(A) The structure for the shower is made on level ground from eight 8 foot fence posts
each sunk 16 inches into the ground and topped with PVC pipe and a heavy gauge wire to
form an upper edge. The shower platform is made of treated wood and both the platform
and the dressing area have Astroturf surface areas. (B) A showerhead tops a pipe with
water from warm and cool sources that can be regulated.
(C) To heat water, a 55 gallon metal drum filled with water sits on a (D) cinderblock foundation with a propane burner. Twenty feet of copper tubing goes through the 55 gallon
drum and then to heat resistent tubing that leads to the shower head. (E) A 4 x 8 foot
sheet of heat resistent insulation serves to conserve heat in the metal drum.

(F) 10 ml. black plastic is draped over the walls with the upper section of plastic held together with spray adhesive. (G) A boat anchor serves as a soap dish, and (H) a shower
curtain is added at the entry. The finished shower includes a bench in the dressing area.
This outdoor shower was designed by
Dale Lohrey and Steve Schaab for a
3-day “spiritual convention” on a farm
in Jacksboro, Tennessee. The gathering has been taking place annually since
1976. This book is by Beauvais Lyons,
who has been attending the event since
1986. Lohrey, Schaab and Lyons have all
served as “Commissioners” of the convention, which includes a shrine to Elvis
Presley, a “Queen,” a “Fashion Pope,” and
a softball tournament. This book may be
downloaded and printed, but should remain unaltered. Pictures of any outdoor
showers made based on this design can
be emailed to [email protected].
