SLOUGH
Dead skin cells equal dull skin tone. And by not getting
rid of them, you’re sabotaging the hydrating effects of
body cleansers and moisturizers as they try to “battle
through” the buildup barrier. Use a body scrub about
twice a week. Alternatively, try daily dry-body brushing
before showering. How to: Using a brush or loofah mitt,
buff your skin in circular motions (don’t scrub too hard),
starting with the soles of your feet, then working upward
on legs, front and back. Pay special attention to backs
of the thighs, upper arms and hips. Of course, in the
shower, you can use a nylon puff or sea sponge with
your favourite body cleanser for a more gentle slough.

The billowy sleeved peasant top and its modified versions (floaty blouses
that fall loosely from the body) are lending a soft touch to spring. They can
be forgiving, but you still may need to pay attention to body type to get the
most flattering effect.

Many regular soaps are alkaline and dry out the skin,
leaving a tight feeling. Because it takes nearly 24 hours
for the skin to start releasing natural oils again, depleting
them in this way means you’re not getting the most out
of putting on a moisturizer after washing. One solution
is to use a body wash or shower gel that is specially
designed to hydrate the skin while you cleanse (e.g.,
glycerin-based formulas).

You’ll get smoother, softer skin by applying a thin coat
of body cream or moisturizer to just-out-of-the-shower
damp skin. Then, reapply five minutes later. (Try this:
Warm the bottle by taking it into the shower with
you.) Some women love the spa-at-home treat of a
“dry body oil” (beauty-speak for fast-absorbing oil)
for leaving skin radiant, or a firming cream designed
to improve collagen and elastin to help with slackening. Reminder: The skin on the back of your hands is
as thin and delicate as the skin on your eyelids, so use
hand cream regularly—hydrate three times a day.

What to do about cellulite? Women of all sizes have it.
Experts say the best way to manage dimpled skin is
to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, drink enough water
and exercise regularly. Dry-body brushing also helps
skin look smoother because it stimulates microcirculation and aids in lymphatic drainage. If you can’t make
peace with these dimples, cellulite creams, whose
effects are temporary, can’t hurt; the mechanical
action alone of massaging creams into bumpy areas
may contribute to improving skin’s appearance.

cellulite. Gradual-tan products are the least tricky to
use; it’s easier to avoid the streaking that can occur
with instant tanners.

BH110614.indd 68
Answers to everyday health questions, based on the freshest research findings
You don’t need to find a class! Grab a friend (or go solo), and hit a park
for a tough one-hour workout that’s guaranteed to get you slimmer and fitter
THEY’RE STILL A HOT TREND IN FITNESS,
and you can see why: Boot camps burn a ton of calories—according to the American Council on Exercise, you can burn about 600 in an hour!
“Boot camps are efficient because they encompass
all aspects of fitness,” says trainer Geoff Bagshaw, a
former Vancouverite who is group fitness director for
Equinox in Miami and has run boot camps throughout North America. “You gain strength and endurance, improve your cardio and develop flexibility.”
So let’s take it outside! Do this workout twice a
week, plus cardio three times a week (on alternate
days) at a moderate to intense level for 45 minutes.
Pair that with a healthy diet and you could lose 10
pounds in one month! (Need a slim-down meal plan?
We have one: Turn to page 104 for breakfast, lunch
and dinner recipes, and even snack ideas.)
This is a challenging workout, and though there
are options for beginners, if you are new to fitness
you should check with a doctor before starting out.
BONUS
What Works What Doesn’t
Pick a park that has some open space, a tree and
a bench, if possible.
Each interval has two cardio, one strength and
one core exercise. “But many of the cardio drills are
also strength drills, so be prepared to use all your
muscles,” says Bagshaw. From start to finish, the
workout should take one hour. Remember to keep
drinking water to stay hydrated!
Get started
Drop your yoga mat, take 50 long strides across the
park, and drop your towel there—this should give
you a distance of about 50 metres to work in.
INTERVAL 1 WARM-UP/CARDIO KICK (10-15 MINUTES)
JOG For 30 seconds.
LUNGE Starting with
right leg, step forward
into a lunge, knee perpendicular to your ankle, dropping left
shin parallel with ground. As you
straighten right leg, bring left leg forward, take a big step and drop it into
a lunge. Lunge your way down to the
towel and back.
BACK KICK With the back of your
hand flat on your glutes, jog down to
your towel and back while kicking
your heels backwards to hands.
FRANKENSTEIN WALK (Shown)
Kick left leg straight, reaching toward
toes with both hands. Alternate legs,
walking down to the towel and back.

elbows wide. Bring right knee up, and
cross left elbow, touching top of knee.
Alternate sides for 30 seconds.
SQUAT Stand with feet hip-width
apart, arms at sides. Bend knees, with
hips back, and lower your butt down as
though sitting on a chair. Touch ankles
with hands. As you stand up, squeeze
glutes together, reach arms overhead
and rise up on balls of your feet.
“This gets the heart rate
Cardio
up and keeps it elevated,

burning more calories,”
says Bagshaw.
RUN Sprint down, touch towel, sprint
back and touch mat. Do twice.
LUNGE Complete another set of
lunges, this time lunging with the
right leg down to the towel, then the
left leg on the way back.
BACK KICK Run to the towel and
back while doing back kicks.
FAST FRANKENSTEIN WALK
Standing in place, quickly kick your
legs in front, reaching for toes. Do for
one minute.
CROSS Stand with feet hip-width
apart, hands behind your head and
elbows wide. Raise left knee and reach
right elbow down toward raised knee.
Repeat 25 times. Switch sides.
POWER SQUATS Do a squat, touching ankles with hands. As you come up,
leap off the ground, swinging arms to
the sky. Land softly, and go into a squat.
Repeat quickly for one minute. →
Do weight-loss groups help people drop more weight?
The studies are unequivocal: People who attend support groups as part of
Yes a comprehensive weight-loss program lose more than those who go it alone.
That’s not surprising considering how difficult it can be to cut calories and
stay motivated day in and day out. Researchers at the New York Obesity Research
Center found that among 423 study participants, those who took part in a commercial weight-loss program with group support lost more weight during the first year—
10 pounds compared to three pounds—than those who tried weight loss on their own.
Is it really necessary to
consult your doctor
before taking a vitamin
or mineral supplement?
Many common supplements
Yes can react with certain prescription drugs, and the
results can be dangerous. Folic acid,
for example, can interact with anticonvulsant medications. If you are taking
a prescription blood thinner such as
warfarin, you should not take
vitamin E, vitamin K, garlic,
fish oil, ginkgo biloba
or ASA; all can thin
the blood (and too
much blood thinning can cause bleeding in the brain).
Even if you’re not taking medications,
talk with your doctor about which
products—and how much—to take.

Some brown breads are
no
merely white breads baked
with caramel colouring or another
additive to give them a darker hue.
Look for packages that say “100
percent whole wheat” or “100 percent whole grain.” Also, check the
ingredient list to make
sure “whole wheat
flour” is first. And
bread with a coarse
texture has less
of an impact
on blood
sugar.
Can you overuse eyedrops?
Eyedrops that promise to erase
redness contain a decongestant
that narrows blood-filled capillaries,
making them less visible, so the redness fades. But decongestant drops are
weak and their effects wear off quickly.
If you use them too many times in a
row, you may experience a rebound
effect, in which the capillaries become
even more dilated. To avoid this, don’t
use these eyedrops for more than a
few days at a time. If your redness lasts
longer, go to an optometrist or ophthalmologist to evaluate the problem.
Yes
Can cleaning your
ducts prevent health
problems?
Many duct-cleaning comno panies would have you
believe that the air ducts
for your heating and air conditioning system harbour the mould
spores and dust that aggravate
allergies and asthma—and propose
high-priced cleaning as the fix.
But duct cleaning has never been
proven to prevent health problems. In fact, one study found that
most of the ducts tested were virtually free of dust mites. If there is
a buildup of mould, dirt or moisture, or if insects or rodents have
moved in, your ducts will need
more than cleaning—they’ll need
to be repaired.

our featured participant gets advice from a life coach to help her
start living her dreams By Erin PhElan
If you had asked kelly Mathews
one year ago if she would be planning an
extended trip to England and spending her
free time blogging about the Royals—or even
having free time, for that matter—she would
have laughed. “This time last year I was coming off of working for almost three months
straight without a day off. I had gained a ton
of weight and had zero time for my friends,
family or partner, Kevin. I loved my work, but
I knew I wasn’t living a balanced life.”
A lot has changed. In March 2011, Kelly
decided to become a consultant (she has
done work for Reader’s Digest, which publishes Best Health), and she says that was
one of the hardest career changes she’s ever
made, because she loved her old job. Now,
as our featured participant in the annual Best
Health Challenge, she’s on a journey back to
better physical health. (She’s become a lot
more fit, and it shows in the photo.) Part of
the Challenge is to find more life balance, and
for that Kelly is getting help.
Until she started the Challenge, Kelly had
never thought she’d benefit from life coaching. “I’ve always been an advocate for other
people seeing a life coach or therapist but
never thought self-reflection would help me
very much. I was wrong!”
Kelly had already thrown herself wholeheartedly into the Challenge—committing
to her fitness regimen with a workout from
celebrity trainer Bruce Krahn, and overhauling her diet with advice and a meal plan
from nutritionist Sue Mah—when she met
Dr. Susan Biali, a Vancouver-based life coach
and medical doctor. That’s when she decided
she needed to open the emotional floodgates,
too. During their first session together, they
produced six pages of notes for ways Kelly
wanted to transform her life. “Verbalizing
WIN
thoughts I haven’t said out loud was hard. I
never thought I’d be so open or emotional in
front of a stranger,” says Kelly.
“Life coaches help discover the real you,”
explains Susan. “In our society we are not
encouraged to be our true selves, or to nurture those passions that aren’t practical or
that don’t lead to conventional success. As
a result, many people spend their lives trying to conform rather than live authentically.
A life coach encourages you to express who
you are and helps you get back to what you
love, what you care about, your values, and
what you want your life to feel like.”
One of the things Susan and Kelly worked
on during their face-to-face meeting, weekly
phone calls and regular emails was to quiet
Kelly’s habit of negative self-talk. “Kevin is
my biggest cheerleader,” says Kelly. “And it
away from her best self—that’s how the KRM
concept emerged,” says Susan.
So, who is KRM? “She is athletic and superfit, and loves competing on teams,” Kelly
says. “She prioritizes family, friends and her
relationship with her partner, and she loves
travel and adventure. KRM enjoys a good
book, coffee on her porch and a romantic
weekend getaway. And she’s a size 8.”
Susan delved into the heart of Kelly’s passions during their sessions. “That gave us
clear guidelines for the changes that needed
to be made. Life coaches look for signs—or
happiness flags—because these are the things
that make life fulfilling for a person,” Susan
says. A huge flag went up when Kelly talked
about how much she loves softball, a sport
she has enjoyed since she was 12—but hasn’t
played since 2006. With Susan’s encouragement, Kelly joined a
co-ed team, which

antioxidants:
Antioxidants mop up the damaging free radicals in our
bodies and contribute to a longer and healthier life.
A growing body of research is adding evidence to the fact that antioxidants stabilize the
damaging free radicals that are created in our bodies every day. A byproduct of the natural
use of oxygen by our bodies, free radicals cause the kind of cellular damage that has
been linked with a wide range of chronic diseases ranging from heart disease and cancer

Researchers have identified hundreds of antioxidants in our foods, including vitamins E and
C, selenium, and carotenoids such as beta-carotene and lycopene. Plus there’s a great deal
of attention being paid to a particularly potent group of antioxidants called polyphenols,
which can be found in a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, and teas.

Nutritionists recommend looking for a broad range of antioxidants to add to your diet,
because in addition to the fact that they are all free-radical warriors, they all have their own
individual health benefits. Start by looking for fruits, vegetables, and juices with deep, dark

Best Health Readership Estimate Calculation
Best Health readership estimates are based on audience as
measured in a Harris Decima 2011 study. Readership for products,
psychographics and demographics not measured in the Harris
Decima study are estimated by applying factors derived from
PMB Spring 2011 study to the Harris Decima results.
1.
Best Health potential readers are identified
in PMB as respondents who fall into any three,
or all four, of the following four PMB segments
(which have been selected to represent the four
basic Best Health pillars):
• Keep Abreast of Fashion (Look Great pillar)
• Health Enthusiasts (Get Healthy pillar)
• Nutrition Conscious (Eat Well pillar)
• My Life is Meaningful (Embrace Life pillar)
2.
This group is then weighted by gender,
age, region, household income and language
to reflect the Best Health demographic profile
as reported by Harris Decima 2011. The group
is weighted so that the total population number
for this group is 1,644,550 - the Best Health
audience figure as reported by Harris Decima
3.
Finally, the characteristics of these
potential readers are analyzed within the
PMB database and used to calibrate the Harris
readership results.
While admittedly these are estimates and therefore only an
approximation of Best Health’s true readership, they directionally
offer an indication of Best Health’s readership from both a
psychographic (as generated by the initial core group who demonstrate
interest in any three or all four BH pillars), and demographic
(as generated by the various demographic weightings), standpoint.
