The growing popularity of Outer Harbour as a
cruise ship destination is good news for South
Australia, and it should also be good news for
Port Adelaide – but is it?
The success of our annual cruise ship season,
which last year attracted a record 27 arrivals
and up to 50,000 passengers, brought an
estimated $3 million in economic
benefits to South Australia through
accommodation for interstate
passengers, tours, crew spending,
port fees, security, fuel, food and
beverage supplies and other services.
But how much of that stayed in the
City of Port Adelaide Enfield? For the most
part, the bus tours for the passengers
passed straight through our city en route
to the Barossa, Kangaroo Island and other
wonderful destinations.
This year an expected 15 cruise ships will visit
us, some making multiple visits. Among them
will be the Queen Mary 2 which alone brings
in 4000 passengers and crew.

2012 - National Year of Reading
It seems incredible but nearly half of Australia’s
population struggles without adequate literacy skills to
meet the most basic demands of everyday life and work,
such as reading a newspaper, following a recipe, making
sense of timetables, or understanding the instructions on
a medicine bottle.
Australian libraries and library associations are behind
a campaign to turn 2012 into the National Year of
Reading, linking together all the great things that are
already happening around books.
The National Year of Reading 2012 is about helping
people discover and rediscover the magic of books.
Most of all, it’s about Australians becoming a nation
of readers.
This year will see many amazing - and fun - reading
activities taking place around Australia and online, so
people of all ages, from different backgrounds, can
discover and rediscover the joy of reading.
Township of Glebe
(between Port Adelaide and Alberton)
Sidney Malin will sell by auction, under instructions
from the Trustees of St. Paul’s Church, 63 BEAUTIFUL
Allotments, being Subdivision of Portion of Section
2300A, Hundred of Port Adelaide, and laid out as the
Township of Glebe. This land is known as Green’s
Paddock and adjoins the Rectory. Close to Baptist and
Methodist churches and Port Adelaide Public School. It
is only about three or four minutes’ walk from Alberton
Station and easy distance of Port Adelaide. It comprises
some of the best land in the district, and the allotments
measure from 50 ft. to 66 ft. frontage to good, wide
roads by depths from 135 ft. to 220 ft. The terms are
exceedingly easy. Only £5 deposit per allotment and
balance in quarterly instalments, extending over 1, 2,
or 3 years. Interest, 5 per cent. Right to pay off at any
time. Those purchasers paying cash will be able to
possess their title almost immediately. Note — this is
an opportunity for speculators and builders to secure
sites for building purposes. The situation is very good for
letting purposes.
March 9 1912 The Register
Watch Your Harness
‘Every horse owner well knows a harness is an expensive
item, but, as Mr. Roeger, of Northfield, pertinently
emphasised in the course of a recent chat, this expense
may be greatly curtailed by taking care of the harness
from the moment it is purchased. In the first place, it is
advisable to buy only the very best, as it will prove the
cheapest in the long run. Dressings of neatsfoot oil and
a good harness composition three or four times a year
will, in Mr. Roeger’s opinion, keep the harness clean and
pliable. Appreciable saving may be effected by paying
proper attention, at the right time, to repairs. There
are many repairs to which a handy man should attend
himself, by keeping a saddler’s outfit, such, as a ball
of hemp, a few awls and needles, a piece of cobbler’s
wax and a good assortment of copper rivets...Nothing
but leather lined collars should be used, as the leather
can easily be kept clean, whereas with the check lining,
the dirt, salt, and hair are held, and upon the horse
sweating, these cause the lining to become hard and
lumpy; and if it is not cleaned after use each time it will
finally raise sores on the shoulder.

The visit of three major cruise ships all
on the same weekend in early February –
the Athena, Celebrity Century and Crystal
Serenity - bringing with them more than
5000 passengers and crew, was a first for
Outer Harbour.
It was also reminder that Port Adelaide is
also a wonderful tourist destination and we
must make it as welcoming and attractive a
place as possible. It’s time those cruise ship
passenger buses made a detour to discover
the attractions of our historic port and that we
benefitted from at least a small share of their
tourist dollars.
Meanwhile, our efforts continue to bring
more sporting opportunities to groups of
young people who have been missing out,
in particular young refugees and Aboriginal
children in the Kilburn area.
That’s why I’m strongly behind recent moves
to seek special Commonwealth grants to
improve sporting facilities for these groups at
Kilburn Reserve. Let’s hope they succeed.
Thanks to a partnership between Council’s library
service and OPAL, the collections at Enfield and
Greenacres libraries have received an extra boost with
equipment to aid development of gross motor skills such
as skipping ropes, quoits, Frisbees and ball games.

March/April 2008 • City of Port Adelaide Enfield
your community
A night of harmony...
and dinner
Kilburn Community Centre will host its traditional
Harmony Week event, Growing Together In
Harmony, on Friday 23 March at Kilburn Community
Centre, 59 Gladstone Avenue Kilburn.
This year the event – which is free - will take place
from 6-9pm and will showcase performers from a
variety of cultural backgrounds. A highlight of the
evening is the healthy, delicious multicultural dinner
sponsored by the OPAL program.
Keeping dogs safely
under control
No-one likes dogs that are scary or out of control,
especially if there are children around, so having
your dog properly trained is the most responsible
way to go.
One popular local opportunity is provided by the
Gepps Cross Dog Training Centre, which has trained
thousands of owners and dogs of all shapes, sizes
and ages to have better relationships with each other
and the community.
Last year the centre moved from Enfield High,
where it had been located for many years, to new a
new location at Somerset Reserve, Sarnia Avenue,
Clearview. The club, which has been operating in the
Port Adelaide Enfield Council District for more than
30 years, has about 150 members who train their
dogs to be sociable and well behaved pets
Training is for dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds and
takes place on Sunday mornings between 9.30am
and 11.30am from the first Sunday in February to the
end of November. A free introductory session
for new members takes place at 10.15am, while
annual membership is $40 (junior and pensioner
discounts available).
“The best example of the value of training was with
my own dog, Chrissy,” said volunteer instructor
Annette Railz. “She was spooked by a mozzie zapper
and bolted towards a busy main road. I yelled “No
Chrissy, and she stopped dead in her tracks. Without
the training, I could have lost my dog.”
Cloth nappies make
a comeback
Port Adelaide Enfield Council is the first council
in South Australia to offer local residents the
opportunity to sample a range of cloth nappies.
The council is partnering with KESAB environmental
solutions to educate residents on the impacts of
disposable nappies on the environment. From the last
council bin audit that took place, it was estimated
that 140 tonnes of disposable nappies are currently
going to landfill each year.
In Australia it is estimated that 2.1 billion disposable
nappies are buried in landfill each year.
An incentive program that allows Port
Adelaide Enfield Council residents to try cloth
nappies before they buy them has already been
received very positively.
Council is offering a subsidised program to
encourage parents to use cloth nappies through
a cloth nappy library, which enables them to
try out different sizes and brands of modern cloth
nappies for two weeks and find the best system
for their family.
Late last year KESAB and the cloth nappy company
Eco Bums delivered two educational sessions and
demonstrations, which resulted in 11 families
taking up the offer to trial cloth nappies. There is a
information evening on:
•
Thursday 15 March at the
Enfield Community Centre, 6.30pm.
“This is a great incentive for parents to try cloth
nappies to see if it suits them and their baby. The
environmental and financial benefits are quite
significant” says Grace Barila Project Coordinator
from KESAB environmental solutions.
Annette says the classes are not just about formal
training.“I like the social atmosphere and the fun
that comes with not only training your own dog, but
assisting others to train theirs. Most dogs get very
excited when they know they are going to training
and they love it.”
“Cloth nappies have come a long way since terry
towelling squares. Modern versions are much more
absorbent, less bulky, easier to wash and are just as
easy to use as disposables – and they look great.”
For more information, please visit
geppscrossdogtraining.org.au or call Jan
on 8261 7220.
For more information or to register attendance
at the sessions please contact Grace Barila on

Making affordable, healthy
meals as easy as pie...
One of the issues some people face when trying to
move away from pre-prepared or junk food meals is
that putting a simple, low cost, tasty and nutritious
meal on the table can be a bit of a challenge.
Cooking great meals from fresh ingredients raises
a few questions, such as what will I prepare, do I
have all of the ingredients I need, and how do I find
the time?
Community Food SA has set out to provide the
answers that will make life in the kitchen as easy
as possible even for inexperienced home cooks, by
providing Easy Feast meal packs.
These are easy-to-prepare complete meal packs each
containing a recipe and all the ingredients you need
(except oil and margarine) to feed a family of 4-6
people for less than $8. That’s a great meal costing
less than $2 per head.
Importantly, there’s plenty of choice with 13 options
including cottage pie, tuna mornay, vegetable pizza,
corn and tomato salad, vegetable risotto, chicken
fried rice, chilli con carne and minestrone soup.
All the recipes are guaranteed to be nutritious as they
have been developed by Community Foodies under
the guidance of community dietitians.
They are available only from Community Food SA,
a community grocery store that has been serving the
inner northern suburbs of Adelaide for more than
|20 years, providing a variety of supermarket
products for people who need their shopping
budget to stretch further.
They’ve moved recently from Kilburn to a new, larger
location at Shop 5, 580 Main North Road, Gepps
Cross, which is open from 9am to 3.30pm, Tuesday
to Friday. They can be contacted on 8262 7345 or by
email at [email protected].
South Road Superway
The $842 million South Road Superway project is the
biggest single investment in a South Australian road
project and the state’s most complex engineering
road construction project to date. Funded by both
the Australian and South Australian governments, the
4.8km expressway features a 2.8km elevated roadway
with multiple lane, twin carriageways from the Port
River Expressway to Regency Road.
Stage One, which included early service relocations
and wider transport network enhancements, is
now complete. Seven piers are in various stages
of construction, most of the piling and four piers
are now complete, and above them some of the
segments that form the Superway carriageway have
been lifted into place using a 500 tonne crane.
The Superway is being constructed whilst
maintaining two lanes of traffic in each direction
during peak hour. South of Grand Junction Road a
worksite has been created in the middle of the road
and north of Grand Junction Road the construction
team is working in the eastern swale.
Casting the 2202 segments that form the elevated
roadway as close as possible to the piers minimises
the interruption to traffic on South Road and the
surrounding traffic network.
More than 150 of these segments (each weighing
65-90 tonnes) have already been cast, with a
workforce of up to 180 people working 24 hour shifts
in the casting yard.
A successful Indigenous employment program
has been implemented, and in November the
construction team achieved a significant safety
milestone, reaching one million construction hours
without a lost time injury.
For further information on the project please visit our
website by typing ‘South Road Superway’ into your
search engine, or calling 1300 638 789 or emailing
[email protected].
Golf course upgrade
now complete
Work on the Regency Park Golf Course and wetland
as part of the $842 million South Road Superway
project is now finished and the course is open to
play, featuring safety improvements and a challenging
and spectacular wetland feature.
More than 40,000 plants have been planted around
the wetland, which manages stormwater as a
detention basin.
For all booking please contact the Pro Shop
on 8268 5753.
Planning for reserve upgrade
now under way
Development of a masterplan for a major upgrading
of Thomas Turner Reserve is now under way,
including an extensive consultation program to
determine what nearby residents and users of the
reserve want to see included.
Located on the corner of Nelson and Grand Junction
Roads, Valley View, and bound to the east and north
by residential properties, the reserve consists of three
playing fields that are used for soccer and cricket,
two small buildings that provide basic change room
facilities, a driving range and a par three golf course.
It is an important regional recreation reserve that also
has a regional play space and community facilities.
It is proposed the master plan focuses strongly on the
retention and enhancement of the existing qualities
and functions of the Thomas Turner Reserve in its
entirety. This includes finding ways to enhance the
water courses and wetland areas; more passive
recreation areas that include play spaces, shelters,
barbeques, drinking fountains and shade; and better
connections for cycling and pedestrians. A medium
skill level skate facility with access from Nelson Road
and suitable car park space to accommodate existing
clubs will also be considered. The driving range will
be retained and no additional sports lighting
is proposed.
Current proposals under the new masterplan include
rationalisation of buildings by the demolition of the
two existing buildings and their replacement with a
new club facility that will accommodate all existing
sport users of the reserve.
The community consultation process will include
interviews with regular users of the reserve and the
existing buildings to discuss the development of the
reserve as well as any proposed rationalisation and
upgrades to buildings; two open meetings to be held
on the reserve to gather local residents’ views and
to provide feedback on the final master plan; and a
letterbox drop to residents living within a 1km radius
providing information on the final master plan.
When the community consultations have concluded
and the master plan concept design finalised, it will
go back to Council for endorsement.

Tour Down Under inspires
Semaphore bike group
The recent Tour Down Under event has given a
major push along to the bike riders who are part of
the Semaphore Wheels in Motion group.
During the Tour Down Under in January, bike group
members had the opportunity to see the race from
different vantage points including the CBD, Lobethal,
Woodside, Aldgate, Tanunda and Norwood.
This provided great enjoyment and inspiration
for members who are now keen to get involved in
one of the public Tour Down Under rides, possibly
next year.
Since July last year the group has been supported by
the Semaphore Uniting Church in collaboration with
the Western Region Supported Residential Facilities
(SRF) Project.
It meets every Tuesday morning at the church shed,
146 Semaphore Road, Exeter, and participants go
for a bike ride - with the Semaphore foreshore a

Awards for our top citizens
and events
Major endeavour by two
benchtop sailors
Each year the City of Port Adelaide Enfield presents
Australia Day awards to individuals and organisations
who have made a noteworthy contribution during the
current year or given outstanding service to the local
community over a number of years.
Half a century ago Paul Korte was well-known as a
boatbuilder in Port Adelaide. Not surprisingly, his
hobby was building sailing boats.
Now nearing 90 and living in Port Pirie, Paul is still
building boats as a hobby – but this time both smaller
and more elaborate, such as his 70cm long model of
the sailing ship HMB Endeavour.
“Presenting these awards is one of the most satisfying
tasks a mayor can have,” said Port Adelaide Enfield
Mayor Gary Johanson, who presented the awards at
Sunnybrae Farm. “I know the pleasure they will bring
to the winners and their families – and I know the
benefits their tireless work has provided to
the community.”
Started more than nine months ago, Paul managed
to finish it in time for the Endeavour’s visit to Port
Adelaide in February but he’s unable to make the
trip to visit the ship in person.
Instead his place will be taken by his sprightly old mate
Fred Schembri, who’s nearing 80 and who played a
helpful role in the making of the model Endeavour.
Klemzig resident Fred helped out by sourcing the
right timber for the model, including huon pine, and
because he owned a wood lathe he was able to make
the masts and other spindly bits and pieces.
“It’s a magnificent piece of work,” Fred enthuses, happy
that Paul has promised to leave it to him when he sails
off into the blue yonder.
Now both benchtop sailors are looking forward to
Paul’s next project, a model of the 44m Baltic trader
Soren Larsen, which led the First Fleet re-enactment
back in 1988.
Helping young Afghan refugees
find their feet
Young Afghan refugees in Adelaide are banding
together for support in response to difficulties
settling into their new home.
An increasing number of unaccompanied minors from
Afghanistan have come to Adelaide in recent years,
with many struggling to find their feet while they learn
English and the culture of their new home.
Some of those young people have now formed the
Afghan Youth Project to help new migrants become
part of the community and give them leadership skills
through a range of community development projects.
Many young Afghanis have arrived without families,
often as unaccompanied minors who’ve come through
the detention centre process, and they end up in
Adelaide without the strong family links found in most
refugee communities.
The project, which is being run by Uniting Care Wesley
Port Adelaide in partnership with the government’s
Office for Youth, is aimed at Afghanis aged from
12 to 24 years. It plans to help them improve their
engagement with the community, improve their self
confidence as well as their physical and emotional
well-being.
There are also up to 12 places available for people to
participate as a member of the Afghan Youth Project’s
Youth Advisory Committee, whose members will
engage in youth leadership training, meetings and
activities led by and for young people.
To take part in or find out more about the Afghan Youth
Project, please contact Christine Gamble or Mariam
Aslami, Afghan Youth Project Officer, on 8404 1592 or
0410 029 064, or by email [email protected].
The Citizen of the Year Award went to Steven Burgess,
who has fostered many children over the years. The
judges, who described Steve as a “truly charitable man
- a humanitarian”, said he made financial donations
beyond his means to charitable causes and had
supported the Enfield Food Centres SA for many years.
“He has taken many children to see stage shows,
concerts, movies and many community events, always
paying for their entry,” the judges added. “He is in
every respect, a model citizen.”
Port Adelaide Enfield’s Young Citizen of the Year is
Brooke Clark, who has launched a tireless campaign
to promote awareness and understanding of Autism
Spectrum Disorder.
“With no official ambassador, Brooke took it upon
herself to raise awareness through the Army of Autism
Awareness Angels, who volunteer their time to charities
through fundraising at various charity events,” the
judges commented.
Illuminart Productions won the award for Community
Event of the Year, in which artist Cindi Drennan
brought ‘Port Inhabited’ to the 2011 Port Festival over
two spectacular evenings.
“Cindi spent many hours with community groups in the
Council area, gathering information, ideas and images
to obtain a better knowledge of how the City of Port
Adelaide Enfield should be projected and portrayed,”
the judges said. “The result was a visually beautiful
community event attended by thousands.”
In addition, 15 individuals, businesses and
organisations won Service to the Community Awards,
including Westside Blue Light, the Rotary Club of Largs
Bay and Hey Jude hair and Beauty.
Prior to the Australia Day Awards presentation, a
Citizenship Ceremony took place with more than
40 people from various countries pledging their
commitment to become Australian citizens.
