Simple Fall Home Improvement Ideas
By Daniel Roshard
As summer ends, a lot of homeowners
start to think about the last few home
improvement task they want to carry
out before it starts to get cold and wet
outside. The next few months are perfect
for these last changes and some home
improvement tasks that will make winter a whole lot nicer to spend in your
home.
Gardens are always a big issue with
homeowners. Just before fall hits, a lot
of people who enjoyed the summer in
their garden start to think about what
changes they can make so that it will be
nice to spend time in the garden in the
next few months too. It usually means
that you will need to move some of the
plants and position any sitting chairs
and table you have closer to the house. It
also means that you will want to create
as much open space in your garden as
you possibly can, so it will be easy for
you to dispose of the all the gifts fall
brings with it.
It is not too late to check your roof and
see if you should make any improvements before the rain starts pouring
down on the house. In many areas, homeowners do a routine check to the roof to
make sure they know what the situation
is up there before the winter starts. This
sometimes calls for professional help so
you may want to think about costs before
doing that.
The kitchen is one place you
will want to make some home
improvement changes. During the winter months, the
kitchen becomes the heart
of the house and there is
no doubt that making
necessary changes in the
kitchen will make life
nicer and easier. From
t he k itchen cabi net s
to the counter tops, a
kitchen can be upgraded
easily with some thought
and creativeness.
Another thing you can do
is paint your walls. A minor
home improvement trick that
makes your house look new and
clean, it does not take a lot of time
to do and the outcome is almost always
enjoyable.
The last thing you would want to do
before winter starts is examine your window shutters. If you have wood shutters
you can simply purchase some paint and
apply a new color to them, changing the
ter against rain. When checking your
shutters, you can also make sure that
they are well placed and are in good
condition. Changing shutters is not a
big deal and is not very pricy either
so it is better to find out that you
need to replace a broken shutter
before you have an emergency
on your hands.
With a few minor checks
and some home improvement tasks, your house
will be ready for winter. The nice thing is
t hat once you f i n ish
w it h a l l t he se home
improvement tasks you
will have time to start
organizing your home
from the inside, but that
is a very distinctive winter
home improvement task.

By implementing a few
simple gardening techniques
to your garden in the fall you
can help nurture a healthier
vegetable garden that’s enriched and revitalized when
the spring growing season
rolls around. You’ll also
enjoy the benefits of a more
productive vegetable patch
and harvest fresh produce far
earlier and with less effort.
The first step is to shift
some of the routine gardening tasks that you normally
perform in the springtime,
and instead take care of them
during the fall. At the end
of your summer growing
season, clear out all of the
weeds, garden debris, spent
vines and any left over fruits
and vegetables that weren’t
harvested.
This “garden-cleaning”
will speed spring cultivation
work, eliminate left over
fruits and vegetables whose
seeds can turn into unwanted
volunteers next summer, prevent weeds from becoming
established during autumn
and reduce the likelihood
that insect pests and diseases
spend the winter nice and
comfy in your garden beds.
Cultivating the Soil in
Autumn
Autumn is also a great time
to apply and incorporate
compost, mushroom soil or
even leaves into the garden
beds. This will give the organic soil amendments additional time to break down or
mellow, and will also reduce
the risk of burning or overfertilizing young seedlings
in the spring.
If you till or cultivate your
garden in the fall, do so very
shallowly to avoid bringing
weed seeds that were buried

Not interested in fall vegetable production? Well how
about planting a cover crop,
also known as a green manure, to protect and enrich
your garden’s soil over the
winter, as well as to crowd
out weed growth? There’s a
long list of crops that can be
planted as a fall cover crop
and remain in place until
they are turned under to enrich the soil in the spring. A
few choices include annual

Fall Mulches for the

Think it’s too late for you
to sow a cover crop in your
garden? Well at the very least
you can cover the garden
during fall and winter with
activity. The leaves can be
incorporated into the soil in
the spring, or be removed

Fourteen Simple Indulgences For Autumn
By Susie Cortright
As the kids go back to school, you can go back
to you: your schedule, your friends, your goals.
Here are 14 simple indulgences to celebrate
this season.
1. Grab a friend and set out for a brisk autumn
hike in the prettiest area you can think of within
a few minutes of your home. On your walk,
make an agreement with your friend to neither
gossip nor complain. See what new conversations arise under these guidelines.
2. Invite your girlfriends over for a Back to
School tea. Have lots of “pamper me” items
in hand. Do you (or any of your friends) know
a massage therapist? Ask her to come and do
backrubs. Eat decadent pastries and drink coffee
or tea. Catch up on everything you may have
missed during the hectic summer.
3. Start a circle journal to keep in touch with
your friends. A circle journal (aka. “a round
robin”) is a book that goes back and forth among
friends, each of whom adds a special contribution before passing it on. You can use a simple
notebook and ask each contributor to add her
favorite photos to a collage on the cover.
4. Treat yourself to a new magazine subscription.
5. Buy three copies of your favorite novel. Give
one copy to your best friend, one to your mother
and one to your mother-in-law. You will trigger
an interesting book discussion (or an enriching
tradition of book swapping).
6. Invite over your neighbors for a steaming
cup of hot mulled cider.
7. Take out a simple piece of paper and tell a
relative whom you do not expect to see during
Thanksgiving all the reasons that you are grateful for him or her. Mail it.
8. Bring the warmth of the coming season
to your dining room table with a fall bouquet
of fresh flowers. Choose an arrangement with
vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange.
9. What are you most passionate about? Start
a home business that somehow relates to this
passion. Autumn is a great time of year to get a
business started. The kids are back in school and
the hustle of the holidays has not yet begun.
10. Find a book club to join, or start one of
your own.
11. Make a quick mini photo album of your
most treasured summer photographs.
12. Choose a charity that you and your family
will support this season. Researching the charity
will be a fun family activity, and then you can
brainstorm all the ways you can raise money for
this organization.
13. Know a good soup restaurant? Order takeout tonight. Make sure to include fresh bread!
14. Challenge yourself to offer a sincere compliment to each person you speak with today.
Work on weaving the kind words into each
conversation. Such a habit will transfer a feeling
of goodwill to everyone around you, and it may
help you overcome shyness. After all, now you
always have something to say!
Now make up your own simple indulgences
and bring the magic of the season to your every
day.
