You can assess your competencies before, during and after your work and life experiences. Want a

competency gap analysis, you’ll learn to:
•
•
•
Document your current competencies
Plan your future objectives
Identify your career planning action
How to complete the competency gap analysis
1. Review the definition of the competency you’d like to evaluate. You can find definitions of
the core competencies, program-specific competencies and professional competencies
through the competency kit at www.uvic.ca/coopandcareer/competencykit.
2. Use the worksheet on page 3 to assess your competency development for any competency
(make copies).
3. Use the scale to rate your level of competency development, and explain your rating in the
space provided. Here are the definitions for each level of competency development:
Beginning: You’ve started to find opportunities to develop this competency.
Developing: You’ve practiced this competency in the workplace, classroom and in daily
life, and often think about how to develop it further.
Accomplishing: You’ve reached your competency goals and are always thinking about
opportunities to use this competency.
Exemplary: You’ve mastered this competency – you completely understand this
competency and are constantly using it in all areas of your life.
4. Include two to three examples of how and when you’ve demonstrated the competency.
Not sure where to start? Use the sample competency gap analysis on page 2.

Provide an example about where and how you’ve demonstrated this competency, and explain why you’ve
chosen your competency rating.
Where and how you’ve demonstrated this competency and where:
• I make an effort to complement other staff members when they do something
helpful/positive in the coffee shop where I work.
• I’ve drafted a study plan for next semester to better organize my study time.
• I’ve made a personal commitment to complete this GAP analysis in order to better
understand the competencies I need to work on for my future success.
Why you’ve chosen your competency rating:
• I’m not always consistent in acknowledging good work on the part of co-workers and don’t
always respond in a receptive manner when they voice their opinions/perspectives.
• I’ve made study plans before but don’t always follow them.
• I haven’t completed this GAP analysis yet or a plan to develop the competencies I need to
work on.
