Have you ever wondered why, a lot of times, you just can’t seem to make progress in Kin despite
the fact that you know so much about what it takes to succeed? There just seems to be a gap between what you know and what you actually know. Let’s call it “The Gap between Knowledge and
Action”. Over the year I have come to see that the reason people don’t change is simply that they do
not dare to be different.
Being different means: Not being afraid to challenge the normal. - Being willing to take a chance.Asking why.- Making your own track, not just following the well trodden path.- Charting your own
course and destiny.- Being the person that you were meant to be.
I believe that everyone is born unique. But through the years we work very hard to be like everyone
else. We conform to society’s so-called “common-sense.” Unfortunately it is just that – “common
sense.” That does not mean its “good sense.”
I had the privilege to be a speaker at FLC. The topic given to me was “How to survive”. Easy, right!
Ya not so much, what works for me may not work for you. Fortunately for me and harsh as it
sounds I do what’s right for me and my “ego” a.k.a. self esteem. There are many words and actions
that I have done and will do that I should probably think twice about doing, but where’s the fun and
learning in that? I firmly believe that the “ask a mentor” path is too easy. I am who I am.
If I were to take just the people reading this, it is likely that most of you have spent a number of
years getting an education so you can get the jobs you have. Doesn’t it strike you as irresponsible
that one can spend so much time getting an education and yet so many people don’t make any deliberate effort to develop their greatest asset – themselves! Most people think once they have a
qualification that’s it. They have arrived. Is it any wonder they don’t grow?
I find it hard to circle the field like a herd of sheep do. I want the fresh grass, the un-trodden path, but
I still want to do the best I can. I will ask that revered mentor, but 9.5 times out 10 I do what I feel is
right. The best way to survive is to be yourself, not what the rest of your club thinks you should be.
You are you and they are them…..
Yours in Kin.

Dr. William Robert Lawless, D.V.M., passed away on Sunday, November 10th, 2013 in his
77th year.
It's with regret, After a long and courageous battle with cancer, we have to share the loss of
LM Bill Lawless, Harriston Kinsmen Club. He fought a long and valiant battle with cancer.
He will be missed by all whose life he touched.
Bill worked for many years in his large animal veterinary practice. After that he worked
with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and upon retirement, continued as a meat inspector. He was very active and involved in many community organizations, including municipal politics, hospital board, school board, Kinsmen, Big Brothers, Masonic Lodge and
his church, all with the goal of creating a better place for everyone. He always enjoyed his
social outings including golf, bridge club, and euchre.

To all clubs in Zone B:
This issue is rather important since it concerns zone business. This is your 1st of several notices
concerning Zone conference which is on March 2 in Mount Forest, Theme and details to come later.
In this issue of “In The Zone” you will find the house rules as well as the district rules concerning
zone conferences…..This is your first and last call to put forth any resolutions that you may have
the deadline is January 2 2014.
This is also the time for your clubs to start thinking about who want to put a written bid in for the
2014-2015 year as DG and host’s for next years zone conference.
I am also looking for a club to host the next presidents round table on January 12, 2014. Early Afternoon preferably.
This is also the time where we (zone team) would like you all to take the time to look and consider
entering zone awards.
The Awards sheets Will be hand delivered to each club. As per last presidents round table the
awards will be updated, but in order for this ALL ZONE BANNERS MUST BE RETURNED ,
so that they can be retired to the original clubs. This will be a process for this year as I am having
some troubles on finding what awards Zone B did do, so bear with me as we hunt them down.
Awards: to be submitted 20 days prior to zone conference.

Cystic Fibrosis
As proud Kin members, we are aware of the partnership between Kin Canada and Cystic Fibrosis. Did you know that
Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults?
Kin-CF Facts
-Approximately $1 in $4 that Cystic Fibrosis Canada has put into CF research and care programs has come from Kin,
Kinsmen and Kinette Clubs.
-When the Kin family first joined the cause in 1964, those with CF were not expected to live long enough to reach
kindergarten; today, almost half of all Canadians with cystic fibrosis are expected to live into their 40s and beyond.
-The discovery of the CF gene in 1989 would not have been possible without the tremendous help of Kin across Canada.
-For almost every year of Kin support, an extra year of life has been gained for a child with cystic fibrosis (Source: Kin
Canada)
Last spring, the Palmerston Kinettes sponsored a very successful Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser/awareness dinner. Is
there a club in our Zone interested in making this an annual event? Please contact me if your club is interested.
[email protected].
Awards & Membership
We would like to introduce you to ZB COOL, the District 1 Zone B interclubbing tool.
ZB Cool would like to visit all the clubs in the zone. The rules are simple.
1.
When ZB arrives at your club, please take a picture of ZB with the traveling clubs members and the president of
the new host club. Email the picture to Lori Schnarr Zone award director at [email protected]
2.
Please add a bottle of BEVERAGE of your choice, to ZB's belly (ZB likes variety).
3.
Make arrangements for members of your club to visit another club within the next month. We ask that ZB not
be in your club longer then a month as ZB is very thirsty and would like lots to drnink. We are hoping that ZB can
visit several clubs in a month.
4.
Lori will keep track of what clubs ZB visits, the club with the most visits at the end, will win ZB COOL and the
contents. We are hoping that ZB will make visits again next year. In the event of a tie, we will draw from a hat.
5.
ZB COOL is not allowed to visit back and forth between 2 clubs. There must be at least 2 clubs in between a
repeat club.
Have fun and Happy travelling

and Fundraisers Apart
When members are sitting at the round table figuring out the game plan for the types of projects,
events and fundraisers to do over the next year(s), it's best to conduct a community needs assessment as a starting point. (Kin members can find how to conduct a community needs assessment in
the Resource Library under Club Resources).
Here, as a team, you can assess what is the most important cause to support or service to perform
to best meet your objective: serving the community’s greatest need. Assessing your community will
let you know how to best serve your community. This is how you define the product of your club.
Here are some tips to help you get from what is important to your club to what projects can you produce to make an impact on your community:
Conduct a Community Needs Assessment - Evaluate to ensure what you're doing is still relevant. If not, no one will come knocking on your door. Keeping on top of the trends in your community is one of the best ways to attracting new bodies!
Google the demographics of your community - Search online to find out what people in your
community do, their family types, age, education, income and gender. This will give you an
overall picture of your target market!
Conduct a SWOT analysis - See what internal strengths and weaknesses you have, and what
external opportunities and threats there are. Once you find the holes you can start to patch it
up.
Check out your competition - Look up what they’ve been doing and consider both their successes and failures.
Now, gather up all your Intel and see if there’s anything missing in your club’s plan. If you see a similar product, event or fundraiser are held by others, doing something similar or the same obviously
won’t allow you to stand out.
You wouldn’t have a lemonade stand if you know there are 10 stands just down the street, unless
you’ve done something different to set yourself apart. Perhaps adding 'sugar free' to your lemonade
menu or being as drastic as the sole lemon distributor and sell to those 10 lemonade stand owners
would do the trick.
Taking this same approach to your club projects through understanding your community and those
that affect it will help you set your club apart, and possibly spark some media attention. (Not to mention buzz from your fellow citizens!)
Make a bigger impact on your community - take some time to look at your club and community

RainBarrel.ca
Kin Canada is a proud partner of RainBarrel.ca. Kin Clubs can easily set up a rain barrel sale, a fundraiser program designed to
give a good return on your fundraising initiative.
WHAT IS A RAIN BARREL?
RainBarrel.ca’s eco-friendly, recycled food grade plastic barrels have been repurposed to collect rainwater from homeowners’
roofs in order to use it on dry days to water gardens, wash cars, clean up outdoor messes and more.
HOW DOES A RAIN BARREL SALE WORK?
Your group begins to promote a rain barrel sale event now to be held about five weeks later. The actual distribution requires a
3 to 4 hour window of time when customers pick up barrels at a volunteer-run event. We provide all training materials to run
an effective sale and we use our experience with over a hundred non-profit groups to help you succeed.
Rainbarrel.ca will design a webpage for your organization linked to our homepage. This is where your customers will be able to
pre-order their rain barrels. Your primary responsibility is to advertise the sale and the website link.
Our experienced professionals can help to tailor a message about your event that will suit your needs. We will also assist you in
promoting your sale with flyer templates, handouts, on social media such as Facebook, and in placing ads on popular websites,
such as Kijiji and Craigslist. RainBarrel.ca’s “how-to” manual guides you through these and other activities to make your event a
success.
People who visit your webpage are introduced to your organization, learn why you are fundraising, obtain information about the
rain barrels and learn about rain barrel pick up instructions. They click on a button to register either a cash order (to be paid for
at your event) or a prepaid order (paid online at time of ordering, using a credit card, debit card or PayPal account).
GET STARTED TODAY!
For more information about cost to your club, potential profit, what happens on the day of your rain barrel sale and how to set
up a rain barrel sale, contact Leah at [email protected] or call 905-545-5577.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance,
chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.
