How to use Microsoft VPN ? Date: march 2007 Author: Boris van Es Version: 1.1 Case: I’m using a standard desktop and want to set up a VPN connection to another VLAN. Procedure: Action: First make sure there is a Rasphone.pbk file. If not… create the folders and the file. The file can be an empty text file. Action: Creating the path H:\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections \Pbk Create folder: Network Create folder: Connections Create folder: Pbk Action: creating the empty file “rasphone.pbk” First open notepad, than save the file according the depicted figure. Action: Ready to configure a VPN connection. Action: Select “create a new connection” to create a new VPN connection. Action: Select as depicted. Action: Select as depicted. Action: Type a name that suits you. This is the name the VPN connection will get. Action: Select as depicted. Action: Select as depicted. Action: Select properties. Information: The properties from a VPN connection. Information: When connecting to Microsoft environments choose “include Windows logon domain” Information: Typical settings will usually work. Please ask the administrator, who provides you the VPN service, for specific setting. Note: the TU Service Desk cannot help you with these settings. (there are too much dependicies regarding the vpn service provider) Information: Again…. Please contact your vpn service provider for exact settings. Usually the defaults will work. Information: For default gateway settings choose as depicted. Information: For default gateway settings choose as depicted. Information: This is an important setting !!! Usually this setting is not required. (not using the default gateway on the remote network) However… if the remote network is routed… you’ll need this setting. Otherwise you are connected but cannot access resources on the remote network. But…. If you use this setting…your routing on the TU network will not function. So you might need to reconfigure the Windows XP routing table in this case. If this is the case please contact the VPN service provider. Again, the ServiceDesk cannot help you. Information: If everything worked out fine, you can connect. You’ll see the VPN is connected. Please disconnect when finished using your remote connection !!!
