How to Join Our Goshen Middle School Band
2011-2012
Dear Parents,
Your child has recently had the opportunity to hear one of our middle school bands and learn about playing a
band instrument. The Goshen Community Schools are pleased to offer beginning band instruction at Goshen
Middle School to students who will be entering the sixth grade in the Fall. Beginning band students need no
prior musical training to be in 6th grade band. All they need is desire and opportunity, we will do the rest. No
child will be denied due to financial difficulty.
Instruction will be offered on Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, French horn, Baritone, Trombone,
Tuba and Percussion. Parents must furnish an instrument and these are available through a reasonable rental /
purchase program with Blessings School Music of Elkhart. The Goshen Band program has a long history of
excellence and we invite your child to become involved in an adventure in learning and music making.
There will be an important informational meeting for parents and students on Tuesday, May 3rd, at Goshen
Middle School in the Auditorium beginning at 7:00 pm. At that time we will discuss schedules and the
process for enrolling your child. Blessings School Music will be there to explain their rental / purchase
program and will bring with them a display of all band instruments your students can choose to play. At this
meeting you will need to select a date and time for (one) 20 minute appointment to help your child select an
instrument. Appointments start at 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm Monday, May 9th, Thursday, May 12th and Monday,
May 16th. All appointments are at Goshen Middle School in the Band Room.
Band instrument instruction will continue to be available to your child through the 12th grade. Learning to
play an instrument and belonging to the school band offers many new adventures, opportunities, and
challenges; besides being fun. Band offers many rewarding performances, from solo contests to school
concerts. Students will have the opportunity to meet many new people, opening up a whole new world of fun,
enrichment and excitement. Besides playing in middle school and high school groups, there are a wealth of
opportunities for scholarships at many colleges and universities.
If you wish to enroll your child, please complete and return the application form below to your child’s teacher
at school by Monday, April 25th, OR bring it to the parent meeting on Tuesday, May 3rd. Forms should be
turned in at school if you are unable to attend the parent meeting. Class size is important so it is necessary that
we receive this information as soon as possible. We want to hear from you. So if additional information is
desired, please contact us at GMS 533-0391, ext. 2808, or [email protected].
Respectfully,
Max Mault, Tom Cox, and Josh Kaufman

HOW DO I JOIN 6TH GRADE BAND
??BASIC QUESTIONS ASKED??
1. I don’t know how to play an instrument, how do I start? What do I do?
Think of all the instruments you have heard and seen. Pick an instrument you like
the sound of. Selecting an instrument is much like selecting a pet or a pair of
shoes. By the looks of it, by the sound of the instrument, by the way it makes you
feel.
2. What instrument is best for me?
There are no good answers to this question. Most students play an instrument that
they like the sound of or shape. Some students select an instrument that a friend,
mom or dad plays.
3. I play sports, will there be conflicts?
There are no conflicts with sports at the middle school. None.
4. What kind of instruments do you have for me to play?
This is a list of all the instruments that a student can select from:
Brass Instruments
Woodwind Instruments
Trumpet
Flute
French Horn
Clarinet
Trombone
Oboe
Baritone
Bassoon
Tuba
Saxophone
5. My friend wants to play the tuba but what should I play?
Play what inspires your heart, soothes the soul, enriches the mind.
6. I can not afford to be in band.
No student will be denied. We have instruments for you to play. Just ask!
7. I want to join band but I don’t know if I will like it.
Trying a band instrument is the best advice we band guys can give.
