university
How to:
Choose a University
Choosing an institution of higher education and a field of study is probably one
of the important decisions an individual
can make.
For a high school senior
or graduate, the experience of choosing a
university is a daunting task. Great care
and planning must be taken in order for
the process and the experience to be as
smooth as possible.
As a graduate of high school education, one of the first priorities is find a university that caters towards the needs and
expectations of the individual. For example, do you prefer a small intimate environment or a place teeming with people?
Your answer to this question determines
whether you prefer a big state school or a
university with a smaller population, like a
liberal arts school.
Another criterion to consider is the
academic strengths of each individual
school. What is the school known for academically? Are they known for the areas
of your interest? Is it possible to pursue
more than one field of interest?
Each school has a strength in some
field, be it the sciences or the humanities.
June 2011
If the school is strong in your field of
interest, then the opportunities for conferences, internships and possible employment in your field is higher.
In addition to a strong program in
your field of study, there should be plenty
of options to pursue other interests as
well. At some universities, the option of
adding a minor or an additional major is a
common option because of the broad curriculum.
For example, colleges and universities
with a specialization in liberal arts regularly demand their students to pursue a
broad curriculum, so elective classes are
common.
Also, many students find that taking a
full course load of just classes of their specialization to be a stressful endeavor.
Therefore elective classes are useful in
rounding out one's course load.
Another thing to consider that many
new high school graduates headed
towards university don't necessarily consider are alumni connections. Alumni are
very useful in making contacts not only
for internships, but also for employment
after university.
Alumni can also provide insight into
your field of study and how your degree
can be useful after graduation in the
employment market and not just academia.
However, students with commitments
outside of school or those who don't have
a desire to be on a campus for a class
should consider online courses. Online
courses provide the advantages of working
at a faster pace than the traditional university class.
Online classes can be more challenging academically, if careful attention is not
paid to time management.
Tuition cost is an important factor for
considering any college or university. The
majority of college students receive some
form of financial aid. Financial aid packages are based on a university’s analysis of
student need as determined by processing
the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA may be
obtained from high school counselors, the
university to which you are applying, or
can be completed online at
A Leavenworth Times Publication
www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students may qualify
for federal grants, loans, or work-study
jobs.
Most schools offer scholarships to
those who qualify and flexible payment
plans.
Another factor that many students
consider when choosing a university is the
type of social activities. Some universities
are known for their Greek life. If you are
interested in joining a sorority or fraternity, selecting a school with a strong Greek
system should be a priority.
However, many students opt out of
Greek life so a school with strong
extracurriculars is something to look for
as well. Although the main aspect of a
university is to learn, there is still some
free time to take up an extra activity like a
club or an intramural sport.
If you like sports, a strong sports program, or a school that has a lot of pride in
their sports activities such as football or
basketball is something to look for as well.
Overall, choosing the right university
can be difficult, but the experience of a
lifetime is worth the work.

auto body
How to:
Choose an Auto Body Shop
Your car, van, SUV, or truck is one of
the most important things to your ever
day life.
It is there for the transportation of
you and your loved ones, keeps your
family safe on the road, and it even
gives you a unique way to express yourself. It is important that you do everything you can to keep your vehicle in
the best shape possible, especially if
something unexpected happens.
There are some people out there who
are mechanically inclined and can take
care of most of their car's issues on their
own. You may even have a favorite
mechanic for changing the oil and belts,
or even doing major maintenance under
the hood.
However, it is just as important to
know what you are going to do for your
car or truck if it is ever in an accident.
Even if you are an extremely careful
driver, following the rules and obeying
the speed limit, there are still other people out there who are not. Accidents
happen every day, and not everyone on
the road is being extra careful.
If you are ever in an accident, even if
it is a fender bender that does not seem
to have done much damage, it can still
cause lots of problems and annoyance.
If you have a trustworthy auto body
shop that does quality work, they can
help make the situation go by with
fewer troubles, and possibly even save
you money in the long run.
If you do not already have an auto
body shop that you know and trust, it
can be very helpful to get advice from
your friends and neighbors who live
nearby. Someone you know has likely
already dealt with some of the auto
body shops in your area and can tell you
about their experiences, whether they
are good or bad.
Once you have a couple of recommen-
dations, you can use the Internet to find
out even more about the shops you are
thinking of.
Doing an Internet search can be
great, not only because you may be able
to find the auto body shop's Web site
which should tell you a bit about their
practices, but you may also be able to
find out about other people's experiences.
If you find a lot of negative feedback
about one of the shops you are thinking
of, it is likely a good idea to pick a different one. Also, if you can't get any recommendations from your friends and
family, the Internet is a great place to
start your search.
Once you have found a few shops that
look promising, it is time to hop on the
phone. Call around to the shops you are
thinking of, and describe that problem
or even the accident to the person you
speak with.
If you are paying attention, you might
be able to tell if they feel optimistic
about the job, or if they seem less than
enthusiastic. Some shops are very busy,
and if you pick one that is not happy
about doing your work, you may not be
getting the best deal or work on what
you need.
If it seems like the shop is interested
and glad to have your business, you will
need to get a price quote. It may be
hard for them to guess at the price
before they see the car, but they can still
give you an idea of what you may be
paying.
Write down the quotes you get from
all of the different shops, and then get
ready to head out and go see the shops
for yourself.
When at the shop, make sure to
check for certification, guarantees, and
prices. You will need to make you decision based on all of these things.

used car
How to:
Choose a Used Car Dealer
Finding a reliable used car dealer
can be a exhausting and difficult search.
With thousands of dollars of your
money at stake, it is in the buyer’s best
interest to take the time to look into the
market and find a retailer that best
suits his or her needs.
The used car industry has a reputation of being rife with lemons, bad deals
and shady businessmen, so a little
research into the market can go a long
way in saving some cash.
The best reason to buy a used car
from a retailer as opposed to a private
party is pretty simple: the retailer can
offer extras and warranties that an individual cannot, guaranteeing that your
vehicle is mechanically sound and offering service or a replacement if it is not.
The best place to start is with your
friends and family. People who have
bought used cars from a dealer often
know the best place to start looking, as
well as who to stay away from.
These experiences can be very useful
in finding a retailer who will fulfill their
obligation to provide a quality vehicle
and excellent customer service to boot.
A few questions to ask these people
with previous car buying experience
include the quality and price of the
vehicle they purchased, the warranty
offered, and whether or not the terms of
the sale were clearly laid out at the time
of purchase.
If a truly phenomenal experience
was had, it’s a good idea to get the name
of the person who actually sold the car,
and try to deal with that person only.
Usually if you are sent to a dealership
on referral, the retailer will happily provide you with the services of a recommended salesman.
There are two other sources that can
be useful in ruling out potential “lemon
dealers.” The Better Business Bureau
and the state attorney general both keep
records of dealerships and complaints
or lawsuits filed against them. This
won’t help you find a good dealer, but it
will help you rule out dealers you might
not want to do business with.
Many people who buy used cars say
that the best place to find a good deal
with a proper warranty is from the
manufacturer dealership. The advantage of this is that manufacturer’s dealership will be able to offer warranties
and factory certifications on their vehicles.
While other used car dealers can offer
warranties, very few besides manufacturer-endorsed dealerships will be able
to offer a factory certification.
This could go a long way toward saving money in repairs or the need for
third-party warranties. The new dealership may charge a slightly higher price,
but there are some valid reasons for
this.
Their technicians are used to working
on vehicles of their brand, and in many
cases are trained by the factories themselves to service their cars. Their prices
are usually higher, though — in some
cases significantly more expensive — so
you need to balance your needs with
your
budget.
Don’t be afraid to bring your own
mechanic or even a mechanically
inclined friend.
People who deal with cars on a regular
basis will be able to notice and diagnose
issues that you might not even see at
first. A reputable dealer will have no
problem submitting a used car to
inspection by a mechanic.
By educating yourself as to what
you’re looking for you can insure that
your used car will remain functional off
the lot for years to come.

maternity
How to:
Choose the Best Maternity Care
Pregnancy comes with enough anxieties without having to worry about if
you have selected the right provider for
care throughout your term, delivery and
postpartum recovery.
If you planned your pregnancy, you
probably already started looking for
care as well as handling the other needs
that come with having a baby, such as a
car seat.
However, if your pregnancy caught
you by surprise, it is important to find
maternity care suited to you as quickly
as possible.
The average cost of having a baby is
$6,000 to $12,000. Expenses will go up
if there are complications such as needing neonatal intensive care from giving
birth to a preterm child.
Learn which practitioners your
insurance will cover and what type of
care will be paid for. If you have no
insurance, check with social services in
your state because Medicaid may be
provided for expectant mothers.
Costs can increase dramatically if
you are placed under high-risk care or
need multiple ultrasounds, specialists or
fetal testing to ensure the baby is developing properly. If you can find a service
that offers most or all of these services
in one area, then much stress will be
reduced.
After figuring out who your insurance will cover, the next decision is to
determine who will deliver your baby.
This is a person with whom you will
want to feel comfortable because you
will see this person frequently before
delivery, giving you instructions on
what you need to do to care for your
health as well as that of your unborn
infant.
Most new parents are only familiar
with obstetricians because they are doctors and gynecologists known as
OB/Gyns. They are usually necessary
for surgical procedures such as a C-section or high risk pregnancies. The
obstetrician tends to focus primarily on
the baby’s development and the procedure to get the baby here.
Women who have high-risk pregnancies, anticipate wanting medication or
like the idea of giving birth in a hospital
tend to choose the obstetrician.
Sometimes, the mother’s family doctor
may be able to deliver the baby, which
means the mother can be more comfortable because she already knows him
or her.
Other factors to consider are the
gender of the care provider. Where you
wish to deliver is important to discuss
to be sure the provider can be covered
at the location.
Most obstetricians must deliver at a
hospital in case of complications, so be
sure to choose the hospital they can
attend.
Your care provider should include
you in the decisions being made for
your care.
If you do not feel comfortable taking
certain prescribed medications or participating in suggested procedures (such
as amniocentesis), you should be permitted to speak up and not feel pressured or forced into something you do
not support.
Discuss your birth plan with your
provider ahead of time to make sure
your requests can be accomondated as
much as possible during delivery.
Ask questions to make an informed
decision. Get information on what to
expect.
Remember, your health and your
baby’s health are what are most important.

audiologist
How to:
Choose an Audiologist
Audiology is a field that can provide
a wide variety of different services.
Audiologists can be employed in several
different types of health facilities such
as clinics, hospitals and private practices.
As an example, an elderly person
who is having trouble hearing may end
up seeing an audiologist in the nursing
home.
Alternatively, if a parent is seeing
their child having trouble with hearing,
they will take them to a private practice.
Before deciding on an audiologist,
you need to understand exactly what
you are trying to address..
The first thing that you should consider while looking for an audiologist is
the patient.
As an example, a child will do best
with a pediatric audiologist if one is
available. They are trained to work with
children who are having trouble hearing. On the other hand, adults with
hearing loss will do better with an audiologist with knowledge about hearing
aids. Many of them can explain how to
use them and can even help people cope
with the psychological effects of wearing one.
Depending on the severity of the
issue, you will want to consider whether
it is best to see an audiologist with a
master's degree or a doctorate degree.
Always check to make sure that they are
licensed in your state and have a
Certificate of Clinical Competence in
Audiology.
It is also a good idea to ask around
in order to find the audiologist with the
best reputation.
Meet up with them in order to
determine how you get along with
them. You want to make sure that the
audiologist you choose will fit your
needs.
Make sure that you talk about their
availability, treatment options, and their
overall cost.
Ask yourself if they seem like they
are up to date in their field. If you are
home bound you need to find an audiologist that will come to you.
Be sure to speak with their staff as
well. Ask about wait times, when the
slowest days are, and how long appointments usually last. Make sure that the
schedule matches your needs.
It is not possible to resolve a hearing
loss issue with one appointment. There
will be appointments for tests, consultation, and hearing aid fittings if they are
necessary, as well as follow ups. Make
sure that you or the patient is comfortable around them. If all other factors
are equal, choose your audiologist by
convenience based on location and
availability.
Remember you will be seeing this
audiologist for many years and you
need a person whom you can be comfortable with.
Remember that there are several
different types of audiologists, and they
all specialize in different areas. Make
sure that you are choosing the right
option for the patient based on their
age and their condition.
Make sure that the skill level of the
audiologist that you decide to work with
matches up with the severity of the condition, and make sure that they are
licensed and certified. Don't be afraid to
ask others for advice.
Since there will likely be several visits necessary, you will want to make
sure that you pick a choice that makes a
great deal of sense for you.

mortgage lender
How to:
Choose a Mortgage Lender
For enthusiastic home buyers, the purchase of a house can be a thrilling yet confusing experience.
Finding a dream home may take quite
some time, but once it is accomplished the
buyer will be anxious to solidify the transaction. Impatience can be a problem at
this point. It is not the time to rush
through the closing process. It is the time
to choose a good mortgage lender.
The mortgage lender can be a help or
a hindrance to the buyer. If the lender is
not just looking out for him or herself, the
experience can be positive. However, if a
mortgage lender is thinking only about
future commissions and sales, the buyer
must beware.
The lender should be well prepared
and ready to discuss all available options
no matter how much time is involved.
Reliable lenders encourage potential
clients to ask questions and look forward
to explaining confusing financial jargon to
the buyer, taking their time to ensure
everything is understood and clear.
Becoming familiar with mortgage
lending options beforehand is one important way a home buyer can test the honesty and ethics of a potential lender. Are
you being steered to what is in your best
interest or to what is in the best financial
interest of your lender?
Being forearmed with a basic understanding of the lending process will enable
the client to more quickly grasp the professionalism and integrity of the lender.
BUYER'S RIGHTS: Dealing with
mounds of forms, declarations, and financial obligations can be dizzying to the
inexperienced home buyer.
However intimidating, care must be
exercised in making sure what is signed
and agreed upon is understood by the
purchaser.
A signature cannot be erased, and a
buyer only has a short time to legally back
Considering
Buying a
out of a purchase in some cases — if at all.
Even if done within that legal time
limit the buyer still forfeits the deposit for
reneging on the agreement and may owe
an additional amount formulated according to when the first payment was originally due. It is an expensive proposition that
can be avoided by signing forms carefully.
If a mortgage lender is rushing
through the paperwork and pushing you
to just sign the forms, the lender is not
doing his or her job. The home buyer's
best interests are not being looked after
and could easily result in a misunderstanding for the purchaser.
KNOWING YOUR LENDER:
Questions and areas of concern for professional lenders involve the future longrange goals of the buyer.
A lender wants to know how long the
home will be lived in. Such knowledge
helps the lender suggest the mortgage
that best suits the homeowners needs. If a
lender is not concerned with such questions it most certainly is a red flag for the
buyer.
DEAL LOCALLY: Finding a local area
mortgage lender is most preferred. Since
interest rates can change daily, a local
lender will be more attuned to the
changes in the local housing market and
whether or not selling conditions have
changed.
A local lender also allows closer monitoring of the loan application and is close
by to answer any troubling questions that
the potential home buyer may have.
USING REFERENCES: Feel free to
ask family members and friends who they
used as their mortgage lender and if there
experiences were good and positive.
Word-of-mouth recommendations are
often totally reliable. Also check the
amount of time the lending agency has
been in operation and whether it has built
up a good business reputation.

nursing facility
Choose a Skilled Nursing Facility for your loved one
Choosing to place your loved one in a
skilled nursing facility is often a heartbreaking and difficult decision for all involved.
Both the loved one and the family making
the decision can find it painful and confusing to make a choice from the many facilities available. Knowing the steps to follow
in selecting a facility can make the process
easier for everyone.
It is important to understand what level
of care your loved one needs. Assisted living
facilities are designed for older individuals
to live in a somewhat private setting, with
staff on duty for minimal assistance. A
skilled nursing facility is designed to care for
those who are no longer able to care for
themselves due to infirmity or severe illness.
The staff at these types of facilities are much
more skilled and regulated than the staff at
an assisted living facility. Skilled nursing
facilities have staff who are authorized to
provide and administer medications and
treatments according to prescription, while
assisted living facility staff are not usually
authorized to administer medications.
The following steps can aid you in making your choice of care for your loved one:
• It is extremely important to select a
facility that is close to family and/or friends
who will be able to visit the person frequently. This will assist them with the transition
from independent home living into a skilled
nursing environment.
• One of the best ways to get a good idea
of the facility is to go and visit in person.
Any reputable facility will be happy to
schedule an interview with the facility director and a full tour of the facility, including
the living areas. Any facility who does not
want to allow a full tour or a meeting with
the director and staff should be immediately
crossed off your list of potentials.
• Sights, sounds and smells should be a
significant influence on whether you want
your loved one living in the facility full-time.
Skilled nursing facilities should feel inviting,
comfortable, have lots of friendly, smiling
faces and have no lingering odors.
Residents there should look clean and well
taken care of. Observe for activities going
on and that residents seem engaged. Meals
should feel calm and social.
• Another good method of finding the
best facility is to speak with the family
members of those who are currently living
there. They will not give you the sugarcoat-
ed version of what is happening to their
own family member, so they may provide
the most unbiased review of the staff and
facility.
• It is also important to understand that
in a skilled nursing facility, safety and health
is of the utmost concern. Sometimes there
are regulations that may seem unusual and
restrictive that you may have to follow. Staff
should be prepared to explain these regulations and the reasons for them. They are
held to higher standards to ensure that residents are safe and healthy.
• Finances are always an issue regarding
medical care, and moving your loved one to
a skilled nursing facility is no different.
Because a skilled nursing facility provides a
much higher level of care than an assisted
living facility, the cost involved will be significantly higher. The staff at the skilled nursing facility should be prepared to help you
understand the costs and various sources of
payment that may be open to you, such as
Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, long
term care insurance and private pay. You
might consider consulting an attorney who
handles nursing facility cases for their
advice on what to expect for your money
and what level of care is required to be provided to your loved one.
It may be necessary to place your loved
one in the proper skilled nursing facility if
they are no longer able to care for themselves on their own. Proper research and
frequent visits to your loved one will ensure
their quality of life is the best it can be and
they are provided with the level of care they
deserve.
It is important to remember this decision
is not a final one. If your loved one is not
receiving the care that you expect, talk to the
director of nursing or the administrator.
Frequent visits to your loved one will tell
you if they are getting the care you expect
and also alert you to any problems right
away. If the problems are not corrected or if
your loved one is showing signs of abuse or
lack of care, you are entitled to remove them
and place them with a different facility.

bank
How to:
Choose a Bank
Many consumers spend an inordinate
amount of time considering other financial transactions, but they rarely put so
much effort into their choice of banks.
Banking services can influence a wide
range of financial matters, and there are
several details to consider when choosing
a commercial bank.
■ Customer Service: Choose a local
bank where the employees treat you as
an individual and not a number. Being
able to talk with someone you know, if
you have a problem, is the best way to
have a good banking relationship. The
employees of your local bank are your
friends and neighbors and support your
community with their time and money.
■ Interest Rate and Fees: The true
value of a bank account can be found in
its interest rates. Each bank has a slightly
different interest rate for savings
accounts, although most of them will
adjust these rates based on the federal
funds rate.
Differences in interest rates may
seem insignificant, but they can result in
big changes when large deposits are concerned.
Banks services also usually involve
fees and penalties for certain transactions. A checking account might restrict
the number of checks that you are allow
to write per month before you pay a fee,
or you might be required to maintain a
minimum balance in your savings
account.
Every bank has its own policies, and
these should always be taken into
account by anyone who is choosing a
bank.
■ Convenience: Convenience is
another factor to consider when choosing a bank. Try to find one that has plenty of convenient branch locations close to
where you live and online banking.
There will most likely come a time
when you have to stop at a bank on your
way home from work or make a mad
dash to deposit a check before a bank
closes. Having a convenient location (or
several convenient locations) will make
your life much easier.
■ Overdraft Protection: As much as
you try to avoid it, the occasional overdraft happens to nearly everyone. Each
bank has specific policies regarding overdrafts. Some offer overdraft protection in
the form of a high interest credit line
that kicks in when you bounce a check,
while other banks charge a fee for each
overdraft.
Some banks don't cover bounced
checks at all. Consider the policies of
your potential banks of choice before you
come to a final decision.
■ Bank Stability: Stability is an often
overlooked element of commercial banking. When you deposit money into a
bank, it is important to consider the solvency of the bank's balance sheet.
Most funds held on deposit are invested by the bank under a fractional reserve
The Banking Partner
banking system, and a bank with a clean
balance sheet can best weather the turbulence caused by market corrections. Local
banks reinvest your money in the local
community through loans for homes,
vehicles and businesses for example.
Most banks are insured by the Federal
Deposit Insurance Corporation for up to
$250,000 per depositor. This value can
vary depending on the type and number
of accounts held by a customer.
Your money should be safe in any
bank, but failures can occur. A solid bank
should have limited exposure to toxic
assets that put its balance sheet at risk.
■ Services You Need: Banks offer a
wide range of services. Whether you
need to take out a loan or open a checking account, choose a bank that satisfies
your concerns with the lowest cost and
highest rate of return.
Careful and vigilant shoppers can
expect positive experiences with a trustworthy commercial bank.

ENT specialist
How to:
Choose an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist
Having a problem with your ear,
nose or throat can be annoying and
even frightening.
All of these areas of the body are
highly related to one another and are
also highly complex. They can make a
huge impact on the quality of one's
daily life.
These parts of the body can control
everything from a person's breathing
and hearing to one's sense of smell.
Even a person's feeling of balance when
walking can be affected by an ear, nose
or throat problem.
It is critical to choose an ear, nose
and throat specialist who is highly competent and able to provide a precise
diagnosis for a problem.
It is important to choose a specialist
who will be able to treat any problems
that one suffers.
If a person requires surgery, then he
or she should invest even more time
into choosing the right ear, nose and
throat specialist. It is important to
choose a specialist that one trusts and
feels comfortable around.
It is a good idea to make sure the
doctor has plenty of experience in diagnosing ear, nose and throat issues, too.
Be sure to find out how many years the
doctor has been practicing this particular field of medicine.
It is a great idea to also find a doctor
that makes use of technological
advances in his or her work. As the
client, you are entitled to the best treatment possible, which is often with the
latest technological advances in the
medical field.
If a new piece of equipment requires
that a person have special training or
accreditation, then be sure to find a specialist with that background and experience.
You will likely want a doctor who can
make you look your best, too. There are
some ear, nose, and throat specialists
that also offer basic cosmetic surgery
procedures. These doctors provide
Botox, Juvederm and Radiesse to make
patients look great and feel young.
Some doctors can even perform eye
lift surgeries or nose jobs, which can
make a person breathe better and clear
the sinuses. There are wide-ranging
practices that allow a doctor to help
one's sinuses get better.
The best thing to do is find a doctor
with plenty of experience with the particular problems you are facing. It is a
good idea to find out if a doctor has
treated patients with similar issues that
you have. Only then will you be sure
that a doctor is doing everything he or
she possibly can to alleviate one's problems.
When searching for recommendations, it is a good idea to ask family or
friends for doctor recommendations.
There are also plenty of online Web
sites that provide reviews of ear, nose
and throat specialists. These Web sites
can be a rich source of information for
choosing a doctor with good reviews.
A general doctor will also be able to
recommend good specialists to you. A
general practitioner is a great person to
ask, especially because you likely trust
your general doctor. He or she will be
able to point you in the right direction.
A general doctor is a great source of
information for any sort of medical
issue.
If you require surgery, then you will
want to be absolutely positive your specialist is competent in providing such a
surgery.
Make sure he or she has performed
the procedure before and is able to handle your medical issue with ease, skill
and knowledge.

kitchen remodeling
Choose a
Remodeling Company
for your kitchen
How to:
Remodeled kitchens are an enormous boom to the resale value of your
home. All home owners, whether they
are novice cooks or professional chefs,
can enjoy the benefits of a newly
designed kitchen area. However, many
home owners tend to shy away from
the seemingly intimidating remodeling
process.
These people need not fear.
Remodeling your kitchen is actually a
remarkably simple task, so long as you
are aided by a knowledgeable and honest contractor. You should begin your
search by contacting numerous kitchen
remodeling companies in your area.
Feel free to invite several different contractors into your home, and ask for
price quotes based on the extent of the
work that needs to be done.
These contractors should always be
very straightforward when providing
you with a price for their work; if they
seem reluctant to give you a direct
quote, you should search for a more
honest company.
Some contractors will assert that
certain components of your remodel
will need to be attended to by specialized subcontractors. Depending on the
specific state of your kitchen, this may
or may not be necessary. However, even
if the work of other subcontractors is
required, the head kitchen remodeling
company should be able to provide you
with a rough estimate of the project's
total cost.
You should also ask the kitchen
remodeling company to provide you
with an estimate of how long the project will take to be completed.
Depending on the extent of your
remodel, this period of time will vary
greatly; however, all contractors should
be able to complete your project in
roughly the same amount of time.
If a certain contractor claims that
your remodel will take half as long as
another contractor's estimate, you
should be wary of this company. At
best, they should be able to offer a good
Page 12
explanation why they can complete the
job faster than other providers.
Once you have narrowed down your
contractor choices, you should check
each company's references to ensure
their reputability and quality of work. If
at all possible, try to directly speak with
people who have hired a specific contractor before.
Each contractor should be able to
provide you with a list of past clients
that would be willing to speak to you
about the company's work. The
Internet is a valuable source of information if such references are not available.
After selecting your kitchen remodeling company, you should inform the
contractor that you are interested in his
or her services and ask to view the specific terms of a contract between you
and the company. The contractor
should then provide you with detailed
information regarding each task
involved with the kitchen remodel, and
how much time and money each task
will take to complete.
Before signing this contract, ask to
view proof of the kitchen remodeling
company's licensure.
You should also check that the company possesses its own accident insurance. If the contractor does not possess
insurance and an accident occurs while
he or she is working on your property,
you could be held financially responsible.
You should also inquire about any
subcontractors that may be required to
complete the job. If such workers are
needed and are not considered to be a
component of the head contracting
company, then additional contracts
regarding their contributions to the job
may be necessary.
You should treat each individual
subcontractor exactly as you treated the
head contractor; check each worker's
references, licensure and proof of insurance before agreeing to pay for his or
her services.

real estate agency
How to:
Choose a Real Estate Agency
Whether you are selling or buying a
home, it is vital to have both the best
Realtor and real estate agency on your
side. The agent and agency that you
choose could make the difference between
selling your house for the asking price or
settling for the best offer on the table,
which could mean thousands of extra dollars in your pocket.
Although you will be spending most of
your time with the real estate agent that
you choose, the agency that employs them
can also make a difference in the sale or
purchase of your next home. You want to
choose an agency that has plenty of local
connections, a keen understanding of the
neighborhoods you are interested in as
well as solid contacts within the world of
real estate.
This is especially important if you are
selling a home. While your real estate
agent will play a key role in helping you
locate your dream home, it is often their
agency that will take care of the sale of the
house.
What can make the difference between
one real estate agency and the next is the
methods by which they advertise their listings and how they conduct the sales
process. This can greatly influence the sale
of your home and ultimately how much
you will get for it.
Although they may all appear the
same on the outside, some real estate
agencies may differ slightly in the type of
real estate they prefer to show or sell.
Some might be more familiar with commercial properties while others are great
at selling high-end homes.
Browse the agency's listings beforehand to see if your home meshes well with
their existing listings. Examine how the
listings themselves are displayed to see if
you, as a prospective buyer, would find
them easy to read yet informative.
While you shouldn't rule agencies out
because of their size, it is an important
factor to consider. While smaller agencies
may be able to dedicate more time to the
sale of your home, they also may not have
the networking advantages of larger agencies.
If you do choose a larger agency, the
real estate agents have more of a chance of
networking to sell your home. Yet you
may not get the personalized attention
that you could with a smaller agency,
which might make the process seem overwhelming at first.
There are several questions that you
should be prepared to ask when selling a
home:
■ What methods will be used to sell my
home? Home Guides? The Internet?
Newspapers?
■ How many pictures of my house will
appear online?
■ On which sites will my home be displayed?
■ Can you see examples of other homes
that have recently been sold in my price
range?
■ How long have they been selling
homes in my neighborhood?
■ What makes your agency different
from the others?
Make sure to investigate the reputation
of an agency before you say yes to their
services. If friends or family have an
agency that they recommend you should
rely on their previous experiences for your
own home sale.
You should also find out how long an
agency has been operating in the area. It
is preferable to choose one that has been
established for a long time, but those who
are new can also work hard for the sale of
your home. Although they shouldn't necessarily be avoided, you should be aware
that those individuals who run an agency
as their side business may not have the
amount of time necessary to show your
house the way you would like it to be
shown.
Make sure you do your research
beforehand since this is one of the biggest
transactions you will ever conduct. You
want only the best real estate agents and
agency on your side to get the best deal for
your future home or sale.

chiropractor
How to:
Choose a Chiropractor
Chiropractic care can be a great choice
for people who want convenient, cost-effective treatment for their health care needs.
In fact, it's an increasingly popular choice
for millions of Americans with back, neck,
leg and arm pain, headaches, musculoskeletal injuries and other ailments. And
because chiropractors are expertly trained
to work on muscles, joints, bones and ligaments — the things that keep your entire
body connected — and with interference to
the spinal nerves, which supply all parts of
your body – Chiropractic care can improve
your general health as well.
That's why it's important to choose a
chiropractor for your health care. Whether
you're experiencing pain or just want to
improve your overall well-being, many people get good results from visiting a local
chiropractor.
■ WHY CHIROPRACTIC? The reasons people choose chiropractic care boil
down to four things: quality, cost, convenience and outcomes.
Quality can be assured by the rigorous
Page 14
training that chiropractors go through
before they can be licensed. They're trained
on the human body's nerves and musculoskeletal system, and chiropractors' educational requirements are among the most
stringent in the health care industry. They
typically spend four years in a pre-medical
program and four to five years of professional training. According to the
American Chiropractic Association,
licensed chiropractors go through classroom, laboratory and clinical training that
totals at least 4,200 hours.
Cost and convenience are two other
reasons chiropractic care is so popular.
Compared to the skyrocketing cost of other
types of medical care, chiropractic can
seem downright affordable for the results it
provides. And with the waiting times at
doctors' offices and emergency rooms
becoming ridiculous, chiropractors can typically offer treatments that fit into your
busy lifestyle.
Finally, the positive health outcomes
people get from chiropractic care matter
more than anything else. People love the
care they get from their chiropractor — and
are happy to tell you about it — but the best
way to see the outcome is to try it for yourself. The most ringing endorsement of chiropractic care is seeing that it works for
you.
■ INSURANCE COVERAGE: When
selecting a chiropractor, it's important to
know what your insurance company will
cover. Most insurance carriers include chiropractic care as part of their regular coverage, including Medicare, but you should
check to see exactly what your health plan
includes. You should also see if there are
any discounts for choosing an "in-network"
chiropractor, which could let you have a
lower co-pay and more affordable coverage.
Chiropractic care for injuries related to
automobile accidents and on the job
injuries is also covered.
Even if you don't have health insurance,
you may find chiropractic care is a costeffective alternative that gets good results.
Many chiropractors have a very reasonable
A Leavenworth Times Publication
charge for an office visit, and there is not
the additional cost for prescription medications.
■ GET REFERRALS: One way to
choose a chiropractor in your area is to ask
friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers who they use. You may be surprised at how many people you know who
have gotten good treatment from chiropractors and are happy to share their experiences about it.
They should be able to answer your
questions about the things you can only
learn from first-hand knowledge — things
like the chiropractor's demeanor, how easy
it is to schedule an office visit, and any
other concerns you might have about the
chiropractic process.
You can also use the American
Chiropractic Association's online "Find a
Doctor" tool at acatoday.com/ DocSearch.
By taking your time to find a good chiropractor in your area, you'll get the affordable, convenient and effective health benefits that come from chiropractic care.

Choosing a church can feel like a
daunting task. Especially for newcomers, or for people who have been in one
congregation for a long period of time,
selecting a new church home can be
overwhelming.
Sometimes, finding the perfect
church takes patience and a lot of visits
to different congregations. However, if
you have a positive attitude, do some
research and ask the right questions,
choosing a church can be easier than
you might think.
First, it is important to understand
what a church is. A church is a group of
people who share similar religious
beliefs. Members of a church form a
community that supports, encourages
and helps one another.
A church community worships and
learns together, helping each other grow
in faith. Because of the support and
community available in a good congregation, a church home can be enormously beneficial for one’s personal spiritual life.
When searching for a church, your
first step should be to pray to God for
guidance. Ask God to help you find the
right church home. Second, you will
want to determine the kind of church
you are looking for. Do you want a more
formal, reverent service? Or, are you
looking for a modern, contemporary
church with high-powered worship and
energetic sermons?
Once you have determined what kind
of church you are looking for, do some
research. Look online or in your local
Yellow Pages for area churches that
sound similar to the kind of church you
want to attend. Your local newspaper
may have a listing of local services as
well.
A Leavenworth Times Publication
You might also consider asking
friends, relatives, or co-workers what
church they attend and if they have any
recommendations. One benefit of asking
a friend for a recommendation is that
you will have someone to go to the
church with, which may make you feel
more comfortable. Make a list of the top
few churches and begin planning your
visits.
When visiting a church, gather as
much information as you can. Take a
bulletin home with you. Speak to the
people sitting next to you in the service.
Stay after to speak with the pastor if
you’d like.
Many churches have a coffee hour
after the service, which can be a great
opportunity to introduce yourself to
members and learn more about the congregation.
There are several critical questions
you should ask or reflect upon at each
church visit. First, find out the church’s
statement of belief and doctrinal positions. Do they align with yours?
Second, is the size of the church comfortable? Is it too large for you to feel
involved, or too small and thus limited
in activities? Finally, will there be ministry opportunities and ways for your
children or family to get involved?
Ultimately, choosing the right church
is very important. Be sure to choose a
place where you and your family feel
comfortable, both personally and spiritually.
Finally, and most importantly, choose
a church home where you feel God is
worshipped and present.

community college
How to:
Choose a Community College
Choosing a community college can be
difficult and stressful. Community colleges
can be a great way to begin your educational career and often lead to more opportunities such as bachelor and master degree
programs.
Attending a community college is a
great option for students with family
responsibilities and jobs. They can also be a
great value.
There are many things that you want to
consider when selecting a community college. It is important for prospective students to consider all aspects of each community college before choosing the best one
for their needs.
Things to consider include location,
costs, majors and scheduling.
Community colleges cost less than most
four-year colleges. Students can save thousands of dollars by attending community
college, so it's a great way for students who
might otherwise not be able to attend college to receive higher education.
The cost and level of financial assistance
available are important factors to consider
when selecting a community college. Local
citizens or civic groups often offer scholarships that encourage students to attend
local colleges.
There are also state and federal loans and
grants that can help lower the costs of education .Community colleges also offer academic scholarships; performance grants in
art, athletics, debate, music, and theatre;
and grants and scholarships through an
endowment association.
It is important to consider the location
of the community colleges that you may
attend. Small cities may only have one
community college, while larger cities may
have multiple community colleges to
choose from. Often, students hope to live at
home while attending a community college
that is only a few miles from their home.
If a community college does not have
the program or major that you are interested in, you may be forced to attend a different school.
Most community colleges offer a wide
variety of majors in order to satisfy the
needs of many students. They also typically
offer a core package of credits that can be
transferred to a four-year university quite
easily. Community colleges also offer articulated degree programs – 2+2 programs – in
cooperation with 4-year colleges and universities. These cooperative programs spell
out specifically the courses students should
complete at the community college to
transfer into the college or university to
complete a bachelor’s degree program.
You can find a college with quality education as well as experiences such as internships. An associate's degree can allow a student to become educated in a shorter
amount of time than students who choose
to enroll in bachelor's degree programs.
Also, if multiple community colleges
offer the major of your interest, it can be
beneficial to compare employment statistics of each school.
It is important to also consider class
scheduling. Community colleges allow
older students to get an education. This is a
great way for students who are already
employed to get the education they need to
make a career change.
Community colleges allow flexible
scheduling for students to accomplish their
goals. It can take extra time to complete a
degree if a student chooses to attend community college part time, though.
Students with families and daytime jobs
can benefit from evening and weekend
classes.
This is a great way for students to get an
education in a non-traditional way. Online
courses can also be a great option for nontraditional students.
There are also accelerated programs
available. This speeds up the process of
education and allows students to take control of their learning.
Many colleges offer training programs
that do not require a degree. Certificate
programs are available in fields such as
business management, nursing, pharmacy
technician, phlebotomy, and medical coding and billing that can often be completed
in as little as a year.
When considering a community college, it is important to consider different
aspects of the education in order to pick the
college that is right for your needs. With
the right research, you can find a college
that fits in with your scheduling, goals and
career plans.

credit union
How to:
Choose a Credit Union
At a time when banking industry
woes are the talk of the evening news,
many people find that a communitybased credit union is the perfect option
for taking care of their financial service
needs.
A credit union is a cooperative financial institution owned by its members.
The deposits in most credit unions are
insured by the federal government up to
$250,000, making them a safe and
secure choice for handling your financial
accounts.
Because they are not-for-profit organizations, credit unions also may be able
to offer you more lucrative rates of interest on your savings and more competitive interest rates on loans.
To choose the right institution, begin
by first investigating which local credit
unions will accept you as a member.
Some credit unions are tied to particular
companies, so only those employees are
eligible for membership. Others are
linked to certain communities or school
districts, so you can join if you live or
work within the appropriate boundaries.
With so many credit unions around the
country, there are likely to be multiple
options in your neighborhood.
Once you determine which credit
unions you are allowed to join, you can
narrow the field of possibilities by studying the services and fees at each institution.
If you are you primarily interested in
opening a savings or checking account,
visit the credit union to get a copy of the
current interest rate sheets for each of
these services.
Most credit unions will give you this
information at their offices on request,
and some even post the details on their
Web sites.
Always find out whether there are
any fees associated with the accounts
you want to open.
Like many savings and loans and
banks, some credit unions will charge
service fees if you do not keep a minimum balance in an account. Others will
June 2011
A Leavenworth Times Publication
charge fees if you don’t use your debit
card a certain number of times each
month. Extra fees can make a good
interest rate seem less appealing, so
study those details before you join.
If you are interested in applying for a
personal or business loan, be sure to ask
whether lending is one of the services
offered by the credit union. Then compare the loan interest rates and specials
at local institutions to find out which
credit union would best fit your needs.
Many consumers want to compare
the office hours at credit unions and the
proximity of branches to their homes
before joining. Some credit unions may
be open for longer hours in the evening
or may have weekend office hours,
which can be helpful if you work every
weekday.
Another important issue for many
customers is the availability of ATM
machines and the fees associated with
their use. If you need money when the
offices are closed, you will want to be
sure the credit union has ATMs near
your home to give you access to your
money.
In addition, some institutions have
agreements for shared services with
other credit unions around the country.
Through these arrangements,
customers may have access to ATMs
and other services when they are away
from home.
This can be a handy advantage for
those who travel or for people who have
children attending college in other cities.
If this benefit interests you, check with
local credit unions to see which ones
offer this service.
Once you have done your research,
make a list of the pros and cons so you
can compare each individual credit
union before making the switch. You
will find that credit unions can be an
excellent alternative to banks and other
financial institutions, with comparable,
competitive services and rates. If you do
your homework, you can find an ideal
credit union match.

eye doctor
How to:
Choose an Eye Doctor
The eyes are not only our most heavily relied on sense,
but can also provide a “snapshot” to the health of the rest
of the body.
While most people relate nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism to their vision the relationship
between systemic diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure,
etc) and the eyes is of great importance.
The small blood vessels in the back of the eye are typically affected early in the disease process and regular eye
exams are an excellent method to ensure overall health.
Now that the need for regular vision and eye health exams
is clear, choosing the right eye doctor is the next step.
It is sometimes confusing as to whether you need to
see an ophthalmologist or an optometrist when setting up
an eye exam.
While optometrists are O.D.’s and ophthalmologists are
M.D.’s, the biggest difference to the general population is
that ophthalmologists perform eye surgeries and
optometrists do not.
Optometrists and ophthalmologists can examine the
visual system, check eye health (from the front of the eye
to the back with dilation), and manage eye diseases and
injuries.
Both doctors can treat infections, glaucoma, remove
foreign bodies and evaluate cataracts.
Checking the American Optometric Association website (www.aoa.org) is a great way to find a qualified
optometrist in your area.
The site can also help to identify doctors who work
with children, geriatrics, or specific eye diseases.
When calling different doctor offices it is important to
ask what is included in a basic eye exam.
It is very important to hear that they check “eye health”
and not just vision. Diseases such as glaucoma can be
detrimental to the eye but do not affect vision until it is
too late.
Asking family and friends for recommendations is
another way to find an eye doctor.
While some eye doctors advertise through television,
radio, and billboards, most rely on word of mouth, reputation, and community involvement to build a patient
base.

dentist
How to:
Choose A Dentist
Choosing a dentist can make a world
of difference in a patient's smile and oral
health. It can also be a daunting task,
especially as the number of practicing
dentists continues to increase rapidly
throughout the country.
There used to be little choice as to
which dentist to visit. Teeth cleaning,
x-rays and dental operations were performed by whichever dentist served a particular area or insurance company.
Now, more than ever, individuals are
choosing their own dentist in hopes of
finding a friend and ally ready to help create a gorgeous smile while offering a
pleasant dental experience.
When choosing a dentist, it is important to consider a few key things. Location
and office hours are important in terms of
convenience. The dental office should be
located close to work or home and offer
hours compatible with an individual's
lifestyle.
Word-of-mouth referrals from friends
and family are one of the best ways to find
a reputable dentist as well as knowing
which dentists to avoid.
Most dental offices now have Web sites
that offer valuable information about the
dentists practicing at the office and usually include each dentist's basic background
information, education and dental specialties.
Information to look for when reading
through a particular dentist's Web site
include things such as what extra charges
or costs are involved should an appointment be missed or cancelled,
x-ray requirements and costs, and costs
related to any extra services. It is also
important to note how far in advance
cleanings and appointments should be
scheduled.
Emergency dental services should be
available for any dental crises. This information can also be obtained by calling the
dental office. Look for dental offices with
receptionists that are friendly, timely, and
helpful.
A basic information check should be
performed on any potential dentists
before the initial visit.
Check that they have earned a degree
from a reputable school and are up to date
with their licensing and educational
requirements. They will preferably be
keeping up with the latest dental technologies and trends.
Always be sure that they support upto-date dental insurance. The best dentists
consistently provide cutting edge dental
care while striving to create and maintain
a healthy, beautiful smile for their
patients.
Payment should be discussed ahead of
time with estimates being given for any
and all services. If dental insurance will be
used, always check to be sure the dentist
that has been chosen accepts the specific
insurance. If not, a new dentist may need
to be selected. Discuss payment plan
options ahead of time, especially for
expensive procedures.
When visiting a dentist for the first
time, the dentist should be professional
and friendly. Questions should be asked
based upon the individual patient's needs
and concerns. If phobias and pain are
concerns, patients should express this
during an initial visit with a dentist and
determine what can be done to alleviate
them. Many dentists are willing to go
above and beyond to cater to patients with
these specific concerns.
A basic oral history should be
reviewed before hand, and future treatment and prevention options should be
discussed. A good dentist will work to
make a patient comfortable and should
have a pleasant chair-side manner.
First impressions mean a lot when
choosing a dentist. If the dentist, hygienists or office staff create an atmosphere
that is anything less than professional or
pleasant, a new dentist should be
searched for.
The best dentists offer friendly, happy
dental experiences. Teeth are important to
overall health and appearance and should
be trusted with only the best of dentists.

funeral home
How to:
Choose a Funeral Home
When grieving over the loss of a loved
one, the last thing you want to
be thinking about is planning their funeral.
However, if no funeral plans were
made prior to the death, you may find
yourself facing this reality. This is a
difficult process and you want to make
sure that you are comfortable with any
arrangements you might have to make.
When you are ready to begin planning,
the first step you need to take is to choose
where you would like to have the service.
This decision may be easier if your loved
one was a member of a church, synagogue, mosque or other religious organization.
Next, perform a search on the Internet
or newspaper obituary page to find funeral homes in your area. Call each one and
make an appointment for an on-site or
telephone arrangement conference with a
funeral director to discuss your basic
options.
Most likely, the cost of the funeral is
one of your concerns. Start your conversation with the funeral director by asking
about the basic fee. Independent familyowned funeral homes may offer lower
costs, but you won't know for sure until
you talk to them.
From there, you can follow-up with
questions on available services and any
down payments you will need to make.
After this initial conversation, you can
make a more educated estimate of your
funeral budget.
There’s no getting around the high cost
of funerals. It is said to be one of the most
expensive purchases you will make. The
total cost can easily run over $10,000,
with the casket alone making up over half
of the sum.
With the funeral director, you will
review general pricing with a list of services. You won’t want to make any decisions
on the spot, so ask the funeral director for
an itemized price in writing.
The Federal Trade Commission mandates that each funeral home provide customers with a pricing list. Remember that
you have control over what services you
receive. You should never pay for funeral
services that you do not want.
If casket prices at your chosen funeral
home are too pricey, you have the right to
purchase a casket elsewhere with no additional charge. Compare prices at other
funeral homes and on the Internet, then
make the choice that works best for your
situation.
If you are planning the funeral with
other family members, make sure you discuss who is going to be the primary contact for all funeral arrangements. This
makes things easier for both the funeral
home and family members who are trying
to get information on arrangements.
After finalizing your decision on what
type of service you would like, you need to
get all of the paperwork in order. This
means filling out and submitting all necessary permits and copies of death certificates, as well as securing burial arrangements at the cemetery or crematory.
This may all seem overwhelming, but
remember that if you have done your
research you have chosen the best funeral
home for the needs of your loved one.
They have the expertise to guide you
through this difficult process and to
ensure the funeral runs smoothly for
everyone.
Remember if you have any questions,
do not hesitate to ask the funeral home for
their advice. You always have the option of
finding a different funeral home if you
have problems with them down the road.
If that happens, you only need to pay for
services that you requested them to perform.
Contact your funeral home for additional questions or concerns.

fitness center
How to:
Choose a Fitness Center
Joining a gym is an excellent step on
the path to a healthier lifestyle, for both
experienced fitness enthusiasts and
those newly resolved to get in shape.
The benefits of exercise are wellknown: it releases endorphins, elevating
mood and fighting stress; it builds muscle, which more effectively burns calories; it increases energy and improves
sleep; it can lower blood pressure and
reduce the risk of some types of cancer,
osteoporosis, and Type 2 diabetes.
However, any fitness regimen can be
easy to begin but difficult to maintain.
The excuses are varied. Lack of time,
lack of motivation, or simple boredom
all get in the way of forming good fitness habits.
A gym works against the latter problem by providing a variety of equip-
ment, programs and teachers to switch
up workouts and keep exercise interesting. Membership is a great way to meet
other people with similar goals, who
can help offer motivation. And because
you have already paid for the gym use,
it is more difficult to claim lack of time
as a reason to skip exercising.
Before you begin the search for a
gym, it’s important to define your fitness goals. If you want to trim down,
what is your goal weight? Do you want
to maintain your current fitness level or
do you want to add bulk? When you are
visiting different gyms, convey your
goals to the staff and ask for their
advice. It’s important that they are
knowledgeable enough to guide you
through the different machines and are
interested in helping you achieve your
unique goals.
No matter what your fitness goals
are, it’s likely that strength training will
be an integral part. Even if you are
looking to slim down, improving your
muscle mass is very important. The
only thing in our bodies that burns fat
is muscle, nothing else. As we age, we
lose muscle. On average, adults lose 7
to 10 pounds of muscle every 10 years
after the age of 26. So it only makes
sense, that we put on weight easier as
we age and it’s harder to take it off.
Muscle also controls our metabolism,
which is the rate at which we burn fat.
The less muscle density that we have
the less efficiently we burn fat. That is
why strength training is often at the
heart of any workout plan. The staff at
the gym you choose will be able to help
get you started.
most important thing is that you feel
safe and comfortable, and that you
think that you can achieve your fitness
goals in the environment.
The right gym for you is not necessarily the largest or most popular. The

look younger
How to:
Look 10 Years Younger
If you want to be successful in today’s
highly competitive, fast-paced business
world, it’s important to look young. And if
you’re one of those many individuals in
their 30s, 40s, 50s and even 60s who are
giving love a second chance, of course you
want to look as youthful as possible.
That’s why plastic surgery is becoming
increasingly popular with millions of
Americans in every walk of life. Botox,
Juvederm and a regular regimen of facials
have helped redefine what it means to
grow older: today’s 55-year-old often looks
hardly a day over 35.
Plastic surgery and beauty treatments
used to be something that people shied
away from talking about. But today’s culture is very much about giving credit
where credit is due. Today, people are open
about their interest in procedures that can
help preserve a youthful appearance. Read
on if you’d like to learn about some treatments that will shave decades off the way
you look.
■ FOTOFACIALS: Want to improve
the texture of your skin, eradicate age spots
and sun damage and clear the signs of
aging from your facial complexion? Then
Fotofacials are for you.
Fotofacials reverse the harsh effects
that unfiltered sunlight has on the delicate
skin of your face, leaving you with a fresh
glowing complexion. Light pulses are used
to minimize the fine lines, broken capillaries and enlarged pores that for many are
an unavoidable consequence of the aging
process.
Fotofacials are also effective against
acne, rosacea and varicose veins. The
process is noninvasive so in hardly any
time at all after a Fotofacial you will be out
showing off the new improved you.
■ BOTOX: Botox is used to eradicate
facial wrinkles. It is minimally invasive,
and one treatment generally lasts between
three and four months with results that
most people find nothing short of amazing.
Some physicians are become so adept
at Botox injections that the treatments last
for six whole months! Botox injections
have become a commonplace procedure in
today’s society, popular with many women
– and increasingly with men as well.
Botox injections help your facial muscles
cease the involuntary contractions that
cause lines and wrinkles to form around
the eyes, the forehead and the mouth
(“marionette lines.”) In the forehead area,
Botox can also help raise the brow line.
According to the American Academy of
Cosmetic Surgery (AACS,) over 17 million
Americans, both female and male, received
some type of cosmetic beauty procedure in
2009 – the largest number ever. And that
number is growing by leaps and bounds
every year.
Asian Americans are the culture most
comfortable with cosmetic treatments;
fully 30% of those surveyed reported that
either they have received or would consider receiving a beauty treatment like lipo-
suction, a facelift or Botox. But Caucasians
and African Americans are also becoming
increasingly comfortable with cosmetic
treatments, the same study showed.
When you’re looking good, you’re feeling confident. When you’re feeling confident, you are able to accomplish more of
the things that are important for you to be
able to do – whether it’s getting that workplace promotion or finding a new love.
Be honest with yourself: Are you completely happy with the way you look?
Would turning back the clock give you a
new enthusiasm for your life? Then like so
many other millions of Americans, you
owe it to yourself to consider cosmetic
beauty procedures.
Botox and specialized facials are an
easy, cost-effective means of improving
your appearance; a brow lift, facial, tummy
tuck requires more of a financial commitment. Either choice you make will make
you want to look in the mirror more often
to admire the new, improved you.

HVAC
How to:
Choose an HVAC Company
In the summer, there seems to be
nothing more important than good air
conditioning. In the winter, nothing is
more important than an effective heating
system.
The key to getting great heating and
air conditioning service is finding the right
HVAC company. It’s been said that an
HVAC company is like a spouse. Good
ones are helpful, reliable and there for you
in your times of need, whereas bad ones
will cost you a lot of money, cause you
many headaches and put you in
uncomfortable situations.
Word of mouth will provide the best
recommendations for an HVAC company.
Ask your family and friends who they've
had good experience using. When you
hear the same name more than once,
that's a good sign.
Make sure that you let the company
know that they were recommended by
people close to you. This will let them
know that they need to do a good job or
other customers will hear about it and
maybe consider taking their business to
another company.
You want to make sure any company
you use is reputable. Unfortunately today
many are not as reputable as we’d like to
think.
Ask the difficult questions. What are
their prices? Do they offer a guarantee or
warranty? What are their usual turnaround times? What manufacturers do
they use?
Selecting a high efficiency unit is
smart. Hiring a contractor who will install
the unit so it performs at the high level of
efficiency is very smart. It takes great skill
and a little extra time to design and test
the system to ensure the equipment was
installed correctly. Post installation
measurements are key factors to ensuring
your energy savings and guarding your
health and safety.
You should receive the equipment's
operators manual(s) and be shown how to
do a few simple things, like operate the
thermostat and change the air filter. You
should receive warranty and maintenance
requirements and contact information.
You'll also want to know if the
company has insurance for accidents that
are likely to happen occasionally. This can
save you from having to file a claim on
your homeowners insurance should any
mishaps take place and cause damage to
your property during the installation.
HVAC companies that are quality
businesses will have a membership in a
reputable professional organization such
as the Air Conditioning Contractors of
America.
Make sure to check proper permits.
An HVAC company getting the proper
permits can save a homeowner many
headaches.
Following this advice will help you find
an HVAC company that will help save you
some money and leave you satisfied with
their work.

insurance
How to:
Choose an Insurance Agent
Many people struggle to find the
best insurance agent. It can be complicated knowing whether a specific agent
is looking out for your needs or their
own commission.
Sometimes people do not know the
best ways to go about finding an agent.
It is important to ensure that you have
the correct insurance in order to protect
yourself, and you can do this with the
help of an insurance agent.
Before selecting the the type of
insurance that you want, you will need
to find an experienced agent. It is crucial to research agents and make sure
that you are choosing one who is reputable. You may want to ask family
members and friends if they recommend their insurance agents.
If you are recommended an agent,
chances are you will be just as pleased
as your friends and family members. A
good agent will do their work correctly
Page 24
and professionally in order to continue
receiving referrals. If you choose an
agent and are pleased, your agent will
hope that you recommend their services
to others.
If you do not have an agent recommended to you, you can still do outside
research. You may consider calling
insurance brokers and individual insurance companies. If you choose to do
business with a larger insurance company, their agents will often be more consistent from office to office because of
standardized training and practices.
You should consider that they may not
be as creative with their services, however, as an independent agent.
Take a lot of care when shopping for
the best agent. Treat this research as
your would purchasing a new car or
home. Make sure that you pick a company that is highly reviewed. You will
also want to consider making sure that
all licensing is in order for the agent
that your choose.
Once you decide on some possible
agents, it is a good idea to meet with
the agents or brokers. Have a list of
questions and concerns so that you can
get any questions that you have
answered. Make sure that you feel comfortable with the broker or agent's
answers.
If you feel as if an agent is trying to
get you to purchase a policy that is not
appropriate, this is not a good sign.
Some agents may try to hard to up-sell
a policy. Alert your agent that you are
looking for more information and are
not ready to agree on a policy right
away. If you choose a good agent, they
will allow you to take your time and
gather all of the important research
needed to make your decision.
Also make sure that your agent is
willing to have a relationship with you.
A Leavenworth Times Publication
You do not only want to have a policy
sold to you. With a relationship, you
will be able to contact your agent if you
have any questions or concerns. This
can include receiving help with filing a
claim.
Take caution to choose an agent that
is reputable and well-established. If
your agent has been in the business for
many years, chances are they will better
understand the policies that they sell
and be able to take extra care to ensure
that you are properly protected.
It is important to get the correct
insurance in order to protect you and
your financial future. The right research
needs to be done in order to assure that
you are getting the right insurance policy.
You, your family and your finances
will benefit from your efforts. You will
be better protected with the help of a
good insurance agent.

jeweler
How to:
Choose a Jeweler
When the time comes to purchase new
jewelry, such as an engagement or graduation, the choice of which jeweler to go to is
an important one.
In order to get the best deal, the consumer has to weigh many different
options, balancing all of one’s options with
what is wanted and for what price.
This problem is made more difficult by
the large number of jewelers active in the
market today. While most jewelers have
some merit, making the right choice
requires knowing not only one’s own
wants and needs, but also how the jewelry
business works.
While different jewelers possess different skill levels and qualities, there are a
few things that jewelers should offer their
customers, and without those things a
customer is at a disadvantage. Essentially,
consumers who are seeking out the right
jeweler should find someone who is
skilled, attentive and reasonable.
The most important quality to look for
is skill. Not all professional jewelers are
equal in terms of their skill, and some of
them will have more ability than others.
This makes it very important for the consumer to search for a jeweler who has
continuously demonstrated great skill.
The best jewelry professionals are
those who can create pieces with their
own hands, and they are the ones who can
fix just about anything without any problem.
These kinds of jewelers understand
every part of the process, and they are
capable of performing their work on their
own, from start to finish. The consumer
who finds a jeweler with these kinds of
skills will be pleased with their results.
However, the jeweler’s business is not
entirely about skill and expertise. Instead,
a jeweler’s skill is coupled with how much
care is offered for to each customer for his
or her specific needs and wishes. When an
individual makes a purchase, the product
should be more than just a ring or a neck-

In addition to skill and service, the
consumer should expect a guarantee. The
top professionals in the industry will offer
free repairs and unlimited service for their
work. This means that if it breaks, it can
be taken back to the jeweler repairs.
This guarantee can create a personal
relationship with the jeweler, which is the
best situation for consumers.
Some jewelry purchases are a considerable financial and sentimental investment. For the buyer, this means that they
will want to know that the jeweler is going
to create the best possible work.
For those who have created a personal,
working relationship a jeweler, it is possible to have faith in finished product.
However, these relationships cannot be
forged without first choosing and working
with a jeweler for a long time.
While price is an important factor to
consider, choosing a jeweler on the basis
of price alone is not always the best idea.
While a jeweler may offer a solid price,
they might not deliver in terms of quality
or other important factors.
When choosing a jeweler, the consumer should be assured of getting the
best deal possible without any fear of
being cheated. Many jewelers can provide
this type of price assurance, while also
providing a level of quality and service
that is worth the investment.
The good thing is that a large number
of reliable jewelers are active in the market, but choosing the right jeweler is a
process that should involve a long period
of personal research.
Deciding between all the available
options can be a challenge, but by focusing on finding a skilled, experienced, and
attentive jeweler, the process is certain to
be a success.
By demonstrating these qualities, jewelers become well-known in the industry,
so figuring out who they are should not be
difficult once you know what to look for.

daycare
How to:
Choose a Daycare
Choosing a daycare is a very important job for parents.
The sad truth is that children in daycare often spend more time with their
daycare providers than they do with
their parents.
Therefore, it is extremely important
to select a daycare provider that is trustworthy, kind and reliable. It is a good
idea to spend a day visiting several
potential daycares.
Take the child or children that will be
spending time in the daycare with you.
It is just as important that your children feel comfortable with the daycare
as you do.
The following are the areas of the
daycare that you should evaluate.
■ EMPLOYEES: Watch how the
employees interact with their charges.
You want to make sure that they are
kind and respectful to all of the children
in the daycare. Make sure that they
don’t play favorites. Make sure they
spend equal amounts of time and energy on all of the children. You also want
to ensure that enough staff members
are present to take care of all of the
children well. Lastly, make sure that the
staff is practicing good hygiene.
Anywhere a large number of children
are present, this is very important.
■ FACILITIES: The employees are
the most important area to evaluate.
Next in importance is the building or
buildings in which your children will be
spending their days. Make sure that all
areas of the building are well-lit. Also,
make sure that the paint scheme and
décor are warm and inviting. Bright,
primary colors are best for children.
Look to see if all areas of the building
seem safe for children. Especially make
sure that there are no dangerous chemicals or medicines within the grasp of
curious kids. Ensure that there are nap
We’ve created a loving, nurturing and secure environment where
children feel free to express themselves and embrace their natural
love of learning. Our dynamic full-time and part-time enrichment

painting and dancing along with computer time and school
readiness exercises. We invite you to get to know us, and discover

spaces available.
■ ACTIVITIES: Children can
become easily bored. It is important to
make sure that they are adequately
stimulated during their time in daycare.
Ask the director what kind of activities
the children will be engaging in over the
course of the day. There should be a
good mix of intellectual, creative and
physical stimulation. It is a good idea to
avoid daycares that have a television.
Time spent in arts and crafts, story time
and playground activities are much
more beneficial to a child’s development
than spending time in front of a television.
■ ODDS AND ENDS: Ask the director about the rules of the daycare. Ask
how they are enforced. Make sure that
the rules seem fair and that they are
clearly explained to the children. Also,
ask any other miscellaneous questions
that you feel are important. No matter
Serving the
Leavenworth/Lansing
Communities since 1993
how insignificant you may feel the question is, it is important to know everything you need before your child starts
attending the daycare.
■ QUESTION EVERYONE: Don’t
just limit your questions to the director
of the daycare. Ask employees anything
that you feel is important, or even anything that you feel is trivial. Their attitude and reception during your questioning will tell you a lot about the kind
of people that your child will be spending most of their days with.
■ WATCH YOUR CHILD: While it is
important that you feel comfortable
during the daycare visit, you also want
to watch your child closely during the
visit. Make sure that they seem comfortable both with the staff and the
other children. If your child seems not
to like the daycare, then it is a good idea
to look at other daycares no matter how
much you personally may like it.

auto repair
How to:
Choose an Auto Repair Shop
When your car needs repairs or service, which they all eventually do, it pays to
shop around ahead of time before the
repairs are needed. If you have an auto
repair shop set up before your car needs
any repairs or service, you won’t be forced
to make a quick decision because of the
need to have something fixed immediately.
Keep in mind that a well-maintained car
will run longer, have a better ride and help
you stay within your budget for your car.
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
■ Many mechanics say that less than
40 percent of their new customers are
walk-ins. Most come to a certain mechanic because of recommendations from
friends, relatives or co-workers. If you
don’t have any recommendations, be sure
to ask the auto repair technician that you
seek out for references.
■ Check with the Better Business
Bureau in your area. They can help you
determine if the repair shop’s performance
and reliability measure up to the standards
of expertise and professionalism. These
factors are things that you should always
look into before selecting a repair facility
based just on the lowest price.
■ If you tend to travel quite a bit, you
might want to find an auto repair shop
that offers a national warranty. A warranty
of 12,000 miles or 12 months will be helpful if you’re having repeat issues with the
same problem. Also note that if the repair
facility that you select is lacking in
advanced technology, they may be unable
to diagnose problems with newer cars,
meaning you’ve likely gone to the wrong
place.
■ Check if the shop offers a wide range
of services including brake systems and
electrical components. Also check their
hours of operation. See if weekends or
evening repairs would be available. Check
to see if the shop can do warranty repairs
on your car as well. Some facilities may
provide loaner cars or rental cars and some
will provide you with a shuttle to and from
work while your car is being repaired.
■ To ease your peace of mind, make
sure the auto care facility that you choose
offers a good customer satisfaction policy.
You can do your part by giving the
mechanic time to do the job properly.
When choosing a shop, take note of the
condition of the equipment and lighting.
Be aware of the organization and cleanliness as well as the lack of both.
■ Check for the use of brand-name
parts. These parts are engineered to meet
the manufacturer’s specification of the car
and will likely come with a warranty. The
repair facility may also employ repair
technicians who are certified by the
National Institute for Automotive Services
or the ASE. If they do, you will notice that
they display the ASE symbol.
■ Compare the usual services that an
auto repair facility performs such as a
tune-up so that you can find an average
price range. Make sure you are open to
using either a big name franchise or an
independently owned shop.
■ A shop which carries AAA approval
is another good sign. This indicates that
the shop’s customers have been surveyed
and have given the shop an approval rating of 90% or better. In addition, you will
know that they can handle the jobs they
claim they can do.
■ After deciding on a facility, try to
establish a good working relationship with
the mechanic. Keep in mind that preventive maintenance is the goal. You may
consider a trial run with the selected site
such as an oil change or an air conditioning check. Some services are offered free
of charge and can provide you with a good
idea of the service you will receive.

real estate agent
How to:
Choose a Real Estate Agent
The process of deciding who should
represent you in the home buying or selling process is a very personal decision.
Pay close attention to how the Realtor
or real estate agent makes you feel by conducting an initial interview. Is the agent
concerned with meeting your needs as a
home buyer or seller? His or her knowledge of the current housing market and
capability to negotiate a contract are also
important qualities.
Is there a difference between a real
estate agent and a Realtor? The answer is
yes. Not every real estate agent is a
Realtor; however, to obtain the title of
Realtor, the individual must be a licensed
real estate agent. When a real estate agent
becomes a member of the National
Association of Realtors, they earn the title
Realtor.
Upon paying a membership fee to the
NAR, the agent is allowed to attend
industry meetings, receive newsletters and
obtain access to special software programs
and educational tools to help manage
their business.
By choosing a Realtor, a home buyer is
guaranteed to be working with someone
who has been fully trained, has a vast
knowledge of the real estate business, and
is bound by a strict code of ethics.
The best practice in marketing a home
for sale is to gain exposure with advertisements, such as having your home listed on
the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) and
conducting open houses for public viewing of the property. The Realtor you
choose to list your home with should have
open availability to assist you should you
have questions or concerns.
When in the market to buy a home,
your Realtor should have effective communication skills. This will be necessary
when negotiating the price you are willing
to pay for a home, closing costs and any
other important details that may arise.
Regardless of if you are in the market
to buy or sell a home, the comfort level
and confidence you have in your agent is
an important factor. By choosing to be
represented by a Realtor or real estate
agent, you have laid the foundation for a
new relationship.
As with all relationships, you should feel
certain that your Realtor or agent is ethical and willing to fulfill their end of the
commitment.
During the process of locating the best
Realtor for your needs, you may want to
make phone calls to local brokers and they
will connect you to a qualified real estate
professional within their office, or visit the
NAR Web site and do an online search.
This will also insure that you will be
working with a legitimate agent. Asking
around to family and friends for referrals
can also be a way to find a perfect fit.
As with any endeavor in life, knowledge is power. Researching different
aspects of the real estate industry, whether
buying or selling, is just plain smart. From
searching the Web or real estate magazines to find the home of your dreams, to
networking with other buyers or sellers,
you will gain a vast amount of information.
One very valuable Web site that is full
of important real estate facts is
www.Realtor.com. This site was created
for the National Association of Realtors.
The information within is free and very
useful.
Here, you will find detailed lists about
housing statistics and the current market
forecast, along with buying and selling
tips, and much more. This knowledge is
sure to put you on the path to real estate
success.
prepare your home
How to:
How to Prepare Your Home to Sell
Selling your home can be an emotional
decision. Not only does it signal a major
change in your life, but your home has
more memories and feelings attached to it
than other possessions typically do. As
soon as you make the decision to put your
home on the market, though, you need to
look at it from a potential buyer's point of
view. That means setting aside your own
feelings and thinking about your home as
a business person would, trying to market
it to the largest possible pool of buyers.
Take some time to consider the main
points a potential buyer will be looking
for, and make your home fulfill as many of
those requirements as possible. For
starters, buyers are always looking for a
spacious home with ample storage. You
can increase your home's appeal by clearing the clutter from every room. Clutter
obstructs the potential buyer's ability to
see the space your home has to offer.
Page 28
Buyers will look in closets and cabinets. These areas need to be organized so
that it appears that your home has plenty
of storage space. You may have to pack
and store some things in order to create
the a feeling of spaciousness that makes
your home more appealing. Before
prospective buyers begin coming to your
home, you also need to remove the items
that make it very personally yours. If you
have a grouping of family photos or ribbons, trophies, and awards that family
members have earned, you need to pack
those up.
If you happen to collect certain objects
such as cows in the kitchen or sea shells in
the bathroom, pack away those collectibles. Even though items such as these
are not a stationary part of your house,
they can have a negative influence on a
buyer's opinion of the house, because it's
unlikely the buyer will have your exact
same sense of taste.
If you step back and look at your home
from an outsider's point of view, you may
see flaws that need repair. The walls may
not look as pristine as a buyer would like.
A major cleaning may be all that your
walls and floors require, or you may need
to repaint certain areas or have your floors
professionally cleaned.
You need to fix anything that is broken. This includes light fixtures, hinges,
appliances or fixtures such as the sink or
shower door that may be chipped or simply not functioning properly. If a buyers
sees small signs of neglect, they may take
that to mean you neglect things around
the house that could potentially signal
larger problems.
Not only should you take a critical look
at the interior of your home, you need to
also examine the exterior before you put a
sign in front of it letting people who drive
A Leavenworth Times Publication
by know it's for sale. It might even be a
good idea for you to get in your car and
slowly drive by your home in both the
daytime and in the evening to discover
how it would look to someone who is
searching for their dream home.
Once again, small details matter. The
front porch light or any exterior lights
should function properly. Your house
numbers should be visible, and even your
mailbox should look good. The lawn
needs to be mowed or raked, depending
on the season.
If you have a walkway to your front
door, it should not have any cracked stepping stones or plants creeping across it.
Live flowers add beauty to your home's
curb appeal. Dead or dying plants don't.
Garden art can enhance the beauty of
your landscape when kept to a minimum
and when the items compliment the landscape design.

cremation
Why Choose Cremation Services?
These days, cremation services are
becoming more popular. It can be a cost
efficient way of allowing those left behind
the chance to grieve and celebrate your life.
In today's world, more and more families
are choosing a service with you present,
followed by cremation, which offers a
respectful and ceremonious way to commemorate your life. This can bring some
cost-savings to your family since a casket,
vault and grave spaces would not need to
be purchased.
Also, memorial services are popular.
In either case, the thing that is important
to most families is the need to grieve, to
pay tribute, and to celebrate the life lived.
A cremation service will give your family
and friends the time needed to grieve and
come to terms with the death before pro-
viding a lasting memorial in the form of
the urn.
If you are interested in cremation, you
should first learn what is involved in the
process. By learning about cremation, you
will be able to understand what will happen to you or a loved one after they are
gone. A funeral home will be able to
explain the process, along with a breakdown of the cost.
There are many misconceptions about
cremations; however, after talking to your
funeral director, you will be able to understand exactly what the process is all about.
It is important to know in advance so that
you or your loved ones will rest at peace.
You may want to familiarize yourself with
what questions to ask. Most families would
want to know:
Who is caring for our loved one?
Will there be licensed professional to
attend to the cremation? Do you feel comfortable talking with the representatives of
the cremation provider that you are considering? Are they reputable and known
locally to be honest and caring?
Where is the cremation to take place?
You may want to select a provider that
does their own cremations instead of using
an outside contractor or industrial crematory. A cremation provider that owns their
own crematory and does the cremations
on-site guarantees that the cremated
remains returned to the family are correct.
How will our loved one be treated?
You want to have complete confidence
that things are being taken care of in a way
Owned & Operated by the Davis Family for
that you would approve of. The lowest cost
provider may not be able to give you that
peace of mind. Are the people you talk to
respectful, considerate, and caring?
A funeral director will provide you with
options about keeping ashes in the urn
indefinitely or selecting some other final
resting place like a columbarium or cemetery; these are decisions that should be
made with your family and close friends.
While death is not a pleasant subject and
not something that we enjoy planning for,
you need to know that you and your loved
ones have a plan intact whether that day
arrives now or in thirty years.
By choosing cremation and making plans
now, you can rest assured that those you
care about will not be left with making
decisions during their grief.

accountant
How to:
Choose an Accountant
You work hard for your money, and
finding a good accountant means it will
stay protected and work for you.
It's important to make this decision
wisely. The right type of accountant will
help you plan ahead and give you pertinent advice. The wrong type of accountant could actually end up hurting your
finances, so it's worth taking the time to
find the right one.
Certified Public Accountants are
licensed professionals that examine and
organize the financial matters of people
and business. Not only do accountants
need to understand how to crunch numbers, they must also be familiar with many
legal aspects.
This means you can turn to your
accountant to answer questions when
you're considering an important financial
decision. They will be able to tell you the
implications of that decision. In fact, some
accountants are even lawyers.
Many special computer programs and
Internet sites have been a low-cost option
for those who prefer to handle their own
financial affairs. This is especially true during tax season. Many of these programs can
suggest tips about filing that can save or
return more money after filing taxes. The
return can even be filed electronically.
Most of the programs and Web sites
that assist with taxes are very helpful when
the filing requirements are basic. It's when
things get more complicated that an
accountant should be considered. If you
don't fancy digging through government
documents to try to figure out what they
mean, then it's time to get a professional.
If you've made the decision to look for
an accountant, then finding a good one is
important. You'll want to look for someone who has a track record of long-term
relationships and satisfied clients.
The Internet can be of some help. A
simple search can often yield a long list of
accountants in your area. You may even be
able to uncover specific reviews based on
previous client's experiences. Plus, Web
sites can often give you more detailed
information about that specific accountant and their strengths. Your local banker,
attorney, and investment advisor are also
excellent sources of referrals.
Friends and family are another source
to ask for recommendations. Much like a
good mechanic, word-of-mouth tends to
be the ultimate measure of trustworthiness and performance. If someone you
know is already using an accountant they
like, they'll definitely tell you. By referring
you to their own account, they build a
stronger relationship, and both your combined satisfaction will be important to the
accountant.
Finally, the newspaper and phone
book can be some old fashioned, low-tech
sources for discovering accountants.
These type of media really are hit-or-miss,
though. There will be many accountants
side-by-side with many similar messages.
Since they're all competing, it can be
tough to tell which ones are good and
which ones are simply blowing hot air.
You can still make some phone calls and
ask some questions. Try to get references
if you can and don't get pressured into
making a decision over the phone.
No matter what method you use to
find an accountant, be sure to narrow
down a list of the ones you want most. To
narrow it down further, there are a few
Web sites that can help you.
The first is the Better Business Bureau.
Like any other business, accountants can
be listed there. Then, there's The
American Institute of Certified Public
Accountants. If the accountant is a member, they're likely to be held to a higher
ethical standard.
Once you've got a list of accountants,
then meet them in person. Really, you'll
want an accountant you feel comfortable
with. After all, you'll be sharing very sensitive personal financial details. So, go with
the one you like best.
