Volume 26 Fall 2013 How to fight the flu this season The flu bug spreads fast and some people who catch it can get very sick. But don’t worry. Besides getting enough rest and eating right, you can do a lot to prevent catching the flu. Before we get to the tips, let’s look at common symptoms of the flu: you may have body aches, chills, high fever and headache. Some people feel tired or may get a cough or sore throat. On the other hand, a cold means you mostly have a runny or stuffy nose and you sneeze a lot. See Page 2... Keeping the flu away 1. Get a flu shot – Schedule a visit. Make sure you get a yearly flu shot. There is also a nasal spray vaccine made to fight the flu. Ask your Doctor which one is right for you. 2. Wash your hands with soap – The flu bug spreads easily through the hands. (So avoid touching your nose or eyes). 3. Stay active – Walk each day or move about any way you can. This cuts down on your stress, so your body can fight off colds and flu. Flu bug got you down? How to feel better: 1. Rest in bed – This helps your body fight off the bug. 2. Drink plenty of liquids – You can help clear up your nose and chest by drinking lots of water or hot tea. 3. What should you do if you don’t feel better? Depends on your age and health. In most cases it takes10 days. If symptoms (such as high fever or cough) still don’t go away, call your Doctor. This is what’s called medical identity theft. Instead of stealing your TV set, the thief goes after your name or health insurance number to get prescription drugs or file claims with your health provider. There’s a chance the thief’s health details could get mixed up with yours. If that happens, that could spell trouble for your ongoing treatments or payment records. confidential What can you do? When you need to see your Doctor, for any reason, you want to get in right away. We all do. In most cases, there’s a wait. That’s normal. Here’s a chart to better show how long you might wait based on the type of visit.
