is dedicated to the memory of Keegan Bannon. Keegan was an
extraordinary young man who very unexpectedly passed away February
17, 2010. When reflecting on Keegan’s life, what was most important
to him, next to friends and family, were five things: academics—he was
number one in his class; sports— he was a varsity athlete every year;
music—he had been active in band since fifth grade; activities—he
enjoyed studying a foreign language and student government; and
“marching to his own beat, making his own path.” Doing what was
right, not just what was popular. Keegan led by example and left
a lasting legacy at Central High School.
In Keegan’s honor, a scholarship was created to reward a graduating Central
High School college-bound senior. The recipient will receive a specially
designed medallion, a certificate, and an unrestricted $2,000 scholarship.

There are those who are talented in athletics and
academics. Some are kind and respected by their peers.
But it is a true rarity to find a single person who embodies
each of these traits. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to know
Keegan Bannon.
We met in sixth grade band at Edison Middle School
and I was immediately aware of his determined attitude and
his kind friendship. As we progressed through high school,
I found him to be far more than just a committed student,
athlete, and musician; he was very involved and talented
in everything he did. He was a fantastic saxophonist, but
his best talent was his ability to put a smile on the face of
every person he talked to. He was incredibly involved in
academics and clubs, but his truest involvement came in his
dedication to a variety of friendships. He was determined to
win on the tennis courts, but he was even more determined
to gain respect from all who knew him.
The Keegan Bannon Memorial Scholarship’s purpose
is to reward a senior for excellence in academics, fine arts,
and athletics. But perhaps its most important value is to
acknowledge a determined, talented, and involved spirit not
just toward education, but to life and all it offers. Receiving
this award is not about proving yourself in all that you do.

It’s about living like Keegan—living ordinary
moments right. And it is through these ordinary
moments that we truly make a difference.
—Kathryn Ikenberry
“Keegan taught us all how to live a life to
the fullest;
he packed more into his 18 years than many people do in 50. Keegan
always pushed himself to give his best and to get the most out of every experience. ‘Carpe
diem’ was more than a phrase to Keegan; it was the way he lived his life. When it came to my
relationship with Keegan, it was often confusing as to who was the teacher and who was the
student. I may have been older than Keegan, but I never stopped learning from him.”
