Workshop Energetic Still-‐Life Painting & How to Market Your Art by Qiang Huang November 4 -‐ 6, 2015, 10AM -‐ 5:30PM Fort Smith Regional Art Museum 1601 Rogers Avenue Fort Smith, AR 72901 $375 RAM members/$400 non-‐members Description Qiang's approaches to still-‐life painting will be demonstrated with particular focus on composing dramatic setups by observing the light distribution, and using bold and loose strokes to create a powerful and accurate representation on canvas. Using demonstrations, presentation, and individual assistance, Qiang will explain his process of creating energetic paintings by manipulating values, colors, edges, and brushwork. Personal attention will be given to each student according to his/her currently skill level and personal goals in art. The workshop is designed for indoor practice with live settings. Qiang will also share his experience marketing art using the internet. He will demonstrate how to advertise artwork using blogs, websites, email newsletters, and on-‐line galleries. In addition, Qiang will also explain his way of using eBay to conduct on-‐line sales. Giang will discuss his daily painting practice as a self-‐discipline and an effective way of communicating. Bristle Brushes: #10 Flat, #10 Bright, #6 Bright, #4 Flat, #2 Flat. Huang uses Signet or Winsor & Newton. •
Sable or Synthetic Brushes: ¾” Flat, #10 Filbert, 10/0 Round. Huang uses Robert Simmons. •
Palette knife: T30 •
Paints: Naples Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red Light, Venetian Red, Alizarin Crimson, Permanent Rose, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Phthalo Blue, and Titanium White. I like Rembrandt oil colors, but other brands are fine too. I use Winton as well. •
Medium: Linsead oil. Odorless turpenoid or mineral spirit for cleaning brushes. •
Palette: Glass on brown paper, or word board palette. Do not use white paper palette. Canvas: Primed and stretched canvas preferred, but you may use panels from RayMar, or loose canvas. Choose the size you feel comfortable with, but do not go beyond 12” x 16”. Do not use paper backed canvas panels. They are too absorptive. •

Lights: To get better illumination for your canvas and palette, you may bring a light on a stand. If you do not have a light, you may bring a camera tripod, and I will provide you clip light. The museum will be on your right. About Qiang Huang •
Qiang Huang (pronounced Chong Wong) was born and raised in Beijing, China and now lives at Austin, Texas. His interest in art was developed when he was very young, and influenced strongly by his uncle, Hong-‐En Huang, a professional painter and art educator. For various reasons, he did not get an opportunity to study art in any professional art institutions. He studied science and technology instead. He moved to America in 1985, obtained a Ph.D. in physics in 1993, and began a career in optical engineering. However, he has been active in local art communities. To further develop his artistic skills he has attended classes and workshops. He has studied from well-‐known artists such as David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Scott Burdick, Jean Chambers, and Miles Mathis. His paintings show remarkable accuracy and expressive brush strokes Qiang has been a member of the Oil Painters of America since 2004. His paintings have been selected for the 14th, 15th, and 16th OPA National Juried Exhibitions. Qiang’s works are represented by InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg, Texas.
