Academic Year 2012‐2013 Workshop teacher: Professor Rossana Bonadei, Elena Viani Workshop supervisor: Professor Rossana Bonadei Visiting experts: A visiting expert will be involved Timing: 2nd term Main target: Students enrolled in Planning and Management of Tourism Systems (PMTS) Maximum number of attendees: 15 Prerequisites: spoken and written English, ITT tools, excel Content and tasks: Cultural events and itineraries are useful tools to test both research methodologies and planning activities. The present workshop is devoted to the planning and management of tourism services and of the infrastructures related to the design of a cultural itinerary. Bergamo and its surroundings will be the context of the workshop activities. Students will be confronted with a town rich in cultural events and in tourist potentialities, and with a tourist market characterised by an increasing demand of “new visit experiences” (B.J Pine II e J. H. Gilmore, L’economia dell’esperienza. ETAS, 2000) especially connected with individual and collective subjects promoting eco‐sustainable values. The students will be confronted with information and figures about: • Economic and Social Groups involved in activities related to the Bergamo Solidale project promoted by Cittadinanza Sostenibile Network (Are they interested in tourism itineraries? Do they offer products and services that might meet the demand of “new visit experiences”?) • Cultural and natural attractions in Bergamo and its surroundings‐ material and immaterial‐ possibly incorporated in activities related to Bergamo Solidale • The Market demand (Is there a market for new itineraries designed to connect these local attractions with the social capital implied by Bergamo Solidale‐ Cittadinanza Sostenibile? Are there local competences to enact and interpret ne experiences and new itineraries?) The results of the analysis will help the students to map the present local reality testing actors and operators involved in the present local eco‐sustainable tourist market, and will allow them to identify some points of interest for potential new eco‐sustainable itineraries. The workshop will on one side familiarize students with a number of standard specific research methods in the field of tourism analysis (such as criteria assessment, work planning, sources identification and data collections, results presentation, ecc.). On the other side, students will be required to: − Prepare questionnaires and/or tables for interviews directed to local cultural planners and operators working in eco‐sustainable tourism activities − Assess data for formal presentations − Make proposals for the design of new local eco‐sustainable itineraries Organization: The workshop is 30 hours in length, and is held in English. Theoretical support will be provided through relevant literature and ad‐hoc selected papers (papers provided by the teacher, institutional papers, web files). Practical sessions will be introduced by theoretical presentations. An expert and a tutor will cooperate in order to strengthen the competences related to case‐studies and practical activities, and monitor the tasks and the methodology that every working group will independently develop under the teacher’s guide. Three working groups will be organised, thanks to participatory techniques. Students will be divided into three groups, that will be asked to work at first independently and on specific tasks. Group 1‐ Mapping the social capital Activities: − drafting of ad hoc questionnaires − contacts with subjects involved with Bergamo Solidale − submission of questionnaires via web sessions − data analysis and presentation to the other groups Group 2‐ Mapping cultural attractions and events Activities: − drafting of data collection grids − on field work to map the points of interest scattered on the surrounding territory − outputs presentation to the other groups Group 3‐ Market demand analysis Activities; − contacts with local Tourist Guides associations − planning and organisation of a meeting with a group of selected tourist guides to test the collected data and information and prepare a feasibility plan to design one or more itineraries. Each group of attendees will be asked to produce a product and a presentation, in view of a final public meeting, which will be shared, discussed, evaluated, and published on the Web. Further information: Consistent with the tasks of the relevant degree (Planning and Management of Tourism Systems), the workshop aims at providing both theoretical and practical tools, as well as opportunities for joint work. The workshop will provide an approach on how to work on projects, and possibly be functional to the final dissertation.
