Why Should Swine and Dairy Product Retailers Consider Stocking Biological Maintenance Products for Sludge and Air Quality Management related to the Dairy Industry Economic Potential Regulatory Pressures Cost of Conventional Removal Methods 1 State and Federal Regulatory Pressures • Air Emissions from Barns and Lagoons has been measured on test sites around the country to determine what amounts of Ammonia and Hydrogen Sulfide. This action is coming from EPA’s Air Emission program and the Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA) opening the door for emission limitations and future regulations etc. 2 ASI Digest Plus Benefits • Reduces Odor • Requires Less Agitation in Lagoon or Pit • Reduces emissions such as Hydrogen Sulfide and Ammonia • Reduces Floor Crusting and Slime • Easy to Use ASI Digest Plus Treatment ½ lb./18 cows • Twice per month – • Apply to the stall alley, behind animals, lift stations and flush gutters Get Ahead with ASI Digest Plus Cost vs. Return Example 100 cow dairy liquid manure system Urea contains 50 % nitrogen today's urea pricing @ $600 per ton with the cost per lb of N= $.65/ lb. A 100 cow dairy will produce 1000000 gal of liquid manure / yr. containing approx 28000 lbs of nitrogen with a total nitrogen value of over $18000 Waste Analysis show total nitrogen (N) in dairy lagoon effluent is composed of approximately two-thirds ammonium nitrogen and one-third organic nitrogen. The ammonium nitrogen is equivalent to nitrogen fertilizer and, except for losses to the air, is available to plants in the year of application Reducing the loss of ammonium nitrogen into the air on a 100 cow dairy using ASI Digest Plus could save $3000 - 40000 of nitrogen at today’s prices Rate is 1/2 lb per 18 cows every two weeks 100 cow dairy per yr. will produces 1000000 gal of liquid manure approximate cost to treat $800 yr. or around $7 – $9 per/cow/per/year Activation Activating a Pit/Lagoon Initial Treatment or Inoculation • Rates calculated per 7000 gallons • light to no crusting 1 pound • Partial Crusting 1.5 pounds • Heavy Crusting 2.5 pounds • Freshly Pumped 1.5 pounds • For Better Results agitate or thoroughly mix , or spray (use larger nozzles) product into lagoon or pit system. • 25 pounds of product treats 300000 gallons once system has been initially shocked. 7 ASI Biological Programs Have Proven Effective in Reducing Sludge in Active Sites… Albertson, NC – Diffusion & Bioaugmentation Test (12/01 – 8/03) Sludge Present (ft3) 280,000 Sludge 266,100 260,000 240,000 227,917 A 14% decrease 220,000 194,818 200,000 A 27% decrease 180,000 160,000 138,969 A 48% decrease 140,000 120,000 100,000 Dec-01 Jul-02 Oct-02 Aug-03 8 …And Have Demonstrated Improved Performance at Identical Locations Albertson, NC – Diffusion & Bioaugmentation Test (2004 – 2005) Untreated Lagoon Treated Lagoon 33% 29% 3.1 2004 2005 3 2.3 2.2 2.9 3.08 2.8 2.7 2.4 2.1 2.31 2 2.79 2.6 1.9 1.98 1.8 Sludge Depth (feet) Sludge Depth (feet) 9 ASI BioBlocks PRODUCT INFORMATION A blend of multiple bacterial spores selected to biologically digest and treat organic wastes in an easy to use time release cylinder ADVANTAGES ASI’s scientifically researched time release formulation digests organic wastes naturally and effectively. Our unique bacterial cultures are selected for optimum enzyme production, assuring the efficient breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. This proprietary blend of microbes will reduce odors, BOD, COD, suspended solids, turbidity, and ammonia concentrations in Lagoons and Pits. ASI’s unique, non-engineered cultures rapidly digest odor causing organic wastes. Multilevel quality assurance processes extend far Bacteria are stabilized and shipped in spore form, beyond our doors. Purity and microbial concentration ensuring long-term stability and extended shelf life is guaranteed for consistent and superior biological products. ASI BioBlocks allow for site specific treatment with new easy to apply technology. The test was performed in two identical barns. One barn was treated with ASI’s scientifically selected bacterial cultures and the other barn was left untreated for comparison. Dosing The test site was treated weekly with 10 pounds of a 10 billion CFU/g ready to use product made from ASI’s highly concentrated powder Swine Waste Digester. Testing Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide levels were tested after six weeks of application with a Sensidyne tube collector. The tube collector was suspended 1.5 feet below the floor for 1.5 hours. Results As shown in Figure 1, the ammonia and hydrogen sulfide levels were reduced by 90% in the barn treated for 6 weeks with ASI’s bacteria. Each barn contained 1,000 hogs with a waste pit under the barn (no lagoons). Each pit measured 40’ x 200’ x 10’. The test commenced immediately following the annual pumping of the waste pits. 14 What Makes ASI Lagoon Mgt Program Unique? Diverse Community ASI Start-up and maintenance is made up of a diverse community of organisms (bacteria blends enzyme stimulants) Metabolic Function Studies have demonstrated the ability to metabolize a wide variety of carbon sources (feed on organic compounds) Established Technology Agriment Services has over 400 active programs in NC, MT, OK, KS, OH, VA,and CA. Demonstrated Performance Agriment has demonstrated consistent results on active systems and also offers a performance guarantee Program Oriented Approach ASI Programs are based on a service and testing approach to solve site-specific problems. We are not just selling products like most competitors 15 The Swine/Dairy Industry Is Facing Three Distinct Environmental Problems Sludge • Many lagoons are reaching critical solid build-ups • Method of disposal is still to be determined • Cost of disposal “dredging” is expensive Effluent Disposal • Nutrient management regulations are maturing • Available land becoming scarce (phosphorus issues are playing a role) • Liabilities remain with producer for Ag Emissions • Measurement is highly subjective • There are not proper tools to quantify • Regulations are very young but developing What have you heard about current / proposed legislation? 16 A More Producer Friendly Solution Services (Nutrient Management) Mechanical Aeration: • Diffusers to stabilize lagoons • Effective, low-cost to install and operate • Record collection • Waste sampling • Soil testing • Sludge volume assessments • Nutrient management plans Biological Product Suite: Systems (Mechanical / Aeration) Products (Consumables) 17 • ASI Bioreactor Product Technology • ASI Release for Phosphorus Build-UP in land application sites.
