Lexile & Reading Counts
What is Lexile?
Lexile Reader Measu
re: represents a person’s
reading ability on the Le
xile scale, measured by tak
ing
the Scholastic Reading In
ventory (SRI) in Shoreline
.
Lexile Text Measure:
represents a text’s difficult
y
level on the Lexile scale.
A Lexile text measure is
based
on two predictors of how
difficult a text is to
comprehend: word frequ
ency and sentence length
.
Reading Counts is an
independent reading incentive
program. Students can read books
that they find interesting (and are
generally close to their Lexile level)
and then take a test to measure their
understanding.
*Check with your child’s teacher for
expectations for Reading Counts in
his/her classroom.
How to find books by Lexile
Lexile levels on books
do not take into account
the content or intended
audience.
Lexile is one way to
choose books. Students
learn many ways to find
“just right” books.
We want students to
read, learn, enjoy and
understand the books
they are reading.
When searching for books
within a Lexile range, there are
many tools available. However,
because Lexile only looks at
word frequency and sentence
length, readers and families
need to be selective when
choosing books.
Te a ch e r s a n d t e a ch e rlibrarians show students several
methods for choosing good
books based on their interests
and their abilities, both for their
reading pleas ure and for
schoolwork.
Lexile measures help teachers
and student find books that may be
best for comprehending text.
Students also will check out a
variety of books for reading for
enjoyment, based on their interests
and not just on Lexile levels.
