Would ban alcohol and tobacco advertising within 1,200feetof schools, parks
and playgrounds, including billboards, posters, signs and promotional items at
any outdoor location and inside a commercial establishment adjacent to a
window or door that is visible to the public Would exempt taxicabs and
commercial vehicles.
Last Action: 7/1G/98* CHy Counci! passed first reading of amended
ordinance. Second reading scheduled for 7/21 7/7/98-City Counci
amended proposed ordinance. Ordinance was referred back to the staff for
further review. First hearing of amended ordinance scheduled for 7/14.
5/24/9B-City Council held public hearing on proposed ordinance. Further
consideration scheduled for 7/7/98. 6/13/90-5/14/9&-Health and Human
Services Department held community meeting on proposed ordinance. Next
meeting scheduled for 6/7608.
3/25/98- City Council continues to discuss proposed ordinance.
2/24/98- City Council discussed proposed ordinance.
10/28/97 - City Council approved a recommendation, proposed by three City
Council members* directing the City Manager to evaluate how the city can
reduce or eliminate alcohol and tobacco billboards and advertisem&nts. No
date has been set for the City Manager to report back to the Council

Last Action: 5/5/99- City Council voted 4-0 agaisnt proposed ordinance and
suggested a more restrictive ordinance banning all tobacco and alcohol
billboards city-wide. 10/7/97 - City council directed the Planning Oept to draft
an ordinance restricting the placement of tobacco and alcohol billboards. The
Planning Dept is currently working wrtft the billboard companies on a draft..

ALABAMA-No state taw restricts advertising of tobacco products.

Planning Commission approval. Requires an annual permit to post "signs„" Requires outdoor advertising
signs to be at least 12 feet above the sidewalk/thoroughfare and at least 15 feet above the level of a public
driveway, alley or street Prohibits signs larger than 50 square feet, except name of building

ALASKA-No state or local law restricts advertising of tobacco products.
ARKANSAS-No state law restricts advertising of tobacco products.
Little Rock-Bans tobacco advertising on billboards, benches or other forms of outdoor advertising within
1,000 feet of the perimeter of any school or playground. Bans any tobacco advertising in amusement
parks or arcades. Restricts tobacco advertising in store front windows and the exterior of the business
that face a school or playground to not more than 15% of each. (V/i/97, City Board of Directors approved
