Jim Eyre: Gardens by the Bay –
How to Make a Hothouse Cool

Lecture Hall
Gardens by the Bay is a highly unusual
project set on reclaimed land in front of
Singapore’s city centre. The architects
of Wilkinson Eyre designed two large
glass conservatories on the waterfront
of the new garden. Jim Eyre, one of
the studio’s directors, will talk about
the evolution of this project and its
relationship with society and nature.
Jim Eyre has been a director
of Wilkinson Eyre Architects since
1987. He has generated numerous
competition-winning designs, such as
the acclaimed Gateshead Millennium
Bridge, which won the RIBA Stirling
Prize in 2002. He was Honorary
Treasurer of the Architectural
Association from 2005–07, having
been a council member since 2003
and President from 2007–09.
He is now Chair of the Architectural
Association Foundation and a Trustee
of Design Council CABE.

Matt Shaw and Will Trossell of Londonbased ScanLAB Projects will discuss
a series of recent projects involving
designers, architects and scientists
from across the globe. In this lecture,
ScanLAB critically analyse what
it means to see the world through
the eyes of large-scale terrestrial laser
scanning technology and speculate
on its use as a design tool of the future.

During 1980–1990s, German-Swiss
architecture gained worldwide acclaim
on account of its constructional and
aesthetic coherence. The production
purported an ethical orientation,
seeking a sense of stability in reaction to
postmodern relativism. Irina Davidovici
discusses the cultural and theoretical
conditions of this architecture as facets
of one artistic and cultural phenomenon,
illustrating the main themes with indepth case studies and topical essays.
Irina Davidovici is an architect and
academic based in London and Zurich.
She worked in London for Caruso
St John and Herzog & de Meuron
before completing her doctorate in the
history and philosophy of architecture
at the University of Cambridge. She
is currently senior lecturer in the history
and theory of architecture at Kingston
University in London.

photographs and films. Recent solo
shows include Century Rolls (Tate
Liverpool), the Renaissance Society
(Chicago), Marian Goodman Gallery
(Paris) and Blum & Poe (LA). Group
exhibitions at the 2011 Sharjah Biennial,
San Francisco MoMA, Deutsche
Guggenheim and Frith Street Gallery.
Saunders is also active as a writer. He
currently teaches at Harvard University.
