Ibw to paint How to pick a stain amid exterior surfaces burgeoning technologies a* There are many considerations to take into account during exterior applications. The following suggestions work whether you are painting over wood, cement, fiberboard, trim, stucco, brick, etc. First, determine if you are painting a surface for the first time or are actually, repainting a previously coated, substrate. Many people look at their wood and assume that they are painting wood, when actually they are re-painting a previously applied coating. Once this has been determined, consult your Pittsburgh Paints dealer for the proper primer and topcoat recommendation. Secondly, prepare the surface. The most important thing to remember is that topcoats do not "heal" a bad surface. It •will temporarily hide it, but the failures will reoccur, and may be worse when it happens again. Touch the surface and see if there is chalking or a white, powdery texture. Examine the surface for cracking, peeling, mildew, ,dirt or water damage. Be aware of how old or fresh the surface is, especially if you are painting cement or a surface that has high alkalinity. Scrape all peeling paint, sand glossy areas, spot prime bare wood and wash the entire surface to remove dirt. Apply a Mildew Check Multi-Purpose Wash to retard the reappearance of mildew on your prepared surface. Third, be aware of the weather conditions when you paint. You can make or break a paint job by applying paint over a surface that is too cold, too hot or too damp. Do not paint when temperatures are below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (unless otherwise noted in the literature) or above 100 F. For best resaults, do not paint in the direct sun or if rain is expected within-24 hours. You will protect and beautify your buildings for years to come when you do not short cut your application and paint decisions. The benefit is yours. As a global leader, Pittsburgh Paints provides a full line of exterior stains, encompassing many diffemt technologies. Each technology is designed to handle nature's harshest elements: sun, rain and mildew. Pittsburgh Paints Sunproof stains are available in alkyd/oil, 100 percent acrylic latex and acrylic/oU-penetrating formulas. As both the environment and the lifestyle choices we make change, we are finding that the products from 25 years ago no longer fit today's needs. Although Pittsburgh Paints offers a complete array of technologies, government regulations and new upcoming legislations are continually impacting the products that Pittsburgh Paints can ship into certain regions of the country. At the same time, more people prefer the ease of soap and water clean-up products. Finally, technological advances are coming in leaps and bounds. The best technology in the past (oil stain) is no longer leading the durability category. These are three examples of why the technologies in the stain market are being reshaped. One of the new technologies that Pittsburgh Paints has available in the SunProof Stain line is acrylic/oil. This penetrating oil technology is considered to be the wave of the future. The acrylic/oil technology has been perfected over the past 10 years and is changing the stain market for the better. This new technology offers superior color retention when compared to alkyd/oil technology, the flexibility of being applied at a broad range of temperatures, and soap and water clean-up. In addition, the penetrating oil component preserves and enhances the natural beauty of wood. Products made with this technology do not have any of the milky appearance that has been seen with latex coatings of the past, and maintain the longer durability that is commonly attributed to latex coatings. This new technology is available nationwide and if is the only technology available in areas where VOC's (volatile organic compounds) are regulated. The acrylic/oil technology works so well because of an interesting curing mechanism. It has an alkyd core, with an acrylic shell. This two-stage dry yields excellent open time, lap resistance and stability. The oil penetrates into the wood leaving a protective shell providing double protection for the wood. This means that the acrylic/oil technology has the benefit of an alkyd in the brush, feel and application, and the benefits of a latex in durability and color retention. This state-of-the-art acrylic/oil resin provides the best of both worlds and is poised to become the wave of the future. ^> OS w BS « s See us for your exterior & interior paint projects.
