Finished piece integrates elements of graffiti design and graffiti styles and color in ways that demonstrate a specific visual rhythm and flow. Finished piece is original and shows personality, that is, shows a fresh application of graffiti lettering techniques or invention of new techniques and graffiti design elements and styles. 3 good solid grasp of concept and strategies Finished piece communicates a specific idea, intent, energy, and/or identifiable emotion. Finished piece more or less integrates elements of graffiti design and graffiti styles and color in ways that verge on demonstrating a visual rhythm and flow. Finished piece is somewhat original, that is, it includes some individual personality and fresh approaches in some details, but in general is a more conventional rendering of good graffiti design and styles. 2 starting to get a handle on things Finished piece hints at a specific idea, intent, energy, and/or identifiable emotion, but the work is not clear in this regard. Finished piece attempts to integrate elements of graffiti design and graffiti styles and color but they remain separate and more choppy in execution. Finished piece is not original, that is, it has little to no individual personality. The approach and details might apply equally to the work of his or her peers or to exactly what was taught. 1 still needs work Finished piece does not communicate a specific idea, intent, energy, and/or identifiable emotion. Finished piece does not integrate elements of graffiti design and graffiti styles and color; if present at all they remain separate and distinct in their application. Finished piece stays in the realm of the expected; the letters are not manipulated or enhanced in any particular way. developed by Peyton Scott Russell Copyright © 2014 Forecast Public Art, St. Paul, Minnesota. 1 Lens Technique (lettering, application of graffiti styles and elements, use of color) 4 gets it and applies it with confidence Lettering is characterized by quality lines and strong rhythm, that is, the lines are controlled, steady, sharp, deliberate, and not loose or scratchy-‐looking unless that was an intentional decision. Names are legible (unless illegibility was their intention) and the letters are in proportion to each other and their overall composition achieves a kind of balance. Finished piece incorporates a classic recognizable graffiti style and/or graffiti design elements. And the lettering has personality individual to the artist. 3 good solid grasp of concept and strategies Lettering is characterized by quality lines, that is, the lines are mostly controlled, steady, sharp, deliberate, and not loose or scratchy-‐looking unless that was an intentional decision. Names are mostly legible (unless illegibility was their intention) and the letters are in proportion to each other and their overall composition achieves a kind of balance. Finished piece incorporates one or two graffiti design elements and reflects some personality from the student. Piece may reflect a classic style of graffiti lettering. 2 Lens 4 gets it and applies it with confidence Paper collage, the cutting is clean uses multiple layers and may show examples from techniques the drawing format. The color choices are unified and shows use of concepts in color theory. 3 good solid grasp of concept and strategies apparent. Finished piece uses multiple layers and the cutting is clean but may have areas that are not as clean. Finished pieces in painting (aerosol, brush and/or other) have more than one layer of paint; the embellishments of Finished pieces in painting a letter try to become part of (aerosol, brush and/or the letter, that is, there is other) have a healthy coat almost no separation of paint and more than one between the letter and the layer; the embellishments of embellishments. a letter become part of the letter, that is, there is no separation between the letter and the embellishments. 2 starting to get a handle on things (aerosol, brush and/or other) have only one layer of paint; the embellishments of a letter are not part of the letter yet, that is, there is still some separation between the letter and the embellishments. 1 still needs work Finished pieces in painting (aerosol, brush and/or other) do not appear finished, there is still background; canvas, or blank space showing; the embellishments of a letter are not part of the letter at all, that is, there is clear separation between the letter and the embellishments. What was the student’s level of engagement (and/or motivation) with visual art making before the project began? How would you describe it after this project?
