Message from Dr. Patricia Minnes, Acting
Chair, Clinical Program (July – December
2007)
all who helped with the preparation of the
application and to those who participated in
interviews with the site visitors.
Recently, we have been advertising for new
faculty who work in either child or adult Clinical
Psychology. We hope to complete interviews
in the near future and to be able to hire at
least one if not two new faculty in the new
year.
We hope that you enjoy this newsletter. We
welcome feedback and suggestions for future
issues. Please contact Patricia Minnes:
[email protected] or Wendy Craig:

Hello again. I’ve been filling in as Chair of the
Clinical Program this term while Wendy Craig is
on sabbatical. The past year has been a time
of transition for the Clinical Program with
several comings and goings. Last spring we
said farewell to Jane Leach who retired after
many years as Graduate Assistant and we said
hello to Dianne Flint who has taken over Jane’s
position. In July, we said farewell to Marjory
Phillips who has moved back to Toronto to take
up a position at the Integra Foundation and in
October we welcomed Kevin Parker as the new
Director of the Psychology Clinic. Jesselyn
Lennox, Psychology Clinic Secretary also left in
December. She has been replaced by Stacey
Burns. Finally, in August, Uzma Rehman left
the department to take up a faculty position in
the Psychology Department at Waterloo.
Jane Leach
Graduate Secretary Retired April 2007
Another major project in the past year was the
preparation of our application to CPA for reaccreditation of the Clinical Program. The site
visitors Dr. Jane Ledingham (University of
Ottawa), Dr. Carl von Baeyer (University of
Saskatchewan) and Dr. Judith Wiener (OISE)
came to the Department in May and in
November we received word that our
application was successful. Many thanks to
Wendy Craig, Chair Clinical Program

In June 2007, the Psychology Clinic concluded
its two-year pilot phase and we are pleased to
report that all objectives have been attained.
The Clinic has established itself as a vital
contributor to graduate clinical training, a well
respected resource to southeastern Ontario,
and a financially viable operation.

The Clinic has provided a link between
academic coursework and field placement by
providing students with opportunities to target
particular clinical training goals and to obtain
well supervised clinical practice. To date, 25 of
the 28 students who are active in the clinical
program (89.3% of students in the coursework
years of MA1 to PhD3) have volunteered to see
children/teens at the Clinic. In addition, the
Clinic has provided an important source for
child practicum placements (10 practicum
students in the last 2 years). Third, the Clinic
has also become an important component in
clinical teaching. For example, videotape clips
of Clinic clients were used weekly to illustrate
common diagnostic presentations for PSYC 809
(Child Clinical) and students from the Child
Assessment course (PSYC 806) and former
Interviewing course (PSYC 807) have been
invited to observe interviewing and child
assessments.

have received 322 referrals, have provided 157
comprehensive psychological assessments to
children and adolescents, and have seen 40
children for evidence-based psychological
treatment. We have established three service

Plans for 2007/2008 include continued
partnerships with the Clinical Psychology
Internship at Queen’s, Pathways for Children
and Youth, and our two research contracts, as
well as our growing reputation for excellence
within the general community. In addition,
through the Queen’s University

opportunities for interprofessional training with
the School of Rehab. Although the current
Director has resigned and will be relocating out

Tara Haley
Year: MA1
Supervisor: Dr. Dean Tripp
Research Interests:
My research interests are in the area of health
psychology. More specifically, I am interested
in psychosocial factors in acute and chronic
pain, as well as other illnesses. Currently, I am
studying the relationship between pain
catastrophizing and stress in response to acute
pain.
Clinical Interests/Training:
I have a variety of clinical interests including
working with children and adults with chronic
diseases as well as the treatment of mood and
anxiety disorders.
Corrie Goldfinger
Year: MA1
Supervisor: Dr. Caroline Pukall
Research Interests: My main research
interest is the interplay between physical and
mental health in women. Specifically I am
interested in investigating non-medical
treatment options, such as pelvic floor
physiotherapy and CBT, for women who have
genital pain (provoked vestibulodynia).
Clinical Interests/Training:
My clinical interests include adults with mood
and anxiety disorders and sex and marital
therapy. I am also interested in working with
women whose lives are being intimately
affected by health concerns such as breast
cancer and infertility.
Gelareh Karimiha
Year: MA1
Supervisor: Dr. Uzma Rehman
Research Interests:
My main interest lies within the area of marital
functioning/satisfaction. Specifically, I want to
find out more about the factors that distinguish
happy couples from distressed couples; the
role of marriage in times of stress, and the
bidirectional relationship between depression
and marital distress.
Clinical Interests/Training:
My clinical interests are quite broad but I am
mainly interested in marital and family therapy
as well as therapy for adults with mood
disorders.
- 18 -
Ravinder Sidhu
Year: MA1
Supervisor: Dr. Uzma Rehman
Research Interests:
In a broad sense: how cognitions can lead to
or prevent distress. More specifically, I have
been doing some work on mindfulness
meditation and examining its effects on anxiety
reduction. I have also been studying the
communication patterns and belief systems of
couples in marital distress, as well as
examining the effects of depression in an
interpersonal context.
Clinical Interests/Training:
I am interested in the treatment of a wide
variety of adult psychiatric disorders. This year
I was able to gain some experience in
facilitating a mindfulness-based stress
reduction treatment program (MBSR). In
addition to our in-class training on cognitive
assessment, I also received some training on
how to administer the SCID in order to
diagnose mood disorders.
Vicki Lopes
Year: MA1
Supervisor: Dr. Patricia Minnes
Research Interests:
My research interests are in the areas of
childhood
development
and
intellectual
disabilities.
For my thesis, I will be
investigating the experiences of pre-schooled
aged children and their families during the
child’s transition into elementary school.
Our lab (myself included) will be moving to
Waterloo in September 2007. Thank you to
everyone at Queen’s for making it such a
memorable first (and last) year here!
Clinical Interests/Training:
I am interested in the assessment of childhood
disorders, and in the implementation and
evaluation of early intervention programs for
children with intellectual disabilities.

Summary of Experiences: This year, I've
completed two major rotations in anxiety/
mood disorders and family/couples therapy.
I've also gained further experience with
personality, cognitive, and vocational
assessment, including on an inpatient unit.
The internship program has been very flexible
in accommodating my training goals and I've
grown significantly as a professional over the
year.

Internship Site: The Psychology Clinic at
Queen’s University, The Regional Assessment
and Resource Centre, and Queen’s University
Health, Counseling and Disability Services.
Summary of Experiences:
I am just finishing my Psychology Internship at
Queen’s University (Psychology Clinic, Regional
Assessment and Resource Centre, & Health
Counseling and Disability Services). What a
year it has been! I’ve had a chance to be
supervised by talented and terrific supervisors
and conducted assessment and therapy with
clients aged 1 to 25 with a whole variety of
issues and experiences. While on internship, I
applied for academic jobs and was thrilled to
accept an Assistant Professor position in the
Clinical Psychology: Applied Developmental
Emphasis program at the University of Guelph.
The moment I saw the add for this job, I knew
it would be a great fit for me. I will continue
therapy and assessment with children and their
families at the U of G Centre for Psychology
Services as part of my year of supervised
practice. After six years of living in Kingston,
we will be moving back closer to family and
friends. Thanks to my many mentors and
friends in the Clinical Program at Queen’s, I
will miss you.
Future Plans: I am currently applying for
Psychology positions in Calgary and am in the
process of obtaining provisional
registration through the Province of Alberta. I
defended my thesis in June 2007 and plan to
convocate this fall.
