York Technical College makes it possible for both prospective and
enrolled students to search for credit classes and/or continuing
education classes anywhere, anytime. With a computer and an
Internet connection, students are able to obtain the most accurate,
up-to-date information about available classes. This enables York
Technical College students to make the most of their time, and it
helps to ensure that they have access to the right information, at the
right time, to make the best possible decisions regarding their
education.
The quality of information that is accessible online is another key
consideration. Unlike paper class schedules that are outdated as
soon they come off the press, the information found online is
continually being updated. So when new classes or new sections
are added, the information immediately becomes available. As a
result, students are better able to arrange their schedules by
knowing up front the classes that are full and those that are still
open.
For students who do not have access to a computer with an Internet
connection, hard copies of credit class offerings may be obtained by
contacting the Admissions Office at (803) 327-8008. To obtain a hard
copy of continuing education class offerings, call (803) 325-2888.
More information about continuing education courses and programs
is available on page 13.

York Technical College
Spring/Summer 2006
Enrollment Information
Residency Information
In accordance with South Carolina Code of Laws 59-112-20,
York Technical College is required to determine the residence
classification of applicants at the time of admission. To qualify for
in-state tuition, a legal resident must have maintained his/her
domicile in South Carolina for at least 12 months immediately
preceding the first day of classes for the term for which resident
classification is sought. Students who do not meet this
requirement should contact the Admissions Office for more
information on exceptions and for a copy of the SC Code of Laws
governing residency. In addition to the requirements above, legal
residents of SC must also be either U.S. citizens or have been
awarded permanent resident status by the U.S. Department of
Justice.
The information the student declares will be used for
calculation of tuition each semester until the student initiates and
documents the change in residency status. Students paying instate tuition and fees who are later determined to be non-South
Carolina residents will be required to pay the difference between
resident and non-resident tuition and fees retroactive to the
beginning of the semester in question. The burden of proof
resides with the student to show evidence, as deemed necessary,
to establish residency. Students are responsible for informing the
College of any temporary or permanent changes in residence.
Registration Guide
If you have a documented disability and would like to request
special accommodations for the placement test, you need to speak
with someone in the Special Resources Office (SRO) BEFORE
YOU TAKE THE TEST. The SRO is located in the Student
Services Building. If you request accommodations AFTER you
take the placement test, you will be required to pay the re-test fee.
Counseling and Admissions
New students will meet with an admissions counselor to
discuss career goals. The counselor will also discuss your
placement test scores (if applicable) and how they are used to
help determine the best level of beginning courses. If you need
further assistance in choosing a major, the counselor will refer you
to the Career Center which contains state-of-the-art resources
designated to help you learn more about career opportunities and
your interests and skills.
Qualified applicants will be accepted to the College and into a
program of study. Students will then receive information about
orientation, advising and registration.
Students taking courses for self-improvement or career
development may speak with a counselor to determine what
prerequisites may be needed.
Financial Resources
Application and Placement Testing
If you are a new student, complete and submit a York
Technical College application for admission. Applications are
available in the Admissions Office or you can complete and submit
the application at www.yorktech.com. Contact the Admissions
Office to determine whether you will need to take the York
Technical College placement test. The purpose of the placement
test is to determine appropriate levels of English, math, and
reading. Your test results will be used to determine whether you
are ready for credit courses or if you need remediation in one or
more subject areas. Your placement test scores will more
accurately reflect your abilities if you follow all instructions very
carefully and are prepared to do your best. It is important that you
are alert and well-rested. The placement test fee is $10 and the retest fee is $50. (If you have had courses at other institutions, or if
you have SAT or ACT scores, the test may not be necessary.
Contact the Admissions Office for additional information.)

Federal and State Policy
Students receiving a federal Pell Grant or FSEOG funds who
completely withdraw from a term are required to return a
portion of their unearned aid to the appropriate Title IV aid
program. Students earn their aid based on the period of time they
remain enrolled. Students who remain enrolled beyond the 60
percent point earn all of their aid for that period. Students who
owe funds to a Title IV aid program will be billed and are not
eligible to receive any additional Title IV funds until the amount
owed is repaid or satisfactory repayment arrangements are made.
Please contact the Financial Aid office for more detailed
information. Students receiving the LIFE Scholarship, the South
Carolina Need-Based Grant (SCNBG), or lottery-funded tuition
assistance who completely withdraw from a term will be reviewed
based on the general refund policy.

Distance learning classes are the same as classes taught on
the main campus except for the method by which they are
delivered. Students who are self-motivated, self-directed, and
independent learners will benefit from this form of instructional
delivery. Admission, registration, and tuition are the same as for
classes on the main campus.

Teleclasses
Teleclasses are live, two-way, audio/video interactive classes
that are delivered from the main campus of York Technical
College to other locations.
Telecourses
Telecourses are designed for home and off-campus use and
contain the same content as an on-campus class.
Benefits of telecourses: choice of location, choice of time,
elimination of travel to main campus except for selected
sessions, same course outcomes, same tuition costs,
instructor support, and student services support.
Most of the telecourses combine prepackaged videotaped
instruction with textbooks, study guides, and instructor
support that are part of all telecourses. The text-based
courses do not have a video component.
Telecourse students must attend one of the Telecourse
Orientations at the beginning of each semester. Students who
miss more than 20% of work assigned will be withdrawn.
Student requirements for telecourses include:
- access to a VCR for viewing video tapes
- rental fee for video-based courses
- attendance at one orientation session on the main
campus at the beginning of the semester
- completion of exams/projects at the main campus
Online Courses

Online courses are taught on the Internet, and it is
recommended that students have a computer manufactured no
earlier than 2002, with a Windows XP operating system. Students
also must have access to the Internet - preferably with a DSL or
cable modem or access to open computer labs on campus.
Some basic Internet skills are necessary to be successful in
online courses. Many of the online courses require students to
take their tests in the Assessment Center on campus or in an
approved proctored environment off campus. Please contact Anita
McBride at (803) 981-7044 for more information or go online at

Student Right-To-Know
and Campus Security Act
The Student Right-To-Know information describes the
current progress made by students pursuing a degree, diploma or
certificate at the College. The completion rate of 445 first-time,
full-time freshmen beginning York Technical College in Fall 2001
was 10.6%. This indicates that 47 of the 445 students completed
their program within 150% of the program time. This same group
of students had a 38.4% retention rate for the same period. This
indicates 171 of the 445 students either completed their program
within 150% of the program time, transferred to another institution
or are still enrolled at York Technical College.
The Campus Security Act requires the College to distribute
to all current students and college staff members campus security
policies and statistics concerning specific types of campus
crimes. Published annually and distributed through the Class
Schedule, this information is also available from the Office of the
Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs upon
request and at the web addresses listed below:

The Department of Public Safety Chief is a certified law
enforcement officer. Rock Hill City Police respond to requests for
assistance in security matters if needed. Announcements and
descriptions of crime prevention programs are available through
a campus poster program and the Student Activities Calendar.
This information is available to students and other campus
participants as well. A bulletin board program is maintained by
Student Activities.
Crime prevention activities are programmed each year by
Student Activities and the College’s Continuing Education
Department. Information is available through bulletin board ads,
Student News, and through the Continuing Education Schedule
of Short Courses.
A policy statement regarding alcohol and illegal drugs is
distributed to all students and campus personnel at least once a
year. This policy outlines very clearly the punishment for violation
of South Carolina laws dealing with illegal drugs and alcohol,
along with severity of the penalty depending on the type of illegal
drug in question.
The College provides programs each year dealing with
alcohol and drug abuse. In addition, the College has an
agreement with an off-campus agency to counsel with any
campus personnel in need of services. The College offers
programs such as Red Ribbon Week, the Health Fair and a
poster campaign dealing with the consequences of alcohol and
drug abuse. The College also publishes an annual campus
crime report. A paper copy of the report will be provided upon
request to the Associate Vice President for Academic and
Student Affairs office.
PUBLIC SAFETY
CRIME AWARENESS INFORMATION
FOR PUBLIC LAW 101-542
(THE STUDENT RIGHT-TO-KNOW
AND CAMPUS SECURITY ACT)
Public Law 101-542, The Student Right-To-Know and
Campus Security Act, directs colleges to publish crime
awareness information for current and prospective students.
Crimes on campus are reported to the campus security guards.
The Associate Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs is
notified of any crimes on campus that involve students. Incident
reports are completed by security guards and sent to the
Supervisor of Campus Security and the Vice President for
Business Affairs.
Campus security and facility access are the responsibility of
the Department of Public Safety. Campus access is limited after
11:30 p.m. with campus gates blocking all entrances. Gates are
open at 7:00 a.m. each morning. Faculty or staff personnel who
visit the campus after closure of buildings must contact a security
guard. The visit must be arranged in advance through the Office
of the Vice President for Business Affairs.

Explanations of Campus Policy and Public Safety
Procedures can be obtained from the Office of the Associate
Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs; or emergency
help can be obtained by dialing “0” for the campus operator.
DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS AND CAMPUSES
INITIATIVE
It is the policy of York Technical College to provide a drugfree, healthful, safe, and secure educational environment.
Students are required and expected to report to their classes or
student activities in an appropriate mental and physical condition
to meet the requirements and expectations of their role. In order
to prevent the consequences of alcohol and other drug use in the
educational setting, the South Carolina Technical Education
System has implemented a policy to ensure a drug-free
educational environment. This policy is published and made
available to all students annually in the Orientation Resources
booklet and online at www.yorktech.com under College
Information.
