Lifesaving Sport FUNdamentals
Lifesaving Sport takes the excitement of swimming and the skills of
lifeguarding and combines them into an easy, challenging and fun sport
for ages 7 to 15. Throughout the 5 level Lifesaving Sport FUNdamentals
program, athletes will gain exposure to Lifesaving Sport Principles,
Starts, Turns, Transitions & Finishes, Swim Proficiencies, Lifesaving
Sport Skills in a fun learning
environment where the focus
is on learning a new sport,
without the pressure of competition. While learning about
teamwork, and sportsmanship,
athletes will get to use special rescue manikins, throwing ropes, rescue
tubes and many other tools used every day by real lifeguards and lifesavers! Lifesaving Sport FUNdamentals is taught by specially trained
Lifesaving Coaches and uses all the same “lifeguard gear” that actual
lifeguards train with everyday.
Lifesaving Sport FUNdamentals isn’t a “learn to swim” program like
regular swimming lessons. It’s a supplement to your once a week lessons that will enhance your child’s fitness and knowledge. Coaches concentrate on developing each swimmers power, strength & endurance.
Athletes will focus on teamwork, sportsmanship, achieving personal
bests and most of all having fun! Lifesaving FUNdamentals uses the
“True Sport Principles”: Go For It, Play Fair, Respect Others, Keep it
Fun, Stay Healthy and Give Back.
Swimmer 3
Lifesaving Sport is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and is
recognized by the International Olympic Committee. Thunder Bay’s

sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front
or back crawl interval training.
Prerequisite: Swimmer 3.
SWIMMER 5
Ratio 1:10
These swimmers will master shallow
dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater
kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. Surface dives will take them
down to underwater swims. They’ll refine their front and back crawl over 50
m swims of each, and breaststroke
over 15–25m. Then they’ll pick up the

Lifesaving Programs
Lifesaving & Leadership Course Refund Policy
Because of the nature of the Lifesaving and Leadership courses there is a different refund policy. Some of these courses develop
waiting lists so there is the potential to run them at their maximum. If a participant cancels at the last minute then someone waiting for this course may not be able to be contacted in time to register for the spot vacated.
If you request a refund with less than 2 business days before the start of the course you are charged 20% of the course registration fee to a maximum of $40. If a participant requests a refund after the start date then they are charged 20% of the course registration fee (to a maximum of $40) and a portion of the registration fee for the classes they attended.
Medical Certificates must accompany all late medically related refund requests. If a refund is granted the amount of the refund
will be pro-rated taking into consideration the number of classes remaining in the program.
Note: 100% attendance is mandatory for all the courses listed below (continuous evaluation)

Corey Wesley
Corey’s training philosophy is that ‘the most important aspect of training is consistency; consistency wins over intensity
every time & intensity is born from consistency”.
Corey Wesley holds a Master’s of Science in Kinesiology degree from the Lakehead University, where he completed extensive post graduate research on the physiology of the ‘Kettlebell Swing and high intensity training’. He also completed
his Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology at Lakehead. He is a certified personal trainer with the Canadian Society for Exercise
Physiology (CSEP), a certified Russian Kettlebell Challenge instructor (RKC), a Certified Kinesiologist with OKA and
is certified in Functional Movement Screening (FMS) and Functional Muscular Assessment & Graduated Exercise Methods (FMA/GEM). Most people know Corey for his kettlebell training classes, however, he has experience working with a wide range of populations from pulmonary/cardiac rehabilitation, children to elite level athletes.
Corey is available for one on one and semi-private personal training, athletic strength & conditioning, youth athletic development, general fitness,
corporate presentations/workshops and individual fitness appraisals, functional movement screens and functional muscular assessments. He
brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to his training methods. Please contact Corey at (807)-631-5361 or [email protected] for
an initial assessment or to discuss training packages. Corey Wesley, MSc.(c) CK, HBK,RKC,FMS
Christie Olsen
I am passionate about physical fitness and helping others feel good about themselves. I am committed to making exercise
enjoyable and accessible to everyone and to motivate clients to do their best each workout. We must push ourselves beyond
our normal comfort zone in order to see progress and changes. I believe if you are willing to put in the work you will
achieve your results and I want to help you get there. I am returning to fitness training after having my second child at the
end of January. It was difficult and challenging, but I managed to continue exercising and teaching fitness classes throughout
both pregnancies, so I know what it is like to push oneself in spite of a lack of energy, inner frustrations and life and physical
changes. My infectious dedication will allow you to realize your fitness goals as well.

Jessica Eliason is a graduate from the Honours Bachelor of Kinesiology program at Lakehead University. She is a

year with Centric Health, providing rehabilitation and exercise therapy to geriatric clients. Jessica has also worked in the

Her schedule is very flexible and is willing to accommodate even the busiest of clients. She is also able to arrange for

Milos Sepa
My name is Milos Sepa and I’m certified with International Sports Sciences Association and in Red Cross First Aid CPR/AED.
How many times have you looked at an old picture of yourself and said “Man, I looked good back then.” Followed by, “I
could never look that great again.” Well I’m here to tell you nothing is impossible. If you have the motivation, I have the
knowledge and tools to help you look and feel better. I can’t turn back time but I can help you slow down the effects it has
on the body. Nothing should stop you from reaching your potential. My routines are based on biomechanical, kinetic
movements that a lot of others overlook. Doing such movements reduces injury, improves core stability and produces
power and flexibility. Multi joint movements are key factors in everyday life. Strengthening these muscles will make you
feel energized and look more toned than before. You can reach me at 620-2821 or [email protected]

Julie Cybulski Malik
Julie is a competitive boxer (with 25+ fights), and uses her boxing and fitness background to help you achieve your goals.
Julie works with you to set up a program that is customized to help you reach your own specific fitness goals. This isn't
boot camp; Julie doesn't yell or shout. Julie has found that the best way to encourage someone is to make the exercise rewarding, fun, and to work alongside you. It can be challenging to exercise alone, and hard to motivate yourself to get up
and go, especially when you first start. But with Julie’s workouts, you'll enjoy the encouraging environment so you'll
actually look forward to working out.
As a boxer, Julie has seen how macho attitudes can turn people off of training. She recognizes that starting a fitness program
can seem intimidating or daunting. Julie strives to make each workout fun, positive, and challenging. Julie is a CanFitPro
certified personal trainer, and is a graduate of Western University (Masters of Music Education, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Education). You

Work on the new heating and ventilation system concluded this Fall. You should expect more consistent and comfortable
temperatures throughout the building and a significant reduction in the amount of humidity on the pool deck. Feel free
to ask any of our staff about this state of the art addition to our facility.
Rate Change
The fees for some of our swim programs, Aquabics and Rentals (including parties) will change on April 1, 2013 pending
approval from City Council. Please check the appropriate page in the Key or contact the pool for further details.
Do you want updates on what’s going on at your neighbourhood pool?
Churchill Pool and Volunteer Pool will soon be offering updates through e-mail alerts. Save yourself the disappointment
of coming to the pool and finding the doors locked or the sauna not in service. We will let you know before you get here!
Talk to the staff at the front desk to get signed up.
Swim For A Twoonie
Churchill Pool and Volunteer Pool are continuing to offer twoonie swims on the third Friday of every month. Please join
for a reduced rate during family and public swims. For further details, please call your neighbourhood pool.
Admission Standards
As part of our commitment to providing safe and enjoyable aquatic programs for swimmers of all ages, we are continuing to enforce the admission standards provided to us by the Ministry of Health. To help us in this maintain this
standard please keep the following in mind when visiting our pools:
1) There must be one supervising caregiver for every 2 children under the age of 6.
2) There must be one supervising caregiver for every 4 non-swimming children aged 6 to 9.
In both cases the supervising caregiver must be able to give immediate assistance. If you have any questions please
feel free to call Volunteer Pool at 345-5143 or Churchill Pool at 577-2538.

learn to enjoy the water with the parent.
Your child will experience safety
awareness and water skills through discovery, front and back floats, submersion and movement skills. Active
parent participation is required.
PRESCHOOL A
Ratio 1:4
We encourage the parent to participate
until their child lets them know they
can do it themselves (thank you very
much). These preschoolers will have
fun learning to get in and out of the
water. We’ll help them jump into chest
deep water. They’ll try floats on their
front and back, and glides on their back
while wearing a personal flotation device (PFD). They’ll learn to get their
face wet and blow bubbles underwater.
PRESCHOOL B
Ratio 1:4
These preschoolers learn to jump into
chest deep water by themselves, and
get in and get out wearing a personal
flotation device. They’ll submerge and
exhale underwater. While wearing a
personal flotation device they’ll glide
on their front and back.
Prerequisite: Completed Preschool A.
PRESCHOOL C
Ratio 1:4
These youngsters will try both jumping
and a side roll into deep water while
wearing a personal flotation device.
They’ll recover objects from the bottom in waist-deep water. They’ll work
on kicking and gliding through the
water on their front and back.
Prerequisite: Completed Preschool B.
PRESCHOOL D
Ratio 1:4
Advanced preschoolers will learn to do
solo jumps into deeper water and get
out by themselves. They’ll do side roll
entries and open their eyes underwater.
They’ll master a short (3–5 m) swim on
their front and gliding and kicking on
their side.
Prerequisite: Completed Preschool C.
PRESCHOOL E
Ratio 1:4
These youngsters get more adventuresome with a forward roll entry wearing
a PFD and holding their breath underwater for up to 10 sec. They’ll work on
longer front and back crawl swims, interval training and get a giggle out of
whip kick.
Prerequisite: Completed Preschool D.
SWIMMER 1
Ratio 1:4
These beginners will become comfortable jumping into water with and without a personal flotation device. They’ll
learn to open their eyes, exhale and hold
their breath underwater. They’ll work
on floats, glides and kicking through the
water on their front and back.
Prerequisite: Beginner, non-swimmer
or Preschool A, B or C.
SWIMMER 2
Ratio 1:4
These advanced beginners will jump
into deeper water, and learn to be comfortable falling sideways into the water
wearing a personal flotation device.
They’ll be able to support themselves at
the surface without an aid, learn whip
kick, swim 10–15 m on their front and
back, and be introduced to flutter kick
interval training (4 x 9–12 m).
Prerequisite: Swimmer 1 or Preschool
D or E.
SWIMMER 3
Ratio 1:5
These junior swimmers will dive and
do in-water front somersaults. Their
new bag of tricks includes handstands
and completion of the Canadian Swim
to Survive® Standard. They’ll work on
10 15m of front crawl, back crawl and
whip kick. Flutter kick interval training
increases to 4 x 25 m.
Prerequisite: Swimmer 2.
SWIMMER 4
Ratio 1:5
These intermediate swimmers will
swim 5 m underwater and lengths of
front, back crawl, whip kick, and
breaststroke arms with breathing.
They’ll cap it all off with front crawl
sprints over 25 m and 4 x 25 m front or
back crawl interval training.
Prerequisite: Swimmer 3.
SWIMMER 5
Ratio 1:6
These swimmers will master shallow
dives, cannonball entries, eggbeater
kicks, and in-water backward somersaults. Surface dives will take them
down to underwater swims. They’ll refine their front and back crawl over 50
m swims of each, and breaststroke over
15–25m. Then they’ll pick up the pace
in 25 m sprints and two interval training bouts: 4 x 50 m front or back crawl;
and 4 x 10–15 m breaststroke.
Prerequisite: Swimmer 4.
SWIMMER 6
Ratio 1:6
These advanced swimmers will rise to
the challenge of sophisticated aquatic
skills including stride entries, compact
jumps and lifesaving kicks like eggbeater and scissor kick. They’ll develop
strength and power in head-up breaststroke sprints over 25 m. They’ll easily
swim lengths of front crawl, back
crawl, and breaststroke, and they’ll
complain about the 300 m workout.
Prerequisite: Swimmer 5.

and allergic reactions. Lifesaving skills
include defence methods, victim removals and rolling over and supporting
a victim face up in shallow water.
Prerequisite: Range Patrol.
