Why Do We Do Mission Work? By Kirk Anderson, Director of Student Ministry Monday, April 4th, Ben Hackler, Bryson Hackler and Adam Lancelot spoke to the Deacons requesting that the money donated from the Fifth Sunday donation in May go towards this year‟s Mission trip. They shared where we are going, Copperhill, Tennessee; how many are going, 20-30; what is the money used for, travel expenses, food, and scholarships for those who cannot afford to pay their portion; and what we will be doing, home repair, working with children and whatever else they ask us to do. They also spoke about what their past mission trips have meant to them. Ariana Moll was unable to attend, but she sent a letter expressing her thoughts on her mission trips and with her permission I am reprinting it: As a member of Grace‟s Youth Group, I to help those who are less fortunate have been on four mission trips; than we are. These mission trips only including Juarez, Mexico; New Orleans, last for a week, but the impact they have Louisaiana; Benton Harbor, Michigan; on all of our lives, at least the impact and Navajo Nation, Cedar Springs, they have had on my life will last a Arizona. On each of these trips, I have lifetime. I WAS TALKING WITH CLAUDIA PEEBLER. CLAUDIA, A LITERACY SPECIALIST, HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN OUR TUTORING PROGRAM PARTNERSHIP WITH HYDE ELEMENTARY SINCE THE BEGINNING, 13 YEARS AGO. SHE ASSESSES THE KIDS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM TWICE EACH YEAR—AT THE BEGINNING ND AND AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. SHE WAS TELLING ME ABOUT A 2 GRADE BOY I WILL CALL JOEY. During his assessment in the fall, Joey had been ranked as reading at the beginning 1st grade level. The kids are given a paragraph which begins at a very easy reading level and progresses up through each level of difficulty. Each child is asked to read the paragraph aloud, starting at the beginning, and stopping when they can‟t read any further. This is one way in which an individual‟s „reading level‟ is determined. Last fall, Joey read two or three lines and stopped, saying, “I can‟t read any more.” He hadn‟t reached the first grade reading level yet. Thus, Joey began his tutoring adventure. Thirteen kids walk over from Hyde Elementary, accompanied by a teacher, the principal or another staff member. They‟re met at the door by Anne Woolsey, the Tutoring Team leader, and after a quick bathroom break, they head down to Fellowship Hall for a snack. Each participant has their own tutor for the whole school year, and after snack, they meet together, one-on-one for about an hour. Tutors are just regular people. Many are retirees. Most don‟t come from (CONTINUED ON PAGE 8) email: [email protected] 5002 E. V.8.05 OUR GRACE FAMILY From the Associate Pastor... By Jerry Hilton, DMin, Interim Pastor By Catherine Neelly, Associate Pastor AS WE COME TO THE CLOSE OF OUR TIME WITH YOU HERE AT GRACE, IT IS OUR HOPE AND PRAYER THAT YOU HAVE ENJOYED A BLESSED LENT AND EASTER SEASON. EUGENE PETERSON HAS SAID THAT EASTER REPRESENTS A RESURRECTION TRIANGLE: WHAT IS WORSHIP? WHEN DOES WORSHIP BEGIN? WORSHIPPING GOD IS OUR CHIEF END, AT LEAST ACCORDING TO THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. STILL, THAT DOESN’T ANSWER THE QUESTION, “WHAT IS WORSHIP?” IS IT A SERVICE, A LIFESTYLE, A PLACE? 1) The resurrection of Jesus Christ described in John 20; 2) The resurrection of all God‟s people proclaimed in Revelation 20; and, One of my favorite answers is that worship is what we were created to do. When we worship, really worship, we can feel a connection with God that reflects the rhythms of creation. 3) The resurrection life that is taking place now in you and me which Paul talks about in Colossians 3. That scripture is the focus of our Easter Sunday Morning Worship Celebrations. When does worship begin and end? The reality of all three brings God‟s people together in wonder, worship, and praise. On one hand this is a Kairos question, and on the other hand it‟s a Chronos question. By Kairos question I mean that it‟s in God‟s time, and a life of worship doesn‟t have set start and end times. Worshipping and being in God‟s presence happens at its own pace. By Chronos time I mean chronological set times and perimeters. Our whole lives can and should be worship, but we need specific times and places to gather together to intentionally worship God. CHRIST IS RISEN! HE IS RISEN INDEED! Mary and I cannot thank you enough for all the many kindnesses which have come our way from you. Truly, words fail us as we seek ways to express our gratitude to all the members of this great congregation, the staff, the Session, Deacons, and leadership of the church. God has blessed this place with some of the most dedicated, Christ-centered, and gifted people in the world. To be sure, there are challenges that lie ahead…but that is true of every church, every family, every person. There is nothing that stands in the way of GPC moving to follow Christ in creative, imaginative, and spirit-led discipleship. We are scheduled to take up residence in Wimberley, Texas about the middle of May. We would always love to see you when you are down that way. Just let us know…and as someone likes to say…”we‟ll leave the light on for you.” God bless you, good friends…now and in the years ahead. In Christ, email: [email protected]\ At GPC we gather three times on Sunday morning for worship, 8:15, 9:30, and 11:00. While I see clear points when worship begins, I do not get a sense that the worshipping congregations always agree with me. I think that worship begins when you enter the worship space, either the Great Room or Sanctuary. This means that worship is happening when the prelude or opening song begins. I think that the name “call to worship” in the sanctuary services is a misnomer, as we are already in worship before that time; there is no need to call us. I do not mean that you have to enter the Sanctuary or Great Room and begin praying or studying scripture, but I encourage you to consider what it means to be in worship once you enter that sacred time and place set apart. Do you hear the prelude with new ears? Do you see those around you with new eyes? While all of this talk about worship is nice, you might be wondering about the practical side of things, like what‟s going to happen after Jerry leaves and before we get a new interim. Well, we‟ll keep worshipping, that‟s one thing I know for sure. Other than that, we‟ll see. In the between period I of course can‟t do everything that two ministers do, but I ask you to trust and encourage me. I look forward with a sense of adventure to the coming months. I know that God will continue to move among us. email: [email protected]\ 2 11 V.8.05 OUR GRACE FAMILY Best Years THURSDAY, MAY 5TH This is your chance to learn about two very special people. V.8.05 Prayer Service WEDNESDAY MAY 11TH AT 6:00 PM IN THE SANCTUARY Why a prayer service? Early in April, I (Catherine) attended a prayer service for the Synod of Mid America. The synod is in transition and we prayed for our future leadership, our future plans, and that the Spirit will guide us. As I sat there I thought, “we should be doing this at Grace.” As we prepare for another interim and an installed pastor, we should be praying for this process, the teams working, and the people God is preparing to lead us. Gathering together for prayer and worship is one of the most important things we can do as a congregation. Donna Hetrick and I will lead this short service that includes prayer, scripture, and song. If you cannot be here with us, pray along with us, wherever you are.\ Reach Out The Outreach Team is coordinating with Session, Deacons, and the Communication Team about how best to follow up with visitors, with members who have not been attending recently, and with others who might be looking for a church home. We are called to reach out by being friendly to guests, to members of our congregation we meet during the week whom we haven't seen in worship recently, and to our friends who are not members and may not have a church home. We are not expected to give a sales pitch, just to be friendly.\ Contact Virginia Smith, [email protected], to get involved. Items may be left in the donation box in the hall outside the Great Room. But they‟ve been trained (by Claudia Peebler, among others), given resources with which to do a good job and are committed to children. They have two-and-a-half hours to spare each week and they have room in their hearts to let one more child into their life. Joey‟s tutor is one of these regular people. Claudia was at Grace because the tutoring year is winding down, and it‟s time to see how each participant; did this year. Joey‟s assessment shows he is now reading at a third grade level. Claudia laughed when she told me how Joey declared, “I‟m the best reader in my class!” Whether Joey‟s self-assessment is correct or not, Claudia‟s is. As she notes, Joey now identifies himself as a reader. What a blessing to Joey—a blessing now, and a blessing for the rest of his life. This isn‟t just Joey‟s story. Or Claudia‟s. Or Joey‟s tutor‟s. Or Grace Presbyterian‟s. This is God’s story. Yes, this church is a place that welcomes children, builds relationships with them, and gives them confidence and a sense of accomplishment as they learn to read. We do this because we are a part of God‟s story; the story that calls us to love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action [1 John 3:18]. Together we act in God‟s love and make a difference in this world, one life at a time. That‟s something to celebrate.\ 8 Don’t Miss This Event! It‟s been three years since we took the REVEAL survey as a congregation. As you may recall, REVEAL was designed to help us determine how we‟re doing as a church—are we providing the tools: worship experiences, ministries and educational offerings, needed to experience spiritual growth? Survey results from 2008 have been used to shape the opportunities available today. It‟s time to see how we‟re doing. Have the changes we made been worthwhile? How can we further enhance what we‟re doing to bring forth the kingdom of God here at Grace? Every person‟s input is important. We need 35-40 minutes of your time. Beginning April 30th we will share the link allowing you access to the survey. Check for the link at www.mygpc.org. You can access the survey from any computer with internet connection. Computers are available here, or you can take the survey from the comfort of your home. The results of this follow-up survey will help shape the decisions we make as we move forward to fulfill God‟s call for Grace.
