SRC PRESIDENT
Message
Nyiko Rikhotso
SRC President
The Student Representative Council is honored to extend a
heartfelt welcome to all students of Tshwane South College
for Further Education and Training, not forgetting our brothers
and sisters from our sister countries.
Let me sieze this opportunity to promote the SRC which is the
legitimate mouthpiece of the entire student body.
Free education in our lifetime is truly becoming a reality as we
have introduced zero fee registration in all our campuses for
NCV & NATED students qualifying for NSFAS bursaries.
I urge all students to participate in extra mural activities
and please do not be ordinary. Students, question the
unquestioned as Martin Luther King Jnr said: “The function
of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think
critically”.
Editor’s Message
Our commitment as the Student Representative Council is to
bring a revolutionary change by uniting all structures that are
in existence in all our campus and promote learning. If you
face any problem feel free to confront the SRC office on your
campus.
I conclude by saying that you should make Tshwane South
College your own. We are moving towards our vision of making
Tshwane South College a world class further education and
training college. Long live TSC long live!!!!
Wa Nwina
NYIKO RIKHOTSO
SRC President.
Maud Pitikoe
Whew, its already Winter and only yesterday were we ushering in 2013, time really flies. Some of us have even forgotten our new year’s resolutions, let alone
sticking to them. We have adjusted so well to the year- 2013. One resolution
which the Marketing department was able to fulfil was that of reaching our target. Classes were full in no time in the beginning of the year after registrations.
This still indicates how important education is in our society. At Tshwane South
College as the vision and mission states’ “achieve the future””, we help students to
get just that. I have come to a realisation that material doesn’t make a person but
success, being humble and thanking the Almighty makes you who you are. This
achievement (that of the future) can only be obtained through determination,
obedience, sacrifice and hard work. I like the Sesotho idiom which says,”Leboela
ha le ngallwe”(it means you may succeed where you once failed) To those of you
who have once failed in your studies, know this the sky is the limit you can reach
your goals and dreams no matter what. To those students who recently graduated the road has not ended as yet. In fact it has started, stay focussed on your
studies it’s the only solid thing to fall back on.
We would like to thank ABSA for sponsoring us for this issue.

pays Tshwane South College a visit
It was exactly 09:00am when Odi Campus was abuzz with media people
from various TV stations ranging from etv, SABC and community
media. It was a big day at TSC as the states man was to pay homage to
Tshwane South College which is the first FET institution in SA to host
the President. Security was all over as sniffer dogs made their way
through to the venue sniffing all around in search of dangers that may
hamper or disturb the event. Before the proceedings could begin,
part of the council and the Principal of the college made their way
to the gate to welcome the honourable respected guests from their
expensive cars. Each and every guest was escorted by high security
which made sure that they arrived safely at their destination.
making. At the same time delegates were discussing pointers to be
discussed during the meeting with the president. After some time the
statesman left his holding room where he was seated to start off with
a meeting with the delegates consisting of the council members and
his entourage (Ministers, Mayor of Tshwane, Premier of Gauteng)
Long before the parade began “the men in black, this time from
security” came accompanied by the sniffer dogs to check for the last
time for any dangers. Security was very tight as chances cannot be
taken around the President. The first person to arrive was Minister
for Public Enterprises: Melusi Gigaba. He was accompanied by Ms
Mildred Oliphant - Minister of Labour and Dr Blade Nzimande –
Minister of Higher Education and Training. Then came the Mayor of
Tshwane – Kgosientsho Ramokgopa in his elegant blue suit and black
tie. He fitted his jacket preparing himself for the occasion. After him
was the Premier of Gauteng Ms Nomvula Mokonyane in her Pink Suit
with sparkling black patent shoes. It was moments before the states
man of the country stepped into the shores of Odi Campus.
From the classes the President and his entourage made their way to
the big tent in the middle of the campus to address the college staff
and students. As he entered into the tent Tshwane South College
choir performed songs of joy to welcome the President.
People were murmuring that the states man was already in town
and about to be dropped off by the motorcade at the entrance.
Immediately after that the motorcade believed to be that of the
President’s made its way through and dropped off the President .
as he stepped out of the Beamer the security was right around him
and chances of snapping that picture of the States man were slim.
Cameras went into a flashing mode I also had to fight my way through
to take a picture of this mysterious man. Even bodyguards could not
stop one from taking photos of this remarkable man.
Making his way through to the holding room for the day, which was
the Campus Managers office, he greeted the crowds with a smile
and waved his hand towards them. It was indeed history in the
After talks then there was a tour around the campus. Two class
rooms were visited, a simulation room and an engineering practical
workshop. Heading off to the workshops the President’s entourage
was given blue overalls to wear as a safety measure for entering the
workshop premises.
In his speech the President emphasised the importance of the National
Development Plan as well as how it will benefit the FET sector. He
further went on to say that the youth must take full advantage of the
opportunities presented to them by the government. “Government
wants students to be changed from agents of poverty to assets. You
must excel in what you do, you can do it as long as you persevere”, said
Zuma. He also shared his prison experience with the students and staff
at large of Tshwane South College. “Government would do anything
to improve the FET sector.” said the President.
After listening to the informative speech by the President Dr Nzimande
ascended the podium, further elaborated on the FET sector. “FET’s
must become institutions of choice not second best but of first choice.”
These FET colleges are for everyone not for a selected few only”, said
Dr Nzimande. He further applauded the staff of TSC for taking care
of the college thus far. He said that he sees Tshwane South College
as a model college from which other FET colleges will learn from. In
conclusion the President and his entourage and the TSC Council and
Principal networked over lunch. This is going to be remembered for
many years to come. This remarkable event will go down swiftly into
South Africa’s history books.

Mr Kraft’s
Farewell
Mr Kraft in Tears
The 28 March 2013 was a sad day as Tshwane South college
bid farewell to Mr Kraft after 35 years of service in the
Education sector. The main celebrant was in tears as he went
back in memory lane when he came to the shores of the then
Centurion College.
Programme Director for the Day was Mr VE Nkosi. Few of his
colleagues offered a touching speeches that epitomised the
man himself – Mr Kraft.
Mr De Lange met with Mr Kraft in 1990. At the event he praised
Johann as he was known as a profound author, examiner
and lecturer. He was involved in sport at the then Centurion
College now known as a satellite campus of Tshwane South
College.
Up next on the stage was the Council Chairperson- Mr M
Skosana who also offered his speech to Mr Kraft. He said - I
quote,” I can’t say much about Mr Kraft but in all the years I
have known Mr Kraft I have known him to be an organised
man, displaying qualities of a good leader and someone who
was good with time management.
The Principal was also given the stage to wish Mr Kraft well.
He also went on to say that Mr Kraft is someone whom you
can rely on. He is faithful, an author, team leader, a God
fearing somebody who is not ashamed to acknowledge God’s
presence in what he does. The Principal further elaborated on
the character of Mr Kraft, saying he is a humble man.
In conclusion the celebrant himself was given chance to speak.
As he stood up to say his goodbyes he cried and said I quote
“I thank my Heavenly Father, without His grace I wouldn’t be
here”. The restaurant became quiet and emotional. Above
all he thanked his seniors with whom he worked closely. He
assured people that TSC is the best college. Went on to give
his thanks to Dorothy his PA, who planned this event and who
was always professional when it came to Mr Kraft’s office. He
wished his incumbent all the best. He promised TSC that he
will also avail himself should the college need him. He would
also avail himself for the projects for DOD (Department of
Defence) and ETDP Seta. He emphasised that he loves finishing
things he started and hated leaving projects unfinished. He
closed his speech with a scripture reading: Acts 16 v 9, which
he wants the college to put into practice.

Catering N6 Cultural Lunch 12 February 2013
On the 12th of February 2013 the N6 Catering students prepared and hosted a South
African cultural lunch at Centurion campus. It was a festive occasion with 25 guests
attending. The students prepared typical traditional dishes of the following cultures:
Xhosa, Ndebele, SiSwati, Tsonga, Venda, Tswana, SePedi and Traditional South African.
The chicken feet, Mopani worms and slimy Morogo (“Guxe”) led to a lot of daring and
amazement.
Dressing up was the highlight for the students, seeing one another’s cultural clothes
and accessories.
Some of the food and beverage had to be prepared long in advance, soaking samp and
fermenting the Umqomboti (Traditional African beer). Students started very early at
the day with their preparations, slowly cooking the Mogodu (“Sheep’s Tripe”), samp and
beans to perfection for lunch time.
They also had to prepare the restaurant for a buffet style set-up to accommodate fast
and easy serving. A lot of cultural decorations were used to give the restaurant a splash
of colour that is so unique to the African culture.
The students have learned that although they speak different languages, most of their
cultures have the same ethics and moral values. As part of our unique Rainbow Nation,
we are all able to work together. They worked hard, but had a lot of fun! Well done N6

Cups
“A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university lecturer. Conversation soon
turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned
with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive and
exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the lecturer said: “If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were
taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is
the source of your problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the
better cups and are eyeing each other’s cups.”
“Now, if Life is coffee, then the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, but
the quality of Life doesn’t change.” “Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee in it.”
So folks, dont let the cups drive you...enjoy the coffee instead”

How to become an
Artisan: Electrician
A student at a
distribution board
•
What does the course entail what is its duration?
To learn all the skills required to become an artisan, the student must complete 5 modules. During a 12 week period, the student will come in contact with all the necessary training needed as prescribed by MERSETA and CHIETA.
Tshwane South College for Further Education and Training is currently accredited to offer the prescribed skills programme.
•
What is the requirements of the course?
The minimum requirement for students is a Grade 12 with the necessary technical subjects or a National N2
certificate with Mathematics, Science, Industrial Electronics and Electrical Trade Theory. To obtain a National
certificate a student must have the minimum pass rate of 40% per subject. Electrical Trade Theory is a compulsory requirement.
Prospective students must be at least 16years old and have satisfied the minimum school exit levels. Before practical modules are started, the student undergoes a medical examination to qualify for a certificate of physical fitness.
Further qualities beneficial to prospective students:
•
Be meticulously accurate
•
Enjoy working with their hands
•
Be practical
•
Able to concentrate under noisy working conditions
•
Be responsible
After completing the skills training in the workshops, a student must undergo in service training in industry for 3 years before
he/she can apply for their trade test at a registered trade test centre.
•
Are electricians introverts or extroverts ?
A student can be an introvert or an extrovert. Students will learn to work in groups as well as individually, depending what is required from them in the industry. Companies assist students to work physically with equipment to
implement skills learnt at the training centre.
•
What sort of qualifications can I obtain after completion of the course?
After completing the skills training in the workshops, the student has enough background to enter the industry.
In service training will furnish students with the industry requirements as prescribed by SETA. Students must gain confidence to work alone and be responsible to run a Department without any problems. A MERSETA logbook
provides for signatures to validate the progress of the student.
After completing the workshop training, students may come to the college to practice the tasks required for their
trade test. Students who haven’t completed all the courses must undergo RPL to determine at which level they are. After completing the trade-test, they become an artisan and then assume responsibilities in industry.
•
What are the career prospects of this field?
After a student has passed his/her trade-test, they become a qualified artisan in their field.
They can complete their N6 at Tshwane South College and receive a diploma which will enable them to become a foreman at a company. University studies are available for students who wish to pursue a technical engineering vocation. It depends on what the student’s needs are. An artisan can also open his/her own company and provide a service to industry. The field is vast and many opportunities are there, depending on the student’s goals.

Rendani Mamburu
This chap grew up in Madombizha township in Makhado. Rendani
matriculated at Litshovhu Secondary High School. At the age of 33yrs old
Rendani never thought he would be where he is today. Rendy, as he is known
was inspired by his brother’s colleague who at the time worked at OR Tambo
International in 1998 as a Fitter and Turner. He said that spirited him to follow
the career in fitting and turning. It is then that his brother in law advised him
to register himself with Pretoria West College. In 2001 he registered N1 for
Mechanical Engineering. He furthered his studies by completing N5 – N6.
After that he got a job at Mac Donald as a Crew trainer in December 2004
but he quit in 2005. From 2005 – 2007 he worked at Tshwane Training Centre
(PREMOS) under City of Tshwane. In October 2007 he qualified as a Fitter and
Turner at Olifantsfontein. From November 2007 to June 2008 he worked at
SA Mint. Subsequently he worked at City of Tshwane (PTA Power Station). In
November 2012 he was hired by Petra Diamonds (Cullinan Diamond Mine) as a
Fitter, where he now works. Rendy says that he is happy to be working at Petra
Diamonds, he is part of a team maintaining all the underground rock breaking
equipment. From time to time he is given the opportunity to act as foreman
and he is also the Safety Representative in the section and responsible for the
health and safety of employees in the crew. He mentioned that various skills
obtained in the power stations and current hydraulic experience helped him
to be a competent artisan.
When asked as to what lesson he took or rather learnt from the college he had
this to say I quote, “through Tshwane South College I learnt humility, respect,
education and I earned dignity through obtaining a qualification. He further
added on that SA MINT and Petra Diamonds recommend students who come
from Tshwane South College Pretoria West Campus. He also encouraged that
Tshwane South College qualifications are fully recognised. He believes that
he is an asset he gives the college 100% credit.

FLORENCE IS LIVING HER DREAM
Tuesday 26 March 2013 I decided to give Florence a ring. As bubbly as she
has always been, the young Ms Mokoena told me how happy she is thanks
to her hard work, it’s finally paying off. Florence discovered her passion
for Engineering when she started her schooling at Pretoria Technical High
where she studied mechanical technology from Grade 8 – 12. Having been
the first born child of three girls and hailing from Mamelodi nothing could
not stop her from fulfilling her dream - that of studying engineering. She
heard of Tshwane South College when her school mates were accepted at
the college to further their studies. She says that many students wanted
to see themselves being accepted at the college as the college had a good
reputation. A lot of TSC alumni who completed their studies at TSC are
now employed says Florence thanks to TSC which made it all possible.
She still recommends the institution as it offers education of a high
standard. 2009 saw Florence coming to the college to commence with her
Mechanical Engineering Studies. She started with N2 – N6, then she did
her N4 in Electrical Engineering and Fitting and Turning Level 1 – Level 2
at the practical workshop. Lastly she then did CNC Machining at workshop.
Last year Florence dropped off her CV at the SSS desk at Centurion Campus
where she studied. She was then contacted by Kone elevators which is
an Engineering company in Eden vale (Johannesburg) which deals with
elevators and escalators in the Johannesburg area. When asked about
how she got her big break she said that she t went to an interview where
she passed, and then the second where she also passed. Florence is one of
the two girls to be selected to be part of the students to be trained.
Florence’s dream is to qualify as a field Engineer. She also believes that she
is an inspiration to the youth. When asked about whether her leadership
skills acquired from college will work, she said that the student body (SRC)
gave her thick skin helping her to stand on her own. Therefore she is not
afraid of challenges.
Message to the youth
When asked about her message to the youth Florence had this to say,”
Study very hard to understand, not only to pass and then forget, because
you will need the information later. In conclusion Florence wants to put
this college on the map by making it a world renowned college.
Florence
Mokoena
She said right now she is busy with her 18 months practical training
experience. Florence currently works as a List Technician at Kone elevators.
Her job entails the following; installing elevators and its maintenance. She
said she has already installed two elevators thanks to Kone. When asked
about her job, this is what she had to say:” I love my job, in fact I am very
passionate about it, its challenging.” It’s also amazing that within a short
space of time she has managed to grasp a lot of information which she is
able to utilise in her daily duties.

gambling were sketched out in a form of play. Students were
glued to the show as they spotted a lot of dangers of gambling.
This was interesting, educational and informative at the same
time. A distinction was made on three different kinds of
gamblers namely; social gamblers – who gamble just to have
fun, pathological gamblers –who are obsessed with gambling
and last but not least problem gamblers – who always expect
something in return.
Tshwane South College Ploughs Back Into The Community”
It’s exactly 10:30am lunch time, Lebo and Nthabi (not their real names)
Grade 2 students are playing “diketo”, a famous Sesotho game. At the
same time the entourage of TSC (Council and SRC Executive 2012) entered
the Bronkhortspruit primary school playground. The girls are playing the
game on a worn out passage next to their classes. This is the spot where
they normally play on as the surface is marked. Making my way to the
soccer fields which they have created on their own, I see some boys are
dressed in faded clothes, others in uniform. “We walk to school everyday,
we have to be here early so that we can get our meals before classes begin,
said one of the students.” As I kept on walking I saw a worn out shoe of
a learner who was playing with his fellow class mate’s soccer. The young
boy could not stop talking of how he looked on at Sphiwe Tshabalala as
his role model. This really touched my heart as I realised the extra mile
that some children put in to further their education despite their family
backgrounds. The structures of both schools are in an unsatisfactorily
state: painting on walls peeling off, poor sanitation which makes these
leaners to be prone to bad health and holes in classroom floors.
This signified that both schools need help and Dr M Khumalo, the
Chairperson of the Marketing and Communications Committee (a subcommittee of the College Council) came to the rescue at the right time
to aid Kutumela Primary School by donating paint towards improving the
school’s infrastructure. Teachers were happy with the good deed that the
she did.
The College is formalising its relationship with these two Quantile 1 (nonfee paying) schools in the rural outskirts of Mamelodi. The relationship
is aimed at assisting through donations, staff capacity development and
any areas of need within the means of the College.
Should you wish to donate towards the school kindly contact the Tshwane
South College for FET Head office at 086 144 1111

TUKS Engineering Students at TSC Centurion for their Practicals
TUKS (Pretoria University) students were again on the
premises of TSC Centurion and Pretoria West campuses
to do their practicals. For Centurion Campus this is the
30yr in a row since the deal has been struck between
TUKS and the then Centurion College ( now known as
TSC Centurion Campus).
Engeening students from all engineering disciplines were
given the training which forms part of their studies.

Sniffer Dogs
At Odi Campus
South Africa is still amongst the countries with the highest rate of drug
trade. As the vision and mission of the college states, “achieve the future”,
Tshwane South College does just that. One such drive towards stabilising
the future of its assets (students) is controlling the scourge of drugs on
its campuses. This is done by having sniffer dogs coming routinely to
campuses to check if there is any drug activity on campuses by students.
This was done recently at all TSC campuses where the SAPS (South African
Police Service) came unexpectedly during college hours to check students’
school bags to see if drugs were brought on the premises of the college.
The SAPS came with their sniffer dogs to check on any drug smuggling
activity that may take place during college hours. This alarmed students
that they must stay clean at all times and focus on their studies.
Save a life, donate blood!
21 February 2013 was the blood donation day for TSC. This task was as always undertaken by
SANBS (South African National Blood Service). Annually the organisation contacts the SSS to
draw blood from students and staff who wish to donate their blood for a good cause. The blood
was drawn from 09:00am - 15:00pm. Both students and staff members were there to donate
blood. This came at a good time with the Easter season around the corner. Unfortunately this is
a time in which many accidents take place resulting in people losing a lot of blood.
Transformation
from Gauteng Department of Education (GDE)
to the Department of Higher Education (DHE)
Transform the present to achieve the future. This is the slogan of the College to advocate change in the work
place. Change and transformation is part of each person’s life. The FET sector staff is currently in the process of
migrating from Gauteng Department of Education to the Department of Higher Education. This is one aspect of
change that Colleges need to face.
Tshwane South College introduced change management to all Senior Managers at the end of 2011 and during
2012 to the Council. A decision was taken that information must be cascaded to all staff members. Professor
Makhene facilitated hour sessions on Wednesday afternoons during February 2013 at the different campuses
and Head Office. He imparted transformation and how it impacts on the College.

Stress the No. 1
Reason to Many Deaths
Page

Ms J Ramodike
(Psychologist)
“I have stress”, this is the most common statement ushered by the majority of people in public places. I often find myself wondering
if people really understand what stress is or how to deal with it. I was, thus urged to share this piece of information about the stress
with you. Firstly, let us try to define stress. The term stress refers to any stressor or circumstance that places physical and psychological
demands on an individual, leading to a physiological, psychological and behavioural outcomes (Beehr & Newman’s, 1078).
A stressor could be any change in a person’s life be it small or large, desirable or undesirable. Examples of stressors include the
following; getting married, loss a loved one, health related problems, academic difficulties, abuse, exams, moving to a new house,
discord with a family members or friends and economic problems. These are some of the problems although the list is long.
Stress does not always have bad effects but also positive ones in that, through it you stay focused, energetic, and alert. For example;
at school/tertiary it motivates you to do your utmost best, drives you to study hard for your exam instead of watching your favourite
soapie on TV or hanging out with friends.
This state of health becomes bad when it affects your mind, body and behaviour in a negative way and eventually leads to serious
health problems. This boils down to the fact that most diseases start small but through stress they end up creating complicated
health problems like Diabetes, Hypertension, suppressed immune system, heart failure, strokes or making one prone to anxiety and
depression (Williams and Cooper(2002).
You can protect your physical and psychological wellbeing by recognising the signs and symptoms of stress and taking steps to deal
with it.
Warning signs and symptoms of stress are the following: (Beehr & Newmans, 1978; Kaplan & Sadock, 2003)
•
Memory Problems
•
Inability to concentrate
•
Poor judgement
•
Hopelessness
•
Constant worry
•
Moodiness
•
Aggressiveness or irritability
•
Sense of loneliness and isolation
•
Eating more or less
•
Sleeping difficulties- Insomnia
•
Neglecting responsibilities
•
Consuming alcohol , cigarette or drugs to relax
•
Fatigue
There are also ways in which you can cope with stress and they are;
•
Eating the right diet
•
Being positive in whatever you do
•
Exercising
•
Learning to cope in stressful situations
•
Going for therapy etc.
Sometimes we become so saturated with stories or problems in our lives that it becomes difficult for us to identify the major stressors
that put us in difficult situations. If you are having problems and experiencing any of the above common stressors, feel free to come
and share with me in order to maintain and sustain your physical and psychological well being.

All is possible!
My fellow students, I appreciate
this platform and opportunity
that has been given to me.
Education is the power of
knowledge which can open
many opportunities for each
and every one of us. It’s not
always easy but it can be
done through hard work and
determination. When it gets too
dark, the sun is about to shine
for those who dedicated their
time to studying.
We are not here to compete
over clothes and hairstyles but
to build a future for ourselves,
you will realise that tomorrow is
what you make it to be.
Good luck to all of you as we
embark on this journey of
success.

Function 2012
Last year’s year end function was different from others. It
was a cost effective occasion but with the aim of bringing
people together. This time things were done differently, as
staff of TSC were catered for in the gardens of their offices.
Braai was the option this time. The menu was simple;
rolls,Greek salad, chops, lamb and juice or cold drinks.
