Wearing the charms and eccentricities of Wes
Anderson on its sleeve, THE BROTHERS BLOOM is
a much anticipated second feature from Rian
Johnson (BRICK). Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo
pair up as the dysfunctional Bloom brothers, an
orphaned sibling outfit who lay claim to being
the best conmen in the world. As the kings of their
game, the brothers rejoice in leading a dishonest
life, swindling the rich with their dashing charm and
guile. But Bloom, growing restless and itching with
discontentment, shies away from the fraudulent
lifestyle. Until, that is, Stephen, the elder of the two,
convinces him to take on one last job.
Winterbottom’s sublime and shocking film noir is
based on American crime writer Jim Thompson’s
1952 novel of the same name. Affleck plays a
small town deputy sheriff who polices the streets
of his small town with a crocodile smile and the
dead eyes of an insane killer. The film makes a
brutal statement about the corruption of the
human soul, but it is also a powerful and arresting
piece of genre-defying cinema. Winterbottom
is one of the few directors with the intelligence,
vision and bravery to pull it off, which he does with
aplomb in his most provocative work to date.

BHUTTO charts the tumultuous life and violent
death of two-time Pakistani Prime Minster Benazir
Bhutto. As beloved by the people of her country
as she was reviled by the nation’s military
establishment and male-dominated ruling class,
Bhutto remains a symbolic metaphor for the fight
between terrorism and moderation being played
out on the world stage today. Two years after
her murder, this fascinating documentary uses
archived news clips and interviews with Bhutto’s
family, allies and even opponents. BHUTTO is, in
many ways, a history of Pakistan itself, told through
the lens of the Bhutto family’s politics.
A funny and grown-up comedy, GREENBERG
stars Ben Stiller in his juiciest role yet as the single,
forty-ish failed musician Roger Greenberg, who,
newly released from a mental institution after a
breakdown, goes off to Los Angeles to house-sit
in his successful brother’s Hollywood home. Once
there, Greenberg tries to reconnect with old friends
but finds himself spending an increasing amount
of time with his brother’s assistant Florence, also
something of a lost soul. Selfish and neurotic, Roger
is a brilliant invention and as he navigates LA and
his personal relationships it is impossible not to be
swept along in the current of his neuroses.

adaptation of Robert Harris’ tense political thriller.
Brosnan stars as Adam Lang, a former British
Prime Minister (a thinly veiled Tony Blair) accused
of war crimes, whose resignation prompts an
autobiography. He commissions a ghost-writer
aptly named The Ghost to complete his memoirs
but as The Ghost digs deeper in order to deliver
the finished autobiography on time, he becomes
wrapped up in a perilous game of political spin

This astonishing film tells the secret true story of
Italian dictator Mussolini and the secret lover and
son whom he covered up. The film follows Ida, one
of Mussolini’s secret lovers, who gave up everything
for Il Duce when he was a rising star in the
Socialist movement. Although she bore him a son,
Mussolini’s lust for power sees him switch political,
religious and romantic allegiances overnight. He
does his best to cover up the relationship, locking
Ida in an asylum and his son in an institution, but
Ida isn’t prepared to give up without a fight.

and pollution, DIRTY OIL takes us deep behind
the scenes into the strip-mined world of Alberta,

in 2009. After the death of his father, Aaron
Fleishman inherits the family kosher butcher’s
shop. When a young Yeshiva student named
Ezri arrives on the scene, Aaron finds himself
inexplicably drawn to the boy and pursues a
relationship that will see him ostracised by the
denouncing townspeople. Tabakman’s feature
debut is a dark yet delicate morality tale that
juxtaposes strict religious values with a forbidden
sexual yearning.
The Paris Opera Ballet is one of the world’s
great ballet companies. LA DANSE is a window
into their world. The film immediately draws us
into the rehearsals and shows preparations for
performances of seven ballets, including The
Nutcracker by Rudold Nureyev and Medea
by Angelin Preljocaj. It is a testament to both
Wiseman’s love of dance and the respect of
the Opera that he was allowed full access to

administration offices to the costumers department,

The legendary Billy Bragg will visit Leeds’ Hyde
Park Picture House this July with an inspiring
documentary about a scheme that brings
musicians and instruments to prisons in the
UK. BREAKING ROCKS tells the story of Bragg’s
independent initiative Jail Guitar Doors, which
aims to provide instruments to those who are using
music as a means of achieving the rehabilitation
of prison inmates. Bragg will answer questions
about the film and the initiative alongside director
Alan Miles, after which audiences will be treated
to performances from Bragg and Jail Guitar Doors
artists including Jonny Neesom and Leon Walker.

A quarter of British ex-soldiers sleep rough after they
leave the forces. This is an impressionistic portrait of
the emotional and physical aftermath of war, seen
through the eyes of Stuart Griffiths, an ex-soldier
made homeless after returning to civvy street,
now a family man and renowned professional
photographer. ISOLATION’s elegant crafting
gives a poetic backdrop to the quiet dignity and
forbearance of men whose lives are in some ways
wrecked, but who bravely take what the world
deals them.
Director Luke Seomore will perform the film’s score
live with musicians Michael Garrad
and David Stephens.

Documentary and performance
This is a wonderful grass roots film sensitively
assembled by KC Bull about the life of her father,
the pioneering psychedelic folk musician Sandy
Bull. The documentary centres on Bull’s early career
zooming around with Hunter S. Thompson before
becoming a cult hero to a generation of musicians
and artists. K.C. also reviles other members of her
intriguing family including her grandmother, a New
Jersey banking heiress turned jazz harpist, seen in
the film busking in subways with cutlery-playing
cohort ‘Mr Spoons’.
After the screening there with be a short musical
performance by Chris Hladowski playing fuzzed
up psychedelic Bouzouki in homage to the great
Sandy Bull.
