courses from a diverse curriculum. Our courses can be

delivered at one of our sites or in the work place, in a flexible
and supportive way, to ensure achievement.
We support progression from age 14 right the way through
to degree level. This means you can enrol on an entry level
course and leave with one of a wide range of degrees we
have on offer. Our experts can advise on finding the course
that is right for you, including the new opportunities for
learners in Havering including 14-19 Diplomas and Young
Apprenticeships. At Havering, we offer all our students an
inclusive learning experience which blends high quality

The Department of Business, Care and Service Sectors
has a host of courses to launch your career.
Hair, Beauty and Complementary Therapy
We are one of only five UK colleges with the prized
L’Oreal Flagship Status for Hairdressing. Students
learn practical skills in our professional training
salons which are open to the public.
The College has a modern, well-equipped building
dedicated to the delivery of A Levels and GCSE’s
at the Ardleigh Green campus. Staff are well
qualified, committed and enthusiastic. Results are
excellent and many students go on to study higher
qualifications at Havering College or University.
Business and Administration Courses
Accountancy and Finance
Our state-of-the-art business centre prepares
students for today’s business world. The College has
excellent links with industry and major City financial
and legal firms.
The Centre for Creative Arts
With a suite of the latest Apple Mac computers
and access to the Virtual Learning Environment,
the new Centre provides a hi-tech, modern way to
learn. This state-of-the-art building contains the
latest facilities for students taking Art and Design,
Media, Music and Performing Arts. These include a
recording studio, workshops, darkrooms, exhibition
space, a video-editing suite and a large TV and sound
studio. There are specialist spaces for dance, drama
and musical practice.
Care and Early Years Care
Placements and high quality teaching help students
gain the vocational skills to work with children and in
the wider Health and Social Care sector.
Life Skills Annex
The Annex teaches students with learning difficulties
and / or disabilities practical life skills. This helps them
to live independently, or to prepare for work or further
study. We have newly refurbished the building with the
latest equipment and individual kitchens.
Department of Employment
and Skills Training (EaST)
The Department of Employment and Skills Training,
or EaST, helps people make the most of their
potential. We support students across the College,
but we’re also here for everyone in the community
– from charities and voluntary groups, to individuals
and businesses. We help with literacy, numeracy,
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL),
language support, and basic I.T. We also offer
Teacher Education programmes at various levels
including Foundation Degree and Teaching
Assistant Programmes.
Catering and Hospitality
Budding chefs practise, study and gain qualifications
at the exclusive Jubilee Restaurant, sited at the
Quarles Campus.
Sports
Our sports courses offer possible career and course
progression into personal training, instructing, managing
sports related activities and Higher Education.

Construction and Related Trades
We’re the ideal route to Bricklaying, Carpentry,
Painting & Decorating, Surveying, Architecture and
Plumbing. Build your career with practical study in
outstanding workshop and classroom facilities in
our new Construction Centre, based at our Rainham
Campus, New Road, Rainham
Electrical/Electronic Engineering
Our Electrical Installation courses support
apprentices and experienced electricians who
want to keep up to date. Our Electronic Engineering
courses teach students to use, maintain and upgrade
computers and systems.
I.T. and Computing
As a Microsoft and CISCO authorised trainer we
provide a diverse range of professional programming
and networking specialist qualifications. With our
excellent facilities we offer a range of full and parttime courses from Level 1 to BSc (Hons) Degrees.
Motor Vehicle and Engineering
Get stuck in at our fully equipped workshops. You can
get hands-on with everything from a robotic arm to a
rally car. We provide full and part-time motor vehicle
courses at Levels 1 and 2.

If you’re not sure what course is for you, we’re here to help. You may want to
speak to someone about any of the courses in this guide or find out about
course fees. Maybe you want to speak to a tutor or even be referred to a careers
adviser, to help plan long term. It’s not just about brochures and leaflets. We’ll
give you the advice, and space, to make the right choice. To make sure you get
a place, it makes sense to apply for your course as soon as possible. It doesn’t
have to be hard choosing. Threshold Services has a friendly team of qualified
Course Advisers who can guide you through the many choices on offer. We’ll tell
you about the issues that affect you, like financial support, grants, childcare and

How to enrol
To make sure you get a place, it makes sense to apply
for your course as soon as possible. You can enrol
on a full-time Further Education course or a Higher
Education course right now — so why not get in touch?
For some courses you will need to contact Threshold
Services for an application pack. We will be able to
provide you with more detailed course information,
and once your application form is received, you will
be invited to attend an interview before we can offer
a place. This is to ensure the course is right for you
and you are able to make the commitment that will
be required for the programme.

Course fees are collected by Threshold Services
College Administration Fee
Students normally pay an administration fee of £45 a
year on top of tuition, exam and miscellaneous fees
(when relevant). However, students aged 16-18 are
exempt, as are students undertaking apprenticeships,
basic skills, additionality or commercial courses.
Fee Concessions – Further Education
You will not pay tuition fees on Further Education
courses if you receive any of the following
government benefits or fall into any of the following
categories below:
– 18 and over and taking your first full Level 2 course
– 19 to 25 and taking your first full Level 3 course
– over 25 and with no full Level 2 qualification, taking
your first full Level 3 qualification (please refer to
page 10 for more information on full Level 2 and
full Level 3 courses)
– taking a course that is mostly adult basic education
(not including ESOL)
– over 16 and under 19 on 31 August 2010
– getting income-based benefits*
*proof is required

If you have not been a UK or European Union resident
within the past three years, overseas rates may apply:
Further Education
– Full-time - £4,550 a year
– Part-time - £11 for each hour of the course*
Higher Education
– Full-time - £6,000 a year
– Part-time - £14 for each hour of the course*
*Overseas students must pay the full fee when
they enrol, before the course starts. Ask Threshold
Services if you qualify as ‘home’ or ‘overseas’,
and which fees apply to you. You can also visit

Adult Learning Grant
The Adult Learning Grant (ALG) helps with the cost of
learning, if a student passes a financial assessment.
The grant pays up to £30 per week for learners aged
19 or over, who are studying for a first full Level 2 or
first full Level 3 qualification for 12 or more hours a
week. For further information or an application pack

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)
Students can apply for an EMA if they are 16 to 18, and
have a household income no higher than £30,810.
Students can receive weekly payments of up to £30.
The student must be studying a full time course of
12 or more hours per week. Further information is
available from the website www.direct.gov.uk/ema or
from Student Services.

celebrating A-level results
Discretionary Learner Support Fund
Students over 16 studying on a full or part-time
course that have a household income of £21,000 or
below can apply. The student / parent of the student
would usually be receiving an income-based benefit.
In exceptional circumstances, household incomes
up to £30,000 may be considered.
Students receiving EMA/ALG may be eligible for
Learner Support Funding depending on course
related costs.
Assistance may be given towards course related
costs such as equipment, materials, books, work
experience, essential residential and in some cases,
travel costs. (A contribution towards these costs will
be made subject to funding).
Childcare
If your income is under £21,000 or less you may be
entitled to funding for childcare costs for either a
registered nursery or childminder.
Students under 20 may be eligible to apply for Care
to Learn for help with their childcare costs.
Students aged 20 or over may be eligible to apply for
Free Childcare for training and learning for work.

Appeals procedure
All students have the right to appeal a funding decision
they do not agree with. A formal appeals procedure
ensures the College treats all students fairly. An Appeals
Procedure document is available at Student Services
and the LRC. Students should apply as early as possible
due to funds being limited.

free tuition
FREE TUITION on courses leading to a first full Level 2
or full Level 3 qualification (please refer to the 'Guide to
Qualifications' on the following page). If you currently do not
hold a full Level 2 or full Level 3 or higher qualification and are
enrolling on a course at that level, you may not have to pay
tuition fees. In order to qualify, you will be required to sign a self
declaration on enrolment.
Do I qualify for free tuition on a full Level 2
course?
To qualify for free tuition on a full Level 2 course,
you must not already hold a qualification at this
level. This applies regardless of your age or financial
circumstances, or whether you are in employment
or not.
Examples of full Level 2 qualifications:
– 5 GCSEs Grade A* - C or 5 ‘O’ Level passes or 5 CSE

– 2 AS Levels or more/1 or more ‘A’ Levels

To qualify for free tuition on a full Level 3, you must be
aged 19, but not yet 25, when you start your course,
and must not already hold a qualification at this level.

year for public, staff and students.
Trained staff care for children from 3

is an excellent range of resources at
the nursery, to cover all areas of the
early years and foundation curriculum.

The Ilford crèche cares for children
from two to 5 years, whose parents
attend the Ilford Training Centre.
The crèche has a wide range of
resources that cover the early years
and foundation curriculum. It offers
both morning sessions and afternoon

Step inside Stepping Stones Day Nursery
You will quickly sense the care and professionalism
that is obvious from this friendly staff team. We
place great emphasis on both education and the
care given to the children.
Each day there are planned activities to excite,
entertain and educate each child.
Our parents are busy people as they are staff
or students at the college, or are from the
general public.
We are open for 51 weeks of the year and we like
parents to feel free to ask us anything about their
child, come to our meetings, get help on childcare
techniques or see what is on the menu board!
The meals in the nursery are prepared by a
professional chef and are based on home-cooked
menus, with as much fresh fruit and veg as possible.
In the baby room all the food is 100% organic.
We are very proud of our work with children who
have special needs and have staff who are highly
trained and experienced to ensure that everyone
can join in, develop and thrive with us.

Centres
Ardleigh Green and Quarles campuses each boast
a modern Learning Resource Centre. These give
students the freedom to make the most of their
study time, combining quality library facilities with hitech computers and multimedia equipment, as well
as individual and group study spaces. All students
can use the centres, putting more than 60,000 items
at their fingertips – including books, periodicals,
DVDs and videos. Our open access PCs let students
harness the power of the internet, meaning that
online resources like journals, encyclopedias and
e-books can be accessed both on and off campus.
Because the College participates in a national library
interlending system, students enjoy the widest
resources. Our Qualified Chartered Librarians offer
training sessions on catalogues and databases.

We know that our students work hard – that’s why we do the
maximum to help them have fun.
The Student Services Team is here to help you while
you are studying. We offer a variety of support,
information, advice and guidance including financial
and personal support.
If you want to get stuck into college life you’ll like
the facilities that the Student Services provide. They
run many sports programmes such as basketball,
football and table tennis and the Student Services
Team organise a wide variety of events and
activities throughout the academic year. For the full
programme pick up a copy of the ‘What’s On’ leaflet
from Student Services or check the student intranet.
You can also rely on our Student Development
Workers to come up with unmissable opportunities,
including trips to Thorpe Park or the London
Eye, or to see shows at a West End theatre. They
also arrange our exciting Awareness weeks at all
campuses.
Counselling
There are two counsellors at Havering College, one
based at Ardleigh Green and one at Quarles Campus.
The service is free to staff and students and is private
and confidential. The Counsellors can assist any
student who is experiencing personal difficulties,
so should you need this type of support it is readily
available, You can book an initial session by contacting
the Counsellor direct by phone or email, or contact
Student Services reception at Ardleigh Green.
Sometimes just a chat can help to clear your mind and
see the way forward. In addition students can speak to
a qualified youth worker.
Careers Zone
It might seem like there’s a dizzying variety of choices
ahead of you, but it’s good to know you don’t have
to make them without all the facts. That’s why
Student Services run the Careers Zone, an open
drop-in centre with dedicated, expert Careers

Students’ Union
Havering College has always
championed its Students’ Union
because it’s at the heart of student
life. The Union gives all learners the
chance to try new things and open new
horizons. There are shows and events,
subsidised trips, fund-raisers and parties – there’s
always something going on.
The good news is that your ideas count. Because
the Union is run by students, they want you to get
involved and have your say. You can join in as much
or as little as you want and it’s a great way to make
friends.
The Executive Committee gives support to students,
plan events and activities and represents students’
views to College Management. Union offices can be
found in Student Services at Ardleigh Green, and in
the Common Room at Quarles Campus. Elected
Higher Education Officers ensure that the views of
Higher Education Students studying at the College
are well represented.
Being part of the Students’ Union is a great way to
learn valuable new skills, work as part of a team, meet
new people and get the most out of your student
experience. Elections for SU officers are held in
March each year. Information and nomination packs
are available from Student Services and Students’
Union offices a month prior to the elections – so why
not get involved?

and have your say
StARs have the important role of
finding out the needs and issues of
students in their Tutor/Class Group
and passing these on to the Students’
Union and the College.
This allows the ‘voice’ of the students to be heard
and enables the College and the Students’ Union
to respond to issues quickly, making your time at
Havering College more enjoyable.
Two StARs are elected from every Tutor/Class Group
within the College during the first term of each

DO you have a dream? X Factor finalist Stacey
Solomon did and she chose Havering College of
Further and Higher Education to help her fulfil it.
The singing sensation has credited the college with
giving her the confidence to follow her quest for fame.
The 20-year-old studied for a National Diploma in
Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) at the college’s
impressive £6million Centre for Creative Arts on
the Ardleigh Green Campus complex in
Hornchurch, Essex.
The two year course is equivalent to three A-levels
and can open the gateway to university study.
Stacey was enjoying every minute of her course…until
she was whisked away to stardom after wowing Simon
Cowell and fellow judges at the X Factor auditions.
The talented performer is on the brink of achieving
celebrity status, but after jetting home from the
X Factor national tour, she recently found time
to return to college to officially launch our new
vocational centre in Brentwood.
She said: “I loved being at Havering College. I think
it was one of the best experiences of my life. My
teachers always made me feel more confident.
Being with teachers who really help you and make
you feel you are really good makes all the difference.
“It is a place where you can be yourself because
everyone is so normal and down to earth. I have
made some brilliant friends.
“If someone came to me and said they wanted
to study Performing Arts, I would definitely
recommend Havering College.”
Strawberry Fields Forever
Gets A Standing Ovation
BEATLEMANIA has swept through Havering
College and taken the London Palladium by storm.
Strawberry Fields Forever – a new Beatles musical
written by Havering College advanced practitioner
Peter Dayson – received a standing ovation when it
was performed for one night only in the West End.
The show featuring more than 20 Beatles songs
was written and performed under an educational
licence. It has been highly acclaimed and has
attracted great interest from the industry.
The lead character – Liverpudlian family matriarch
Lily – was played by Emma Tansley. Emma, 20, from
Hornchurch, is a member of Youth Music Theatre UK
and aspires to be an actress. Studying at the college
on a Legal Secretarial course is her back-up plan.
Emma said: “I was really excited to get this part and
worked hard on getting the Liverpudlian accent right.”
Andreas Poulloura, 20, from Rainham, played
Bobby – a wannabe musician whose demo tape
gets sent to Beatles producer Brian Epstein.
Andreas, who is in the first year of his BTEC
National Diploma Performing Arts (Musical
Theatre) course, said: “It is a fantastic musical and
I love the Beatles songs. I have only ever been in a
school show so it was really exciting to go on stage
at the London Palladium.”
Strawberry Fields Forever is the college’s fourth
International CrossOver Project – a unique
educational concept which involves staff and
students from Havering College “crossing over” for
transatlantic productions in a London West End
theatre and in America.
This year Havering College students and staff
performed at the famous Stuart’s Opera House in
Nelsonville, Ohio.
ROSE Shines as a Beacon
THE Havering College ROSE programme has been
highly commended for an Association of Colleges
Beacon Award for helping people with learning
difficulties into employment.
The college has been Highly Commended for the
RNIB and Mencap Award for Students with Learning
Difficulties and/or Disabilities.
The UK-wide Beacon Awards provide national
recognition for excellence and innovation as well as
acknowledging the talents of staff at all levels.
They highlight the breadth and quality of education
in the college sector.
ROSE programme joint manager Sharon Gould
said: “The ROSE programme highlights the positive
partnership between employers and Further
Education for the supported employment of people
with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, and
shows the commitment Havering College has to see
progression, inclusion and empowerment of these
people in the London Borough of Havering.”

Stacey Solomon cuts
ribbon at Hair and
Beauty Campus
X FACTOR finalist and former Havering College
Performing Arts student Stacey Solomon cut the
ribbon at a new state-of-the-art hair and beauty
facility in Brentwood.
Havering College is part of the Brentwood Learning
Partnership and has invested three-quarters of a
million pounds to create The Lanes Hair & Beauty
Brentwood in partnership with Sawyers Hall College
in Sawyers Hall Lane, Brentwood.
The Lanes Hair & Beauty, Brentwood, will cater
for 150 students aged from 14 to 19, as well as
mature students and train them to become future
professionals for the hair and beauty industry.
Stacey joined guests, including industry representatives,
for a celebratory evening at the new centre.
Students have catwalk vision
FASHION students at Havering College stepped
onto the catwalk to present their innovative designs
at East London’s Alternative Fashion Week.
Six students in the second year of their BA Fashion
degree course were among 70 up and coming
designers at the event which acts as a platform for
the discovery of new talent.
The media, public and those in the fashion industry
from all over the world flock to Spitalfields Traders
Market in April when it showcases the most original
and creative collections from a fresh crop of new
designers.
Hundreds of applications to exhibit at the show
are received each year and 2010 marked a debut
appearance by Havering College students.
Student Rebekah Bogle, 21, from Ilford, said:
“Alternative Fashion Week is a really important
event as it is attended by designers and buyers
from all over the world. It was very exciting to be
showing some of our designs there.”
Student Laxmi Rajput, 32, is from India and
commutes from the Heathrow area to study
fashion at Havering College.
She said: “I greatly enjoy my course and the tutors
are very helpful. To be part of Alternative Fashion
Week was a fantastic experience.”
The BA Fashion degree course is one of around 30
degree level courses offered by Havering College.

CAREERS
A NEW Havering College campus to train students
for specialist careers in the construction industry is
meeting a crucial skills gap.
Thames Gateway Minister Shahid Malik officially
opened the £2million Rainham Campus
Construction Centre last November.
The facility will train 7,500 students in construction
skills and engineering trades between now and the
Olympic Games.
With the London Thames Gateway area earmarked
for massive redevelopment in the coming years the
college will be meeting the needs of local employers,
by training the workforce for now and in the future.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships provide the best of both worlds and
are offered as follows:
— Apprenticeships at level 2
— Advanced Apprenticeships at level 3
— Adult Apprenticeships for those aged 24+
The key to a successful Apprenticeship is
an appropriate, supportive and safe working
environment, a strong commitment to achieve,
matched with support from experienced college
staff throughout the programme.
Havering College has established strong links with
employers and can provide some assistance in
finding suitable employees or employment, although
this cannot be guaranteed.
Course
Apprenticeships have three main elements within a
specific industry framework:
— NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) – the work
based element of your programme, where you will
learn new skills in a working environment. You will be
required to complete a portfolio of evidence, which
will be reviewed by an occupationally competent
assessor and your progress will be reviewed on a
regular basis.
— Technical Certificate – a recognised qualification
that provides you with the underpinning knowledge
for the NVQ. This is generally delivered at college on
a day release basis.
— Key Skills – in Communication, Application of
Number and IT are needed to work effectively in
a modern working environment. You will develop
these skills by working as part of a team and
successfully carrying out every-day tasks. This
element of the programme is assessed via a
portfolio of evidence and end test.
If you are not in employment, Programme-Led
Pathways allow you the opportunity to complete
the Technical Certificate element of a framework at
college, as described above, either on a full-time or
part-time basis. This will count towards the relevant
framework should you progress to an Apprenticeship.
Apprenticeships range from Administration to
Engineering, Motor Vehicle Panel Beating and
Spraying to Accounting. If you are interested in an

There are lots of reasons to take a Higher Education course at
Havering. We offer dozens of high quality HE choices, to unlock
your academic and professional potential.
A wide range of people enjoy learning with
us – from mature students to sixth formers,
from mums learning photography right through
to budding graphic designers. Students can
progress at the level that’s right for them. We offer
Access courses, Foundation Degrees, HNDs and
HNCs, Undergraduate Degrees and professional
qualifications. Many choices can be taken part-time.
We don’t charge top-up tuition fees and for 2010/11,
our full-time fees are just £1310.
Loans and grants are available to help support the
cost and our Threshold Services team can give you

Access Courses are a great stepping stone to Higher
Education. If you’d like to do a degree, but don’t have
the entry qualifications, an Access Course is the
perfect way to qualify.

Our New Start programme supports

M25 Junctions 28 and 29.
Buses: 294 from Romford via Gidea Park
Station to The Ardleigh and Dragon; College is
approximately four minutes walk. 256 from
Hornchurch Tube, bus stops outside campus.
Train: National Express East Anglia to Gidea Park
or Emerson Park Halt. Ardleigh Green Campus is
approximately 15 minutes walk from Gidea Park

Students travelling from Quarles to the new construction
centre can use bus 256 which goes to Hornchurch Town
Centre. Change bus to 372 or 165. Alight at Dovers
Corner which is a short walk to the construction centre.
From Romford
Students travelling from Romford can use bus 165 or
103 to Dovers Corner which is a short walk to the
construction centre. Bus 174 goes to Chequers Corner
Dagenham, change for a 287 to Dovers Corner.
From Hornchurch
Students travelling from Hornchurch can use either bus
372 or 165, alight at Dovers Corner which is a short
walk to the construction centre.
From Barking
Students travelling from Barking can take bus 287 which
goes directly from Barking station to the new
construction centre.
Train: The c2c train from London Fenchurch Street to
Southend Central runs past the new construction centre.
The nearest station is Rainham which is a short walk to
the construction centre.
There is easy access from Barking and Thurrock/ Grays
stations to the new Construction Centre.
