Herbal Adaptogens:
Modifying the Stress Response
•  Adaptogens are defined as non-toxic substances that have a normalizing effect on the
body and elicit a non-specific response to stress and a wide variety of stressors.
•  This means that we can’t really sum up the action of the herb by describing a single,
particular mechanism.
•  By normalizing the hormonal feedback signals associated with the HPA (hypothalamus,
pituitary and adrenal glands) axis, adaptogens help enhance general resistance to
stress, whether the stress is of physical, psychological, chemical, or biological origin.
•  At their core, adaptogens appear to normalize the functional response to stress,
whether the response is excessive or deficient. This action is referred to as amphoteric.
•  Adaptogens usually have a balancing effect.

We use white Asian Ginseng roots.
White, uncured roots are simply dried and
then extracted; red, cured roots are steamcooked then dried. Red cured root is
considered more “yang” & “heating” than
white, uncured root. White, uncured root is
suitable to more types of people, as it is
considered neither heating nor cooling.
