UNITED CHURCH OF MOSCOW
OCTOBER 2009 NEWSLETTER
OUR NEW PASTOR
Our new Pastor, Jodie Tooley, will be preaching her first official sermon to our congregation on
Sunday, October 18th. We are also being honored with a visit from the Evergreen Region of the
American Baptist Churches area minister, Dr. Marcia Patton, on that day. Please come to the morning
worship on the 18th to welcome Pastor Tooley to our midst and renew acquaintances with Dr. Patton.
NOTES FROM ABW FALL RALLY.....
On September25-26th, I attended the ABW Fall Rally at Calvary Baptist Church in Spokane.
Miriam Noyes, one of our missionaries in the Congo, shared with us about her ministries there. The
women of the Congolese Baptist Church asked her to teach literacy classes to them; 3/4 of the city
churches now have literacy classes. That is 75 churches. Five thousand have gone through literacy
classes and graduated. Traveling by car is expensive; it cost $15.00 to go 5 miles. An offering was
taken for Miriam Noyes expenses and support which totaled $432.00.
Calvary Baptist Church is starting a Soup Kitchen beginning October 3rd so items and donations
were brought for that project.
I have received the White Cross assignment and will post the National Ministries portion if
anyone would like to make a cash contribution. When we roll bandages for White Cross, most of them
go to the Congo. Later, we will have an opportunity to participate in this project.
Next year's theme is "In The Potter's Hands." We will continue to raise funds for Human
Trafficking. For the last two years, our goal, nationally, was $250,000 the amount totaled $402,000.
The countries chosen for Mission Study this year are: Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama. We have an
opportunity to hear Vital and Ketly Pierre on November 1st from Bluefield’s, Nicaragua.
There are many missional challenges.
Charlene Vail Hettinger
The first Friday of the month, at 7 pm, will be Movie Night.
The next one will be Friday, October 2nd and it will be “Fireproof”
Starring: Kirk Cameron, Erin Bethea, Ken Bevel, Harris Malcolm, and Jason McLeod.
Directed by Alex Kendrick. “Fireproof” is about a heroic fireman (Kirk Cameron) in a failing marriage
who takes his father's challenge to be part of a 40-day experiment designed to teach both husband and
wife the real meaning of commitment. Fireproof begins with a married couple in deep trouble. On the
verge of divorce, they are fighting and barely able to speak to one another in a kind manner. This
movie is one of the best at showing what God intends for marriage. Singles and married couples alike
will witness the reconciliation of two broken people and how God can heal even the most damaged of
relationships. The movie has some very moving and action packed scenes of the firemen doing their
daily work in a heroic manner.
