Introduction Introduction The origin of roulette is not very clear. Whilst historians cannot agree on the origins of the game, many believe it was originally invented by the Chinese, and brought into Europe by Dominican Monks who were trading with the Chinese. The French however, mainly believe it was invented by Blaise Pascal, a 17th Century French mathematician. The word "roulette" is derived from a French word meaning a small wheel. The roulette wheel was made popular during the late 18th century when the ruler of Monaco at the time, Prince Charles, introduced gambling to Monaco to aid with the region’s economic growth. In 1842, two Frenchmen, Francois and Louis Blanc, invented the single "0" roulette game. This is the European roulette wheel of today. Although this version found its way to America, it was not accepted there, as the casinos favoured the two zero (00) wheel for its higher casino edge. The advent of the internet allowed the game to flourish online, and today there are thousands of online casinos making it easy for everyone to have access to the game. Centuries of roulette playing has aided in the development of many roulette systems. Some of the main systems will be covered in this book. However, as the title of the book suggests, the main value of this book for you the reader will be system for winning consistently whilst playing online roulette. 1 Types of Roulette Games Chapter 1 x Types of Roulette Games 3 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition What is new in this 2nd edition? Thanks to all of you who have helped make the 1st Edition such a success. In this edition of “How to win at online roulette”, you are introduced to the “Creep”, a new personality trait to watch out for. The errors in the previous versions’ stake lists have been corrected. The list of other books and products produced by the author has been replaced by relevant gambling related books and gambling systems. An appendix has been added, which lists casinos where the systems discussed in this book can be used. Types Of Roulette Games There are two types of roulette games. These are the American and European roulette games, which will now be explained. American Roulette Wheel The American roulette wheel contains thirty-eight numbers: 0, 00, and 1, through to 36. Having two zeros (0 and 00), gives the house a 5.26% advantage. In other words, for every $100 a gambler bets, the house will make $5.26 in profit. This percentage is called the house edge. The American house edge is higher than the European house edge, which we will look at next. European Roulette Wheel The European roulette wheel contains thirty-seven numbers: zero and 1, through to 36. Having one zero (0), gives the house a 2.70% advantage. In other words, for every $100 a gambler bets, the house will make $2.70 in profit. 4 Types of Roulette Games Differences Between The Two Roulette Games Chip Colour The American casinos use different coloured chips per player, whilst European casinos generally use the coloured chips for all players. This can be confusing for European players, especially when the table is busy with many players. Croupier A roulette dealer (usually referred to as "croupier") spins the wheel counter clockwise and releases what is usually a plastic ball along the track that runs along the top of the wheel's cavity. American casino croupiers use their hands and arms to sweep in the loosing chips, whilst European casino croupiers use a long stick, ending in a small rake. The croupier collects all losses and pays out all winnings. The croupier will also exchange cash for chips, but does not usually do the reverse in most casinos. To get your chips converted back into cash, you need to go to the secure and protected cash counter. Zero Rules The rules for when a ball lands on a zero differ between the American and European casinos. In the American casinos, you loose if you place an outside bet and the ball lands on zero. In the European casinos, if zero is landed, you can leave your chips on the table until you either loose or win on a non-zero spin. You can also choose to surrender half your stake if the ball lands on a zero. This is the Surrender rule, which will be covered along with the En Prison rule in more detail, later. 5 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition Table Layout There are three roulette table layouts, American, European, and French. Let us look at their various differences. American Table The American roulette table is laid out as illustrated in Figure 1: American Roulette Table Layout, with the single zero and double zeros sitting side by side at the top of the table. Figure 1: American Roulette Table Layout 6 Types of Roulette Games European Table The European roulette table is similar in design to the American, with the only difference being a single zero at the top of the table. See Figure 2: European Roulette Table Layout. Figure 2: European Roulette Table Layout 7 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition French Roulette Table Layout The table layout on the French version of roulette is different from both the European and American roulette tables, as shown in Figure 3: French Roulette Table Layout. The main difference is in the position of the side bets (outside bets). The side bets on the French table are split in two, and run along both sides of the table layout. Each side bet is given its French name, and sometimes, also its English translation underneath. Figure 3: French Roulette Table Layout 8 Types of Roulette Games The Roulette Wheel Let us take a closer look at the roulette wheel. The wheel weighs upwards of a hundred pounds, at nearly three feet in diameter. It has numbers distributed around it as illustrated in Figure 4: American Roulette Wheel Layout, Figure 5: European Roulette Wheel Layout, and Figure 6: European Roulette Wheel (L) And American Routine Wheel (R). Each number on the wheel has a pocket big enough for a small ball to sit inside. The wheel is normally made of wood and has three or four central handles for spinning, although most croupiers use the side of the wheel to spin it. After spinning the wheel, the croupier spins the small ball counter to the direction of the wheel, but inside the rim of the wheel. As the wheel slows, the plastic ball falls towards the centre of the wheel and lands and settles on one of the number pockets. 9 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition Figure 4: American Roulette Wheel Layout 10 Types of Roulette Games Figure 5: European Roulette Wheel Layout 11 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition Figure 6: European Roulette Wheel (L) And American Routine Wheel (R) The wheel is so designed as to evenly distribute high, low, red, black, even, and odd numbers around the circle. You will note that the American wheel has the single zero and double zero in directly opposite sides, whilst the European wheel has only a single zero. This even distribution of numbers on the roulette wheel design is standard within the industry. 12 How to play Roulette Chapter 2 x x How to play roulette Types of bets 13 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition How To Play Roulette After purchasing your chips from the croupier, you can start to place them on the desired positions on the table, in an attempt to predict where the ball will land after the wheel is spun and the ball comes to a stop. Once all chips are placed on the table and the bets are made, the dealer spins the roulette wheel, while spinning the ball in the opposite direction inside the roulette wheel. Players are allowed to continue placing their bets during the spin until the dealer says, "No more bets.” When the wheel slows down and the ball drops into one of the numbered slots, the dealer places a marker on the winning number on the roulette table. If your bet won, the croupier would pay you in chips. If you lost, your chips would be collected and kept by the casino. Roulette Rules And Table Etiquette Roulette is an uncomplicated game; however, you need to know what you are doing, and the consequences before you place a complex bet. This section not only covers the roulette rules, but also gives advice on casino and roulette etiquette. Inside Bet An inside bet is a bet on any number or set of numbers, on the roulette table. Inside bets include: 5-number bets, 6-number bets, corner bets, split bets, straight bets, and trio bets. See the illustration below in Figure 7: Outside And Inside Bet Layout. 14 How to play Roulette Outside Bet An outside bet is a bet on red, black, odd, even, high (19 to 36), and low numbers (1 to 18). Outside bets include the following type of bets: column, dozen, even, odd, high, low, red, and black bets. See Figure 7: Outside And Inside Bet Layout. Figure 7: Outside And Inside Bet Layout Table Minimum In roulette, there is a minimum bet rule. This rule dictates the minimum amount you can bet on outside bets, and the minimum total your inside bets must amount to. Therefore, if the table minimum is $5, you can place $5 outside bets, and place inside bets amounting to a minimum of $5, i.e. five $1 bets on numbers. Chips In North America, roulette chips are normally different from normal casino chips, and require you buying and exchanging them for normal casino chips or cash. Each player is assigned different coloured chips. This allows the dealer to differentiate bets and match them to the correct players. 15 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition When buying chips from the dealer, you will be required to give some indication as to the denomination of chips you require. For a $5 minimum table, casinos will have a minimum value of $1 on roulette chips. Depending on how you wish to distribute bets, you can decide to go for low denominations or higher ones. The actual roulette chips will not be marked with a value. The denomination you selected when you purchased your chips will be noted by the croupier or dealer. (The dealer keeps track of this by associating the amount and colour with a “lamer”). Pace Of Roulette Roulette is a slow-paced game due to the way the bets are placed, the wheel is spun, and how the winnings are paid out. Because of this, you will have plenty of time to place your bets before the croupier waves his/her hands over the table saying, “No more bets.” Until this action or call is made, you can continue to place your bets, and even place announces bets (explained in the Announces Bets section later) by calling them to the croupier. You can also cover the same numbers that other players are covering on the table. Once the ball has settled in a pocket, the croupier will call out the winning number, and place a marker on that number's spot on the table layout. The croupier will do this using a rake1 or his/her hands2. After the dealer sweeps the chips off the table and settles all winnings, he/she will shout, “Place your bets.” Then, and only then, can you again place your bet(s). 1 European casinos generally use a rake to sweep chips on the roulette table American casinos generally use hands and arms to sweep roulette chips from the table. 2 16 How to play Roulette Types Of Bets The attraction of roulette is mainly due to its reward system. Each place on the table has different returns on winnings. We will now examine the different types of bets, and how to place them. Simple Bets For a more in-depth, explanation of the bets listed in Table 1: Bet Payout Table, see the Glossary. You can place your chips on any number or set of numbers, place outside bets on odd, even, black, red, low, high, column, or dozen numbers. These bets require the use of the announces racetrack, illustrated in Figure 9: Announces Racetrack. 17 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition Announces Bets The French table has a mechanism for placing the so-called announces bets (call bets), for which there are no dedicated fields on the table layout. They are announced to the dealer, who then places the required amount of chips on the corresponding fields on the announces racetrack (see Figure 9: Announces Racetrack). There are two different types of announces bets - Neighbours and Arcs ("Voisins de Zero," "Orphelins" (Orphans), and "Tier"). See Figure 8: Wheel Track Divided Into Four Areas. The rest of the numbers return 2:1 for any wins. Finales en plein This type of bet aims to bet on all numbers that have the same end number. There are ten options to this bet. These options are illustrated in Table 14: The Finales En Plein Bet. Final Zero Final 1 Final 2 Final 3 Final 4 0, 10, 20, 30 1, 11, 21, 31 2, 12, 22, 32 3, 13, 23, 33 Final 5 Final 6 Final 7 Final 8 4, 14, 24, 34 Final 9 5, 15, 25, 35 6, 16, 26, 36 7, 17, 27 8, 18, 28 9, 19, 29 Table 14: The Finales En Plein Bet For example, "final 5" means a bet on the numbers 5, 15, 25, and 35. The payout on winnings for this bet is illustrated in Table 15: The Finales En Plein Bet Payout. 25 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition Bet Option Final 7,8 and 9 Final 0,1,2,3,4,5, and 6 The player will get (Payoff) 35 units (35:1) + 1 bet unit 35 units (35:1) + 1 bet units True profit 35 + 1 - 3 = 32 units 35 + 1 – 4 = 31 units Table 15: The Finales En Plein Bet Payout The efficiency is 32:3 or 31:4, depending on the numbers in the final bet. Finales a cheval Another type of Finales bet is the Finale Cheval, where you use as many splits (cheval) as possible to cover numbers with the same last digit. For example, "finales 6/7" means a bet on the numbers 6, 7, 16/17, 26/27, and 36. Neighbour bet This bet allows you to place bets on a number, and six of its neighbours on the wheel (three on either side of the number). For instance, the number 8 has 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, and 5 as neighbours (8 is in the middle). See the roulette wheel diagrams in Figure 4: American Roulette Wheel Layout and Figure 5: European Roulette Wheel Layout. A neighbour bet on 8 would be called "8 and the three." The true payout will be as follows: 35 + 1 - 7 = 29 units, with an efficiency of 29:7. 26 Real life Casino Roulette Strategies Chapter 3 x x Real Life Casino Roulette Strategies Online Roulette 27 How To Win At Online Roulette, 2nd Edition Real Life Casino Roulette Strategies Although a simple game, finding and applying a successful roulette system is almost impossible. This is due to human greed, as well as some flaws in most systems. Even the systems that work often end up loosing if they are used for long periods in a casino. The maths behind roulette is quite straightforward. Consequently, many people have proposed a roulette strategy that attempts to exploit this simplicity. The problem with trying to develop a proper roulette strategy is that all of the bets on the table work out to equal the same house edge of 5.25% (on American tables). The only exception to this rule is the five-number bet, which has an even worse edge of 7.29%! Improving Your Chances Of Winning So what do I suggest for a real life casino roulette strategy? It is simply to seek to increase your edge by utilising casino rules. You will need to understand the various aspects that affect house edges to your advantage, and use them. In a game as rigid and non-interactive as roulette, you can do little as a player to lower the house edge, but you can be on the lookout for casinos that offer special rules that accomplish the same thing. Surrender The first rule you should look for in the casino is called Surrender, which should not be confused with the similar term used in the game of blackjack. This rule only applies to evenmoney outside bets. These include red, black, odd, even, high and low number bets. If the ball lands on a 0 or 00, you only lose half of your bet, instead of all of it. As it is the 0 and 00 that ramp the house edge up so much in American roulette, Surrender will in effect reduce this house edge down to 2.63%. Single zero roulette wheels 28 Real life Casino Roulette Strategies rarely offer Surrender but you can find Surrender in some American casinos, and a few other places in the world. Type Of Table We have already looked at the different types of roulette tables. Because the European roulette game offers a lower house edge (2.70%) to its American counterpart (5.25%), you would be wise to consider playing single zero roulette, as opposed to double zero roulette. En Prison This rule is popular in European casinos. It concerns evenmoney outside bets. If you place such a bet and the ball falls in the zero pocket at a casino that offers En Prison, you would have the option to leave your bet on the table for another spin (or as many spins as are necessary to produce a non zero result). If you do win on the next spin, you simply have your stake returned without any winnings. This rule has the advantage of lowering the house edge even further to 1.35%. If you do not live in Europe, or you have no casinos near you that offer this rule, then you may seek an online casino that will provide this rule.
