Developing a clinical
pharmacy philosophy
I.

The first consideration in developing a
plan should be your department goals
and objectives




Is there a mission statement for your
pharmacy?
Are broad goals stated in writing?
Is there long range department plan?
Do these documents, if exits, establish a
“clinical pharmacy philosophy” for the
department?



Developing a clinical
pharmacy philosophy
Any thoughts you have about
establishing a program of clinical
services should be examined in terms
of the purpose, goals, and objectives
of the pharmacy departments
You may see a need to formalize a
statement of philosophy for the
department that speaks to the
pharmacist’s responsibilities in
promoting rational drug therapy

Assessing the need for
clinical services

First step is need assessment
Identifies and defines needs and sets
priorities for addressing those needs

Four components

Recognition
of need
Investigation of need
Analysis of need
Needs selection
Needs assessments

III.
Assessing the need for
clinical services
Recognition
of need
A review of any concern or problems
that have been identified
 Evaluation of drug utilization (DUR),
medication variance reports, quality


Assessing the need for
clinical services
Recognition
 Discussion
of need
with key individuals
within institution ( P & T
committee, nursing ….) would be
helpful

III.
Assessing the need for
clinical services

clinical services
Investigation of need

determine whether any of the needs
can be met through improving or
expanding existing services or if
totally new service programs are
needed
 Ex squeezing in extra 30 min per
