How to compile
the retirement
pension application

This information should only be used as a reference
guide. Certain specific circumstances might not be
included. We have tried to ensure that this booklet will
include all relevant information available at the time of
publication.
You will only receive one pension from the Social
Security even though you might qualify for two
pensions. You will only be paid the pension with the
higher rate.
If you qualify for a Social Security pension and for
benefits related to sickness or unemployment you will
only receive either the pension or the sickness or the
unemployment allowance. You will only be paid the
pension or allowance attracting the higher rate.
The Department of Social Security collects all relevant
personal information to provide its services to
individuals who qualify for assistance, allowance or
pensions in accordance with the Social Security Act
(Cap. 318). The Department may verify the information
submitted by you in line with article 133 (b) of the
Social Security Act to ensure the accuracy in relation
to your claim.
Personal data may be disclosed to departments or
third parties, who may have access to your data as
authorised by law.
The Department may also exchange the personal
information with benefits institutions of other countries
to combat and deter fraud, as provided for in
international treaties or bilateral agreements to which
Malta is a party. You will be informed in due course of
the result of your claim after it has been assessed.

Retirement age
If you were born:
on or before the 31 December 1951, you will
be able to retire on reaching the age of 60 for
women and 61 for men
between 1952 and 1955, you can retire on
reaching the age of 62
between 1956 and 1958, you can retire on
reaching the age of 63
between 1959 and 1961, you can retire on
reaching the age of 64
on or after the 1 January 1962, you will be
able to retire on reaching the age of 65
If you:
reached 61 years of age, was born between
1952 and 1961 and have at least 1,820 (35
years) paid or credited contributions
or
reached 61 years of age, was born on or after
1962 and have at least 2,080 (40 years) paid
or credited contributions
you have the option of retiring at the age of 61.

You should apply at least 3 months before
reaching the retirement age in accordance with
your requirements but not later than 6 months
after reaching the retirement age,.

Personal details
You will find your personal details on the left hand
side of page 1 of the application (1. PERSONAL
DETAILS).
Check that these details are correct. Should you
find any missing or incorrect information, you
should insert the correct details on the right hand
side of the page.
You may also find that all your personal details are
missing from the left hand side of the page. In this
case insert all the required details on the right
hand side of the page.
The personal details are the following:
your identity card number
your Social Security number
name
surname
your address
your status - if your status on the left hand side
is missing or incorrect, you should mark one of

whether you are
single
married
separated and provide alimony to your
spouse or
separated and do not provide alimony
to your spouse
your date of birth
your phone number - if you do not have a phone
leave this space empty

Service pension
On the lower part of the first page of the
application, you should insert any pension or
allowance that you are receiving or expecting to
receive for a service rendered to a person or
company you were employed with in Malta or
abroad.
If you are receiving or expecting to receive a
pension for a service rendered, by a private
company in Malta or abroad, it is important to
attach documentation indicating the amount of
receivable pension.
What is the service pension?
A service pension is a pension or other allowance
provided to an individual who is paid by or on
behalf of the employer for services previously
provided in Malta or abroad. The service pension
should in all cases be provided on a noncommutated basis. When an individual is
receiving two or more service pensions, only the
highest service pension will be taken in
consideration for estimation, review or reevaluation of the retirement pension. However all
claimants are obliged to insert every service
pension being received or expected to be
received.

Past employment
Details related to your employment can be found
on the left hand side of page 2 of the application
(2. PAST EMPLOYMENT DETAILS).
Check that these details are correct. Should you
find any missing or incorrect information you
should insert the correct details on the right hand
side of the page in the box marked Details
showing when and where you worked (even
abroad).
You may also find that all the details are missing
from the left hand side of the page. In this case
insert all the required details on the right hand
side of the page in the box marked Details
showing when and where you worked (even
abroad).
The employment details are the following:
name (or names) of your employers
the employment starting year for every
specific post and employment you had
the employment termination year for every
specific post and employment you had
If you were a self-empoyed person during all your
employment insert SELF-OCCUPIED PERSON in
the column marked ‘Employment’, the
employment starting year in the column marked
’From’ and the employment termination year in the

column marked ’To’.
If you were a self-empoyed person for a period of
time and an employee for another period of time
insert the name of your employer and SELFOCCUPIED PERSON in the column marked
‘Employment’ in the order of employment together
with the employment starting year in the column
marked ‘From’ and the employment termination
year in the column marked ‘To’, for every period in
which you where employed or self-employed.
If the information on the left hand side is missing
or incorrect, you are requested to regularise your
position with the Employment and Training
Corporation by informing them of all your past
employments.
In the same section of the application (2. PAST
EMPLOYMENT DETAILS), you should also insert
the following on the left hand side in the final lower
part:
your Social Security number in the country in
which you were employed, if you worked
abroad
If you never worked aboad leave this part empty.

Continuation of employment
On the lower part of page 2 of the application you
will find another section entitled 3.
DECLARATION OF CONTINUATION OF
EMPLOYMENT AFTER RETIREMENT AGE.
Tick as required:

if you will continue in full time employment
if you will continue in part time employment
if you will continue in self-occupied part time
or full time employment.
If you will be retiring from employment leave this
section empty.

Paid contributions
On page 3 of the application you will find the
section entitled 4. PAID CONTRIBUTION SALARIES - INCOME FOR SELF-OCCUPIED..
This section should be completed by your
employer or by yourself if self-employed.
This section should not be completed if you reside
abroad.
On the left hand side of this section you will find
the following details:
the number of Social Security contributions
paid till the year in which you applied for the
pension
the year in which you applied for the pension
Social Security contribution history for the
last 10 years
income statement for the last 10 years
If the information on the left hand side is missing

or incorrect, you are requested to insert the
correct details on the right hand side.
In the same section of the application, on the
lower right hand side you should:

mark the appropriate box on whether you are
a Company Director or have any shares
(YES or NO)
Bank account details
On page 3 of the application you will find the
section entitled 5. BANK ACCOUNT DETAILS.
On the left hand side of this section you will find
the following details:
the name of the bank in which you will
deposit your pension
the account number in which you will deposit
your pension
If the information on the left hand side is missing
or incorrect, you are requested to insert the
correct details on the right hand side.
The pension has to be deposited in a savings or
current account but not in a loan account. The
indicated account should be:

in the name of the pension claimant
or in the name of either spouse when the
claimant is married
or in the name of both spouses when the
claimant is married
Declaration
On page 3 of the application you will find the
section entitled 6. DECLARATION.

read the declaration carefully
sign the declaration
insert the date in which you will be sending
your application by post or the date in which
you will be handing in your application at the
Department of Social Security office.
Required documentation
Attach the following documents to your
application:
The marriage certificate if you are married
and your marriage is not registered with the
Public Registry of Malta. There is no need to
attach the marriage certificate if your
marriage is registered with the Public
Registry of Malta.
documentation indicating the Social Security
paid contributions and income earned in the
last two years before your application for

pension
Documents indicating the service pension
amount or allowance if you receive or expect
ot receive a service pension (see page 7).
Read carefully the Data Protection Declaration
found at the bottom of page 4 of the application.

What to do with the
application?
Our employees will be available, at the nearest
district office, to help you compile your application
should you have any difficulty with the said
application.
Once you have properly completed it:
give the application to our staff at the nearest
district office (see page 14)
