How to tame
English fluency!
“WHY IS it that most of those who even have a master’s degree in
English find it difficult to express their thoughts, ideas and feelings
in fluent spoken English, though they do it without much difficulty
in written English?
“Prof. Kev Nair, an eminent scholar of international repute and
a renowned English language lexicographer, goes into this question
in depth and comes up with clear answers in Fluentzy, a series of
twenty definitive books on the subject authored by him. These 20

W
HAT IS IT that prevents most
educated people who write good
English from speaking it quite fluently? The culprit is a wrong impression:
They’re under the wrong impression that
the right way to speak English is to speak it
the way they write an essay or report.
And whenever they start speaking in English, they try to speak the way they write.
That is, they try to force written English
thro’ the medium of speech. Like trying to
force bricks thro’ a water pipe. Is there any
wonder they stumble, stammer & falter?
– THE HINDU.

international standard against
which advanced courses in
English speech production are
compared everywhere.”
– Genl. Knowledge Today.

Truly unique
“‘Fluentzy’... one of its kind in the
world.” – THE TIMES OF INDIA.
Result-oriented
“A no-nonsense course... A downto-earth approach... Highly

Pirated abroad!
“A Russian Internet Service Provider... has closed two websites
that were engaged in selling
pirated versions of the fluent

charging an exorbitant premium...”
– THE HINDU.
Prof. Kev Nair
World authority
“Perhaps more innovative in
method than Roget and more
modern in approach than Fowler,
Prof. Kev Nair is... one of the
foremost Indian scholars who
wield great influence on the
thinking of the English-educated
people around the world.”
– Genl. Knowledge Today.
Globally respected

35 countries; highly educated,
well-placed professionals turn to
him for help; students aspiring for
superior jobs find his experience
and guidance of great worth.”
– The New Indian Express
So here’s the 1st truth: Spoken English is
not written English said aloud. And nobody can speak English fluently if they try
to speak the way they write. Nobody.
So, to speak English fluently, you need a
set of tools that are wholly different from
the set of tools that help you write English.
Secret of the silver-tongued
So the very first thing you should do is
this: Acquire fluency-building knowledge &
skills. And whenever you speak, speak only
according to fluency-building knowledge &
skills — and not according to your written
English knowledge & skills.
And the great news is, this first step is
also the last step: Master fluency units and
specialized fluency strategies — and
whenever you start speaking in English,
your word clusters start flowing out .
Readily. And easily. Instead of just remain-
ing on the tip of your tongue.
This is the 2nd truth.
7 wrong methods
Self-study: Smart people’s
way to pro-like fluency
WHAT IS TRUE FLUENCY?
You can’t call yourself fluent just because
you can speak one-line English here and
there, can you?
You’re truly fluent only when you can
speak continuously. At length. By giving
supporting details, reasons, justifications,
and illustrative examples of situations and
events. Easily, clearly, confidently. Without
unwanted hesitations. That too, in newer &
newer situations. Even in situations you’ve
had no training in. Spontaneously. Without
There’s only one way to master the fluencyskill: Self-directed self-study. That is the only
way. No teacher-dependent method can
help. You should do independent study —
outside classrooms. Yes, outside. Teach
yourself. Without a teacher.
Yes. The fluency skill can only be mastered
directly. Thro’ self-effort. Without a
teacher coming between you and the learning process. Only then will the fluency skill
become your skill. And this is the 3rd truth.
The Fluentzy system makes this selfstudy quite easy. Easier than you think.

Why every home needs Fluentzy
•
WISE MOVE. Everyone for whom English is a second language is a victim of the “cart-before-the-horse”
problem! Yes, everyone. And so, every home must have a set of the Fluentzy series! Yes, every home.
Every language has two sides: The spoken
side and the written side. The right order of
learning these two sides is this: Learn the
spoken side first. And then you can use the
knowledge of the spoken side as a basis for
learning the written side. That’s how we all
learnt our mother tongue.
But what happened when you learnt English? Classrooms taught you the wrong side
first — the written side. And then asked you
to use the knowledge of this ‘wrong’ side to
produce the ‘right’ (spoken) side. Is there
any wonder true fluency has been eluding
even those who have a master’s?
of the communicative pressures under
which you speak in a real-life situation.
They’re wholly different from the kinds of
Why classrooms can’t make
you fluent
learning pressures or work-production pressures in a classroom.
In a classroom, what’s your aim? To produce work for display to an evaluator.
Right? To produce examples of language.
And not to produce language as part of an
Why? First of all, the focus of classroom
work and the focus of fluency work are not
the same, but different. Second, just think
Treasured

“Fluentzy... The finest contribution English language has
ever received from outside an
English-speaking country.”
– The New Indian Express.
Earliest pioneer
“Think English, Speak English — Fluentzy!”

1971, and the results... led him
to new discoveries... ”
— and throws up new speech-composition problems. And fluency is your ability
to navigate these twists and turns. And to
keep up a steady flow of speech.
So the fluency skill is a unique skill. The
only one of its kind... And so you can’t learn
it in the same way as you learn other skills —
computer skills, or mathematics or
swimming. Fluency skill needs a different
approach. A completely different approach.
Mind you, conventional methods are only
language-learning tools. And not fluencybuilding tools. And so they’re not capable
of helping you master fluency units and
fluency strategies. This may sound incredible at first. But this is a fact.
So understand this: Classroom training
cannot make you fluent in speech. • Nor
can e-learning. • Nor audio cassettes/CDs.
• Nor videos. • Nor language laboratories.
• Nor ready-made sentences. • Nor learning done thro’ your mother tongue.
Of course, some of these methods may
help you utter one-line English here and
there: One-line statements. One-line
questions. One-line replies. One-line
instructions. In a few stereotyped
situations. But mind you, true fluency is
something else.
–
ongoing communicative process. In a classroom, your aim is to demonstrate your
knowledge of theoretical usage. And not to
use language to communicate.
But in a real-life situation, that won’t
do. Here you have to produce language as
part of an ongoing communicative process.
And communicate. Talk to people as one
individual to another. By organizing your
language into ‘here-and-now communication units’. By putting your language to actual use. Real-time use. Exploratorily. Manipulatively. By going on meeting the everfluctuating communicative needs. By bending and twisting and manipulating and
juggling with language units. By dealing
with the real-life communicative pressures.
On the spot. Only specialized fluency
work can give you this ability. Fluency work
outside classrooms.

How to strengthen your fluency

– The New Indian Express.
VERY SKILL can be strengthened by
practising the ‘corresponding acts’.
Walking by walking. Running by running. From this, many people jump to conclusions and wonder: Can’t the skill of spontaneous speech also be strengthened similarly — thro’ speech practice?
Pioneer fluency

Achieve verbal balance &
cross the fluency threshold
“Prof. Kev Nair is regarded the
world over as the father of fluency
lexicography... Fluency lexicography came into existence as a
separate branch of dictionary
writing with the publication of
Prof. Nair’s Dictionary of Active
Fluency Combinations in 1986.”
Mind you, there’s a flaw in the above line of
thinking. It forgets a basic truth: You’ll not
be able to practise a skill till the germ of
that skill has taken root in you. And till
you’ve crossed that skill’s threshold — the
level at which that skill starts to happen.
For example, you won’t be able to
strengthen walking by walking till you’ve
crossed the walking threshold. You won’t be
able to practice the skill of cycling till
you’ve crossed the cycling threshold.
In the same way, you won’t be able to
strengthen your skill of speaking thro’ speech
practice — till you’ve crossed the fluency
threshold: That is, till you can carry on
the process of speaking steadily (though
slowly) — to a minimal extent. By using
fluency-maintaining strategies and holding
your own against fluency-blocking factors
— factors that keep trying to throw you,
and the flow of your speech, off balance.

Beware of False Fluency!
Just think! Suppose that a few people who
are not fluent in English get together and
start doing some kind of speech practice —
in order to achieve fluency in English...
What kind of English will they be able to
do the speech practice in? Only in broken
English. Right? (Because they can’t speak
fluent English!). And suppose they carry on

with this kind of speech practice thro’ broken English for 3 months or more... Won’t
broken English become their habit?
Rather than fluent English?
Teacher can help only with
accuracy — Not fluency...
Mind you, even a teacher’s presence cannot
improve the situation. No, it can’t. Why?
Because a teacher can notice and correct
only ‘externally noticeable’ mistakes: Mistakes of grammar, usage, vocabulary, etc.
But remember this: We’re speaking about
people who know English — very well or
reasonably well. Don’t they already have a
good command of grammar and usage?
And don’t they have a reasonable (or even
a wide) vocabulary? Even then, don’t most
of them find it hard to be truly fluent?
So ‘externally noticeable’ mistakes are
not the real reason that blocks fluency. The
real reason is this: Internal speech processing difficulties. And internal speech composition problems. Mistakes, difficulties and
problems that happen when your mind tries
to compose speech before its delivery. When
your mind tries to manipulate the semantic
and syntactic resources of the English language — to process information. And to
formulate speech out of that information.
And to bring it up for delivery.
Mind you, a teacher or anyone else will
not be able to notice these internal mistakes
and problems. Or the pre-delivery process.
No, they can’t, because these things happen
inside your mind. You are the only person
who’ll be able to be aware of them — and
to cope with them on the spot.
That’s why if you want to achieve
true fluency, you must become a
teacher to yourself. Yes, you must.
Fluency Nucleus: The Inexhaustible fluency source
Mind you, true fluency is not the speed of
delivery of speech. No, it isn’t. It’s really the
flow with which the things you want to deliver come out of your heart and mind — in
‘readily deliverable’ speech units.
And true fluent English is not a terrible
struggle: A sentence-based speech-production struggle. No, it isn’t. It’s something
wholly different. Something whose mark is
actually effortlessness. Fluent English is the
ready flow of speech units: A steady stream
of word clusters flowing out easily... From
something called the fluency nucleus.
And what the Fluentzy system does is this:
To help you do things, so the fluency nucleus
starts growing inside you. Once that
happens, you’re on your way to achieving
higher and higher levels of fluency.
And from then on, even group
speech practice and audio-video sessions can prove useful. But mind you,
only from then on — and not till then.
Now, how do the Fluentzy
books help you to be fluent?
“WALKING TALL”
1). These self-study books tell you
how to compose your speech and
speak at the same time. On your
feet. Against the pressure of time.
2). They help you to break free of
h-e-s-i-t-a-t-i-o-n-s. And to deal with
on-the-spot speech-composition difficulties. And speech-processing difficulties. And to speak on... In free
flowing English. About your ideas,
thoughts & feelings.
3). They help you to achieve the
ability to say something appropriate in all the everyday situations
you face in your social and career
life, so that you won’t be at a loss
for words in these situations.
4). They help you to achieve adequate control over fluency-producing vocabulary and other resources,
so you can manipulate them and
juggle with them at will — orally.
And speak English spontaneously.
Describe, explain or narrate things.
Without prior planning. Or preparation. Whether you’re having a chat
or a serious conversation. Or a public
discussion. Or making a presentation. Or speaking at a job interview
— or media interview. Or negotiating. Or arguing. Or making a speech
in public.
5). They help you to train your organs of speech. And to get those organs to work like those of a native
speaker of English. And to help you
