WINTER 2010 Diana Cronin Rides To Recovery B y v i v i a nn k u e h l T S N W M e mb e r Diana Cronin rode her bike 17 miles in a breathtaking 5225 feet elevation gain, up the steep mountainside to the top of Hurricane Ridge near Port Angeles, on the first anniversary of her diagnosis. It was a demanding trip, but just a step on her journey. Why Run? B y T a nn a y a r n e l l T S N W m e mb e r Team Survivor Northwest—women fighting and surviving cancer! Certainly not a group anyone aspires to become a member of! Shortly after my diagnosis and determined to win, I made a bold statement to my husband. I told him, “I am going to run a marathon.” When he asked me why on earth I would want to do that, I replied, “Because it seems like a remarkably stubborn thing to do, which puts it right up my alley!” I was a reluctant addition to Team Survivor in late August of 2009. Nearly a year into treatment, fighting active cancer, newly relocated to the Seattle area, and just sick and tired of being sick and tired! I wanted my active, healthy life back and had absolutely no idea how to get it. That’s when I stumbled onto the Team Survivor website, what a fateful day. After much dialog, Monica Strasen, TSNW’s Program Manager, and I decided that half marathon training would be a good place for me to start. Gotta love those hills! Monica, determined to beat the love of hills into us under the guise of preparation, planned hills into nearly every run. The only flat course I ran during training was the one where I got lost and made my own 6 mile route. The one flat course she had planned, would you believe I went off course and added a few hills? Don’t ask me how you go off course running on Lake Washington Blvd (my apologies again to Cindy and Julie). I approached the hills of the Seattle Half Marathon course with a sense of pending doom, but when we got to them, they really weren’t too bad. I could have done a few more! I am happy to report Monica, you were successful; I enjoy running hills now. Diana was diagnosed with Stage III ductal carcinoma just a month after her marriage fell apart, in August 2008. The diagnosis took her by surprise, and was quickly followed by chemo, the first step in her treatment. While undergoing treatment in Bremerton, her father died of brain cancer in Florida. A bicycle enthusiast from her youth, Diana, now 47, kept riding whenever she could during her treatment. Once, just for fun, she rode her bike to chemo when the Hood Canal Bridge was closed. She took the bus from her home near Port Townsend to the interim passenger ferry, then rode the last 25 miles to treatment on her bike. “I thought it would leave my oncologist speechless for once, and it worked,” she laughed. We held fabulous live and silent auctions with great items and a great auctioneer. Kristina Southard told the story of her amazing journey with cancer and Team Survivor Northwest. The dessert dash, a crowd favorite, was fast and delicious. At the end of the evening, we enjoyed by Dudley Taft Blues Overkill. Together, we raised over $40,000 to support women in their cancer recovery. Thank you to all of our attendees, donors, musicians and volunteers who made the event a success! We’re looking forward to a fabulous 2010 Fall Gala in November. Why Run? Continued from Page 1 Now, here I am, past my first halfmarathon, with the second one looming in the very near future. Just a few months ago I thought I had gotten myself into something that may be nearly impossible. The more I run, the more I want to run. The more hills I struggle to conquer, the more miles I add, the more tired I get, the better I feel. Why do I run?? Well that’s actually really simple, I run to win; not a medal, not a time, not a record, I run simply to win another day, and I am winning!! Thanks in great part to Team Survivor and its mission. The women of this group are the most audacious, determined, intrepid souls full of fortitude that I have ever met! I am honored and humbled to have joined your ranks. Team Survivor NorthwestCertainly not a group anyone aspires to become a member of, but how amazing and inspirational it is once you are! “Long distance runners are privy to a special relationship with pain and solitude and grace.” ~Zola Budd. And so are cancer survivors!! 2 Diana Cronin Rides To Recovery Continued from Page 1 “It was fun. I had a good time doing it, and the look on [Dr. Joe Johnson’s] face was classic, but I think the 25 miles back is more impressive than the 25 there,” she added. Her goal is to get in 15 to 20 miles a day on her bike. Diana also maintained her business as a potter throughout her treatment, making vibrant hand painted dinnerware. “Being active energizes me,” she explained. Through surgery to remove her right breast, radiation, and finally Tamoxifen, she has struggled to stay active. Diana joined the Healthy Active Women class in Port Hadlock as a support to The mission of Team Survivor Northwest is to support women in their cancer recovery through empowering programs of physical activity and health education. her treatment experiences. “I’m not the type to sit there at a support group, and I thought this would be a good support for me,” she said. “The class helped a lot. It’s been a real life saver.” Message from the Executive Director By Rebecca cedergreen, T S N W e x e c u t i v e d i r e c to r Hello and happy New Year! I hope the year is off to a great start for all of you. Ending one year: 2009 2009 proved to be a year of challenges and accomplishments. Services: 2009 was the second consecutive year in which we celebrated record highs in program participants. In 2008 we increased participation by 22%, while in 2009 we hit a record high of 34% over previous years. Financial: This was the third consecutive year in which we struggled with a gap in funding. We still managed to end the year with the lowest gap in funding since 2007. We continue to make strides in the midst of a changing financial landscape. The next 6 months will be critical for maintaining services, while the next 2 years will be instrumental in regaining our financial footing. We may have struggled through a third year of reduced funding, but I am pleased to say that we managed to serve a significantly higher number of participants. That’s a compliment to our members, volunteers, donors, and staff. Congratulations! Beginning a new year: 2010 Services: We are excited about programs this year. We have started two pilot programs in underserved communities and continue to seek ways to reach others. Developing new community partnerships and strengthening existing partnerships is on our mind this year in a significant way. There are over 44,000 women living with and beyond cancer in the Puget Sound alone and TSNW has something to offer them. As we look to reach more survivors, we hope to strengthen and expand our services and resources. I must say that our survivors are fearless, and they ensure we stop at nothing short of the same in our vision and mission. Financial: January 2010 marks a new fiscal year for TSNW and with it, new opportunities to partner your resources with our goal of cancer recovery through fitness. Whether you are interested in donating time, services, items, financial resources, ideas, or networks with TSNW we are opening the door wide to embark on new opportunities with you. In addition we are developing an annual report to be completed March 1. Look for it on our web site www.teamsurvivornw. org It is my sincere hope that your experience with TSNW is rewarding – that your gift comes from the heart, that program participation strengthens you spirit, and that you keep coming back because something about TSNW resonates within you and encourages you. B y E v i e s h e r i n , T S N W M E M B ER & rebecca cedergreen Last Summer I stood with Evie at a local triathlon listening to her share some great “feel good” stories about the women of TSNW. It made me think there must be many stories women have shared that we should tell. Evie’s story: In 1998 I decided that I too could do a triathlon, so I registered for the Danskin. Our team coach, Michelle “the captain”, helped me train for the big day. I was especially nervous about the swim. Non-the-less on race day I jumped right into the water and found that Lisa Talbot was there to swim the whole way with me. It gave me the courage to move forward with confidence. Not just as a triathlete, but as a survivor. As I shared that story with Rebecca I realized I had many stories about the wonderful staff at TSNW over the years. One in particular took place during another Danskin when, amidst my own exhaustion, I witnessed something beautiful. A member who was doing the triathlon for the first time was one the bridge with a broken down bike. As cyclist after cyclist past her one stopped. It was Julia Canas, our Director at the time. I remember seeing Julia jump off her bike and give it to this member saying, “I’ve done the race before, it’s yours to finish now.” Both of these stories demonstrated to me what I believe to be the true spirit of TSNW. We’d like to hear your story, your experience with the heart and spirit of TSNW. Evie has graciously offered to coordinate this effort. We will compile stories, post some of them on our web site, or share them in upcoming newsletters. Please join by sharing your story (s) by emailing it to Evelyn Schwerin at [email protected].
