An Invitation from the Summit Team
We are a community, united by a collective passion and mission.
Our vision is an inclusive society that is so pervasive it transforms
our workplaces and all aspects of our lives. To achieve this vision
we must focus on diversity work beyond our office walls. We must
direct our energy towards initiatives that drive change, not just in
our businesses, but also in our communities, in our country, and
around the world.
The Summit on Leading Diversity’s mission is to develop your
capacity as a diversity leader to create an inclusive workforce,
management team, and leadership team. In 2006 we will focus on
initiatives directly impacting employees by helping organizations
create inclusive work environments that demand diversity
competence from managers and leaders. We will discuss how to
connect diversity with every function in an organization, shifting
diversity from a stand-alone initiative to a core component of all
business activities. Additionally, we will address the greater macro
strategy of championing personal and corporate investments
in local communities and K-12 children, ensuring that we are
feeding a skilled talent pipeline to build a more diverse talent pool
for the future of our organizations.
In summary, the content addressed at The 2006 Summit on
Leading Diversity will combine practical approaches and action
plans with a spirit and energy that will enable you to create and
execute integrated diversity strategies, which will positively impact
employees, business results, and your surrounding communities.
We hope you will join us and more than 600 participants in
Atlanta.

Rosario Marin came to America from Mexico
at the age of 14 unable to speak English. In
August of 2001, Ms. Marin, the daughter of
a janitor and seamstress, was sworn in as the
41st Treasurer of the United States, becoming
the highest ranking Latina in the G.W. Bush
Administration and the first foreign born U.S.
Treasurer to hold this office. After her son
Eric was born with Down Syndrome, Ms.
Marin became a fierce advocate for people
with disabilities, and she saw a particular
need for a support and advocacy group to
help Spanish speaking families with children
with disabilities. In 1987, Ms. Marin founded
such a group, which later came to be called
FUERZA, and as President she spent countless
hours assisting and counseling families and
lobbying the California Legislature to change
the laws to help people with disabilities. Ms.
Marin was later appointed by Governor Wilson
to Chair the State Council on Developmental
Disabilities, and in 1996 Marin was named
to the Special Olympics Board of Directors,
where she continues to serve today.
During the civil rights movement, lawyer
Morris Dees, Jr. took racism head on by
actively aiding minorities in court. His chain
of ground-breaking victories pushed the civil
rights agenda forward by leaps and bounds.
In 1971, he co-founded the Southern Poverty
Law Center as a small civil rights law firm,
which is internationally known today for its
tolerance programs, legal victories against white
supremacists, and tracking of hate groups.
To help educate young people about the civil
rights movement, Mr. Dees spearheaded the
construction of The Civil Rights Memorial
and developed ideas for “Teaching Tolerance,”
the Center’s well-regarded education project.
Several years ago, Mr. Dees developed an
innovative legal strategy: the leadership of racist
organizations would be held accountable for
the violent consequences of their activities.
In 1987, he used the strategy in a $7 million
wrongful death suit against the United Klans
of America, charging that its message of
racial hatred and violence inspired two Klan
members to lynch a young, black man. Mr.
Dees won, and the local Klan was bankrupted.
Lee Mun Wah is a Chinese American
community therapist, documentary filmmaker,
Special Education educator, performing poet,
Asian folkteller, and author. He is also the
Director of StirFry Seminars & Consulting,
which works with corporations, government
agencies, educational institutions, and
social agencies to facilitate diversity issues
through healthy and authentic cross cultural
relationships. Mr. Mun Wah is director and
producer of a number of award-winning films,
the best known being The Color of Fear.
Completed in April 1994, the documentary
shows eight men of diverse ethnicities talking
openly about racism. He focused on men
because he’d “never seen a film where men
of color were just talking to whites [about
racism].” In 1995 Oprah Winfrey presented a
one hour special on his work and life that was
viewed by over 15 million viewers across the
nation.
Ms. Marin’s story is an incredible example
of how one individual changed her life by
choosing success despite her circumstances.
Although her personal story of triumph is
amazing, her true success lies in her decisions
to help others by leading large scale change in
both the Hispanic community where she lived
and the disabled community at large.
Morris Dees demonstrates that teaching
tolerance with our words and actions is the key
to transforming our world. Our mission must
extend beyond the corporate walls to permeate
every action of our lives.
On a personal level, Lee Mun Wah started
this work hoping to confront his own feelings
following his mother’s 1985 murder by an
African-American man. He will share with us
about his conscious decision to choose love and
understanding over fear and ignorance, and
demonstrate how to help others do the same
through open communication and dialogue.

An urban sociologist, Pedro Noguera is
a professor in the Steinhardt School of
Education at New York University and
the Co-Director of the Institute for the
Study of Globalization and Education in
Metropolitan Settings (IGEMS). He is one
of America’s leading urban sociologists,
whose research focuses on the ways in
which schools are influenced by social
and economic conditions in the urban
environment. One of America’s leading
experts on education reform, he speaks
openly about the challenges faced by schools
and students trying to create a safe, secure,
and academically rewarding environment.
Dr. Noguera is an expert on topics such
as urban school reform, conditions that
promote student achievement, youth
violence, the potential impact of school
choice and vouchers on urban public
schools, and race and ethnic relations in
American society.
Hailed by Newsweek as “the most exciting
individual in American theater,” playwright
and performance artist Anna Deavere Smith
uses her singular brand of theater to explore
issues of race, community, and character in
America. She was awarded the prestigious
MacArthur Foundation “genius” Fellowship
for creating “a new form of theater — a
blend of theatrical art, social commentary,
journalism, and intimate reverie.” Ms. Smith
is perhaps best known as the author and
performer of two one-woman plays about
racial tensions in American cities — Fires in
the Mirror (Obie Award-winner and runnerup for the Pulitzer Prize) and Twilight: Los
Angeles 1992 (Obie Award-winner and Tony
Award nominee).
In April, 1994, Paul Rusesabagina was the
acting manager of the Mille Collines Hotel
perched on a hillside in the heart of Rwanda’s
rambling capital Kigali. As ethnic Hutus
began killing their Tutsi neighbors, Mr.
Rusesabagina—a Hutu married to a Tutsi
woman—turned his hotel into an impromptu
refugee camp for more than a thousand
terrified Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Over
the course of 100 days, almost one million
people were killed in Rwanda. Deserted by
international peacekeepers and armed with
little more than a persuasive tongue, a drink
cabinet, and a fax machine, Mr. Rusesabagina
kept the bloodthirsty militia outside the gates
during the entire hundred days of slaughter.
In the end, he survived along with his wife
and three children, as did most of the refugees
he sheltered. From that time to date, Mr.
Rusesabagina has worked as a businessman
and owns a transport company. He is also still
involved in charitable organizations aiding
survivors of the Rwandan tragedy and is in the
process of setting up a foundation in his name
for further assistance.
In this address, Dr. Noguera presents a
dynamic and profound perspective on the
issues of racial inequalities and diversity in
our schools. Explore with Dr. Noguera how
we can provide equal access to education as
he confronts head on the disparities in our
education system.
In this one woman show Anna Deveare
Smith will take us on a journey of discovery
as she transforms herself into an astonishing
number of characters from all walks of
life. Her presentation will provide us
with valuable insight into a multitude of
perspectives on controversial issues facing
America today.
We will learn how one man’s courage can
impact a nation and give hope to the otherwise
hopeless. Paul Rusesabagina’s story will inspire
all of us to find the strength to lead through
even the most desperate times.

This session will explore what it has
taken to sustain energy, interest,
and leadership in a long-term
diversity change initiative at Bentley
College. This 13-year change project
has spanned the administrations
of two presidents who differed
significantly in their understandings
and approaches to diversity. As with
any organization-wide change effort
in higher education, the initiative
has involved three very different
subcultures – the faculty, staff,
and students. In this presentation
members of Bentley’s Diversity
Strategy Group will discuss a
number of critical turning points
and strategies that kept the diversity
initiative on the “mainstream” agenda
of the university.
Organizations that understand the
link between diversity and overall
success recognize that there must
be alignment with key drivers to
be successful. But this action can’t
be an additional responsibility – it
must be an integrated responsibility.
Positioning diversity efforts to
support the execution of your overall
strategy can make the difference
between success and sustainability
and a slow meltdown. In this
session senior people leaders from
Ernst & Young will reveal how they
embarked on a strategic process that
fostered buy-in, aligned diversity
with their overall business objectives,
introduced new skills to support
inclusiveness, and integrated diversity
into goal setting.
At General Mills we understand that
the key to our continued success
is having diverse talent at senior
levels in the organization. Diverse
viewpoints and experiences enhance
our ability to stay competitive and
help incoming talent believe they
can achieve their career aspirations
whatever they may be. The talent
pipeline is dynamic and needs
constant feeding and nurturing.
Join us to learn how General Mills
optimizes its diverse talent pipeline.
Retention is one of the truest
measures of a successful
diversity/inclusion program.
Successful retention requires CPR
– Commitment, Planning and
Recruitment. Basic recruitment
concepts and practices that were
employed in the 80s and 90s need
to be updated to meet the changing
demographic demands of this
millennium. Myra Fincher reveals
how consensus was reached and
sound strategic plans were developed
at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
She will share how organizations
can engage in new and innovative
ways to recruit and profit through
inclusion.

Total Systems Change
Intervention: Leveraging
Inclusion and Diversity
Leadership in the Global
Market
Leveraging Your Leadership
Style to Maximize Results
Becoming an Authentic Leader
of Diversity
An organization-wide culture
change effort requires a clear set
of leadership capabilities and
characteristics. Fundamental to such
change are leaders who hold a vision
of the need for a new way of doing
business, can create an environment
that supports this vision, and make
the hard calls regarding people and
the old ways that must change.
Such leaders must be willing to
take risks, adaptable, curious,
trustworthy, and be able to engage
with people from an increasingly
wide range of cultures and identity
groups.
Globalization confronts
organizations with the need to
operate under new business rules,
but these new rules are often
ambiguous, counter intuitive, and
complex. To meet this challenge,
corporations are clamoring to
develop global leaders. But what
makes a great global leader? How
does leading diversity change when
moved from a national scale to a
global marketplace?
Leaders can maximize their
organizational impact by sharing
and communicating their vision for
the future in addition to aligning,
inspiring, and enabling others to
share a common direction.
Authentic leadership is essential
to creating an environment of
trust and inclusion in which all
employees are enabled to succeed.
But what does an authentic leader
look like, and how do we get there?
In this session, we will address the
definition of a leader and identify
the building blocks for becoming
an authentic leader – knowing
your strengths and weaknesses,
modeling leadership behaviors,
developing the art of asking good
questions, creating a vision of what
you want to accomplish personally
and organizationally, and speaking
boldly about what is important to
you.

transformational tool in a legacy
airline carrier
• enhance your ability to create
inclusive partnerships and foster
environments where people feel
safe to share ideas, voice concerns,

In this session we will explore the
topic of leadership from a global
perspective, looking at both the
challenges and opportunities that
arise from leading in a global
marketplace.
You will learn:
• the challenges and opportunities
associated with globalization
• how to effectively engage clients
and employees around the world
• how to build trust and
demonstrate authentic leadership
on a global scale
The most effective leaders are able
to find a balance between measuring
and developing their own leadership
attributes and focusing on the
results or metrics that impact the
bottom line. Without distinct
leadership attributes, results won’t
be sustained, and most certainly a
leader who focuses only on results
will eventually have a negative
impact on organizational culture.
In this interactive session
participants will examine how their
own personality, leadership style,
and day-to-day actions directly
impact not only their own personal
success, but also the success of their
organizations.
In this session you will:
• discover the fundamental
attributes of an effective leader
• identify critical drivers that impact
your leadership style
• examine your personal leadership
style and how it can impact daily
interactions
• the competencies needed to lead
in a global marketplace
• uncover the link between effective
leadership and inclusion

The Link Between Diversity
and Corporate Responsibility:
Lessons from Weyerhaeuser
Educational Disparity in the
U.S.: How Corporate America
Can Respond
Overall, diversity is an important
component of good governance and
good corporate citizenship. When
measured directly, diversity may
appear to have little impact on the
bottom line; however, a company’s
poor diversity performance can
result in significant liability for the
company, creating a ripple effect of
problems throughout the company,
and externally. This session will
discuss the current research and
trends, which support the nexus
between diversity, corporate
responsibility, and shareholder
value.
Corporate America has made
progress toward improving diversity
and cultural competence because
they can see the direct business
case for diversity in the workplace.
Even with such progress, most of
corporate America has NOT yet
made the connection between
the persistent poor health status
of community residents and the
profitability and financial success of
their organizations.
Weyerhaeuser understands there
is a clear link between diversity
and corporate responsibility. In
this session, they will discuss the
growing linkage of diversity to
citizenship - and how it is not only
becoming a critical component of
human resources efforts but has
broader implications as well.
The National Institute for Urban
School Improvement works with
the 100 largest urban school
districts in the nation to develop
inclusive, culturally responsive
educational systems to promote
educational equity, access, and
opportunity for culturally and
linguistically diverse students. We
use a systemic change model to
promote system wide school reform
efforts, and include working with
communities as part of that model.
In this session, we will focus on
the role of the corporate world in
inclusive school reform.
Participants will leave
this session with a better
understanding of:
• why diversity is an important issue
for corporations
• what role diversity plays in good
corporate citizenship
• what the benefits are of
corporations embracing corporate
responsibility
• how being a good corporate
citizen translates to better business
results

on corporate governance and ethics
issues. Her primary industry focus
is on the telecommunications and
technology industries. She also
conducts shareholder advocacy on key
corporate social responsibility issues,
such as board diversity.
12
Through this session, participants
will focus on community health
status, health care disparities, and
why it is important that corporate
America help reduce health
disparities.
This session will:
• demonstrate the existence and
implications of health care
disparities
• link the impact of health status
and health disparities to the
bottom-line
• build a business case for
corporations to improve access
to health care and reduce health
disparities
• review models for engaging
corporate America and its
executives in improving health
care disparities
KIM BYAS is the
regional executive with
the American Hospital
Association (AHA) in

in IL, IN MI, OH, and WI. In this
role, Mr. Byas ensures that the AHA
can respond effectively and quickly
on behalf of hospitals in a rapidly
changing environment through strong
grassroots legislative and political
mechanisms.
As diversity becomes more of
a global issue, leaders need to
understand the implications for
their businesses. Customers are
becoming more interested in their
suppliers’ workforce and diversity
strategies. Shareholders are raising
more direct questions about the
diversity of company leadership
and boards. Savvy companies
are developing strategies that
integrate diversity and inclusion
into outreach activities with their
customers, communities, and
sources of talent.
Through this session you
will learn:
• a greater understanding of the
business case behind diversity and
corporate citizenship
• an increased awareness of key
business drivers
• tools useful to leaders interested in
developing better strategies
• an understanding of the
connection between diversity,
affirmative action, and human
rights

Of the 54 million people with
disabilities in the U.S., some
are surely your employees and
customers. Through interactive
exercises, participants will explore
how best to create a comfortable
work environment for people
with disabilities. Attendees will
also examine models for creative,
reasonable accommodations for
people with disabilities.
This session is designed to increase
awareness of body size as a
“difference that makes a difference.”
Participants will review research
related to size issues, hear and share
first-hand stories about day-today realities, and take part in an
exercise that delves into the impact
biases and assumptions related to
body size in the workplace. Finally,
you will learn how to support an
environment where individuals are
respected for who they are and what
they offer.
There is more to diversity than
gender, race, and ethnicity.
Diversity in the workplace also
includes employees who are lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender
(LGBT), but these issues rarely get
discussed. This session will provide
an opportunity to focus on LGBT
workplace issues and to discuss the
importance of creating a safe and
comfortable working atmosphere.
Can a person be legally fired for
being LGBT? What is the cost of
hiding one’s sexual orientation?
These questions and others will be
answered as participants learn how
Fortune 500 companies include
LGBT employees in their diversity
efforts.
In this session, we will bring clarity
to our common interests, goals,
and future aspirations – then dive
into the separate and distinct ways
of viewing the path toward the
achievement of those goals through
the lens of the four generations
currently in the workforce. Each
generation has unique work ethics,
different perspectives on work,
distinct preferred ways of being
managed, idiosyncratic styles, and
unique ways of viewing such workworld issues as quality, service, and
showing up for work.
In this session you will learn:
• about the Americans with
Disabilities Act
• how to behave your way out of
uncomfortable situations with
people with disabilities
• how to create a friendly corporate
culture for disabled employees

such companies as JP Morgan Chase,
UBS Investment Bank, Shell Oil, The
Episcopal Church Center, and the
Museum of Modern Art.
As a result of this session
participants will:
• learn about the issues related to
body size in our workplaces
• understand the impact on
an individual’s success when
perception of the “right” look
supersedes skills, talents, and
abilities
• explore ways to include body
size as a dimension of diversity
that is addressed in our diversity
conversations

• an increased awareness of LGBT
workplace issues through a
series of interactive exercises and
personal sharing
• skills to assess the environment
for LGBT employees in your
organization
• specific ideas for developing

Industry-Specific Think Tanks are modeled much like Applied Learning Teams, but participants focus on industry-specific challenges and issues.
Unlike Applied Learning Teams, these teams are organized by industry segment and led by experts with direct sector experience.

Delivering Culturally Competent Care
For many healthcare organizations, providing competent care to a culturally
diverse population is no longer an option but a business imperative. The
delivery of culturally competent care requires a unified commitment from
doctors, nurses, other caregivers, and administrators. This customized learning
experience is provided to support diversity efforts in the healthcare industry
Discuss solutions and action steps to help you:
• benchmark “best practices” in the healthcare industry
• gain organization-wide buy-in from physicians, nurses, other caretakers, and
administrators
• create a culturally competent workforce and deliver culturally competent care
• conform to CLAS standards and work effectively with interpreters
• improve access to competent care among diverse populations
• understand disparities and clinical outcomes based upon diverse patients
• engage society and key stakeholders and meets as a learning team

THE ADVANCED PRACTITIONERS’ (AP) THINK TANK
A think tank is a group that provides advice and ideas on problems related to
policy or strategy. Successful think tanks involve experts and theorists from
many disciplines. This year, the AP Think Tank will bring senior diversity
practitioners together in a special way.
During the Summit, AP participants will identify the most pressing challenges
facing diversity practitioners. Using structured dialogue, participants will share
resources and strategies they are using to address these challenges. In addition,
there will be a private session where consultants will respond on the spot to
questions about the specific issues you have identified as challenging. Think of
it as a chance to receive an hour of free consulting from consultants who work
with all types of organizations worldwide.
Participants in the AP Think Tank will walk away with new tools and
resources, renewed energy and commitment plus strong relationships with
other senior leaders of diversity initiatives in organizations worldwide.
Following the Summit, the resources and strategies shared will be packaged
into a practical reference guide that can be used throughout the year to
navigate some of the most difficult diversity-related challenges.

POST-SUMMIT WORKSHOPS (Optional)
Wednesday, April 12, 2006 • 1:00PM – 5:00PM
Linking Diversity Management to Financial Performance
Creating accountability for diversity programs must be linked to the business
strategies. The primary concern of most executives at the C-Suite level is
finding ways to grow the top-line (increase revenues) or decrease the bottomline (cut costs). Any program that can help accomplish either of these will
immediately get the attention of the leadership in your organization, but this
attention will also result in accountability measures that track the Return on
Investment (ROI) of your diversity initiatives.
This workshop will provide fundamental tools to help your organization
quantify the ROI of their diversity and inclusion work. The primary emphasis
will be the quantitative and qualitative processes as well as metrics that
can assist organizations on this journey. We will take you through a step
by step process, including the use of fictitious company information that
allows participants a hands-on chance to make the calculations. Bring your
calculator and a willingness to ‘do’ the numbers. We will show you the road
map; you have to be willing to make
the trip!
In this in-depth workshop you will gain:
• a clearer picture of what you need to measure and how to hold people
accountable
• a better understanding of how to measure what matters while linking it to
earnings
• a demonstration of an enterprise wide web-based system to manage
diversity metrics
CRAIG B. CLAYTON, SR., is the founder and CEO of the Sp@rtacus
Analytics Group based in Houston, Texas, specializing in providing
organizations with analytical tools that measure the connection
between the ROI from managing diversity and the organization’s
bottom line. He also created the Center for Human Capital, which is
a Sp@rtacus Group company providing business-focused research and studies in
the field of human capital management. Since 1999, he has been the director and
diversity strategist with the University of Houston’s – International Institute for
Diversity located in the C.T. Bauer College of Business.
The Diversity Practitioner as Leader
In this session participants will enhance their ability to become leaders of
diversity initiatives within their respective organizations. We will explore
what it means to lead diversity initiatives in our places of work today, three
reasons why organizations are doing diversity (compliance, it’s the right thing
to do, its good business), and the pitfalls to making diversity work successful
(resistance, walking on egg shells, the need to be politically correct). Then we
will spend time learning the four keys to personal and organizational success,
Power, Privilege, Passion, and Purpose, and how they apply to you and your
diversity work.
By attending this workshop you will:
• become aware of your sphere of influence
• examine your personal position on diversity in relationship to other
initiatives within the organization
• explore methods for enrolling peers and management into the diversity
process
