Self Made
Tuesday 18th October

Newsreel 1 - Plus Q&A
Tuesday 01st November
Dir: Gillian Wearing
Starring: Sam Rumbelow,
Asheq Akhtar, Lesley Robinson
UK 2011, 88mins
Dir: Alex Reuben
Documentary
UK 2011, 100mins approx.
SELF MADE is the debut
documentary feature from
Turner Prize winning artist Gillian
Wearing. Filmed on location in
Newcastle it followed adverts
asking the public: “If you were to
play a part in a film, would you be
yourself or a fictional character?”
Successful applicants were cast,
undertaking a method workshop
and subsequently featured in
the final film. Wearing makes
the provocation that in a world
where CCTV, reality television
and “fictionalised” documentary
make us all into performers, reality
and fiction are interchangeable
commodities. Are we all
playing a role, consciously or
unconsciously?
Following on from his acclaimed
ROUTES: DANCING TO NEW
ORLEANS (2008), Alex Reuben’s
NEWSREEL 1 is the first in a new
series of NEWSREELS for cinemas.
NEWSREEL 1 is London turned
inside out. A treasure hunt
navigated by dance, sound, rivers
and improvisation. Produced with
the tight turnaround that digital
production allows, the film is
created right up to the moment
of projection. Cultural, social and
political events are filmed by
Reuben – the motion of marching
bodies, improvised music, dance
and live art - to create vibrant, lifeaffirming cinema.

WE ARE POETS
Sunday 02nd October
Dirs: Alex Ramseyer-Bache &
Daniel Lucchesi
Documentary
UK 2011, 80mins
06 SHEFFIELD DOC/FEST ON TOUR
It may be the age of Facebook
and Twitter but a group of Leeds
teenagers have chosen to define
themselves through one of the
most ancient forms of culture
out there: the spoken poem.The
poems in question aren’t any old
poems, they are anguished, witty,
full-throated diatribes, voicing the
concerns of a generation of multiethnic British teenagers. Brave
New Voices, the most prestigious
poetry slam competition in
America, has chosen Leeds
Young Authors to represent
the UK at their upcoming
competition in Washington DC.
Sheffield-based filmmakers Alex
Ramseyer-Bache and Daniel
Lucchesi follow the group as they
prepare for a transformational
journey of a lifetime. With a
mix of cinematically crafted
lyrical sequences and raw,
intimate actuality, WE ARE POETS
challenges our understanding of
youth by giving them the stage,
allowing them the chance to
speak for themselves. Anyone
tempted to dismiss today’s
teenagers as politically apathetic
layabout’s better pay heed: this
is electrifying evidence to the
contrary.
To be followed by a Q&A by the
film’s directors.
The Interrupters
Wednesday 05th Oct
15
Dirs: Steve James &
Alex Kotlowitz
Documentary
US 2011, 128mins
Shot over the course of one year,
The Interrupters are: Ameena,
Cobe and Eddie, each has their
own story featuring a history of
violence and gang activity.These
“violence interrupters” (their job
title) use their own personal
experiences and street credibility
to work in the communities,
interjecting where violence is
prone to erupting and working
with families to stop the infection
and spread.Their work and their
insights are informed by their own
journeys, which, as each of them
points out, defy characterisation.
“THE INTERRUPTERS is a
heavyweight film about a
heavyweight subject of clear
interest well beyond the United
States.” Sight and Sound
You’ve Been Trumped
Tuesday 25th October
Dir: Anthony Baxter
Documentary
UK 2011, 95mins
His terrible toupee might be a
joke, but to residents of the Menie
estate on the northeast coast
of Scotland, Donald Trump is no
laughing matter.The flamboyant
billionaire businessmen is
determined to build the world’s
greatest golf coast on their land,
complete with a massive luxury
hotel.The proposal should be
preposterous – this is one of
Britain’s very last stretches of
wilderness, and a protected
conservation area. But the
Scottish government, desperate
to bring jobs to the region, have
overturned its own environmental
laws to give Trump the green light.
Now Trump is running roughshod
over anyone left in his path.
Give Up Tomorrow
Saturday 10th Dec –
International Human
Rights Day (Date TBC)
Dir: Michael Collins
Documentary
US/UK 2011, 95mins
When the Chiong sisters were
raped and murdered on an island
in the Philippines in 1997, the
police were under pressure to act
fast. Soon they had arrested and
charged seven young men with
the horrendous crime. Amongst
them was Paco Larranaga, a
Filipino-Spanish student training to
be a chef. In fact, he sat his exams
on the very day the girls were
abducted, 350 miles away. Despite
42 witnesses signing affidavits as
to his whereabouts, the police
interviewed none of them and
Paco was sentenced to death.
Director Michael Collins skilfully
captures the many twists and
turns of Paco’s story, in the process
exposing the farcical sham that
constitutes the Filipino justice
system.
SHEFFIELD DOC/FEST ON TOUR 07
Apocalypse Now
Saturday 24th September
15
Dir: Francis Ford Coppola
Starring: Marlon Brando,
Robert Duvall, Martin Sheen,
Dennis Hopper
US 1979, 147mins
“No deleted scenes or unseen
Sheen, just a straight remaster
and reissue for the relatively
lean, unrelentingly mean
original cut of Coppola’s
massive man-on-a-mission
masterpiece.” Time Out
A heady mix of ‘60s counterculture and the Vietnam
War meshes together with
hallucinatory visuals and a
magnificent score. Martin Sheen
stars as the Special Forces
captain dispatched on a secret
river-borne mission to Cambodia
with a brief to ‘terminate with
extreme prejudice’ a demented
colonel (Brando) waging a
private war in the hills.

Mark Kermode: The Good,
the Bad and the Multiplex
Monday 03rd October
Reading, Q&A and book signing
featuring Mark Kermode
150mins approx.
Tickets: £12 - £15
If blockbusters make money
no matter how bad they are,
why not make a good one for
a change? How can 3-D be the
future of cinema when it’s been
giving audiences a headache
for over a hundred years? Why
pay to watch films in cinemas
which don’t have a projectionist
but do have a fast-food stand?
All pretty terrific questions and if
any of them sound familiar to you
then this is the event for you. We’re
pretty incredibly excited to be
welcoming Mark Kermode back
to the Picture House for what
promises to be a fearless ride into
the belly of the beast with the
sole purpose of asking this one
question: ‘What’s wrong with the
modern movie business – and
how can we make it right?’
Just Do It: A Tale of
Modern Day Outlaws
Tuesday 11th Oct - 6:30pm
12A
Dir: Emily James
Documentary Feat:
James Leadbitter (narrator)
UK 2011, 90mins
The world of environmental direct
action has been a secretive one,
until now. With unprecedented
access, Emily James spent over a
year embedded in activist groups
such as Climate Camp and
Plane Stupid and documented
their clandestine activities.
Torpedoing the tired clichés of
the environmental movement,
JUST DO IT introduces you to a
powerful cast of mischievous and
inspiring characters who put their
bodies in the way.They super-glue
themselves to bank trading floors,
blockade factories and attack
coal power stations en-masse,
all despite the very real threat
of arrest.Their adventures will
entertain, illuminate and inspire.
Followed by a Q&A with the
film’s director.

Adam Buxton presents
BUG: The Evolution of
Music Video
Monday 17th Oct - 9pm
Featuring: Adam Buxton
Tickets: £15/£12.50
90mins approx. bugvideos.co.uk
Fictions of Every Kind is Leeds’
own DIY writers’ social night. It is
run by writers, for writers, and is
non-profit. Our aim is to give all
writers - whether established or
newbie - support, encouragement,
and food for thought.
September’s event, in
collaboration with the Hyde
Park Picture House, presents an
adaptation of the work of one
of the great writers of the 20th
Century, JG Ballard. Ballard’s work
presents to the reader dystopian
futures, challenging us to think
about consumerist society, war,
and environmental destruction. An
adaptation of his breakthrough
novel, EMPIRE OF THE SUN, in part
a memoir of a childhood spent in
Shanghai, will be shown as part of
this programme.
Come feast your eyes – and, of
course, your ears - on an evening
of awe-inspiring music videos,
astounding online nuggets and
a unique brand of sit down
comedy with Adam Buxton comedian, writer, broadcaster,
video director, general music
video enthusiast and YouTube
comment wrangler. Following
a sell-out run at the Edinburgh
Fringe, Adam presents a selection
of his favourite music videos from
the BUG shows at London’s BFI
Southbank over the past year,
along with some delightfully
unbalanced commentary from
the YouTube community, all
interspersed with some gems of
his own making.

When Eva puts her career
ambitions aside to give birth to
Kevin so begins their strained
relationship. At 15 years old, Kevin
escalates the stakes when he
commits a horrifying act, leaving
Eva to grapple with her feelings
of grief and responsibility, as well
as the ire of the community-atlarge. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT
KEVIN (based on Lionel Shriver’s
Winner of the 2005 Orange Prize
for Fiction) explores nature vs.
nurture on a whole new level as
Eva’s own culpability is measured
against Kevin’s innate evilness.
Ramsay’s masterful storytelling
simultaneously combines a
provocative moral ambiguity
with a satisfying and compelling
narrative, which builds to a
chilling, unforgettable climax.
In a bold new feature version
of JANE EYRE, Fukunaga
(SIN NOMBRE) has infused a
contemporary immediacy into
Charlotte Brontë’s timeless tale.
The story begins with Jane Eyre
fleeing Thornfield House and her
role as governess for wealthy
Edward Rochester. As she reflects
upon the people and emotions
that have defined her, it is clear
that the isolated and imposing
residence – and Mr. Rochester’s
coldness – have sorely tested
the young woman’s resilience,
forged years earlier when she
was orphaned. She must now
act decisively to secure her own
future and come to terms with
the past that haunts her and the
terrible secret that Mr. Rochester
is hiding.
