1 HELPFUL HINTS FOR USING SHO-ALL SIGN MAKING PRODUCTS Sign making is probably the most important element of a good merchandising plan. That is why I have included the topic in virtually every presentation I have ever given. You’ll also find it covered in each of my video series. I think you’ll agree that a customer must be provided with enough information at the point-of-sale to compare products and make a buying decision. As a merchandiser, it is your responsibility to see that sufficient information is provided in your displays for every product that you sell. In recent years, the process of making signs has been transformed to the desktop. As in other areas of publishing, expensive, dedicated publishing equipment has been replaced by a personal computer. Today, anyone with a computer and printer can produce professional looking signage. To help you with the process, I have added numerous sign making products to the Ingles’ Sho-All line. This booklet is provided as a “quick start” tutorial. It won’t be long before you are making effective, professional signage on your own desktop. 2 Template Software Why waste time? If you want to get started quickly, use the Ingles’ Sho-All page templates disk. There’s a pre-formatted software template for every Sho-All sign paper. To use the templates you will need one of the popular word processing, page layout, or illustration programs listed below: For Windows: Microsoft Word 2.0 or later, PageMaker 5.0 or later, or CorelDRAW 5.0 or later. For Mac: Microsoft Word 5.0 or later, PageMaker 5.0 or later, or QuarkXPress 3.3 or later. All sign cards are formatted onto a standard 8.5”x11” sheet with micro perforation for easy and clean separation into the different sign sizes. The heavy card stock is compatible with most printers/copiers. Use Only Three Sign Sizes: to minimize inventory nightmares limit your main signage to only three standard sizes. This will also reduce the number of different sign holders you will need to have. 1.25” x 3” Horizontal Tickets: great for accessories and items that only need a brief “primary feature” description. 3.5” x 5.5” Horizontal Signs: popular size for major products that require multiple “feature with benefit” listings. 8.5” x 11” Horizontal Signs: this 21-up large size sign is excellent for 1.25 x 3 Tickets product that requires a lot of information. Multi-product 4-up packages also require this larger 3.5 x 5.5 Signs sign size. Or, use them to highlight specials, sign closeout bins, and announce policies. Single 8.5 x 11 Signs 5 ;; ;; Tips for Selecting Sign Papers You will find that an extensive inventory of various sign border designs will provide unlimited flexibility. The preprinted borders turn otherwise drab black printing into colorful finished signs. Here’s a review of just a few possibilities using Ingles’ Sho-All border papers. Main Border Choice: choose your favorite design and use it throughout your store, at all sizes for a coordinated look. Having a consistent design also makes it easier for the customer to find the information. Choose one design, order all three sizes. Gift Idea Borders: for those special gift giving times like Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Graduation. No need to print special holiday signs. Sale Borders: excellent for inventory cleanup, when you are not having a storewide sale. Keep plenty on hand to quickly set up special merchandise. Makes it possible to mark a single item or the entire store. Christmas Borders: easily convert your displays for holiday merchandising. Highlight your best seasonal items. Order Christmas borders early and prepare signage well in advance. @;ÀÀ@; 6 TEMPORARILY OUT OF STOCK Out-of-Stock Cards: simplifies the stocking and reordering process. Once you have filled in the appropriate information, anyone can restock the displays or reorder the products. Choose preprinted for write-in format, or blank for your own choice of information. Arrows & Circle Attention Getters: can be strategically placed to highlight special merchandise, or draw attention to special product features. Eye-popping color gets attention. Mount with SA-630 Twist Tabs. Sign Extenders: why waste time making a completely new sign for a sale or closeout items. With the extender you simply “add” your sale, closeout, or other information to any existing 3.5” high sign. Fits all standard holders. The “preprinted” extenders can be used at a moment’s notice. The blanks can be printed with a storewide promotional background before imprinting. Why wait for a storewide sale? Have your own sale – tomorrow! Item Brand Description Catalog # Stock Qty. Possibly you have established a store “look” or have store colors that you want in your signs. Some may want to build a unique sign border design around the store logo. Consider the many other creative possibilities. Build special event borders as you need them throughout the year. The pre-perforated sheets make it cost effective to print just a few sheets at the local quick print. Or, use one of the new low cost color ink jet printers to print color signs – one sheet at a time. Blank sign papers are available in packages of 50 sheets. But, for those that want to buy in larger quantities, most Sho-All blanks are also available by the ream (250 sheets). 8 Create your own store border designs Making Header Signs: - both letter (8.5”x11”) and legal (8.5”x14”) size blank papers are available from Sho-All. Besides using the letter size for the larger sign format, you can use these sheets to create header signage for your displays. No sign project is complete without sign holders. Make it a rule in your store to never tape or pin a sign to the display. That’s tacky! To begin, limiting your signs to just three sizes (as suggested prior) will require only three standard size holders (1.25” x 3”, 3.5” x 5.5”, & 8.5” x 11”) - all horizontal. Here’s a few other considerations that you should address when choosing holders. Large 8.5” x 11” Holders: use a clear front holder. Large signs tend to sag and roll out of open front sign holders. Use Hooks with Label Holders: accessories and product that hang on a hook need signs too. Use a “scanner” type hook that features a label holder for customer information. This keeps all information up front, where it is easy to see and compare. Beware of Hang Tags: signs that dangle by a string or pouch are hard to see. Customers must exert extra effort to find the information. Instead use holders mounted to the wall or display, adjacent to each product. Each pole clip will stretch as necessary to fit various diameters. Easel Adapter: convert any sign holder to a freestanding holder with the SA-606 easel mounting device. Great for counter tops, shelves, display cases or for simply placing signs on top of larger items. Use the easel adapter to place signs on top of larger items BE PREPARED! The Sho-All modular sign system makes it easy to be ready for any signing need in your store. Simply keep an inventory of the 12 three different sign holders sizes on hand. Add to that a good inventory of each of the different mounting clips, including easels and plenty of scanner hooks. Then no matter what the application, you will be able to assemble a holder and mounting device to fit your need. When mounting a sign holder to slatwall, you can use either the SA-605 Pegboard/ Slatwall clip, or the SA-604 Basket clip Some Ingles’ Sho-All shelves and display holders include their own ticket holder that fit standard 1.25” x 3” ticket/signs 13 There’s more . . . Ingles’ Sho-All offers even more to assist you with your sign making duties. Here’s some handy tips and accessories that should prove very useful. Add A Shelf Front Sign Channel: place SA-624 or SA-625 Long Sign Channel along the entire length of a shelf front, or Add strips of in a display case. Cut the color paper channel to length and use the backing adhesive strips to secure it. Add a strip of colored paper for “eye appeal.” The continuous channel eliminates the need for individual sign holders, and makes it possible to insert your sign cards anywhere along the shelf. How to Secure Rack Header Signs: at the top of any display rack you can use SA-638 Sign Grippers. The sign grippers have soft rubber teeth that grip your header sign cards and keep them in place. The grippers will accommodate two signs back-to-back, as well as SA-625 Sign Channel. To attach your header sign cards to the face of the slatwall, use the SA-661 Slatwall Connectors. This eliminates the need to drill holes or cause other damage to your display. 14 Use the SA-635 Ceiling Clips when you want to hang your header sign cards above the display. They are easy to attach to standard ceiling T-bar, and their clear color means they blend-in. How to Make a Changeable Header Sign: use SA-625 Long Sign Channel, cut-to-length, for flexible, easy to make header signs. With the channel serving as a sign holder, you can use signage printed from your computer’s printer and eliminate the need to mount your printer’s output on heavier cardboard. This makes it easy to make, and change, your header signs as you need them. Remember to use the SA-661 Slatwall connectors when mounting the sign channel to the slatwall face. This makes it possible to move your header signs without damage to the slatwall finish. How to Get Attention: when you need to draw attention to a certain product, or an important product feature, use a SA-630 Twist Tab Holder. These pliable mounts make it possible to add a message in places that have not been possible before. Combine the Twist Tabs with the SA-6521 Arrow Cards and SA-6531 Circle Cards for an eye-catching, strategically placed message. 15 More “Cool Stuff” from Ingles’ Sho-All • DISPLAY FIXTURES - 4-ways, gondolas, wire grid, book racks • INSTRUMENT HOLDERS display holders for horns, string instruments, guitars, keyboards • DISPLAY ACCESSORIES specialty holders for music accessories, baskets, shelves, literature holders, grid accessories, accessory hooks • SECURITY PRODUCTS - theft deterrent cables, security enclosures • OTHER COOL STUFF - contemporary design shopping bags, merchandising training videos KAMAN MUSIC CORP.
