
Leaves
Leaves can be brought to the Center all year long without a
permit. However, the Township DPW also has a leaf collection
program. Look for more information in the September issue of
the Township News which is mailed in September.
Christmas Trees
Remember, you cannot put your tree to the curb. You can drop
it off at the Center without a permit. Make sure there are no
bags, ornaments or tinsel, please! Trees will be chipped for
ground cover.
Yard Material Not Accepted
•Broken concrete, stones, bricks, dirt
You must have a permit sticker affixed to the driver’s side back
window in order to deposit yard debris at the Center. Buying
a new car? Be sure to remove the permit sticker from your old
vehicle and bring it to the Conservation Center so we can issue
you a new one at no charge.

Questions & Answers
Q. Where do I dispose of hazardous waste
products like pesticides, pool chemicals
and antifreeze?
A. Several times a year the county holds collection
events specifically for hazardous waste disposal. You
can visit their website at: www.ucnj.org or call them at
(908) 654-9889 for more information.
Q. Does the Township provide for residential
garbage service?
A. The Township does not provide residential garbage
service. Residents must contract privately for this service.
See the list under Important Contact Information for a
list of haulers.
Q. How do I dispose of latex paint?
A. If there is liquid paint in the can and you can’t use
it up, remove the lid and let the paint air dry, or add
absorbent material like kitty liter or speedy dry to
hasten the drying process. When solidified put
the can in a plastic bag and dispose of it with your
regular garbage.

disposed of with my regular household garbage?
These items can be recycled locally
all year long:
A. For removal of old appliances, furniture, renovation

three options:
At Conservation Center

items.
