POSTMASTER: Send address changes to: American Salers Association 19590 East Mainstreet, Suite 104 Parker, CO 80138 Member JANUARY 2013 AMERICAN SALERS 5 ASAPRESIDENT Gregg Jasperson I recently talked to a young commercial cattleman who was curious about Salers. The things he was looking for in a breed of cattle reminded me of what I was looking for almost thirty years ago. I think there will always be cattlemen looking for the things that Salers cattle do well. Calving ease is almost always on the list of what cattlemen are looking for. Salers cows add to the profitability of a cow herd in many different ways. First of all, the superior fertility and longevity of Salers cows is not always apparent until you have had Salers females for a few years. Also, the mothering ability that Salers heifers have is a great labor saver. Another advantage that Salers cattle have, especially on a dry year, is their ability to cover rough range. I believe this can make the difference between having or not having enough forage to make it through the grazing season. If a producer can add profit and more importantly years to the life of his cows by using Salers, the benefits will be impressive, particularly when cows are in short supply. Prices have been good and look to remain strong this year, the December Salers sales were very successful. However, most of the country experienced some level of drought last year. In our area we had one of the driest and most windy summers I can remember. Fortunately fall brought a little rain. Hopefully weather will be better across the country this coming year. The weather is only one of the many things that make this a tough business. As we look to the future of the cow-calf producer, with high feed cost, greater demand on pasture for cropland, and the uncertainty of public land grazing, cattle numbers may remain low. Therefore if American cattlemen are going to be able to produce enough beef to feed our nation’s growing population, we need to make sure the cattle we do have are as productive as possible. In this way, Salers females are the most valuable asset we have. For the next few years I think cow numbers and how to rebuild the nation’s cow herd will be a major topic in our industry. While the focus is on cows we should focus our advertizing on promoting the superior traits of the Salers female. This should create renewed interest in our breed. The choice we made 30 years ago to use Salers turned out to be the right choice for us. They fit our operation perfectly. I’ve had the opportunity to work with a lot of good people and made some friends along the way. I would like to thank the Salers staff, the board of directors, and all the breeders for their hard work and dedication. I look forward to working with all of you in the coming year. RESEARCHUPDATE Forget Technology - But What Would Result? We’re often told we should turn back the clock and produce cattle for beef the way we used to. What would be the impact if we did away with steroid growth implants, ionophores in feed, hormones in feed, and beta agonists ? This question was investigated in a recent study. The effects? In the U. S., to produce the same amount of beef we’d need: • 11.8% more cattle in the U.S. beef herd, • 10.4% more fed cattle slaughtered, • 10.6% more tons of feed, • 10.0% more acres of land for grazing and growing feed, 6 • 4.2% more gallons of water for producing more feed and maintaining more cattle. And, in the process, 9.8% more metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent would be produced. (J. Animal Sci. 90:3527; Washington St. Univ., Iowa St. Univ.) Does Forage Availability Affect Heterosis from Crossbred Cows? Hereford, Angus, and Hereford-Angus crossbred cows were compared under extensive range conditions. Cows were stocked to allow about 2 ½ lb or 4 lb forage per lb of cow weight. Production rate was determined as pounds calf weaned per female exposed to breeding. Crossbred cows at the higher forage availability produced at a rate 20% higher than crossbred cows at lower forage availability or purebred cows at higher forage availability (which did not differ) and 37% higher than purebred cows at lower forage availability. Heterosis will not compensate for poor nutrition. (J. Animal Sci. 90 E-Suppl. 2:331; Udelar School of Agronomy, Depart. of Anim. and Grass Production, Uruguay) Research update provided by Beef Cattle Browsing newsletter published by Texas AgriLife Extension, Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University. The American Salers Association “Optimizer” Registry is a specific extension of the ASA Composite Registry Program. Optimizers offer commercial cattlemen a means to manage percent blood in their cowherds through the use of documented, seedstock quality composites complete with EPDs. Cattle from ¼ to less than ¾ Salers ancestry fit the program, and all have performance data. Optimizer Criteria •Cattle from 12.5% to less than 75% Salers ancestry fit the program. •Both parents must be registered in their respective breed association. •All registered Optimizer animals must have reported performance data. •A purebred Optimizer will consist of 5/8 Salers. How Does It Work? Producers enroll cattle with the current ASA registration application. Those producers registering Optimizer cattle will simply check the Optimizer column on the registration application. Producers provide ASA with ancestral information including registration numbers of any non-Salers parent animals recorded in another breed’s registry. The Optimizer pedigree contains complete multi-breed information including calculated multi-breed EPDs. Research shows the Salers-Cross Female is the Most Efficient and Productive Cow in the Industry Mothering Ability When it comes to mothering ability, the Salers cross female is unmatched. As any rancher with Salers cross will tell you, the females go from a teenager to a mother overnight. It’s normal to see new calves up nursing in ten minutes, regardless of the weather. Hot to bitter cold - the calves are hardy and ready to get up when they hit the ground. A live calf is where your profit starts. Optimize the Maternal Traits The key to breeding Optimizer composites is starting from complimentary maternal breeds. This creates a composite that takes advantage of heterosis, and also produces a predictable, efficient, productive, cross-bred replacement female. Regardless of the cross – Angus, Hereford-Baldy, Red Angus or others – Salers will complement their maternal ability and improve milk, calving ease and fertility. As an example, with Angus, in addition to traits the breeds have in common, they complement each other with the Angus providing extra fleshing ability and the Salers adding udder quality and increased growth for heavier weaning weights. Just one reason the Salers-Angus cross female is one of the most efficient and productive commercial cows in the industry. Best of Both Worlds Utilize the superior genetics in the purebred line and combine them to make crossbreds. Then use hybrid or purebred genetics and plan crossbreeding systems to perpetuate the hybrid vigor and still take advantage of the additive effect of the superior genetics with documented EPDs. Managing Heterosis Managing heterosis will lead to increased profits. Multi-breed rotational crosses take management to maintain maximum heterosis. Optimizer composites easily fit into most crossbreeding situations. On an unrelated cow, they 16 JANUARY 2013 transmit 100% direct heterosis. On a straight bred Angus or Salers cow, they will transmit 50% of the heterosis of a pure outcross. A continual system of using Optimizer composites and mating them back to Optimizer composite daughters results in retaining 50% of direct heterosis and 50% of maternal heterosis. For weaning weight, there is a greater total impact from heterosis than would be expected in crossing two pure breeds (100% direct heterosis, 0% maternal heterosis) because maternal heterosis has a greater impact on weaning weight than does direct heterosis. No amount of crossbreeding is going to make up for poor genetics in a cow herd. Select the best pos- sible genetics you can and watch the improvement when you breed Optimizer composites balanced for maternal traits, performance and outstanding carcasses. The best way to maximize your productivity is to utilize both improved genetics and hybrid vigor in your commercial ranching environment. The Salers Optimizer does all of that and more. First Breeding Sire: PB Salers Dam: PB Other Offspring: 50% Salers – 50% Other Second Breeding: Then mate the above offspring as follows: Sire: 50% Salers – 50% Other Dam: PB Salers Offspring: 75% Salers – 25% Other Third Breeding: Mate this final offspring to a halfblood individual bred the same way as the first breeding. Sire: 75% Salers – 25% Other Dam: 50% Salers – 50% Other Offspring: 5/8 Salers – 3/8 Other This individual is 5/8 Salers and 3/8 of only one other breed.
